FOREWORD
5
Once again, we pull back the curtains and introduce a cohort of design professionals graduating from the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS). This catalog is issued in association with the eighth edition of Six Degrees: an exhibition of work by these soon-to-be alumni. Each student featured in here has chosen the work to be included.
Dean of College of Architecture, Art & Design
As I write each year, the transformation we have witnessed is extraordinary. Our students have been on quite a journey that involved adapting to radically different ways of learning and thinking. Along the way, they acquired knowledge, skills, and sensibilities and honed these through application and critical feedback; they have built strong bonds of friendship. My faculty colleagues have played a vital role in this transformation. They engage in extended conversations with students about their intentions and how these intentions are manifested. The best of them relentlessly challenge, inspire, and push their students. These interactions leave a lasting impression and we must recognize and honor this contribution. A noteworthy highlight: this year’s show includes work from a studio section sponsored by Ithra Dubai, a developer and manager of real estate assets wholly owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai. I believe the work indicates the potential that such partnerships can unleash and I look forward to continuing this professional collaboration. I am grateful for Ithra’s support. This catalog and exhibition is the result of the investment of considerable time and effort by key individuals. The leaders of CAAD’s student organizations—Sara Helaweh, Uthra Varghese, Mohammed Hamade, Sari Al Taher, Rima Chalha, Priyanka Soni—helped plan for and organize the show. The faculty advisers to these organizations—Faysal Tabbarah, Riem Ibrahim, and Juan Roldan—and Associate Dean Zinka Bejtic and MUP Coordinator Rafael Pizarro devoted considerable time. Savio Creado, Assistant to the Dean, provided valuable support. I also thank Sumeyye Gmeiner for contributing her time and talents to coordinating a diverse set of actors and stakeholders. A longstanding member of the CAAD faculty is leaving at the end of this year. Mark Pilkington has taught photography to many cohorts of students and has served the institution in administrative capacities. I thank Professor Pilkington for his contributions to the institution. We are once again fortunate this year that the Dubai Design District (d3) is hosting the show. Our partnership with this prestigious design organization helps promote local talent in general and our students’ accomplishments in particular. In closing, congratulations to our graduating students. I look forward to hearing of your successes in the future as leaders in the design and allied professions.

A spiral growth, incorporating thick and thin strands allowed inhabitation of circulation and living spaces. The core was created a digital inflation technique.

2. San Francisco Music Hall ARC 401, Professor George Newlands The main strategy was to form a landmark within a landmark. Golden Gate park’s linear stretch is mimicked in the design, making music a journey. There were two things that integrated the aesthetics of the building: the forts and hills of San Francisco. Another major idea was to indulge and blend in within the park.

The One Community UPL682, Professor Rafael Pizarro The project uses the concept of ‘urban acupuncture’ to bring back to life derelict sites within the Al Nasseriya Neighborhood in Sharjah. A neighborhood mixed-use center, public majlis, recycling/remanufacturing areas, pocket parks, and a variety of new public community facilities connected through a network of car-free pedestrian pathways re-establish Al Nasseriya as a valuable culturally diverse Sharjah area.

Al Ain Civic Center Revitalization Plan UPL682, Professor Rafael Pizarro Al Ain Civic Center is currently a lifeless patchwork of scattered government buildings amidst deserted parking and vacant lots. The project is an infill development mixing the government buildings with green areas, museums, movie theaters, an open-air amphitheater, an arts boulevard, and mid-rise mid-density residential buildings. The project effectively creates a second thriving civic and cultural center for Al Ain.

More than half of the responses are passive at best, and reproachful at worst. After taking samples of the responses, we have built an enclosed space composed entirely out of these words. I chose to work with distortion and separation of the form, which led me to use graphite as a medium. The process is translated into a poster format.
2. Lecture Series Poster VIS 331, Professor Riem Ibrahim Large-format, typographic poster to advertise Harvard School of Design 2015 Architecture Lecture Series. After analysis of the text, visually differentiating the data set to translate the different levels of hierarchy, sequence and meaning. Experimenting with imaginative ways to organize and elevate the data by exploring structural approaches befitting the theme.

1. Escapism VIS 325, Professor Mark Pilkington Through this portrait I depicted the fear in a woman’s eyes while hiding the rest of her body. This portrait attempts to capture how an intense look can communicate an emotional state, and how one frequently uses eye expression to hide from reality.

2. Self-Portrait VIS 325, Professor Mark Pilkington The photographs attempt to capture the language of eyes and how they often reflect the inner soul along with one’s unexpressed feelings.

1. Making Meaning VIS 405, Professor Pascal Zoghbi The poster and archive were designed to draw attention to the laws of the Lebanese Republic that are supposed to protect women but in reality, do not. The text, phrases, and newspaper cutouts were all taken from the Lebanese law, constitution, and the news.
2. Portrait VIS 325, Professor Mark Pilkington The intent of this photograph is to show the male dominance over women. One of the main design principles in focus is hierarchy; the positioning of the male and the female subjects in the photograph show the different sides of being in an unhealthy relationship. This photograph was shortlisted for the Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award in 2016.

1. Trends VIS 405, Professor Pascal Zoghbi Trends are set in a constant shift between conformity and rebellion. Look at what is trending today and you will find a link to the past. When looking at the bigger picture, we observe the emergence of a pattern. The poster and archive explore this apparent trend in trends in a witty and humorous way.
2. Editorial Illustration VIS 312, Professor Phil Sheil These illustrations were created to accompany an article about an exhibition of Michelangelo’s sketches and drawings. About half a dozen illustration were completed, some with a “non-finito” look, which Michelangelo was known for.

Discarded Voices VIS 405, Professor Pascal Zoghbi Humanity has gone through many years of successful economic development, however this progression has one constant throughout the generations; the degradation of human rights. The lack of application of the 1984 U.N. declaration of human rights continues to raise the number of casualties in our societies. The longer we regress upon each other the more we lose our humanity.
