Debbie Worthen What is your favorite restaurant in SLC? I love the sandwiches at Toaster’s. They’re toasted with delicious Balsamic Vinegar. It isn’t just a sub shop and everything on their menu is really good. For dinner, I love to go to The Dodo because of their desserts. My all-time favorite is their fresh crushed strawberry cheesecake. Where is your favorite place to shop for the holidays? I will go far and wide for “the perfect gift”! The quest usually takes me all over the valley and I start EARLY! I’ve already found some unique gifts at the Downtown Farmer’s Market. I also love shopping at Down East Outfitters because they have fun, trendy, and affordable clothes. Bohme Boutique is also one of my favorite places to shop. I would like to buy one of everything that they have. If you had 48 hours to do anything in Utah, what would you do? I would enjoy skiing at Brighton on the weekend and staying in a cozy lodge with my family. What is your favorite thing to do around downtown? Go to dinner at Market Street Grill and then watch a Jazz game at Energy Solutions Arena. What is the best part of living in the 801? It’s home! I grew up in the Salt Lake area and the people here are really nice.
As the KUTV morning meteorologist, Debbie spends most of her time in front of the weather wall. She is also the co-host of KUTV's lifestyle show, Fresh Living. She spent her first eight years in broadcasting as a reporter and anchor before making the full-time change to the weather department in 2006. Since starting her career, Debbie has also worked in Pocatello, Idaho and Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada. She lives in the south end of the valley with her husband, two daughters, and one crazy puppy.

What is the best part of being a meteorologist and working in broadcasting? The best part is, without a doubt, the people we get to meet. Making sense of Utah’s crazy weather is fun too; it is really true what our teachers told us growing up, we WILL use math and science someday! What is the most challenging part of your job? Without hesitation I can say it is getting up at 1:45 weekday mornings, it’s torture! Catch Debbie Worthen weekdays on KUTV Channel 2 from 4:30 – 8 am. You can also watch her on Fresh Living with Casey Scott, weekdays 1 – 1:30 pm.

Layla Mediterranean Grill & Mezze Perseverance and hard work pulse through the veins of the Tadros family, owners of Layla Mediterranean Grill. This part Egyptian, part Lebanese family has been in the restaurant business in Salt Lake City for over 30 years, and not until August of 2010 did they get to open their dream restaurant. Before that, they said Salt Lake City just wasn’t ready for their style of Mediterranean restaurant. In the beginning, the Tadros family ran a classic American restaurant in the heart of downtown Salt Lake. Some of you may remember The Printer’s Loft from the early ’80s. It opened right after Raouf (the father of the family) finished graduate school. Since then, the family has operated several restaurants, including their last venture, Confetti’s—an Italian restaurant that they
10
ran for over 16 years. Though the Tadros family and the neighborhood enjoyed Confetti’s, there was still something missing—Raouf and Layla dreamed of sharing authentic Middle Eastern cuisine with the Salt Lake community. In August 2010, their dream came true when they opened Layla Mediterranean Grill & Mezze (named after the Raouf’s wife, Layla). Layla serves traditional Middle Eastern cuisine, the kind Raouf and Layla make for their family and friends at home. Frequent patrons of restaurants past will see the same Tadros faces serving tables and working in the kitchen. It seems like the whole family is involved in some way. One of their daughters serves and manages at the restaurant, while the other daughter helps with the accounting, their son cooks, and Mom and Dad still reside in

The small plates piqued our interest and our tastebuds,

For dessert, we couldn’t pass up the chance for homemade baklava. At Layla they have three types of baklava: cashew, pine-nut, and pistachio. We chose the pistachio, which turned out to be an excellent choice. They are small bites that are not too sweet—perfect

Many of the recipes at Layla Mediterranean Grill & Mezze have been passed down from generation to generation, some having Lebanese roots and some coming from Egypt. Their menu spans from $5 red lentil soup to $8.50 shawarma or $15 dinner-sized moussaka. Their prices are budget friendly, and their flavors are rich and hearty. The passions of the Tadros family shine brightly in their food and in every detail of their restaurant. Becky Rosenthal loves Salt Lake City. It doesn’t get much more complicated than that. Sometimes she attributes it to the four distinct seasons. Other times it’s the skiing or the summer evenings on the porch. However, most often, it’s the food. Becky Rosenthal started SLCfoodie a few years ago in hopes of sharing her love of the emerging Salt Lake City food scene. She currently lives downtown where she also manages Vintage Mixer.

El Asadero (Mexican) If there is one thing that is hard to find in Utah, it’s 100% authentic Mexican food that is affordable. Just two years ago, Margarito and Imelda Parra brought a much-needed authentic restaurant to Salt Lake City. El Asadero tricks your taste buds into thinking you have crossed the border for a mouthwatering experience. With plates starting at only $7.50 ($8.00 for a dinner plate that comes with a drink), you can count on everything from their most popular authentic mole to the unforgettable huaraches to be “absolutamente perfecto.” 1011 West North Temple, SLC
Tandoor Indian Grill (Indian) For those who are excited for new tastes, Tandoor Indian Grill is an excellent choice. Tandoor serves both buffet- and menu-style food that can be summed up in one word: sensational! They feature tasty pakoras, chicken tandoori, and an array of traditional Indian cuisine that can all be found within the buffet starting around just $10. Anyone who tries their first bite from Tandoor Indian Grill will wonder why they had not eaten there sooner. 729 East 3300 South, SLC

Dining Yanni’s Greek Express (Greek) When a restaurant has been around for more than 30 years, they must be doing something right. Yanni’s Greek Express has a covetable reputation—and for good reason. Unlike many traditional fast food joints, Yanni’s serves succulent chicken or pork souvlaki that is not only healthy but bursting with creative spices. Also served is the traditional lemon rice, gyros, and much more. If you have room left over, the melt-in-your-mouth baklava is guaranteed to satisfy your sweet tooth. Once you try Yanni’s, it’s sure to become a personal favorite. 2761 Highland Drive, SLC
Asian Potato (Thai/Chinese) Sometimes it’s too hard to choose between two restaurants, but why should anyone have to? Asian Potato takes on a new perspective by blending Thai and Chinese cuisine under one roof with the result of an irresistible variety of choices! Some of their most popular dishes are orange chicken, pineapple chicken, as well as many different variations of Thai curry and lo mein dishes. If you love Chinese or Thai food, Asian Potato has something to offer for everyone. And because nearly every dish is priced for less than $10, you will leave with a big smile on your face and enough money in your pocket to check out that movie you’ve been wanting to see. 8745 South 700 East, Sandy

Ring in 2013 with better eyesight and a fresh look. Q: Is eyelid surgery covered by insurance? A: When your drooping eyelids begin blocking your vision in any way, insurance will often cover the cost of eyelid surgery. We can determine this with eyelid measurements and a quick test of your peripheral vision. Many other eyelid problems due to age, scarring or other causes are also covered by insurance.

Q: What is the healing time for eyelid surgery? A: Most people have bruising and swelling that lasts 1-3 weeks. This can be lessened with ice, avoiding blood thinning medicines, and sleeping with the head elevated. By 6 weeks you would be ready for a professional photo.

Entertainment During such a busy time of year, many of us forget what makes the holidays so thrilling. While for many, the shopping, gift making and exchanging, baking, and snow blankets covering the streets make it special. Others look forward to their family traditions that began here in the Valley. Salt Lake City provides a plethora of events over the next couple of months to help us remember that the holidays can be peaceful and exciting, and not just busy and stressful. Whether you love music or dancing, conventions or celebrations, there is something to inspire the Christmas spirit in everyone. Each unique event will certainly uphold your holiday traditions and may even create a new one. A Christmas Carol 12/8–22 Few things will get you in the Christmas spirit as quickly as witnessing the story of the man who needed it most: Ebenezer Scrooge. For 28 years, Hale Center Theatre in West Valley has been performing this timeless tale for young and old to enjoy. This nationally acclaimed musical adaptation by Wilkins and Bradford tells the story of a bitter man’s transformation after supernatural visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past,
Present, and Yet to Come. With inspiring visual effects, exquisite portrayals of each character, and an ending that will undoubtedly warm your heart, A Christmas Carol is a holiday tradition that will not disappoint. $18–$30. Entertainment The Forgotten Carols 12/14–22 It is always exciting to welcome in the holidays with uplifting music. While many will revert to the music they know, let this Christmas be your first to welcome The Forgotten Carols. If you have seen it, you know why people return year after year to feel what some describe as “the Christmas spirit in its most beautiful form.” The story is centered on a nurse who is too uptight to be bothered by Christmas. She is assigned to take care of an elderly man that is stricken by psychiatric tendencies, and he takes her through the forgotten characters of the Christmas story, which ultimately changes her perception on the holiday. Michael Mclean, an accomplished performer, composer, songwriter, producer, and director, had a vision to provide uplifting and inspirational music during this special time of year. At the conclusion of his masterpiece, you will see that he did, indeed, accomplish this. The Forgotten Carols is positively inspiring and will surely become part of your holiday music. $13–$29. Cottonwood High School, 5715 S. 1300 East, Murray; www.forgottencarols.com
EVE 12/29–31 As Christmas winds down and people begin to contemplate whether or not they should take down their tree and decorations, Salt Lake City’s very own EVE celebration is just getting started. EVE is a three-day festival that is presented by SLC Downtown Alliance and features outstanding entertainment for all ages. There are performances
of fine art and local music, ski and snowboard competitions, DJs, dance parties, art installations, kids’ activities, food, film screenings, laser shows, and, of course, fireworks at midnight to help light up the night and inspire your New Year’s resolution. $15 for three-day pass; kids under 10 get in free with paid adult admission. 100 S. West Temple, SLC; www.eveslc.com
NOV 23rd - DEC 28th, 2012 Another new Christmas comedy here at the Off Broadway spoofs the Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye musical White Christmas, but ours is just a little “Off”. This comedy is sure to have laughs as the main characters dress as women to get out of some sticky predicaments, and also sing and tap dance their way to fame and fortune. There may even be a Christmas Miracle or two. Be sure not to miss out on this fun filled comedy. It’s sure to be an OBT classic.

Ice Skating at Gallivan Center Looking for some winter fun all month long? It looks like its time to pull out your winter coats, gloves and hats because winter is here. Gallivan’s newly renovated ice rink will be open all winter long. For those who didn’t skate last year at the new ice rink, it is quite a bit flashier due to a new light system that changes the ice different colors while skating. Plus, it is twice the size of the previous rink. So grab some friends! 239 S. Main Street, SLC

Salt Lake City’s Live Music Scene
Salt Lake City’s music scene has really begun to heat up—despite the cold weather—and the rest of the country is beginning to take notice. Here’s a guide to your front-row seat to some of the greatest live entertainment experiences the city has to offer. Don’t Chase Away the Blues These venues will put soul food on your plate and tasty grooves in your ears. The State Room (638 S. State Street) Fast becoming a favorite for a step up in live music, the State Room is a 21+ venue that features local artists and national acts with a focus on blues, jazz, indie/roots rock, and reggae. Sure, you can get a drink and have a great time, but, Adam Rasmussen explains, “We’re not just a bar—we have live music at the heart of everything we do.” Coming up this month: 12/7: David Hidalgo & Alejandro Escovedo 12/14: Brandi Carlile Pat’s BBQ (155 W. Commonwealth Ave) Nothing goes with succulent ribs or some tangy pulled pork like some spicy jazz and blues. Pat’s has a backyard

cookout-like atmosphere. Slide down the picnic bench, get comfortable and enjoy a front-row seat to live music Thursday through Saturday. The Bayou (645 S. State Street) First and foremost, the Bayou is about beer. Hundreds of options grace its extensive list of brews—some only available in Utah. A close second would be a mouthwatering menu of Cajun dishes from crawfish etouffee to blackened catfish po’ boys. The kitchen is open late, too, in case you’ve got a craving long after the sun goes down. But three nights a week, the Bayou breaks out its triple threat: live blues and jazz that goes down perfect with its fare. Coming up this month: 12/8: Mr. Lucky Blues 12/15: Tim Kidder Trio 12/28: Chalula

Urban Lounge (241 S. 500 East) Boasting daily live concerts from some of the best bands you have (or haven’t) heard of, Urban Lounge is the spot Salt Lake City locals swear by. It’s a perennial winner of people’s choice awards and has expanded beyond local musicians to attracting big national acts as well. Coming up this month: 12/5: The Sword 12/13: Lady Murasaki 12/15: GAZA, Code Orange, & Kids Full of Hell 12/31: New Year’s Eve Party with People Under the Stairs Liquid Joe’s (1249 E. 3300 South) Want to see up-and-coming local artists strut their stuff? Many Utah bands that are now household names played at Liquid Joe’s before they made it big. If you want a more tried and true approach to a good time, regulars the Spasmatics rock the place every Saturday night. The Complex (536 W. 100 South) Home to four separate concert venues, The Complex can host up to four events on the same night, at the same time. The venues: Vertigo and Vibe are home to two of the hottest 21+ club nights in Salt Lake. The Grand and the Rockwell are hosts to larger scale events, parties, and touring bands. Coming up this month: 12/6: Dance Gavin Dance 12/7: Winter Wonderland 12/8: NOFX 12/15: Anberlin & Blondfire Kilby Court (750 Kilby Court) Kilby Court has the distinction of being one of the few all-ages venues in the city
Nightlife
Coming up this month: 12/1: Bad Weather California, The Blank Tapes 12/6: The Dangerous Summer, Young London Piper Down Pub (1492 S. State Street) An Olde World pub for the ages, Piper Down’s friendly folks welcome you on weekends for live music to go with that pint. With true Irish hospitality, they invite you to “sit back, relax and allow our music to move you.” Celtic rockers Swagger often grace the stage with their unique brand of tunes to match the décor. Raising the Bar These joints offer a straightforward experience. Belly up and get ready for an earful. Garage On Beck (1199 Beck Street) Classic atmosphere and a top-notch patio complete with fire pit make the Garage a great place to spend an evening with friends. The menu is
no slouch either. Try the fried funeral potatoes, a tasty twist on a Utah standby, and don’t miss $1 taco Tuesdays. They put as much effort putting a stage lineup together as they do creating a perfect hangout. Traveling acts and local talent alike provide excellent entertainment. Burt’s Tiki Lounge (726 S. State Street) No frills might be a generous description. A traditional dive bar that hearkens back to the punk rock clubs of the’80s, it is tiki in name only—no pineapple juice here. Instead, grab some of the hard stuff in a glass and on the stage. Burt’s hosts only the grittiest in punk, metal, and roots rock/Americana. Coming up this month: 12/12: Lo-Pan, Huldra 12/21: Wayne “The Train” Hancock Join the Chorus When pianos duel, everybody wins. The Tavernacle Social Club (201 E. Broadway) Encouraging Salt Lake City to sing along for nearly 10 years, the Tavernacle’s karaoke and dueling piano shows are almost legendary. Request a song and
belt out your best vocals, but watch out—$1 trumps whatever is being played. Bring cash, friends, and a funloving attitude! Coming up this month: Sundays–Tuesdays: Karaoke Wednesdays–Saturdays: Dueling pianos Keys On Main (242 S. Main Street) With a crew of four professional piano players, a great pub fare menu, and a selection of signature drinks, Keys On Main has gotten too big for its britches and is expanding into the Seattle area as well. Those in Salt Lake already know they’re in for some impressive talent and a rollicking good time. They’re ready when you are—there’s live entertainment every night of the week.
