MEN’S SOCCER

Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence.

As The American embarks on its first year, there is a new era that begins. But the new branding will be able to draw on the rich tradition that already exists among the nine soccer programs this year.

With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 2013 – its debut season – consists of 10 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Louisville, the University of Memphis, Rutgers University, Southern Methodist University, the University of South Florida and Temple University. All but Houston sponsor men’s soccer, making 2013-14 a nine-member league for the sport.

In 2014-15, East Carolina University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa come aboard. The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only.

The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, will immediately take a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with schools that have played in a combined five Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won eight NCAA women’s basketball championships since 1995.

The 2013 season will mark the final year of a six-year arrangement with ESPN that gives The American national exposure on ABC television and the ESPN family of networks. ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC will carry a minimum of 19 American home football games each season. Championship Week in December includes three American games on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. At least four American games are featured on ESPN’s Thursday-night package.

In addition, ESPN Regional Television will continue to produce and distribute its Game of the Week package to a nationally syndicated audience, reaching more than 30 million homes. Most of these games also will be available as part of the ESPN GamePlan subscription service. Finally, a minimum of five home games will be carried on ESPNU.

Three schools competed in the NCAA Championship last year, with Connecticut, Louisville and USF all winning their first round games before both the Huskies and Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinals.

Five of the nine schools that make up the league this year finished 2012 in the top-35 RPI. With a challenging scheduling strategy and elite programs, that number is almost destined to increase in the coming years.

The season will be spent battling for the opportunity to compete in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. The Conference didn’t waste any time securing a top-notch, elite facility for the prestigious event, as FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas, will serve as the first host. The No. 8 and No. 9 seeds will compete in a play-in game at a campus site on Nov. 8 and quarterfinals will be played at campus sites on Nov. 9.

The semifinals will be held on Nov. 15, with the final on Nov. 17.

MICHAEL L. ARESCO

Mike Aresco, one of the most influential leaders in sports television and collegiate sports, was named Commissioner of the Big East Conference on August 14, 2012, and has overseen the successful rebranding of the league as the American Athletic Conference.

In his first year as commissioner, Aresco has overseen a strategic reinvention of the Conference which will keep The American at the forefront of Division I college athletics. By the 2015-16 academic year, the American Athletic Conference will include 11 all-sports members and Navy as a football-playing member. The Conference will launch a football championship game for the first time in 2015 and is the first league to explore staging its own postseason bowl game.

Aresco’s first months were marked by his successful efforts to ensure the Conference’s place within the College Football Playoff – the new system that will determine the national champion, beginning in 2014. Aresco was instrumental in securing the arrangement that will put the American Athletic Conference champion in a New Year’s Day system bowl if it is the highestranked team among the champions of five conferences.

In the wake of the changes created by college sports realignment, Aresco moved quickly to solidify the conference, leading negotiations that resulted in the most favorable financial terms for the conference’s football schools, after the withdrawal of the non-football-playing schools, who were referred to unofficially as the Catholic 7.

He simultaneously led the negotiations that resulted in television contracts with ESPN and CBS Sports, which will give the American Athletic Conference unprecedented national exposure with the two industry leaders in sports television.

Aresco then quickly and successfully organized the process whereby the conference was renamed the American Athletic Conference – a name that was immediately accepted in the college landscape – and he also oversaw the process that resulted in the new conference’s popular graphic identity.

He has also successfully worked with the conference schools to arrive at an equitable

distribution of existing revenue for the current and new conference institutions, bringing about a period of cohesiveness that is unprecedented in the league’s history. He has restructured the conference office staff to maximize efficiency and better serve the needs of the membership.

Among his other significant accomplishments on behalf of the American Athletic Conference was the spearheading of expansion efforts, which resulted in the addition of Tulane University and the University of Tulsa and the transition to membership in all sports for East Carolina University, which was originally admitted to the league for football only; the planning for a conference digital network; successful negotiations for the 2014 men’s and women’s basketball championships at FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., and Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., respectively; and the launching of a brand marketing campaign.

He is currently working on the conference’s future bowl lineup.

Aresco came to the conference from CBS Sports where he was Executive Vice President, Programming. He was responsible for all college sports programming for CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network. Aresco oversaw the acquisition and management of CBS Sports college properties, including the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, regular-season college basketball and football, conference basketball championship games, football bowl games and other programming. His responsibilities included game selection and scheduling, day-to-day operations, contract negotiations, identification of future acquisitions, development of programming strategies and coordination of new media and marketing initiatives.

Aresco played an integral role in the landmark deal that created the CBS SportsTurner Broadcasting partnership, which resulted in the acquisition of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship rights through 2024. He managed the complex 14-year agreement that provides expanded national broadcast and cable coverage of the NCAA basketball championship. Aresco also was instrumental in the CBS Television Network’s groundbreaking bundled rights agreement with the NCAA which granted CBS exclusive rights to the NCAA Tournament from 2003 through 2010. The 2010 NCAA Championship won a Sports Emmy in the Outstanding Playoff Coverage category. Aresco also played a key role in negotiating NCAA marketing agreements and in creating a partnership with IMG and the NCAA to assist in acquiring new NCAA corporate sponsors. He also was a significant contributor in the development of new media platforms for the NCAA Championship, including March Madness on Demand, a

highly successful streaming platform.

In 2008, Aresco negotiated a historic 15-year agreement with the Southeastern Conference to televise the league’s football and basketball games. The agreement also provided multiple new media rights for CBS, CBS Sports Network and CBS Interactive. He forged numerous basketball agreements with major conferences, including the Big East, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big 12. Aresco recently negotiated 10-year extensions of the Army-Navy and Notre Dame-Navy football rivalries.

Aresco was the creator and executive producer of The Tony Barnhart Show, the critically- acclaimed college football show, as well as Courtside with Seth Davis, a highly-regarded weekly show devoted to college basketball, both of which air on the CBS Sports Network.

In 2004, he was appointed by the late NCAA President Myles Brand to the Basketball Partnership, a select panel whose mission was to explore ways to improve and promote college basketball. He is a charter member of the steering committee of the Columbia University/New York City Chapter of the National Football Foundation and serves on the board of the National Sports Marketing Network.

Aresco joined CBS Sports from ESPN where he was responsible for overseeing the acquisition, scheduling and development of long-term strategies for all ESPN college sports properties. Earlier in his tenure at ESPN, he was responsible for programming a wide variety of sports properties, including College Football Association, Big 10, and Pac-10 college football, NCAA events, including early rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament, the College World Series and various professional sports events, including thoroughbred racing, Top Rank Boxing, CFL football, Australian Rules Football, rodeo and yachting. He was the architect of ESPN’s signature Thursday night college football series and helped develop ESPN’s Bowl Week. He joined ESPN in 1984 as Counsel and was named Assistant General Counsel in 1988 before moving to the programming department.

Aresco is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Tufts University (B.A., magna cum laude, history), the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts (M.A., international relations), where he held a John Moors Cabot Scholarship, and the University of Connecticut Law School (J.D.). He practiced law privately in Hartford, Conn., for several years.

Aresco and his wife, Sharon, have two adult sons, Matthew, an Emmy-nominated television producer who owns a production company in Connecticut, and Brett, an aspiring actor who lives in New York City.

F C DA LLAS 2013 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced that the 2013 American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship will be played at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Nov. 15 and 17. The No. 8 and No. 9 seeds will have a play-in game at a campus site on Nov. 8 and the quarterfinals will be played on campus sites on Nov. 9.

“As we celebrate this inaugural year of the American Athletic Conference, FC Dallas Stadium is a perfect venue to host our first men’s soccer championship,” said Aresco. “We are delighted to partner with FC Dallas to provide our coaches, student-athletes and fans with a wonderful experience at the championship level of their sport.”

Opened on Aug. 6, 2005, FC Dallas Stadium is a 145-acre multipurpose sports and entertainment facility located at the intersection of Main Street and Dallas North Tollway in Frisco, Texas, and is the home stadium for FC Dallas. The combination of a world-class stadium and a sports park make FC Dallas Stadium one of the best and most unique soccer facilities in the world.

Included in the facility are the 20,500 state-of-the-art pro soccer stadium and 17 tournament-sized fields.

The facility has proven to be one of the top venues in the United States for both professional and amateur soccer. The complex, which includes 17 tournament-grade fields used for youth and adult soccer, as well as high school sports and other events, has drawn over 1 million visitors each year since opening. The $105 million public-private complex is owned by the City of Frisco in partnership with Hunt Sports Group (HSG), the Frisco Independent School District, and Collin County.

“As an SMU alumnus, I’m especially excited to bring the American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship to FC Dallas Stadium,” said Hunt Sports Group Vice President Dan Hunt. “We have more than 4,500 players in our youth system, ages 7 and up, while more than 80 earned college soccer scholarships or Financial Aid this past year alone. Our Development Academy consistently ranks among the best in North America, while our professional team has spent the majority of the 2013 season at the top of the table in MLS. We are committed to growing soccer in North Texas and look forward to showcasing yet another level of elite play at our stadium.”

The 2013 NCAA Championship marks the 55th anniversary of the tournament. First, second and third round games, as well as the quarterfinals, are held on the campuses of participating institutions in a single-elimination format.

The College Cup, which includes the national semifinals and championship, will be hosted by Villanova University. It will be held at PPL Park Park in Chester, Pa., on Dec. 13 and 15.

K NI G HT S K nigh ts No tebook • The 2012 UCF campaign was filled with plenty of highlights for the Knights, who went 5-3 in league play. During the regular season, UCF faced a challenging schedule with matches against four ranked opponents. The Knights picked up a huge C-USA victory in mid-October when they topped No. 17 SMU 1-0 in Orlando.

• UCF earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament with a pair of road victories to close out the regular season. The Knights fell in the Conference USA Championship quarterfinals at Regions Park to host UAB. • The Knights are looking to return to the NCAA Championship after a one-year hiatus. Head coach Bryan Cunningham’s squad advanced to the second round of the championship in both 2011 and 2010.

• Senior Omar Vallejo returns to lead the UCF attack. The senior forward scored three goals and led the team with eight assists in 2012. Vallejo, who was in his first year at UCF after transferring from Ohio State, tied for first in Conference USA in assists per game (0.44).

Blake led UConn to a 17-4-1 record based on a 0.54 goals against average and an .840 save percentage. On the year, he recorded 11 shutouts, giving him 26 in 47 career games. The reigning two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Blake has earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team in back-to-back seasons. His goals against average ranked third in the nation.

• In two years at UConn, Blake sits eighth all-time in wins (36), third in consecutive starts (47), second in lowest goals against average (0.46) and seventh in shutouts (26).

• Junior forward Mamadou Doudou Diouf was a first-time All-American, named to the second team. Diouf ranked second in the BIG EAST Conference and sixth in the NCAA with 15 goals scored. Diouf added two assists for 32 points. A 2012 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, he was previously named 2012 Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. Diouf was a member of the 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team and was selected to the 2010 All-BIG EAST R ookie Team.

• Senior defender Andrew Farrell named a First Team NSCAA AllAmerican. He was named MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and All-BIG EAST First Team unanimous selection in 2012 after anchoring a defense that was tied for first in the conference allowing 0.62 goals per game in league play. He finished the year tied for third on the team with four goals and nine points.

• Louisville posted a 7-1 BIG EAST record, winning the Red Division.

• The incoming class of Andrew Brody, Romilio Hernandez, Jeremy and Michael DeGraffenreidt was ranked No. 11 by Top Drawer Soccer, giving head coach Ken Lolla and his staff their highest ranked recruiting class in school history.

• In addition to the newcomers, six transfers enrolled at UofL last spring.

Ricky DiPasquale (Roberts Wesleyan), Mitch Lurie (Portland), Derek McCaffrey (Boston University), Nolan Moore (Cal Poly), James Ockford (Mount St. Mary’s) and John Strong (Virginia Tech) have all joined the team.

Sherrod was the first player to win the award in back-to-back season in the conference’s history and the only player in the school’s history to win the award twice. Sherrod finished the 2012 season with 12 goals, four asissts and 28 points. He also earned All-C-USA and NSCAA All-Midwest Region first team honors, was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List and was a finalist for the Soccer News College Boot award.

• The 2013 will be a milestone year as the team looks for its 300th win all-time. Coming into the 2013 campaign Memphis carries an all-time record of 297-245-54.

• With Memphis’ move toThe American, theTigers will renew old rivalries with Cincinnati and Louisville. The match with the Bearcats on Sept. 21 marks the fourth different conference in which Memphis and Cincinnati will have met as league opponents (Metro Conference, Great Midwest Conference, C-USA and The American). When the Tigers take the pitch with Louisville on Sept. 23, it will mark the third different conference in which the two have met as league opponents (Metro Conference, C-USA, American).

SCARLET KNIGHTS S car let K n i gh ts Not e bo ok • Sophomore midfielder Mael Corboz earned Second Team AllBIG EAST and All-Rookie honors last year in his rookie campaign after finishing the season as the second leading scorer with three goals and a team-leading seven assists. His seven assists in 2012 are the most by a Scarlet Knight in a season since 2001 and also placed him in a tie for 17th all-time in the single season chart.

Corboz ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in assists (7) and fourth in assists per game (0.47).

• Senior forward Kene Eze was nammed Second Team All-BIG EAST after leading the Scarlet Knight with eight goals, including four gamewinners, and 17 points. He was was among the BIG EAST leaders in game-winning goals and tied for 10th in the BIG EAST in points (17) and goals, while ranking seventh in the league in points per game (1.13) and fifth in goals per game (0.53).

• The Scarlet Knights will be a youthful squad featuring only two seniors and two juniors along with 10 sophomores and 10 freshmen, including six newcomers.

•This year’s schedule features six opponents from the 2012 NCAA tournament.

Elite Soccer News Network’sTravis Clark took a look at some of the nation’s best defenders and placed Sweat in his top 10 earlier this month. Sweat has totaled 12 points in 53 games the past three seasons and helped the Bulls post six shutouts in 2012 while scoring two game-winning goals.

• The 2012 senior class had been to four straight NCAA tournaments, made it to two Elite Eights and won the 2011 BIG EAST Red Division title.

• USF ended up No. 25 in the RPI and the Bulls found a way to reach eight wins with an injury-ridden squad.

• During head coach George Kiefer’s 11 seasons at the helm, the Bulls have reached the NCAA Tournament seven times, including each of the past six seasons. He has also led the program to two of its three Elite Eight appearances in 2008 and 2011. Kiefer led the team to a pair of BIG EAST Red DivisionTitles in 2005 and 2011 as well as a Big EastTournament Title in 2008.

Martinelli scored 28 points in 2012, ranking third in the nation for most points by a freshman. Martinelli needed just one goal to become TU’s first-ever 10-goal/10-assist scorer in a season.

• Head coach David MacWilliams enters the 2013 season one victory away from career win No. 100. He will become Temple’s fourth head coach to reach the milestone.

• The Owls lose midfielder Cody Calafiore, who was second on the team with 14 points last year and defender Billy Kappock, who played in every single game during his four-year career and closed out his time as Temple’s all-time leader in consecutive games started with 75.
