President’s Message About the SLHBA

2015 Salt Lake Home Builders Association I have enjoyed membership in the SLHBA for more than 20 years. During that time, I have seen first-hand the enormous value of its membership. The SLHBA provides value through education and training, facilitating generous community service and advocating on behalf of homeownership. Members of the SLHBA share their experience, talents, insights and time with others to help each member be better and improve the industry. Association events, conferences and seminars have increased my understanding of building science and improved construction techniques. Some people say, “They don’t build them like they used to,” and my response is, “Thank goodness!” Homes today are built to be more durable, more comfortable, more affordable to own, and provide a healthier environment than homes in the past. Thank goodness we don’t build them like we used to. With new innovations and improvements, comes a level of complexity that requires up-to-date knowledge and skill by the builder and his trade contractors and suppliers. Selecting a SLHBA member as your builder will help ensure you are using some of the best informed leaders in the industry.

As an organization we are able to do amazing things in the community. We combine our time and materials to build an entire house solely on donations to benefit Habitat for Humanity. No single company could do that year after year, but as an association we can, and we do. Habitat for Humanity stabilizes families and changes lives for generations. Many of the homes in the Parade will feature Make-A-Wish rooms, with a portion of every ticket sold donated to Make-A-Wish of Utah. Other causes we have supported include scholarship funds, Road Home, Wounded Warriors, Shriner’s Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute and many more. Finally, the Association is actively involved at the local, state and national levels fighting continuously to help minimize regulations and laws that would make it harder for Utah families to afford a home of their own. We feel that homeownership is a fundamental part of the American Dream, and yet some groups push their own social agendas, or product promotion at the expense of homeownership. We fight to keep the dream alive for current and future generations. I hope you enjoy the beautiful style, fresh design and detailed craftsmanship of each home in the Parade. As you do, consider the great and varied accomplishments and contributions of the many men and women who make up the Salt Lake Home Builder’s Association. About the Program

Giving Back to Our Communities Through Service This will be our second year in presenting the “Parade of Playhouses” in the Salt Lake Parade of Homes™. The idea originated among committee members who felt there were some in life who may not be able to enjoy the benefits of homeownership. Some could be young children with terminal illnesses whose lives may not reach the age when one typically takes on this responsibility. In an effort to circumvent any shortfall in these lives, we build with the ideal of fulfilling unmet dreams. Our hope is that either a child with a dream or a need can find satisfaction in the generous contributions of our builders. Each playhouse is donated so that all money raised can be given to specific needs. The playhouse built by DR Horton will be sold with money collected going to the Fisher House, where our veteran military personnel seeking medical treatment can find refuge. The Steven Dailey Construction playhouses will be sold with money collected going to Pete Peterman Scholarship Fund promoting contract trade students and the Salt Lake Children’s Justice Center, lending a hand to a great need supporting children during the child abuse investigation process. And the Castle Creek South playhouse will be sold with money collected going to Shriners Hospital for Children in Salt Lake, meeting needs for children who may not have had resources for critical orthopedic and neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Come enjoy these remarkable creations on display at Home No. 4, and if desired, support us through donating to these wonderful organizations, or through buying a playhouse knowing that 100 percent of your purchase will be given to these charities. Gas fireplace trends you need to know One of the greatest architects of all time, Frank Lloyd Wright, once said, “The fireplace is the heart of the home.” It’s true. If you’re building or remodeling your home, curling up next to a cozy new gas fireplace may very well be in your future, and you’re not alone. In a recent study by the National Association of Homebuilders, homeowners ranked fireplaces among the top desired amenities for new homes. Gas fireplace styles and features for efficiency and safety have evolved considerably over the past 10 years. But since fireplaces aren’t something people buy every day, many homeowners are surprised, and delighted, to learn about the advancements and new styles available to them.

Intelligent Ignition Many of today’s gas fireplaces have state-of-the-art ignition systems that ensure safe functioning and conserve considerable energy. “Homeowners can save up to $10 a month on their gas utility bill by choosing a fireplace with intermittent pilot ignition vs. a standing pilot,” said Bob Ballard, senior vice president of marketing for Heat & Glo and Heatilator. For example, IntelliFire™ ignition systems (standard on Heat & Glo and Heatilator gas fireplaces), reduce gas use by providing an ignition flame only when the fireplace is operating, instead of a standing pilot that burns constantly 24/7. The energy savings is reason enough to invest in a fireplace with intermittent pilot ignition, but there’s another reason too. On June 1, 2015, the State of Utah passed a law requiring all new gas fireplace installations utilizing natural gas are equipped with intermittent pilot ignition. So, in Utah it’s now illegal to distribute, sell or install fireplaces with standing pilots. Food for thought.

Safety Matters Gas fireplaces produce fire, and fire is hot. “Everyone knows the risk of an open flame, but because most gas fireplaces are sealed systems, some homeowners don’t realize the glass gets very hot and can cause burns if touched,” said Gary Reuter, manager at Hearth and Home Distributors of Utah. This is especially concerning for households with

young children. The fix is a mesh screen installed directly over the glass that functions as a barrier, greatly reducing the risk. The fireplace industry has put considerable effort into raising awareness of the importance of screens, and in January 2015, the Federal government started requiring that all gas fireplaces produced are equipped with safety screens. “Hearth and Home Distributors of Utah sells only gas fireplaces equipped with screens,” said Reuter. “Heat & Glo and Heatilator, the two gas fireplace brands we carry, were instrumental supporting the screen requirement, and have included screens with their fireplaces for many years.”
