the world to us.
In these crazy Covid times we are living through, it seems like we’ve put aside a lot of our favorite activities, like going out to eat and catching a movie at the multiplex. Sooner or later, we’ll get back to doing these things without giving them a second thought, but not yet it seems. One thing that I think a lot of people can’t wait to do again is travel. Fortunately for all of us, air travel has become much more affordable in the past decade. In fact, ease of travel around the world is one of the great things that the twenty-first century has given us, and more and more people are taking full advantage of the opportunity to explore our planet. Before any of us knew what a coronavirus was, it was easier than ever to hop on a plane and fly almost anywhere in the world. It’s important to remember, as Steve Leimberg notes in our August cover story, that there’s still a big, beautiful world out there, and with a little luck, we might get to see it again before long! Steve, a supremely talented photographer and frequent contributor to the Amelia Islander Magazine, has authored a cover story that couldn’t come at a better time. As we sit patiently in our homes, fantasizing about moving freely about the great wide world outside our doors, Steve has brought the world to us. An experienced traveler, Steve has happily strayed from the beaten path on his many excursions, visiting such exotic locales as Mongolia, Antarctica, Greenland, the Galapagos Islands, and Vietnam, as well as many of our magnificent national parks. Photography is how you capture what we are seeing on your trip, and photographs are an incomparable way to share with friends and family the felt experiences of your journey, the emotional impact of the things you are seeing. Once we all get the chance to travel again, Steve has some terrific tips to help us capture stunning images of our new adventures, even if only with our cellphone cameras. And, as he notes, if you’re not planning any trips yet, these tips work just as well here at home as they do in Antarctica! After you’ve cruised around the world, we hope you’ll enjoy catching up with what’s happening on Amelia Island, including an article on the Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach, an energetic group of local women who are celebrating 100 years of community service this year; a “Fernandina Faces” from Dickie Anderson on Joyce and Neil Frink; an “Eyes to the Skies” on the beautiful Mississippi Kite; a “Backyard Adventure” on sailing the Cumberland Sound with Windward Sailing; and much more.

TIPS ON TRAVEL PICS

STORY AND PHOTOS BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
W
e have all been cloistered to varying degrees for so long now that sometimes we may forget there’s a beautiful world out there! Hopefully, we’ll get to see it again before long. I am always amazed at how well-traveled Amelia Islanders are, and how excited they are to share their experiences with others. Photography is one the best ways to convey what you saw and felt at different times and places to friends and family, and to recall those memories and the excitement they created when you return, even many years later. In fact, if you can’t leave Amelia Island, there’s a stunning world to see right here in our beautiful island home! All these travel tips I share here will work just as well here as they will in Antarctica. People often look at my images and say, “You must have a great camera!” Of course, that’s true, but as a professional, I’ve invested heavily in good equipment. But it’s not (just) about the price of the camera or the lens. (“Pablo Picasso, you must have the world’s best brushes!” “Julia Childs, you must have 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
great pots and pans!” “Ernest Hemmingway, you must have an incredible typewriter!”) Today, cell phones can take great – even magnificent – pictures. In fact, anyone can take a good picture. But to make a great travel picture, here are some tips that will work for you. These are techniques that I remind myself about before every trip, and which I always practice with a new camera or lens before I go, while taking (and re-reading) the camera manual and some spare batteries. “Why am I taking a camera?” “What am I hoping to bring back, to say, each time I click the shutter button?” “What story do I want to tell?” “What do I want a person looking at my images to feel? “Why do I want to remember this moment?” “What is my Point of Interest (P.O.I.)?” “Where do I want my viewer to really focus on?” “What is my key subject?” Your answers to these questions should inform: (1) what you point your camera or cell phone at; (2) if you should even click the shutter button; and (3) influence how you employ the rest of my suggestions.
AUGUST 2020
www.AmeliaIslander.com
1 1/ FRAME Ask yourself if there is a way to “frame” your image. In other words, use what is there to force your viewer’s eye to where you want it to go—to your point of interest. Think about the background and change it or where you are standing so that it adds information and compliments rather than detracts from your purpose. 2/3 DIAGNALS AND CURVES Look for natural diagonals or triangles in the scene, lines that move the viewer through the picture. The idea is to keep the viewer’s mind active and “into” and involved with the action. Search for shapes, textures, lines, form, and bright colors. Curves, for example, like diagonals, bring your viewer’s mind into the image and can direct or draw attention to your main point of interest.

4 4/5 WIDE AND TALL Turn your camera to fit your subject to your vision. For instance, shoot wide subjects horizontally and tall subjects vertically. That helps better record what impressed you about what you saw and accentuate the point you are trying to make. But don’t be afraid to break this (or any other) “rule!”

6 6/ PEOPLE “People” your pictures. Including people in your images helps to show the scale of a building or mountain and adds perspective that connects with the viewer. Showing people’s faces and dress helps illustrate what was important to you to those who were not on the trip and how what you saw differed from what they see in their everyday lives at home.
7
7/ HUMOR Be alert to humor. It’s everywhere! You’ll see it on walls, and even through store windows! It brings back a very human aspect of your adventure and reminds us of our commonality with nature and our fellow humans – even those at the far ends of the earth.

8 8 OFF CENTER, ON CENTER Move your main subject off the center (typically toward one of the four corners of the image). That awakens and alerts your viewer to the importance you place on your main subject. But also look for subjects that are best portrayed in balance, maybe because balance is part of their essence. Put them in the center.

10/ DRAMA QUEEN Become a drama queen (or king)! Some of the best days to do travel shots are those when everyone else is going inside to museums. Look for dramatic skies and threatening clouds, for any kind of unusual weather. Early mornings and late afternoons usually have more intense and colorful lighting. (But pose your people in shade).
10
Safety: Please be careful out there. Be aware of your personal security and keep your equipment close. Don’t take foolish chances. Be mindful of nature and don’t disturb or threaten birds or other creatures. Pack out what you brought in. Finally, and most importantly, have fun! There is of course, so much more to learn. When the coronavirus threat passes, Wild Amelia and the Island Art Association Photography Group both offer classes and meetings where you can hone your skills and learn from others. 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

The Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival Big Band Benefit Gala on September 5 at the Omni Resort has been postponed due to the Covid-19 virus until Saturday, February 13. Despite the postponement, DeMerle, Artistic Director of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, is busily preparing for this year’s festival, scheduled for October 4 to October 11. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, the Jazz Festival will present several worldclass performances virtually, retaining popular themes from previous festivals. The AIJF will broadcast highlights of past festivals, featuring Delfeayo Marsalis, Nestor Torres, Bria Skonberg, and more. This year’s headliners John Pizzarelli and clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski will be rescheduled to the 2021 festival, but they will perform a few songs virtually this year as a preview of things to come. DeMerle will also interview headliners Pizzarelli, Peplowski, festival favorite Trio Caliente, and others during the festival week. The Dynamic Les DeMerle Jazz Trio and Little Big Band with Bonnie Eisele will perform tributes to Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holliday on the festival weekend. 2020 AIJF Scholarship winner jazz drummer Janae Yates will also play. Members of the not-for-profit artist cooperative refused to accept limitations and have risen to the occasion, harnessing technology to bring their art to the screens and devices of visitors. Trish Jones, Karen Bowden, and Cindy Jenkins, three new additions to the PAGG roster, turned a challenge into an opportunity and have been instrumental in launching a new website and social media campaign. The site, with links to a social media platform, is a virtual tour of every piece on display in the gallery at any given time. Profiles of the artists accompany the work. Using the Facebook messenger system, a virtual visitor or prospective buyer can make an appointment for a private in-person showing in order to avoid contact with other patrons. PAGG’s Facebook page currently has more than 1,000 followers. Two other venues on the island feature the artwork
of PAGG members: Isle of Amelia Executive Suites, located at 5422 First Coast Highway and Osprey Village, as well as the Amelia Island Plantation Real Estate office. Two categories of membership support PAGG’s community of art enthusiasts. One is the “Exhibiting Member” category for those who, after meeting certain criteria, exhibit their art at the gallery. These members also staff the gallery, hold an office, or serve on a committee. Currently, PAGG has 41 Exhibiting Members. The second type of membership is the “Art Lovers Membership,” which is designed for those who choose not to exhibit but want to support the Gallery and Guild by participating in events, presentations, lessons, workshops, and classes. They may also choose to assist by acting as gallery hosts. PAGG was formed to promote art enrichment, as a showcase for artists and a platform for activities of the Guild, and to sustain an active membership. In August, Sandra Hughes is the featured “Corner Show” artist. For more information, call (904) 432-1750 or visit www.paggart. com and their Facebook page.

evin and Jessie O’Brien are the husband and wife team behind First Love Brewing. “Over the past ten years, Jessie and I have been working towards our dream of owning and operating our own brewery.” says Kevin. On June seventeenth, their dream became a reality when they opened First Love Brewing here in Fernandina Beach. Jessie has worked as a professional brewer for years and has experience in everything from recipe development to quality assurance. Last year, she completed the World Brewing Academy’s diploma in Advanced Brewing Theory and is now pursuing a master’s degree in Brewing Science from Auburn University. Kevin earned a marketing degree from the University of Maine, and, after college, became the marketing director of a tennis club in Nassau County. Kevin is now looking forward to using his marketing and business expertise to grow First Love as the brewery’s general manager. Together they make a great team. “We share a passion for quality beer and cuisine, and we are excited to share our passion with the community.” says Jessie. Their wide selection of craft beers include something for every patron: Little Shadow Porter, a chocolatey dark beer; Piper Red IPA, a “hop monster” with rich, malty character; Sunrise…. Sunset American Blonde, a refreshing lager; and Addition by Subtraction Session IPA, for a hoppy yet lightweight option. They also serve handcrafted pizzas, house cut fries, and other tasty treats. hannon, Sandie, and their son, Josh, are Fernandina Beach locals who love meeting new people and sharing their passion for fishing. But don’t waste your time asking the O’Conners where their favorite fishing spot is located because you’ll get the standard answer. “Oh, it’s east of here,” Josh laughs, meaning it’s somewhere out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. RennWorks Outdoors is a family-owned business with a down home feel. Opening eight months ago at their Fernandina Beach location, it’s the perfect place to go for all of your high-end fishing needs, whether you fish for fun or for sport. With a huge selection of rods, reels, line, and gear"with brands like AFTCO, AFW, Abu Garcia, Check’n Bottom Hex Carbon Products, Daiwa, Fathom Offshore, Momoi Diamond Braids, Penn, Saltwater Assassin, Toadfish, Top Shelf Shimano, and Z-Man Lures, as well as a selection of premium baits"they have everything you need for a relaxing day of fishing or competing in a tournament. “We hope that RennWorks Outdoors will be a place where locals come to gather and share fishing stories once the pandemic is over,” says O’Conner, “but until then, we are more than happy to offer call-ahead service and practice safety precautions at the store. Fishing has always been a great escape from stress, so we want to make sure everyone has what they need to do just that.” Visit them in the Amelia Island Industrial Park at 2440 Lynndale Road or call ahead at (904) 310-6794.

n 1868, Jane Cunningham Croly, a professional journalist, attempted to attend a dinner at an all-male press club honoring British novelist Charles Dickens. Croly was denied admittance based upon her gender, and in response, formed a women’s club called “Sorosis,” the first professional women’s club in the United States. In 1890, when 63 more clubs officially ratified the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ constitution, the GFWC was born. This year, the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach is celebrating 100 years of community service since it was organized on November 3, 1920. Although the club began as the Ladies Civic League in 1913, the original and ongoing objective and aim of the club was to work to better the lives of others, make Fernandina Beach a better place to live, and extend the hand of friendship to anyone who was interested in joining. The ladies were and are a diverse group with talents, interests, and backgrounds united by a dedication to community improvement through volunteer service. “From the very beginning, members involved themselves in ways to make things better,” says current president Sue 31 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Dwyer. “Trash cans were purchased and distributed on the main streets, books were obtained for the public school rooms for the start of a library, plans were made which resulted in a referendum to raise the millage tax to fund the building of a new school, now Fernandina Beach Middle School, and club women were instrumental in convincing Senator Duncan Fletcher to preserve Fort Clinch and eventually turn it into a state park.” Mary Powell, former president of the local club and former state president of the Florida GFWC, states that the focus of the Club has always been to serve the needs of the community at large. “In 1952, the Club sponsored a referendum for mosquito control, and in 1953, the dental clinic, which would last for 21 years, was begun with Dr. and Mrs. Bill Rodeffer donating one-half of their time to performing necessary dental work for underprivileged children,” says Powell. Also in 1952, the Club began sponsoring Little Women, a club for high school girls interested in being involved in community service. The Woman’s Club has worked with and continued on next page

Over the years, upgrades have been made on the clubhouse to meet the needs of the community. “This year, our goal is to work on needed restoration of the clubhouse,” says Dwyer. “In honor of our Club’s 100th birthday celebration, we are beginning a new quarterly fundraising project called ‘Dining Around the World,’ and the Club will provide birthday bags for Meals on Wheels each month.”

Joyce & Neil Frink BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
J
oyce and Neil Frink are passionate about their home and its history. Both are leaders in Amelia Island’s religious and civic community. Born in Old Town, Neil is a true island native. His mother was Serena Traeye, whose family can be traced in this area back to the 1700s. Son of the first licensed African American pogy boat captain, he remembers fishing for the oily pogy fish that was processed on the island and turned into fertilizer. Most people associate Amelia Island with its successful shrimping industry, but at one time, the harvesting of menhaden or pogy was just as important to the local economy. It was big business until the area was overfished and concerns about the unavoidable odor associated with processing the small fish were increasing. The last plant closed in the 1980s. Neil lived for many years in South Jersey and Philadelphia, where he was employed for 31 years in the automotive industry. In 1996, Joyce and Neil moved back to Fernandina. Neil worked for Amelia Island Plantation for 17 years, retiring for the second time in 2013. Neil has a passion for history and has served as president of the A. L. Lewis Historical Society, Peck High School Alumni Association, and the Fernandina Beach chapter of the Association for the Study and Preservation of African-American History. Joyce is originally from the Philadelphia area, where she received her nursing degree from Temple University and continued her education by training as a nurse anesthetist. She enjoyed a 36-year career in that field. After the Frinks’ move to Fernandina Beach, she continued working as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. 37 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
She is actively involved at St. Peter Episcopal Church in the Episcopal Women’s group and has served as its president. She volunteers as a nurse at Barnabas, has served on the board of Friends of the Library, the Nassau County Library board, and the Nassau County Democratic Executive Board. What does she do for fun? She loves her hobby of making jewelry, and travel is high on the list of things she enjoys. Neil and Joyce are most proud of the American Beach Museum and the increased interest in the history of this unique beach community on Amelia Island. Neil serves on the museum’s Board of Directors, where he has continued the work of the legendary MaVynee Betsch, who was determined to protect American Beach and preserve its history. Known as “The Beach Lady,” MaVynee was the great-granddaughter of A.L. Lewis, a founder of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company and cofounder of American Beach. She maintained extensive archives in her motorhome and successively convinced Nassau County to build a Community Center and local election site in American Beach, which opened in 2014. The Community Center houses the museum, special programs, and is a local polling station. School groups and organizations schedule visits to the museum. As the couple reflects on the changes to their home island, they are amazed at the growth, especially off the island. They enjoy the wide variety of restaurant options now available, remembering years ago when the choices were mainly seafood and barbecue. On the downside is the increased traffic. Joyce and Neil have a son in Jacksonville and share their home with a Maine Coon Cat named Ciara. Amelia Island is a better place through the many volunteer efforts of Joyce and Neil Frink.

soaring summer kites With their pointy wings and piercing two-note call, beautiful Mississippi Kites visit Amelia Island in spring and summer to nest and help out with local pest control. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL E. PFOH
A
h, the sights and sounds of our Amelia Island summer skies! Fluffy cumulus clouds, bright blue skies, the sound of thunder rolling across the Amelia River, and Carolina Wrens calling to their fledglings. I hope this month you have the chance to enjoy the glorious purple, orange, and reds of a sunset over a salt marsh or a view of a cloudless night sky from our beaches, where you might even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way. And be sure to keep your “eyes to the skies” throughout the summer for beautiful kites. Fast-flying, feathered kites with no 45 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
strings attached, that is. Kites, with their pointy wings and pearlgrey plumage, can pluck anoles from tree branches and help us with pest control. Sound familiar? Then you have probably encountered a Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis). Mississippi Kites are one of the two species of “feathered kites” that visit our area in the summer months. (The other is the Swallow-tailed Kite.) HawkWatch International tells us that Mississippi Kites have a wingspan of about 32 inches, with long, pointy wings and a long wedge-shaped tail. (Note that Swallow-tailed Kites that visit us are much larger, with a 48-inch wingspan and an unmistakable forked tail.) Mississippi Kites have ruby-red eyes framed in coal-black feathers. They appear gray overall, but in fact they are shades of gray, white, and rufous. These colors are displayed brilliantly when you see a topside view of these buoyant flyers as they careen across the sky. Julie Wraithmell, Executive Director of Audubon Florida, says “they are the colors of bruised thunderclouds”. Their diet includes insects, which they often eat as they fly. They have a distinctive, piercing, two-note whistling call. continued on next page.
AUGUST 2020
www.AmeliaIslander.com
Mississippi Kites spend the winter in South America. During their migration to their breeding grounds here in the southeastern United States, they fly approximately 5,000 miles each way. The perilous, arduous journey takes them over mountains, through violent storms, over bayous, marshes, and often across miles and miles of water with no place to land! They arrive in our area in April, approximately a month later than the Swallow-tailed Kites. They leave our area after they fledge their young, which is usually toward the end of August. Mississippi Kites, like most other raptors, are very loyal to their nest location. So, if they build a nest in Egans Creek Greenway, Yulee, or perhaps in your own backyard (yes, this happens!), they are very likely to return to that nest each year. Once the pair is reunited here in their nest territory, they begin a courtship phase leading up to nesting and 30 days of incubation. During courtship, the male will often bring his mate gifts of food. You will see the male and female kites flying with the sticks they use to build a small nest or repair their nest from the previous year. They gather sticks by breaking them from treetops. Nest building is also part of Kite courtship. Mississippi and Swallowtailed Kites use smaller sticks than other raptor species such as the Osprey. As they work together, a pair of Mississippi Kites can be heard calling to each other softly using calls only heard between a mated pair or perhaps with their nestling(s). It is different from their usual familiar 2-note call. The breeding range of the Mississippi Kite also extends west to places like Oklahoma and Kansas. In recent years, they have also nested in Virginia and even as far north as New England. The species is known to be gregarious, and in some areas, they nest in colonies. Keep your eyes to the summer skies! For more information on Mississippi Kites, visit fl.audubon.org or hawkwatch.org. 46 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

coastal shrubs While enjoying your garden during the summer heat, you can still add pretty coastal shrubs like Lemon Beauty and Daphne Odora Pink in early morning or late evening. BY BETTY MORRELL
T
he sultry “dog days” of summer are here. All the early work has paid off, and I am enjoying everyone’s garden, along with my own. However, the heat shouldn’t preclude us from planting, as long as it’s early in the morning or late in the day, and then be sure to water, water, water. I came across a very pretty shrub for a coastal garden called Lemon Beauty (Lonicera nitidia). This lovely salttolerant mounding shrub, which grows to 3 feet by 3 feet, enjoys full sun to partshade and can be used as a border or small hedge. Its graceful arching branches can be left natural or pruned into a topiary or formal shrub. The variegated green leaves have creamy borders that contrast beautifully with the burgundy stems. It is sometimes called Box Honeysuckle or Wilson’s Honeysuckle. I love fragrant shrubs, and I found a delightful one called Daphne Odora Pink. This shrub blooms early in the garden, beginning in late winter. The flowers are beautiful clusters of lilac sitting on top of glossy green foliage. It likes full sun to dappled shade and

attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Prune Daphne in summer. It will bloom from late winter to early spring, when not much else is in bloom. An upright growing shrub, it will reach 4 to 5 feet in height and width. It can be planted in containers, where you can enjoy its sweet jasmine-like fragrance. I received a question about Fatsia. This plant does well here and likes a shady location. Fatsia can take a little morning sun, but its leaves burn easily so shade is best. Fatsia is a Japanese Aralia and it has a real tropical appearance, with big glossy dark green, deeplylobed, fan-like leaves that grow to 16 inches across on long stalks. A moderate grower, it will reach 5 to 8 feet, with roundish clusters of small whitish flowers in fall and winter, followed by

clusters of small, shiny black fruit on sparse branches. It grows in nearly all soils (except soggy ones) and adapts well to container planting. During extreme dry spells, wash the plants occasionally with the hose to clean the leaves and lessen insect attack. If they become spindly, you can rejuvenate by cutting back hard in early spring. Plants that set fruit often self-sow. They are useful near swimming pools, shaded entryways, or patios. A smaller option for the Fatsia is the Moseri, which grows compact and low, with beautiful variegated leaves, edged in golden yellow to creamy white. If you need some color in your shade garden, don’t rule out Caladiums. They come in colors that really pop, in whites, reds, pinks, striped, speckled, and solid. They will die back in winter, but when you least expect it, color will pop up in your garden! Enjoy these lazy days of summer before we get back into the gardening season. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

ave and Kathy Miller are quick to tell you that, after living in two other houses, they are now settled in the Amelia Island home that is perfect for them. The Millers have been closely linked to the evolution of Amelia Island Plantation. Dave Miller Sr. was the president of JCPenney when he heard about Amelia Island. He decided to check it out and instantly bought five unbuilt condominiums. Approaching retirement, Miller Sr. and his wife, Glo, bought their first house in 1989. The small three-bedroom, threebath home had a tiny kitchen, a breakfast area, and a large 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
great room. The house was a constant gathering place for friends and family. Real estate is in the Millers’ DNA. Dave Sr. and Dave Jr. established a successful business that bought, sold, and operated various real estate holdings and businesses. Dave Sr. was known for his generosity and philanthropy. The David. F. Miller Center for Retailing Education and Research at the University of Florida is named for him. He also led the initiative to form a Boys and Girls Club here in Nassau County, which is named the Miller Freedom Center in his honor.

Dave Sr. was an original University of Florida Bull Gator and an avid supporter of the Orange and Blue. The next generation is represented by Kathy and Dave’s son, James, who has joined his father in the family real estate business. Dave Jr. and his wife, Kathy, purchased the first of their three Amelia island homes in 2001. It was just down the road from “Pop and Glo’s” house. After his wife’s passing, Dave Sr. undertook a major remodeling of the house. This included adding a large sunroom, a large screened-in back porch, a kitchen remodel, and an over-the-garage suite. For their second home on Amelia, Kathy and Dave decided to downsize and try oceanfront living. Again, using 52 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
their skills for renovation, they worked with Julie Johnson and Benjie McEntryre of Julia Hall Interiors. However, at the time of Dave Sr.’s passing, the couple found it impossible to let the family home go. For their final stop, Kathy and Dave decided to settle in the original Miller home on Amelia Island. Once again, the couple called on Julie and Benjie to help with the remodel. “Julie and Benjie are masters at taking what we own, such as special antiques, collections, and artwork, and working them into a new, updated look,” shares Kathy. The original footprint of the house remains, but major changes were made during the five-month renovation. Kathy and Dave lived in the suite above the garage during the

Even the marshside screened porch with its favorite fireplace was replaced. The interior was reconfigured. The most dramatic change was reclaiming space over the kitchen. A space that housed air handlers became a dramatic lofted ceiling. A gorgeous Aidan Gray chandelier created and designed to give that “one-of-akind” look hangs over an inviting round table. My guest for dinner tonight was one of my Advanced Culinary students, Kaleia Cayce, who was a huge part of our culinary program last year. She competed at the Florida Restaurant Association Grilled Cheese competition, helped take a third place trophy at the Daytona State College Sharpen Your Skills Competition, and helped secure a top ten finish in the Florida ProStart Hot Food Competition. In addition to competing, Kaleia was always ready to help, prepared to work hard, and a pleasure to have around. Sometimes growth comes at a tremendous cost. On this night, we met to talk about life and the future, and how to live without her father, who had very recently passed away. Navigating such a conversation is difficult, but delicious food seems to make everything a little easier. The air was still heavy with rain as I made my way up the front stairs. The look of delight and disappointment on the hostess’s face told me the restaurant was at capacity, but I knew this was going to happen. Cucina South is one of the most popular dining options on the south end of the island, located on First Coast Highway in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Village. Walking into the restaurant is a comforting experience, like entering the home of a friend, one who has a beautiful pizza oven in the living room. But tonight, I ordered our food to go. We took our dinner to one of the picnic pavilions at Peter’s Point Beach Park. The sun was setting, and the sky was alight, with an easterly sea breeze keeping the bugs at bay and the temperature mild. Our advanced culinary squad is small compared to my other classes, and I get twice as much time with them, so I knew what kind of food Kaleia would like. Since we were going picnic-style, I ordered a few things to share. We started with the Greek Flatbread, an elliptical disc of 58 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
molten mozzarella with olives, roasted red peppers, pickled red onions, and feta. The powerful flavors and crispy crust make this appetizer a real smash. For our entrée, we enjoyed the Angel Hair Freshness, the very best of what summertime tastes like: delicate angel hair pasta tossed with olive oil, finished with a
vine-ripened tomato bruschetta, fresh grated parmesan cheese, and basil-infused olive oil. Since we weren’t dining in, I didn’t consider dessert, but I did bring an order of their wonderful polenta. The polenta is creamy and rich, topped with Pecorino Romano and a Chianti demi-glace. The time together and meal we shared were perfect, and as the light began to fade, we went our separate ways. In troubled times, the people who prepare and serve our food continue to demonstrate the spirit, charity, and good will of America. A salute to all the unsung heroes of the food and beverage world, and a special thank you to my neighbor, Tanner Blake, and his staff for this memorable evening. Please call ahead or visit cucinasouth.com as seating is limited.

and even cabins for overnight excursions. A trampoline is located at the front of the boat where we could sprawl out as we skimmed across the water, and in the stern is a table and chairs where we enjoyed our snacks and beverages. We sailed up the Amelia River toward Cumberland Island, passing by the port of Fernandina, Old Town, and Fort Clinch, and Troy remarked how close Cumberland is to Fernandina by water, compared to the many miles one has to drive in a car to reach St. Marys, Georgia, and then take a ferry. We spotted several of Cumberland’s legendary wild horses, along with a pod of dolphins, and a myriad of other boats. Captain Tony knows everyone on the water—sailors and fishermen alike—as he and Cindy have been conducting sailing charters and sailing lessons on these waters for over 15 years.

hat do you give to a man who has everything? A birthday sailing adventure on The Voyage 370, a catamaran excursion hosted by Cindy and Tony Jones from Windward Sailing! It just so happens that my husband, Troy, and his friend, Doug, have birthdays in late July, so I invited Doug and his wife, Jane, to join us on an afternoon sail with Cindy and Tony. We were eager for some time on the beautiful waterways around Amelia and Cumberland Islands, and the weather that day was perfect. Windward’s “Fun Sails” are ideal for family fun, romantic getaways, and other social events, and can be booked for various times and locations, either out of Fernandina Beach or Jacksonville. Tony suggested we sail at 5 p.m. because the wind would be better, so Jane and I planned a “happy hour” trip with champagne and hors d’oeuvres to celebrate our husbands’ birthdays. Windward’s “cat” is a fabulous sailboat with all the amenities you can imagine, including a full kitchen, bathroom, 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
At one point, we spotted a balloon in the water, and Tony managed to pull the cat directly over the balloon so Troy could scoop it up with a net. Tony told us that all the local boat captains are encouraged to remove plastic from the waterways, and we were happy to hear this practice is a priority in our local boating industry. As we got halfway into our 2-hour excursion, the wind picked up and soon we were sailing at about 8 knots, which is an exhilarating speed on a sailboat. Something that I never realized about a sailing trip was how quiet it is on the water! We could hear wind, waves, and seagulls easily, laying on our backs and watching the sails billowing overhead as we cut through the water off Cumberland Island. Windward Sailing offers numerous charter opportunities for two to 12 guests, depending on which boat you choose for your 2- to 6-hour excursions, and even overnight trips that include dinner and breakfast on board. If you are interested in learning to sail, Windward is a member of the American Sailing Association and offers courses taught by USCG captains at their classroom at 714 Beech Street. They also offer several online classes that you can take from the comfort of your home. Windward Sailing’s dock is located at 5 South Front Street, to the left of Brett’s Waterway Cafe. For more information about excursions and sailing classes, visit their website at www.windwardsailing.com or call them at (904) 327-3265.
