Without much thinking I told them about The Copper Onion. If any place has received hype in the last year, it is The Copper Onion. Quickly after my recommendation we headed to there to make sure all the hype was still true. First of all, getting a seat at The Copper Onion can be difficult as of late. After a few phone calls and a little planning we finally got a reservation and had an early dinner at this Salt Lake City hot spot. After our first course of local cheeses and meats, we were off to a good start in confirming all the talk around town. A quick chat with our waiter and the sommelier gave us the confidence we needed to put our meal journey into their very capable hands. We would enjoy a few courses paired with wines of their recommending. The Copper Onion is definitely a restaurant where you can trust the recommendations and guidance of the local staff. They've got a first class service staff and sommelier, Jim Santangelo. All of the waitstaff brilliantly pair their dishes with carefully selected wine. Our second course was the bone marrow, a dish I had heard much about

but don't know if I would have chosen myself. The dish turned out to be a rich surprise paired exceptionally well with a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Our waiter kindly described to us the best way of eating the marrow - slather onto the toasted baguette, top with greens and radishes, sprinkle with sea salt, then drizzle with pan drippings. This elaborate hor dourves satisfied both my daring side and my love of flavor. Per our waiters recommendations we then moved on to a dish of sauteed wild mushrooms covered with a perfectly cooked fried egg. Personally, I am starting to believe that everything tastes better with a fried egg on top, but earthy mushrooms didn't need much help in flavor. The simple combo turned out to be a mouthful of bursting flavor. With this satisfying dish we enjoyed the Casale del Duccio Chianti, which turned out to be my favorite wine of the evening.

The next dish to grace our table was their take on Beef Stroganoff, a housemade pappardelle pasta topped with juicy wagyu beef, that, quite literally, melted in our mouths. This dish, though a little on the heavy side, was possibly our favorite taste of the evening, though I must say we didn't have a bite all night that we didn't fully enjoy. We ended things just right, with a slice of their French Apple Cake topped with a reduced maple sauce, splash of whisky and a maple ice cream - traditional decadence at is best. The hype is all true - flavor at its best is to be found at The Copper Onion. And you will find yourself in good hands, due to their highly trained staff. Your chances of popping in and getting a table are small. Make a reservation but leave any food reservations you might have at home.

Forget about show-stopping finales. In Jersey Boys, the smash-hit musical about the rise and fall of The Four Seasons, the pinnacle of excitement comes about 45 minutes into the first act. That’s when back-to-back presentations of three of the group’s biggest hits—“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Walk Like a Man”—are greeted with enough thunderous applause to start a downpour. “At that moment, the audience has forgotten they’re watching four actors and they root for these four guys as though they really are The Four Seasons in their youth,” says Rick Elice, one of the show’s book writers. “The response is so sincere and enthusiastic and over the top that it’s impossible to believe anything else.” It’s also somewhat surprising. After all, The Four Seasons may have been one of the most successful groups of the 1960s, but history hasn’t institutionalized them the way it has The Beatles or other bands popular with that era’s counterculture. But Elice thinks that’s one reason why fans are so hungry for their music and the incredible story of four Italian-American kids from the wrong side of the New Jersey tracks who could just as easily have ended up in prison as on the pop charts.

“In many ways, the band was a reflection of the people who were buying their records,” Elice notes. “They didn’t have long hair or accents. There was no glamour quotient to them at all, which is why they were never written about. For fans of the band, the show is an edification of who they are because the cultural establishment ignored them, too. These weren’t the people who went down to Washington and marched against the war; these were the guys who shipped out and went to Vietnam. And the respect that the band is getting all these years later somehow feels like respect for them, too.” “In the first act, the songs are presented pretty much chronologically, as they took place within the life of the band,” explains Elice, who prefers to describe Jersey Boys as a “play with music” instead of

employing the much-maligned “jukebox musical” moniker. “In the second act, the music is more cunningly chosen to reflect either directly or by contrast what the band is going through at the point where things start to fall apart,” said Elise. As members leave the group one by one, it’s to a medley of “Stay,” “Let’s Hang On (To What We’ve Got),” “Opus 17 (Don’t You Worry ’Bout Me)” and “Bye, Bye, Baby.” Jersey Boys was born when Elice, for many years the creative director of Broadway advertising agency Serino Coyne, was contacted by a former client who had the option on The Four Seasons catalog. Elice had written a couple of plays and always wanted to work with Brickman, who was a poker buddy. But as they interviewed the three surviving Seasons, they faced a predicament over how to tell the group’s

Entertainment “true” story when they couldn’t even figure out what it was. Elice and Brickman met with Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, the two Seasons who, way back when, formed a business partnership with a handshake that still stands today. “They started to describe what it was like to be blue-collar kids, firstgeneration Americans, Roman Catholic, high school dropouts who were flirting with careers in crime in an environment where people had two pictures on the living room wall: the Pope and Frank Sinatra,” Elice recounts. “It was the archetypal American rags-to-riches story: You you start with nothing, achieve success, and then try to navigate your life through the waters of success.” But when they contacted Tommy DeVito, the initial driving force behind the group until gambling debts put him on the outs with the mob, “He said, ‘Don’t listen to them, I’ll tell you what really happened,’” Elice recalls. That’s when they decided to structure the show the Rashomon way, —by letting each character tell his own account. As Tommy says at the beginning of the show, “You ask four guys, you get four different versions.”

Each Season narrates a portion of the story, including bass player Nick Massi. Brickman and Elice drew their portrait of him from the memories of the other survivors. “There was a great mystery to Nick,” Elice says. “Today you would call him obsessivecompulsive with sort of a sideline in sexual addiction. One day we realized the correlative for Nick would be to think of him as the Ringo of the band. In any group there’s going to be someone who’s off to the side.” That gave them the chance to focus on the Tommy-Frankie-Bob dynamic that first propels The Four Seasons to the top of the charts and eventually breaks them apart. “This was really a love triangle without any sexual component,” Elice observes. “There was Tommy, who discovered Frankie when he was a teenager and held the trio group of Tommy, Nick, and Frankie together when they were a cover band. Then Bob, this new, young talent, came on the scene, and Frankie turned away from Tommy and turned toward Bob because Frankie and Bob were simpatico.” Valli and Gaudio saw in each other what the group needed to succeed: Gaudio, already a songwriting prodigy when he

joined the group, wrote or co-wrote many of the group’s signature songs, which accentuated Valli’s vast vocal range and commanding falsetto. DeVito, meanwhile, piled up a huge debt. But by then the Seasons were more than just a group: They’d become a family, and that put their loyalty to the test. “Tommy gave Frankie and Bob an opportunity to do what families always do,” Elice says. “No matter what kind of betrayals occur, you always stand up for another person in the family because the ties that bind are so strong.” DeVito may also have been dealing with his own family issues. As The Four Seasons climbed the charts, his brother, who once had been part of the band, was behind bars. And for Elice, that’s the essence of the show—family. “That was a very powerful hook,” he says. “We all know what it’s like to want acceptance, to want respect, and to try to find a sense of home with people who are not just the family we’re born into but the family that we choose. Travis Wall What kind of dance does your company focus on? We are a contemporary dance company. We use a lot of contemporary music, but our show is very eclectic. There’s musical theatre, electronic and contemporary music––you name it! There’s a whole range of music and, depending on the music, we move differently and that’s why we are called Shaping Sound. We are a very music-driven company. Our musicality and choreography is what we’re best at. We create different movements and images based off of the music.

Why are you coming to Salt Lake out of all the cities you could go to? Utah’s always one of the best places, and our favorite place to go because the dancers are truly world-class. Dancers that go to nationals and compete against the entire United States are usually from Utah if they win! The studios, training, technique and work-ethic that all of the kids have in Utah is just amazing.

What’s been your best dance event in Utah? We just had NUVO in Utah (Ogden, April 19-20) and it was the best competition I’ve ever seen on a regional stage. It actually looked like a national competition. It looked like what we’re going to see this year at the dance awards in New York City this July! It was the biggest turnout we’ve ever had and, honestly, the competition was like number, after number, after number of amazement. I was like, ‘How are we going to pick who wins?’ It was really hard. Our highest award is called DJ’s Pick, which means you score 97 or higher from each judge. We, honestly, give out maybe two, three or four in each city we go to, and at NUVO in Ogden, I kid you not, we literally gave out 30 or 40. That’s how many

What genres of dance are Utahns the best at? There is amazing ballet technique, but also a lot of Utah studios develop really good ballroom and hip hop dancers. The thing is in Utah, the studios train the kids in techniques of all genres of dance. I feel like a lot of times, across the United States, dancers don’t train in a lot of different styles–but these kids (from Utah) can do everything.

Why do you think the dancers in Utah are world-class? I don’t think the kids get too distracted away from dance, and the studios are great! I also think there’s a discipline trait there. They’re hungry––they want to be there (in the studios)! They aren’t being forced to be there, and I think that makes a big difference.

What's your favorite gift for Mother's Day (besides hugs, kisses and heart-felt cards)? I really like flowers because they are like relationships. One has to take the time to stop and enjoy them or you really miss out on the beauty, uniqueness, and the "special something" they have to offer. One of my sayings as mother is, "Slow down — take time to stop and smell the flowers.” Life, for me, is most enjoyed when each step is appreciated.

Best Mother's Day memory? A simple memory — A picnic up in Fernwood Park in Layton, UT. On Mother's Day my family will plan the meal, shop for it, prepare the food and then we either go on a picnic or have a BBQ. Oh, and they clean up too! (A dream day, right?). Like my mother, it's just nice to have the family gathered. We live in a world of abundance and it seems the world puts so much emphasis on gifts, when really the way to go is to spend time together, sharing and caring.

Best gift you’ve given for Mother's Day? Mom lived frugally and we always bought her something that she wouldn't purchase for herself. But--those gifts are not what I remember. What mom loved most was to have a Mother's Day dinner at her home with all of us seven siblings and our families attending. After dinner, the siblings would gather around the piano and sing songs. She treasured the gift of music in our home. She provided the lessons and our gift to her was to give back to others using our talents.

What do you miss most about your mom? Her laughter, her ability to make all people, now matter their status, feel important and loved. I miss being able to call her up on the phone for a visit and just to say "Hi, mom." The fact that she isn't here for the graduations and weddings of her grandchildren, and the birth of any of her great-grandchildren leaves a large whole in our hearts. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and I wish my in-laws and children's children could have spent time with her on this beautiful earth.

Pride week: After dark Salt Lake City is known for its large and widely attended Pride Festival. During the day you can participate in the Pride Parade, the Pride Festival, and other activities. However, after dark is when the party really gets started. Check out these great nightlife activities during Pride weekend!
