President’s Message 2019 Salt Lake Home Builders Association

Welcome to the 2019 Parade of Homes, one of Utah’s oldest and best traditions. I am excited to invite you to see great craftsmanship and the culmination of dreams and hard work. This year’s Parade of Homes features something for everyone with large custom homes and welldesigned urban town homes with roof top decks. As your buying preferences change so have the homes and the efforts of our builder members to showcase new and creative possibilities. I marvel at this year’s production of artfully designed and quality built homes. This Parade of Homes is our 73rd consecutive year of building the American Dream. We are proud to be a part of building the place where your most cherished memories are formed. As a student of architecture and building science, I enjoy learning about the way homes are best constructed. There have been substantial advances in science and technology in the last few years. These advances have increased the demand to own and live in new homes that are best suited to their owner’s modern preferences. As members of the Salt Lake Home Builders Association, we relish the opportunity to surprise and delight you with this year’s offering.

I was recently in New York and given the opportunity to tour the Empire State Building. I was dumbfounded when I realized that this 110 story edifice was built in less than 13 months! How did such a landmark get constructed in only 13 months? It was built in 1930 just as the Great Depression was starting and skilled labor was readily available. I took special note of the daily construction logs and schedules that kept them on track to build it so swiftly, I was mesmerized. This was especially shocking considering most of our larger custom homes in this year’s Parade took about the same time to construct. Thank you for coming to the Parade of Homes and dreaming with us. We thank you and all of our sponsors, builder members and skilled trade partners who have allowed this year’s dream to become a reality. Community Service We look forward every year to the time we can show off the work of our volunteer membership in presenting the Salt Lake Parade of Homes™. The parade gives us a chance to show off our talents in craftsmanship and ingenuity. As you walk through our homes, please take note of trends in materials and technology. Our members continually work toward building quality, efficient, comfortable, livable homes that are both affordable and environmentally friendly. Member driven organizations such as ours began so that commonly held beliefs could be achieved through collective efforts. These principles include promoting the dream of homeownership. When a citizenry enjoys their unalienable right to own a home, they are better equipped to delight in happiness as described in our Declaration of Independence. Over the last fifty years, we have averaged building 1.6 million homes a year. Since the Great Recession, we have yet to reach this average with 1.3 million expected to be built in 2019. The shortfall is a reason for the rising cost of housing. Our builders capacity is limited by scarcities in labor, local land use confinements, and government regulation. Our volunteer members advocate for effective ways to build needed housing so that every person who desires may have an opportunity to own their home in the community of their choice. At times it may seem like an uphill battle as the millennial generation just surpassed the baby boomers with by one million residents. These millennials will be active in the home buying market, in the years ahead, placing more significant pressure on the need for housing starts. Too, our households are aging, with over fifty percent (sixty- four million) being built before 1980. Be assured that when you purchase products or services from a Salt Lake Home Builders Association member, you are working with a dedicated professional who has subscribed to a higher standard. Through collaboration, our members unite in building homes that allow for lifelong memories.

You have likely read about or heard of the service project our members do each year. Examples are shown monthly on “Good Vibes” with Kylie on 97.1 ZHT. A current project with the foundation just poured is a new cabin we are building at Camp Kostopulos. It will house 24 counselors who will be able to engage 350 new children participants in camps, improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. They will enjoy recreation, education, and growth experiences recognized worldwide. This generous donation to those in need comes through our members, giving of their time and materials to benefit others. We thank each one of them for caring enough to participate in our ongoing community service efforts.
