Veyo Pool A well-known secret among locals, Veyo Pool, is hidden away in a small town just a few miles north of St. George. A beautiful natural spring fed swimming pool, the pool is located within a small basalt canyon. The building of this pool back in the 1920s gives it quite a history. Recent renovations and improvements make it an enjoyable place to spend your day, especially on the hot summer days that southern Utah offer. There’s also Crawdad Canyon— known for its rock climbing and perfect for the kids who will love spending the day catching crawdads out of the creek that runs through the canyon.

Zion National Park Zion National Park has many wonders around every turn of the road. You don’t have to walk the trails or hike the climbs to see the beauty of Nature that is Zion. Driving the road from the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway down to the Visitors Center you can look for turnouts to stop and gaze at the amazing formations of cliffs, mesas, and mountains. However, you can’t help but want to get out and hike the many trails the canyon offers. Take time to visit the old lodge for a quick meal. Route 9, Springdale www.nps.gov/zion

What’s the best family day out for you and your family?

Utah has so many great options for a day out with the family. My family loves Lagoon, Hogle Zoo, and the Natural History Museum. If you want to do it on the cheap, Utah’s mountains are one big playground. We love hikes up Waterfall Canyon near Ogden, a drive up to Park City, or maybe a hop, skip, and plunge into one of Utah’s many lakes. I guess the best part of family day out would be the fact that you get a day with the family.

Where are you most excited to take your friends when they come to visit?

Utah is one of those states where people who don’t live here ask, “What’s so great about Utah?” The amazing red rocks of Moab and St. George, to start. Or how about the clean, cool air of Park City or a quiet night with a million stars on the top of a houseboat in Lake Powell?

What’s the best guys’ night out venue?

I’d have to say a Jazz game, a Real Salt Lake soccer game, or a road trip to Wendover. Honestly, I would prefer a crowded poker table in the basement of a friend’s house.

What are the best date night places?

With three kids, we take our date nights pretty seriously because they are far and few between. One of our favorite dates was dinner at Market Street Grill and then a play at Capitol Theater—Wicked was wicked!

Where is your favorite place to summer road trip in Utah?

Casey Scott’s an awesome dude. KUTV Channel 2 personality Casey Scott is a Utah favorite. Get the INside scoop on his favorite things to do, see and eat in the Beehive State. What are you most excited to do in Salt Lake this summer?

Golf, golf, and more golf. And when I’m done with that, even more golf.

What do you love most about Utah?

The 3 ½ seasons. I say 3 ½ because we always get a little short changed on spring. I also love the diversity of the landscape, from the lakes to the mountains and red rock.

Hands down, Lake Powell. It is a magical place. Growing up, Lake Powell was one trip we always looked forward to. It doesn’t get better than waterskiing on glass in the early morning and hourly dips to cool off in the afternoon, not to mention the sky full of stars every night.

Where is your favorite place to cool off in the summer?

Cherry Hill in Kaysville. My kids love it, and I really enjoy doing laps around the lazy river all summer long.

What event are you most excited for this summer?

I’m a joker…and ex smoker and a midnight toker… Steve Miller Band at Red Butte Garden. If you have never been you really need to go—there is no prettier place to see a concert.

What is your most embarrassing moment on the air? You know, my job for the most part consists of me doing embarrassing things on the air all the time, but every once in a while, my shirt will creep up a little more than I would like it to, and Ron Bird will make the comment, “Crack is whack.”

he fact that our summer is a “dry heat” can be a small comfort when you’re staring down triple digits on the thermometer. Fortunately, Utah is replete with rivers, lakes and reservoirs offering dozens of ways to keep cool while having a blast. Whether it’s a leisurely day at a favorite fishing hole, or a heart-pumping first time run on a wakeboard, Mother Nature offers some wet fun for just about every temperament in Utah. It may seem strange to be touting the virtues of water-related recreation in a desert, but Utah’s unique geology brings us some world-class opportunities. Take our rivers, for example. The northern mountains and southern red rock through rivers like the Green and Colorado have carved their pathways have made them prime destinations for rafting. With everything from gentle floats through the beautiful scenery on the San Juan, to class-V heart attack-inducing whitewater in Cataract Canyon, there’s a tailor-made adventure waiting for any and all. Choose a half-day of fun, a week-long camping adventure with meals cooked by friendly and experienced guides, or anything in between. If a raft isn’t your preferred mode of river interaction, perhaps the slow-mo of fishing is more your speed. Utah’s mountain rivers and streams offer fantastic fly-fishing in some of the world’s most majestic settings. It’s hard to beat the sensation of wading into a gentle stream in the Uintas for a day of clean air and that special brand of clear headedness that only fishing can provide. Of course, fishing is not just for those seeking a Zen experience. Sections of rivers like the Provo offer some areas sure to get your pulse pumping versus fish battle royal. Look to find some of the tastiest brown or rainbow trout you’ve ever eaten. If fly-casting isn’t your bag, try trolling the waters of Strawberry Reservoir or Fish Lake for some fantastic boat fishing or simply seating along the shoreline. But maybe you’re looking for something with a little more horsepower, something a little more high-speed. Well, you’re in luck on that front as well. Grab the nearest speedboat and get thee to a reservoir. Most notable among Utah’s water playgrounds is definitely

Entertainment

Lake Powell. Visited by over two million fun-seekers each year, Powell boasts nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline, with gorgeous natural features like the Rainbow Bridge National Monument and Glen Canyon’s red rock cliffs pretty much everywhere you look. Let’s be honest, though: you don’t go to Powell for the sights. Those are just perks. The real reason you go to America’s second largest man made reservoir (behind Lake Mead) is to play. Whether you’re zipping around on a personal watercraft like a Jet Ski or WaveRunner, or strapping yourself into a ski or wakeboard behind a boat, you’ll be in good company on Lake Powell. For best results, a week spent chilling on a houseboat with frequent jaunts out on the speedboat (so that you can perfect that slalom ski rooster tail) is sure to charge your batteries enough to get you through another year in the cubicle. In the Northern part of the State, you’ll find similar joys at Flaming Gorge on the Utah/Wyoming border. Day-

trippers and weekenders may find Deer Creek, Pine View, Jordanelle or Bear Lake just their speed. Keep in mind, places like Jordanelle limit the number of boats and watercraft so that congestion doesn’t ruin everybody’s fun, so get there early (their campgrounds fill up quickly, too). Another word of caution: high elevations and glacial runoff can make for some frigid water in the spring months, so if you insist on getting your ski on, you may want to pack a good wet suit. Now, in an article about fun in Utah’s water, it would be a shame not to mention our most unique offering: the world famous Great Salt Lake. Often overlooked by water enthusiasts, Utah’s largest body of water is actually fantastic for sailing. Long shunned by motorboaters, a high-volume flushing station at the GSL marina to get all that salt off makes it a much more plausible outing option. There are even those who will venture out for skiing. While swimming in the GSL has fallen out of favor in recent decades (hence Saltair’s conversion from resort to concert venue), the braver among us can have the truly strange experience of wading way out from the shore into the shallow water, and learning what it feels like not to be able to sink. Considering the rarity of a salt lake in general, this may just be the defining Utah water experience.

Fresh fruits and vegetables. Delicious cheeses and WA SA TCH FRONT jams. One-of-a-kind arts and crafts. Utah’s farmers markets are brimming with amazing produce and locally made goods, so be sure to check some out this summer! Upon the success of the Wheeler Farm Market, the Wasatch Front Farmers Market™ added a second market location last year at the Historic Gardner Village in West Jordan. The Gardner Village Market takes place every Saturday from June-October. The market boasts live music, 20+ locally owned retail stores, the famous farmers’ market pancake breakfast, and 80+ farmers, food vendors, and artisans. The Gardner Village Market is surrounded by history and tradition, and is sure to offer you a full day of entertainment and fun. Gardner Village Market, Saturdays, June 1st-October 26th, 9am-2pm, 1100 W. 7800 S., West Jordan.

Bustling with shoppers browsing booths filled with locally grown fruit and vegetables, local honey, grass-fed beef, cheese, jams, and handmade arts and crafts, the Wasatch Front Farmers’ Markets™ are serving as convenient, gathering places for people to eat locally and sustainably. The Wasatch Front Farmers Markets™ are helping instill what our great-grandparents already knew – food fresh from the farm tastes better! Three years ago, organizers, Marty and Maryann Alston, chose their first farmers’ market location at Wheeler Historic Farm. They saw the venue as the perfect place to bring people back to where food comes from – a local farm. Each week the market draws 100+ farmers, food vendors, and artisans, who offer Utah-grown produce, pasture raised eggs, and a delicious array of market prepared foods, like a farm-fresh pancake breakfast and wood-fired pizza. Wheeler Farm Market, Sundays, June 2nd-October 27th, 9am-2pm, 6351 S. 900 E., Murray.

“We want to make local food accessible, affordable and profitable for our vendors,” Maryann Alston maintains, “so, we’ve added even more locations for 2013.” The new markets they are adding this year are Fridays at Thanksgiving Pointe in Lehi, Fridays at various parks in Millcreek Township, and their Office Fresh program which takes the market to large-sized businesses. Along with these new markets, the Wasatch Front Farmers Market™ has also opened a permanent Farmers Market retail store at 5823 S. State Street in Murray. The Wasatch Front Farmers Market Store is open Thursday-Sunday from 10:00am-5:30pm. “I come for the ambience,” said Amanda Smith of Salt Lake City. “The things here are fresher and people are nicer.” Farmers markets are nostalgic; they remind people of simpler times, offering a temporary escape from box stores and fast-food. “We come because it’s a fun outing and we love the Brigham City peaches,” market patron, Colby Johnson stated. Farmers markets are a fixture of the past and the present working together to create a community-driven, local economy.

At last, Salt Lake City has become a place with great dining options. No longer is Utah known only for its variety of outdoor adventure, it is finally a place with an exciting, interesting assortment of eateries. But can the same thing be said for a chain steak house? Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical that I wouldn’t experience anything new or different at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Now, I wasn’t expecting anything particularly unpleasant. Hey, I love a good steak but I generally know what to expect at these kinds of places. But tonight was different. The atmosphere is “steakhouse” familiar with dark wood, comfortable burgundy booths and elegant table settings. You’ll also pass several impressive wine coolers and collections on the way to your seat. As we sat down, I was expecting to be handed an exhaustive, way-to-heavy wine menu. Having won the Award of Excellence in Wine Spectator, choosing a wine at a place like this can be overwhelming. Instead, I was handed an interactive wine menu programmed onto

18

IN Magazine | JUNE 2013

an iPad. Finally, for those of you who get nervous speaking intelligently to the wine steward or even pronouncing ‘sommelier’ correctly, you now have the iPad to break down that intimidating barrier. Fleming’s has made choosing your wine simpler and definitely more fun. The dinner menu also had some unique options like pan crisped pork belly, made with creamy goat cheese grits & sweet onion chutney. Seared ahi tuna – made with fresh vegetable salad and spicy mustard sauce. The entrée’s, served a la carte, encourage family-style sharing of appetizers and sides. We decided to test their hand at steaks and ordered a rib eye bone out, oscar style. It was rich, buttery and delicious. We also orders the special – Cedar, orange and tea-smoked filet mignon. This was served with lemongarlic butter, spring mushrooms, toasted pine nut ragout and prosciutto wrapped green beans. I’ve never described a steak as tasting “light and fresh” but this tender cut was the perfect choice for a warm spring evening.

Adding to Fleming’s uniqueness was the friendliness of the staff. I got the chance to speak to several of the servers, the manager and the chef. When I asked what they liked most about working at Fleming’s, there was a theme of “family” and “working together”. They all seemed to appreciate that people have a choice when going out to eat, so their motto is “whatever it takes!” Their goal is to make you glad you came and to bring out the best food possible. The dining crowd included fathers and sons, couples on dates, family gatherings and business meetings in their private dining rooms. When asked what else set them apart from other steak houses in Salt Lake City, manager, Joseph Wright, spoke excitedly about their consistent, excellent menu with the addition of weekly chef specials that are inspired by current trends. If you’re looking for the familiarity and comfort of a steak house with just the right amount of individuality, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar just might be your new favorite place.

Eat Here Now Take a bite and a sip of some new favorite culinary offerings in the valley - Flatbread and Bonneville Brewery!

Bonneville Brewery Bonneville Brewery, Utah’s newest locallyowned-and-operated brewery and restaurant, recently celebrated its grand opening. “Bonneville Brewery’s grand opening was an opportunity for us to celebrate our new restaurant with the public, as well as the expansion of Utah’s small, close-knit brewing community,” said Brad Shepherd, owner of Bonneville Brewery. “The combination of a great facility and experienced team of chefs, brewers, and managers offers a unique dining experience.” Bonneville Brewery completely remodeled the building that formerly housed the bar Tracks and now offers great detail and unique touches created by Ric Jedrziewski, the interior designer of several well-known establishments, including Stein Erickson Lodge in Park City. The restaurant boasts two large outdoor patios, a bar made entirely of recycled glass bottles, several large-screen TVs for entertaining, and unique pieces of art that tie into the local history of the area. The facility’s two levels provide a designated family-friendly downstairs area for dining, and an upstairs bar area for guests 21 and older. The new brewery’s kitchen is led by Executive Chef Joe Davis, who has more than 20 years of national and international cooking experience. Chef Davis’ fresh, made-in-house dishes like macaroni and cheese balls, chicken pot pie, in-house smoked chicken wings, and a housecured pastrami burger take a modern twist on traditional American comfort cuisine.

Flatbread is an upbeat Neapolitan pizzeria and wine bar specializing in serving authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizza certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) of Naples, Italy. They strictly adhere to the regulations set forth not only by the VPN, but by long-standing tradition. Flatbread’s certified Neapolitan pizza menu is complemented by additional creative pizzas, market fresh salads, fresh baked focaccia sandwiches, an extensive beverage program and an energetic, well-trained staff who have a passion for creating a memorable experience. 1044 East 2100 South, SLC; (801) 467-2180; flatbreadpizza.com

Naked Fish Bistro 67 West 100 South, SLC Naked Fish Bistro offers an extraordinary sushi bar and full menu of Japanese specialties–including traditional sukiyaki–served in a sleek tatami room, if you like. By the way, you don’t have to love raw fish to enjoy a meal at Naked Fish. From skewers of grilled Wagyu, marinated beef tongue and sizzling chicken, a range of small plates and entrees are equally inviting. The sake, wine, beer and tea list is also one of the best in town. The restaurant’s brewery, led by Eric Dunlap and Dave Watson, is currently producing eight solid interpretations of classic beer styles and plans to have four additional craft-brewed beers by summer, with flavors ranging from light and hoppy to dark and malty. The restaurant’s drink menu also includes a variety of specialty alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and family-friendly beverages such as homemade root beer and cream sodas.
