AMERICAN ATHLETIC C O NF ERE NCE The American Athletic Conference consists of 12 prestigious institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the U.S. Naval Academy (in football only), the University of South Florida Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa. Under the leadership of commissioner Mike Aresco, the American Athletic Conference has written an impressive list of accomplishments, both in the competitive arena and the classroom. In the course of its first three seasons, The American has taken its place at the forefront of intercollegiate athletics, with a collection of national team and individual championships and football and men’s and women’s basketball postseason victories that place The American among the elite Division I FBS conferences. The league has produced four NCAA championship teams – UConn men’s basketball in 2014 and UConn women’s basketball in 2014, 2015 and 2016 – two New Year’s Six bowl champions, and two individuals who have won NCAA titles, most recently SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau, who was the 2015 national champion in men’s golf. Additionally, American Athletic Conference teams have advanced to the College World Series, reached the semifinal and final rounds of the NIT, qualified for the match play round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship and registered a top-10 finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The American Athletic Conference was one of six finalists for the 2016 Sports Business Journal Sports League of the Year award, along with Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, NASCAR, the National Basketball Association and the PGA Tour. The American was the only entity from college athletics to be so honored.

Additionally, SMU’s Avery Acker was chosen as the Division I women’s volleyball Academic All-America of the Year in 2015, while Navy offensive guard E.K. Binns was one of 12 finalists nationally for the Campbell Trophy, which is presented by the National Football Foundation to the top scholar-athlete in college football. Tulsa soccer standout Katy Riojas was the winner of the 2016 NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, while Golden Hurricane rower Emalia Seto won the 2016 NCAA Jim McKay Scholarship. Two student-athletes from The American earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships in the conference’s first three years. The American Athletic Conference holds media rights partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which provide the conference with outstanding national exposure on the two industry leaders in sports television. The football portion of the contract calls for nearly 90 percent of conference-controlled games on national broadcast or national cable platforms. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which was played in 2015, was televised by ABC as part of Championship Saturday. The American Athletic Conference serves its membership from a stateof-the-art office located in Providence, R.I. The location of the conference headquarters – just steps from the city’s Amtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green International Airport – gives the conference easy access to its member schools. The conference headquarters is equipped with a complete video production studio, which serves as the home of The American Digital Network, and meeting rooms to accommodate the many coaches’ and administrators’ meetings held on-site each year.

In football, three American Athletic Conference teams were in the final College Football Playoff rankings of 2015, while two teams from The American were ranked in the top 20 of the final national polls in both 2013 and 2015. Eight of The American’s 12 football teams played in bowl games to cap the 2015 season as Houston defeated Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and Navy beat Pittsburgh in the Military Bowl. Houston’s finish at No. 8 nationally gave The American a top-10 team in the final national polls for the second time in the league’s three seasons. UCF finished No. 10 in the 2013 rankings after the Knights’ Fiesta Bowl win against Baylor. In 2014, The American had the best men’s basketball postseason record of any league, when conference teams were a combined 13-4, and the league sent four teams to the 2016 NCAA Championship. Teams from The American have registered top-10 national rankings in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s soccer, men’s golf, and men’s track and field. Individual teams in The American have enjoyed unprecedented success since the conference’s formation. Houston went 13-1 in the 2015 football season, setting a school record for wins, while Navy won a program-record 11 games in its first season in the conference, also in 2015. The 2014 season saw Memphis finish with 10 wins in football for the first time since 1938, while Temple enjoyed its first 10-win season in 2015. American Athletic Conference student-athletes have distinguished themselves in all facets of intercollegiate athletics. Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich won the Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player in 2015, while Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. UConn basketball standout Breanna Stewart finished her career as the most decorated player in college basketball history as she was chosen as the consensus national player of the year for the third time and became the first player be named four times as the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four. Reynolds and Stewart were selected as the winners of the 2016 AAU James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athletes, marking only the second time in the 86-year history of the award that multiple winners were chosen.

@american_WSoc Mike Aresco has established himself as one of the leading figures in intercollegiate sports as commissioner of the American Athletic Conference. Aresco, who was named to his current position Aug. 14, 2012, has overseen a strategic reinvention of the conference, which has quickly become one of the premier conferences in the nation. Conference teams have won four NCAA Championships and two New Year’s Six bowl games since the 2012-13 academic year. The American’s inaugural year produced a remarkable string of accomplishments as UCF won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press poll. UConn won NCAA titles in both men’s and women’s basketball as American Athletic Conference teams had the best postseason winning percentage of any conference in men’s basketball. The league sent four teams to the NCAA tournament and saw SMU advance to the championship game of the NIT. The American was the only conference to have a Bowl Championship Series win and teams in the Men’s Final Four, the Women’s Final Four and the College World Series in 2013-14. Teams from the conference finished in the national top 10 in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, baseball and men’s golf. More recently, The American produced three teams in the final College Football Playoff poll of 2015, including Houston, which defeated Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and finished No. 8 in the final national rankings with a 13-1 record. Navy, in its first year as a member of the conference, finished No. 18 nationally after a schoolrecord 11 wins in 2015. UConn went on to win its fourth straight NCAA title in women’s basketball, while The American sent four teams to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Among the milestones reached in Aresco’s tenure have been the announcement of a conference football championship game for the first time in 2015 and the league’s successful staging of its own postseason bowl game, the Miami Beach Bowl, in 2014. In the wake of the changes created by college sports realignment, Aresco moved quickly to solidify the conference, leading negotiations that resulted in the most favorable financial terms for the conference’s football schools, after the withdrawal of the non-footballplaying schools, as well as the 2013-14 launch of the renamed and rebranded conference.

m iC H A E L L. A RE S C O C o m m issi on er Additionally, Aresco brokered a multi-year marketing rights agreement with IMG College, the industry leader in collegiate sports marketing, and oversaw the development of The American’s new football bowl lineup, which features numerous annual matchups against the nation’s other top conferences. Included in that lineup is the Miami Beach Bowl – a bowl game that is owned and operated by the American Athletic Conference in a first-of-its-kind venture.

Aresco’s first months were marked by his successful efforts to ensure the conference’s place within the College Football Playoff. Aresco was instrumental in securing the arrangement that puts the American Athletic Conference champion in a New Year’s Day system bowl if it is the highest-ranked team among the champions of five conferences. Aresco has played an active role in the formation of the College Football Playoff, serving on the College Football Playoff Management Committee and helping to select the 13 members of the CFP Selection Committee. Aresco also serves on the College Football Playoff Television and Site Selection committees. In basketball, Aresco has secured the conference’s participation in The Men’s Basketball Officiating Consortium, L.L.C., partnering with the Big 12 Conference, Conference USA, the Ohio Valley Conference and the Southland Conference to ensure that the highest-quality game officials are assigned to American Athletic Conference contests.

Aresco is a member of the Conference Commissioners Association enforcement working group and women’s basketball working group. He serves on the board of managers for both College Football Officiating, LLC, and Men’s College Basketball, LLC. He is also a member of the FBS commissioners’ media subcommittee. 2016 Championship

@american_WSoc

The 2016 American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship will be decided at the home of the number one overall seed. First round matches will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 2, followed by the semifinals on Friday Nov. 4, and the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 6. In 2013, top-seed UCF downed Rutgers in penalty kicks to capture The American’s automatic qualifier. The final and both semifinals were scoreless draws decided in penalty kicks. The weekend produced three teams in the NCAA Championship, as UCF and Rutgers were joined by Louisville in the field of 64. In 2014, No. 4 seed UConn upset the 2014 regular-season champion and top-seeded UCF in the semifinals, 1-0. The Huskies proceeded to advance past No. 3 seed USF in the final, 3-2 in penalty kicks, after a scoreless draw to claim The American tournament championship. For the second consecutive year, three American Athletic Conference teams extended their seasons to play in the NCAA tournament. UCF, UConn and USF all earned bids to the NCAA College Cup, with UCF advancing to the third round before being eliminated by the eventual national champion, Florida State. Cincinnati took the Lone Star State by storm in the 2015 championship. The Bearcats won an overtime thriller against against the regular season champions, the UConn Huskies 3-2 to advance to the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed USF Bulls defeated the UCF Knights 1-0 in a double overtime feat. In the championship match, Cincinnati upset USF on penalty kicks as the Bearcats won 4-2. A conference record four teams extended their season as they played in the 2015 Women’s College Cup. UConn, Cincinnati, UCF, and USF all earned bids to the NCAA tournament with UConn advancing to the third round before being eliminated by Rutgers.

Notebook • UCF brings back the American’s reigning Co-Offensive Player of the Year: Carol Rodrigues. The Brazilian forward was the conference’s leading point and goal scorer in conference-only matches last year. She is most well-known for her SportsCenter Top 10 bicycle kick against Tulsa last year. • UCF’s roster features 11 returning players who clocked time in at least 10 matches last year. Among those returners are allconference honorees Rodrigues (first team), Kayla Adamek (first team) and Vera Varis (rookie team; all-tournament team). • UCF appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time last season. The Knights own an active stretch of nine-straight berths, making UCF one of 11 teams in the country to boast such a streak. • Head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak, a two-time American Coach of the Year, enters her fourth season at the helm one win away from her 100th career victory.

• The Bearcats are coming off a season in which they won their first conference title, made their first NCAA appearance and won their most matches in a season since 2002 • UC is seeking to reach the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, which would mark just the second time in program history that the Bearcats would participate in the national tournament in back-to-back seasons (2001-02) • Following back-to-back double-digit victory totals, Neil Stafford has accumulated 31 wins in his first three seasons at the helm of the program, the most in an opening three-year stretch for any coach in the program’s history • The Bearcats played 11 matches at home last year, posting a 7-2-2 mark at Gettler Stadium. In those matches, UC outscored its opponents, 16-6, and held the visitors scoreless in eight of those matches, including a 1-0 upset of #18 USF

• Three of UConn’s top players in 2015 are returning to the pitch this season as seniors, including Rachel Hill, American Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Stephanie Ribeiro, Midfielder of the Year, and Emily Armstrong, Goalkeeper of the Year. Hill and Ribeiro were both 2015 NSCAA All-American honorees. • The Huskies are led by 36-year head coach and 2015 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Len Tsantiris. After celebrating his 35th season in 2015, Tsantiris guided the Huskies to their 30th NCAA appearance, where they advanced to the third round. He is looking for his 550th career win this season, as his career record is currently 544-189-55. • UConn welcomes 13 newcomers, all freshman, to the squad for the 2016 season, including three forwards, five midfielders, three defensemen and two goalkeepers.

Notebook • East Carolina returns six starters and 14 total letterwinners from last season’s roster, including 2015 All-American Athletic Conference Second Team selection Lana Spitler and All-Rookie Team choice Courtney Cash. • Since its inaugural season in 1994, the Pirates have logged 198 victories as a program and enter the 2016 campaign just two away from 200 all-time. • Eight opponents on ECU’s schedule earned NCAA Tournament berths last season (William & Mary, VirginiaTech, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Cincinnati, UConn, UCF and USF) while five of them advanced beyond the first round. • Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth enters his 18th campaign at the helm of the program with a 166-129-41 record. In the American Athletic Conference, he is the second-longest tenured head coach behind only UConn’s Len Tsantiris (36 years).

Notebook • The Bulls posted their fourth straight campaign with double digit wins in 2014 and fifth in six seasons. The 15 wins tied the record for most in a season in school history. • The Bulls placed four players on All-Conference teams, including Defensive Player of the Year Jackie Simpson, for the third year in a row. The only returning all-conference member is junior goalkeeper Kat Elliott. • USF will replace a large senior class, welcoming 14 new players for the 2016 season. Of the 14, there are two transfers and 12 freshmen. • Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown will be in her tenth season at the helm of the program and needs just 11 wins to reach 100 at USF.
