The same principle applies in our own lives. Our usual daily routines, whether they involve work, family, friendships, and even our marriages, can lead us into familiar patterns that prevent us from seeing things as they really are. Sometimes these patterns are called ruts. We begin doing things the way we always do, by default, failing to fully enter the situation, to consider the task or person we are involved with, closed off from nuance and new insights. That can mean we are losing touch with those moments of discovery, those flashes of fresh insight, which feed our souls and make life such an incredible adventure. This phenomenon can even occur in a striking setting like Amelia Island. Some of the particular beauty of this island, which captured our imagination when we first came here, may not excite us in the same way anymore. As we become accustomed to a place, we don’t see it with fresh eyes as we did in the beginning, or, as sometimes happens, we become content with the iconic images and fail to look any further. Amelia Island photographer Steve Leimberg has sought out with his camera enchanting scenes around the island that many of us may have overlooked. He has created a series of photographs entitled “Unseen Amelia,” in which he captures images of Amelia we may not be familiar with, or perhaps familiar images looked at from a new perspective, whether at a different time of day, from a new angle, or by looking for beauty where we don’t expect to find it. We found Steve’s photos captivating and intriguing—an invitation to see more of the depth and beauty of our island home—and we hope you do, too. As Amelia Island continues to receive more and more attention from new visitors and from the national media, familiar images of our island home are entering into wider circulation. Centre Street, our well-preserved downtown thoroughfare; Fort Clinch; hardworking shrimp boats at the harbor—these are images that we know well from our own experience as well as from their appearance on websites and visitor guides. Sometimes we know them so well that they lose their ability to move us. We may give them little notice at all. Increased familiarity may lead to a diminished ability to see and appreciate something.

I hope these images help you see and appreciate the splendor and treasure of our island like you never have before. In your wonderings—with or without a camera—ask yourself, “What if?” “What if I explore places on the island I’ve never been to before?” “What if I walk the path less traveled?”

Through these images, I want to point out how your respect and love of Amelia can change for a number of different reasons, such as: experiencing a place by day or night; the time of day (color changes with temperature); looking in places and directions you’ve never stopped to look at before; seeing beauty and wonder where we don’t usually expect to see it (even in our local industries); by changing perspective, like looking down or up when you’ve never done that before.

RIGHT | Russell Conwell, founder of Temple University in Philadelphia, wrote a world-famous book entitled, Acres of Diamonds. Its theme was about a man who searched the world for wealth only to find it in his own back yard. The book, and the presentations it inspired, was one of the first to provide positive motivational thinking and it influenced some of our country’s greatest movers and shakers. This image, made at “blue hour”, when the sun’s rays deepen and saturate blues and greens, was captured from the back of my home on the marsh. The marshes of Amelia Island are breathtaking at sunset, a simple and profound gift to its residents and a reminder that everything we could want lies at feet if we only go out to discover and enjoy it.

ABOVE | This is the Historic District at night, looking toward the Port of Fernandina with a wide and high view starting from the left at the waterfront. The incredible diversity of Amelia Island can be grasped by noting that our community includes recreational boating visitors; residential neighborhoods; a thriving business district; and a vibrant commercial shipping port. The different colored lights create a scene as if a painter was creating a rich pastel, perhaps as a background for a movie. The viewer is invited to wonder what’s happening not only in the “active” welllit buildings and structures, but also in the dark and obscure parts that display just a twinkling of lights.

ABOVE | I ﬁrst found Amelia Island in the 1970’s via the waterfront on my 46-foot Amel sailboat. Little did I know it would someday be my home, but I suspect that many of us here were introduced to the island in similar fashion. I wanted this image to show the scope of what was both the past and the future of the island, from the dozens of beautiful sport ﬁshing boats in the foreground to the muscular shipping facilities in the background, the industry in the far center, and the town itself, garnished, cooled, and sheltered with our stunning trees.

RIGHT | It’s quite amazing that a place as relatively small as Amelia has a well-run and thriving private jet capable airport. It was my great fortune to meet with several of the pilots, including Bob Brown, who made it possible for me to capture the scope of our incredible Fort Clinch. I had been inside many times, and thanks to Kevin McCarthy and his wonderful boat cruises, viewed it from the river. But grasping the dimension of this ediﬁce from the air was an entirely new and different experience. Likewise, my friend Matt Drahzal, another incredible pilot, made many other sky views possible, and the ever-creative Stan Cottle introduced me to the world of drones. But you don’t always need a plane or drone or helicopter to get dramatic views. Sometimes, shooting from a well-supported ladder or second-story window—or getting down real low—will make all the difference.

The marsh is a theme I continually return to in my photography. It’s like a wonderful maze, ever changing with the tides and time of day. At times, the marsh is totally covered with water, and we see people kayaking and paddleboarding. At other times, the tide is so low that egrets and raccoons roam the dry marsh bed searching for crabs to eat. These next two images are again from my backyard and show how different the marsh can look, depending on the time of day, the season, and the pull of the moon.

This image is a constant reminder to me of the words in the song, “Everything is beautiful, in its own way.” Could an old master meticulously painting a cathedral in France ﬁnd such awe and splendor? Rayonier plus sunset plus trees plus sailboats on the water: “Who could ask for anything more?”

This ﬁnal image is an allegory. The shadows seem so long and yet the span of our lives is—as the people in it—so short. A photographer’s lesson to self about time—and timing. And a reminder that a different perspective than usual will often provide us with a dramatically changed or augmented view of the way things “really” are.

Two more marsh images, again both within walking distance of my back deck. One of my favorite poems is “Renaissance” by Edna St. Vincent Millay. The poem speaks of the circle of life and death, with its rotting, rebirth, and redemption. Together, these two images remind me of her most soul-restoring words.

Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library is pleased to announce the opening of their latest art exhibit, “Air and Water: The Art of Mingming.” Presented through October, this exhibit showcases the watercolor and oil painting of local artist Mingming Bowerson. Originally from China, Mingming has enjoyed painting as long as she can remember. A childhood friend of her parents, a famous Chinese artist, taught her how to draw and paint, unlocking a talent that has won her numerous awards throughout her lifetime. Featured pieces in the exhibit include works with boats, harbors, landscapes, and floral still lifes. The work is notable for its exquisite, photographic-like detail. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Casey moved to Amelia Island 22 years ago, initially creating art in her studio space at Blue Door Artists. But in 2017, she realized she needed a larger space to work in, so she opened her own studio and gallery at 813 South 8th Street. Casey’s artwork has been collected all over the world and featured in national publications such as Coastal Living Magazine, House Beautiful, Luxe Design, Domino, and on HGTV. Paul Moerman, manager of Gateway Mortgage, has been with the Fernandina Beach branch since its opening in November 2017. He is originally from St. Simons Island, Georgia, but he moved to Atlanta and then North Carolina before traveling to the Northeast and Tennessee for work. One summer on a visit home to St. Simons, Paul met his spouse. Both of their families had vacation homes in Fernandina Beach, and of course, they loved coming to Amelia Island. Eventually, they bought their first home here from Paul’s grandfather in 2009. “I love driving over the bridge and feeling like I’m home. Dodge, a professional dancer formerly of the acclaimed Paul Taylor Dance Company in New York City and other well-known companies, launched the Amelia Island Dance Festival in 2019. With an expanding band of enthusiastic fans, it has grown substantially since then. Every show each year has sold out, says Dodge. This year’s festival, running September 9 to September 11, will feature a dazzling array of classical and contemporary dance styles, from ballet to hip hop, tap to ballroom, and modern dance.

Star performers from last year will be joined by new nationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles, as well as highly talented local dancers. Saturday and Sunday matinees have been added, and twelve workshops will be offered this year. Performances will take place at Amelia Island Community Theatre (ACT), with its comfortable seating and large performance stage.

Dodge also loves to create dance amidst the natural beauty of Amelia Island. In 2020, when theaters were closed due to Covid, she enticed dancers to Amelia Island to make “Spots on Amelia,” a video showcasing local landmarks, including ballerinas on the beach, tap dancing at the marina, a pas de deux at the airport, hip-hop on the downtown post office steps, and more. She’s had dancers perform from Boneyard Beach to Egans Creek and Fort Clinch. Walking trips offer a unique and memorable way to explore new and interesting places. For more than 20 years, my sister, Betsy Smith, and I have explored many parts of the world, mostly on foot. Our preference is feet-on-theground exploring rather than cruises or other travel options. It’s the ultimate slow travel, taking your time to get from one place to another. You are close to the ground and close to experiences you would never have if you were traveling by car or bus. And after a good long walk, you can eat all you want! We challenge ourselves not only by walking each day of our trip, but by exploring new parts of the world. Our trips have ranged from exotic (Egypt, South Africa, and Patagonia) to more traditional (England, Scotland, Italy, and Spain). We have traveled with several different companies that offer walking and hiking trips, including Wilderness Travel and Country Walkers. The trips are rated, allowing travelers to determine the one best suited to their level of walking. The tougher walks might be longer and include more elevation. The groups are small, ideally ten or less, and usually congenial, as everyone shares a love of walking. You should be in good shape and have accrued some mileage on the ground at home before you commit to a trip, and wear good shoes or boots. As our annual trips approach, we ramp up our walking miles. All our trips involve some altitude. It’s not easy to practice climbs when you live on a very flat island in Florida or a coastal community in Maine! The companies do all the planning. They take your luggage from place-to-place and arrange accommodations and meals. Best of all, they offer experienced, local guides who know the best places to walk and stay, as well as all the points of interest. Some trips are self-guided, in which they

When I’m asked to pick a favorite trip, it’s almost impossible. Each trip is a new experience, with unexpected insights and, yes, some not-so-fun experiences. We have had our share of scraped knees and even black eyes. Sometime a serendipity moment is the most memorable. We have stumbled on wedding ceremonies in some of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. Simple “aha” moments can be the best.

A trophy walk for many trekkers is the famous Camino, or the Way of St. James. It was one of our most memorable. Starting in Burgos, we followed the famous pilgrim path for 10 days to the holy city of Santiago de Compostela. We mixed with real pilgrims who carried everything on their backs and walked 20 to 30 miles per day, staying in hostels. Our milage was more modest, and accommodations much gentler. In 2020, Covid forced us into a time-out. Planning our first walk in two years, we selected the Lake District in England, a place we were familiar with, and a relatively short flight from the East Coast. Over the years, we have enjoyed a variety of trips in England, including the famous 182-mile Coastto-Coast Walk (across Northern England from St. Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast), Cornwall, and the Cotswolds. The Lake District was a good choice this year. It offers beautiful scenery, gentle walks, and all things English. We walked each morning, enjoyed a pub lunch, and set out again on an afternoon walk. We averaged between miles 6 to 9 miles a day, across relatively flat terrain and around lakes. Sometimes we included “culture” stops, like Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and Hilltop, the home of Beatrix Potter. We look forward to more walking adventures. Choosing and planning the trip is part of the fun. We are looking through catalogs and discussing the plusses and minuses of different places we might visit. We are very glad that travel restrictions have been eased and we are back on the trail!

The club grew quickly into 20 or more modelers and still meets on the first Saturday of every month. He is proud of his collection of sea-going vessels he has built through the years.

After a busy life that included 12 major moves, Hal Mather is happily enjoying his retirement on Amelia Island. Originally from England, Hal and his wife, Jean, found their country devastated by World War II and decided they needed to relocate.TheMathers immigrated to Canada, where Hal had a job opportunity. Describing himself as an aircraft engineer and expert in manufacturing management, he worked for the Fairey Company on-and-off in the first years of his career. Nova Scotia was the first stop for the young couple after a not very pleasant crossing from England to Halifax. Later moves would take them across the country to Victoria, British Columbia, back to Nova Scotia, and then to the United States.

A man of many interests and talents, he and his wife were accomplished ballroom dancers. Ballroom dancing was a favorite pastime of many couples all over the world, especially in Canada. The talented couple won many dancing competitions, including the Canadian National Championship. They were featured dancers on Canada’s number one television show, “Don Messer’s Jubilee,” touring in the summers. For a brief time, the couple ran a dancing school.

Mather’s talents brought needed organization to a variety of companies throughout his career. Embracing the power of computers, he was able to increase their efficiency and profitability. Sharing what he learned, he has written four books and numerous articles on manufacturing management. He was a successful consultant for many years. With retirement in 1995, Mather was able to indulge in a hobby he enjoyed as a youngster: building model ships. A model shipbuilding group was meeting in Jacksonville, but it was too far to attend regularly, so he started one on Amelia Island called the Pirate Flag Modelers. Mather approached Amelia Island Plantation and was able to get permission to sail the model boats on one of its many lakes.

His proudest creation is a built-from-scratch replica of the boat he and Jean emigrated on to Canada. It took ten years to build. It is over 9 feet long, with many features that can be operated by remote control. When the Maritime Museum was open, he volunteered there and his models were on display. Exercise is important to him. He is a dedicated walker and schedules two long walks a week. He also participates in an island Jazzercise program. His pets are all in his backyard.

He has a large group of squirrels and birds who appreciate his generosity. His love of animals is clear when you see the assortment of feeders he maintains. He even wrote a children’s book, “The Rabbit Who Loved Peanuts,” about a rabbit that he got to know by sharing peanuts. He has read his book at many Nassau County schools. A widower, Mather has one daughter, two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild, all of whom live in Canada. DICKIE BY STEVE LEIMBERG,

The first boat he built was an oceangoing tug. His second model was a World War II destroyer, a more ambitious project. Ironically, it is an exact replica of a destroyer now in downtown Jacksonville’s Northbank, where it will become home to the Jacksonville Naval Museum. The historic destroyer launched in 1945 and saw 37 years of U.S. deployments.

August has brought the heat, and with it, beautiful flowers, but with the intense heat, some blooms are tapering off. Have you thought of adding white to your garden? White flowering shrubs not only add interest to your garden, but they brighten it up and create tranquility. Many beautiful white shrubs can be incorporated into your garden, offering wonderful fragrances and cooling effects. One of my favorites is Sambac Jasmine (Arabian Jasmine), a broadleaf evergreen shrub that produces fragrant flowers from June through August. This compact beauty is the most fragrant of all Jasmines. It can grow 4 to 5 feet in height and width. Plant it in full sun to part shade. Afternoon shade is recommended to keep the dark green foliage looking its best. White Knight (Weigela Florida) is a beauty. It grows 4 to 5 feet tall, with lovely milky blossoms. One of the best white flowering bushes I know, its combination of fragrance and pure white blooms makes it unique. Clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers will show off for as long as two months, and then repeat in the fall. As White Knight matures, the branches arch to the ground, creating an awesome display of white. Use it as a hedge or specimen. Of course, my favorite flower is a white flowering shrub: the Foolproof Gardenia. This PP shrub has an upright, compact growth habit, reaching 3 to 4 feet in height and 3 feet in width. The double pure-white fragrant blooms appear in late spring and re-bloom through the fall. Plant it in full to partial shade. (My Foolproof gets only early morning sun and then shade during the heat of the day, thriving in its large planter pot.) This easy-care evergreen is disease-resistant and heat-tolerant with year-round interest. Use it as an accent, border, mass planting, or in containers. Night Blooming Jasmine (Cestrum Nocturnum) is famous for its gorgeous fragrant flowers that open at night and reveal what is known as the strongest scent from a plant in the entire world. If you have this plant or are going to add it to your garden, expect it to overflow with fragrance all the time. It likes an east or west position. This fast-growing woody shrub gets its name from the tubular white flowers that emit the highly fragrant scent, but this plant is not a true Jasmine. It only blooms at night because the flower-generating hormone (florigen) migrates from the leaves to flowering shoots during the day. It accumulates in the flowering shoots of the plant and induces flowering during the night. Night Blooming can grow 8 to 10 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Its evergreen nature and tall, columnar habit make excellent for privacy hedges and screens. When the flowers fade, white berries form and attract a variety of birds to the garden. If you have a chat with neighbors on Amelia Island, you will discover a distinct similarity to many of the stories about how people ended up here. Once you experience Amelia Island, you always want more! Angie and Steve Jones, who have called the island home for just over a year, will tell you the very same. After marrying, the couple lived in London for a few years for Steve’s work before relocating to the Gainesville/Lake City area in the early 2000’s. “Over the years, we visited Amelia Island for

It wasn’t long before the couple and their two sons, Steven and Wesley, were spending long weekends at the Omni Amelia Island Resort, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and in private rentals. “We would daydream about retiring here one day,” laughsLikeAngie.somany, in 2020 Steve and Angie realized that life and work was changing, and that Steve’s work life was shifting as Zoom meetings unleashed the potential for more flexible schedules. This, coupled with their youngest son leaving for college, prompted Steve and Angie to start looking at real estate on Amelia Island.

“We were both excited and eager to get to Amelia and were thrilled to meet Ted and Sandy Kotich of KDI Homes.” KDI Homes built several spec homes, and the Jones’ purchased his very last build at Omni Amelia Island Resort before he retired. As soon as the couple signed the contract on their home, they contacted a designer to partner for the design and build process. “We met Tiffany Hinton and Kelli Anderson at Lola Interiors, and we love them both,” the couple says. “Our only regrets are the couple of details where we went on our own and ignored their advice!”

Amelia Island Coffee is a coffee shop first, and Ray is proud of his beans, fresh-roasted in Yulee, which are specifically highmountain, cold-climate, hand-picked 100% arabica beans. He has flavors for a wide array of specialty drinks, too. Two of those flavors are syrups made in-house, vanilla and lavender, with the lavender sourced from the lavender shop across the street. And how the lavender popped in the Honey Lavender Oat Milk Latte! Everything about the Vanilla Sweet Cream Full-Foam Cold Brew made it one of my favorites. The Iced Chai Latte, rich with spices, was another favorite.

The baristas are professionals, who years ago sought out this particular coffee shop to use their serious skills. Customers need not know exactly what they want, for part of the barista magic is listening in order to figure out what will work. It’s theirThjob.ose who come for the housemade breakfast are in luck. House-made savory items include Southwest Omelet Wrap with salsa or bacon, egg, and cheese on a very fluffy biscuit. Paige has been planning innovations, so look for a new menu of avocado toasts soon. An island baker produces AIC’s confections. We had a Sopapilla Cheesecake Bar that was a fine balance of each. On the wall are original artworks from Blue Door Artists, the art studio next door. Lavender, coffee beans, sweets, art—what more could you ask for?“All are welcome, and we will make them feel welcome,” says Ray. He’s gotten to know his regulars since he took over late last year, and he knows when to expect them. One group of retirees has been meeting every morning for years. Church ladies convene periodically. Students come after school and do homework. And tourists from all over the world. For a wide variety of people, this is their coffee shop –some for life, others as part of their vacation, just like Ray when he was young. Amelia Island Coffee is located at 207 Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach.

When Sherry Carter and I met at Amelia Island Coffee to talk with owner Ray Carter and taste the wares, little did we know we would discover that we were distant cousins! Amelia Island Coffee is the kind of place where many people have connected and found community through the years. How the three of us enjoyed reminiscing about and sharing our own memories of the coffee shop and downtown Fernandina! Like many of us who live here now, Ray, originally from Waycross, Georgia, vacationed here all his life. He and his wife, Paige, take seriously their responsibility to care for the food, people, and ambience that have made AIC such a beloved community gathering place. While it has been this coffee shop since 1995, during the previous 130 years, this space was a pharmacy and soda fountain. You can feel the continuity! As they settle in, Ray and Paige are making the shop their own. Their new logo image is circular, with water and sunrise framing a golden coffee bean, portraying the elements of the shop coming together into circles of community and life. Look for the new menu to be rolling out very soon. And the new tagline is The Local Grind, emphasizing that many of their ingredients and foods are sourced locally.

Summer is here and it’s our favorite season for entertaining! The grill is on, and we’re ready to hang out with our neighbors and friends. Our summer bar is set up, too, with lots of yummy ingredients to make our favorite hot weatherSummercocktails.cocktails should be light, chilled, and refreshing, served with lots of ice, fruit, and garden herbs. Unlike heavier winter drinks like Manhattans, Mulled Wine, and Hot Toddys, our summer drinks are bursting with seasonal delights like watermelon, mint, and citrus. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite drinks— just make them icy and refreshing! For instance, if you’re fond of Negronis, consider making a pitcher of frozen Negronis using the same ingredients of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, all iced up and whirred in a blender. If you’re fond of Sangria, consider a pitcher of White Sangria, which is lighter and less sweet than Red Sangria. Add a lot of fruit and make it even more refreshing. Have you tried a Watermelon Margarita yet? Watermelon helps you stay hydrated, which is a good thing when the weather is warm.Asbourbon is still king, you might want to offer up some lighter bourbon drinks, like a Bourbon Arnold Palmer made with lemonade and iced tea, or a Kentucky Buck, made with ginger beer, lemon juice, and bitters. To keep your guests from imbibing too much in the Florida heat, be sure to provide water or club soda over ice in between refills (it really works!) and offer plenty of nonalcoholic beverages, too, along with lots of hors d’oeuvres to keep your guests’ tummies full. The recipes that follow include some of our favorite summer cocktails. Please drink responsibly and enjoy the summer season!

BOURBON ARNOLD PALMER For each drink, ﬁll a tall glass with ice. Add 1 ½ oz bourbon, then equal amounts of lemonade and iced tea. Garnish with lemons and mint sprigs.

For each drink, place 2 oz. gin, ¾ oz. Campari, ¾ oz. sweet vermouth, a pinch of salt, and 3-drops grapefruit bitters in a blender. Add a handful of ice, and blend. Pour into a rocks glass and garnish with grapefruit and orange peels.

KENTUCKY BUCK In a shaker, muddle 3-hulled strawberries. Next add 2 oz. bourbon, ½ oz. lemon juice, and a dash of Angostura bitters. Shake well. Fill a tall glass with ice, then pour contents of shaker into the glass. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a strawberry and lemon slice.

WHITE SANGRIA In a large pitcher, place 1-750 ml. bottle of dry white wine, ½ cup fruit ﬂavored liqueur, 1 cup white grape juice, 3 cups berries, 1 large peach, sliced, and 1 lime, sliced. Chill in refrigerator until ready to serve. (Note: if you prefer a lighter Sangria, add some chilled club soda right before serving.)

WATERMELON MARGARITA In a large blender, combine 4-cups frozen watermelon cubes, ½ cup tequila, ¼ cup triple sec, 1/3 cup lime juice, 1/3 cup lime juice, and 2 Tbs. agave syrup. Add 1 cup ice to blender and whir until combined. Serve in glasses rimmed with margarita salt and lime slices.
