We surveyed 3,176 people in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and the UK. We also held 18 face-to-face sessions in France and Belgium. The objective was to find out key buying behaviors and packaging preferences for hard cheese products.
We asked a series of questions to shoppers who had bought at least one hard cheese product during the last 3 months.

PACKAGED HARD CHEESE IN BLOCK FORM IS THE MOST POPULAR
Most hard cheese bought in Europe comes packaged. Our research shows 89% of people across Europe purchase it this way, with the data revealing Italy is the only country to purchase unpackaged hard cheese in similar proportions to packaged.
In Sweden, the UK, France, and the Netherlands, the respondents purchased packaged hard cheese more often than unpackaged.
Block cheese is the most purchased format, with over 90% buying cheese in blocks. Grated and sliced cheese are purchased by more than 8 in 10 consumers, whereas small chunks are the least popular of these choices.

Depending on the country, the type of cheese preferred will vary dramatically. In France, the most popular hard cheese is Emmental, while it’s no surprise that Parmesan wins the hearts of Italian consumers. And cheddar is the top taste for UK consumers.
