The American Athletic Conference The American Athletic Conference consists of 12 prestigious institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the U.S. Naval Academy (in football only), the University of South Florida Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa. Under the leadership of commissioner Mike Aresco, the American Athletic Conference has written an impressive list of accomplishments, both in the competitive arena and the classroom. In the course of its first three seasons, The American has taken its place at the forefront of intercollegiate athletics, with a collection of national team and individual championships and football and men’s and women’s basketball postseason victories that place The American among the elite Division I FBS conferences. The league has produced four NCAA championship teams – UConn men’s basketball in 2014 and UConn women’s basketball in 2014, 2015 and 2016 – two New Year’s Six bowl champions, and two individuals who have won NCAA titles, most recently SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau, who was the 2015 national champion in men’s golf. Additionally, American Athletic Conference teams have advanced to the College World Series, reached the semifinal and final rounds of the NIT, qualified for the match play round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship and registered a top-10 finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The American Athletic Conference was one of six finalists for the 2016 Sports Business Journal Sports League of the Year award, along with Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, NASCAR, the National Basketball Association and the PGA Tour. The American was the only entity from college athletics to be so honored. In football, three American Athletic Conference teams were in the final College Football Playoff rankings of 2015, while two teams from The American were ranked in the top 20 of the final national polls in both 2013 and 2015. Eight of The American’s 12 football teams played in bowl games to cap the 2015 season as Houston defeated Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and Navy beat Pittsburgh in the Military Bowl. Houston’s finish at No. 8 nationally

gave The American a top-10 team in the final national polls for the second time in the league’s three seasons. UCF finished No. 10 in the 2013 rankings after the Knights’ Fiesta Bowl win against Baylor. In 2014, The American had the best men’s basketball postseason record of any league, when conference teams were a combined 13-4, and the league sent four teams to the 2016 NCAA Championship. Teams from The American have registered top-10 national rankings in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s soccer, men’s golf, and men’s track and field. Individual teams in The American have enjoyed unprecedented success since the conference’s formation. Houston went 13-1 in the 2015 football season, setting a school record for wins, while Navy won a program-record 11 games in its first season in the conference, also in 2015. The 2014 season saw Memphis finish with 10 wins in football for the first time since 1938, while Temple enjoyed its first 10-win season in 2015. That kind of success has led to an across-the-board increase in football attendance. The American Athletic Conference had four of the top six teams in average attendance gain from 2015 to 2016, while the conference as a whole realized a 9.1-percent increase at the turnstiles. Cincinnati, Houston and Temple all set single-game attendance records at their respective facilities Under The American’s banner, SMU advanced to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time since 1993. UCF and Houston have both achieved top-10 rankings in baseball in the past two years. USF finished the 2014-15 season at No. 8 in the final men’s golf national ranking. The UConn women’s basketball team won its NCAA-record ninth, 10th and 11th national championships. American Athletic Conference student-athletes have distinguished themselves in all facets of intercollegiate athletics. Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich won the Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player in 2015, while Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. UConn basketball standout Breanna Stewart finished her career as the most decorated player in college basketball history as she was chosen as the consensus national player of the

The American Athletic Conference year for the third time and became the first player be named four times as the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four. Reynolds and Stewart were selected as the winners of the 2016 AAU James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athletes, marking only the second time in the 86-year history of the award that multiple winners were chosen. Additionally, SMU’s Avery Acker was chosen as the Division I women’s volleyball Academic All-America of the Year in 2015, while Navy offensive guard E.K. Binns was one of 12 finalists nationally for the Campbell Trophy, which is presented by the National Football Foundation to the top scholar-athlete in college football. Tulsa soccer standout Katy Riojas was the winner of the 2016 NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, while Golden Hurricane rower Emalia Seto won the 2016 NCAA Jim McKay Scholarship. Two student-athletes from The American earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships in the conference’s first three years. American Athletic Conference alumni have made their mark in professional sports as well. UCF quarterback Blake Bortles was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 3 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. More recently, a number of American Athletic Conference athletes have been selected in the first round of the professional entry drafts in football, basketball, baseball and soccer. The American has had two first-round picks in football in each of the last three seasons, while the conference produced four first-round picks, including the top three selections, in the 2016 WNBA Draft. The American Athletic Conference holds media rights partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which provide the conference with outstanding national exposure on the two industry leaders in sports television. The football portion of the contract calls for nearly 90 percent of conference-controlled games on national broadcast or national cable platforms. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which was played in 2015, was televised

by ABC as part of Championship Saturday. In men’s basketball, the television deal calls for all conferencecontrolled games to be televised, with more than 63 percent slotted for national broadcast or national cable – a minimum of 107 games. The entire postseason tournament is televised, including the championship game, which is on ABC or ESPN. Sixty percent of the American’s women’s basketball games are carried on national cable, regional sports networks or ESPN3, while the conference has a multi-year agreement with CBS Sports Network for coverage of select baseball games. American Athletic Conference teams have access to the pinnacle of college football’s postseason structure. An American representative would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams in the CFP selection committee’s final ranking. Otherwise, the league would place its champion in a New Year’s Bowl if it is ranked higher than the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference. Additionally, The American holds primary or secondary partnerships with 12 bowls for the current six-year cycle, ensuring multiple annual matchups against the nation’s top conferences and providing desirable postseason destinations to member institutions and their fans. The American Athletic Conference serves its membership from a state-of-the-art office located in Providence, R.I. The location of the conference headquarters – just steps from the city’s Amtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green International Airport – gives the conference easy access to its member schools. The conference headquarters is equipped with a complete video production studio, which serves as the home of The American Digital Network, and meeting rooms to accommodate the many coaches’ and administrators’ meetings held on-site each year.

The American Athletic Conference Three’s Company The American Athletic Conference was one of five FBS leagues that had at least three 10-win teams in 2015 (Houston, Navy, Temple). The others were the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC. Poll Position Houston finished the 2015 season ranked No. 8 in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls. It was Houston’s highest finish in the AP poll since 1979, when the Cougars were No. 5. Navy was ranked No. 18 in both polls for the MIdshipmen’s best AP finish since 1963 (No. 2). The Best Around Temple LB Tyler Matakevich was chosen as the 2015 winner of the Nagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player. To Be The Best ... Houston was one of two schools nationally (along with Stanford) to go unbeaten in at least four games against top-25 opponents in 2015. Back Where We Belong UConn and USF returned to postseason play for the first time since the 2010 season. Tulsa played in a bowl game for the first time since the 2012 campaign. Rank And File Ten of the 12 teams in the American Athletic Conference have been ranked in the top 25 of the Bowl Championship Series standings or the College Football Playoff committee rankings between 2008 and 2015. The average home crowd in The American was 31,842 in 2015 after an average of 21,193 in 2014. Temple drew 69,176 at Lincoln Financial Field for its season-opening win against Penn State and broke that mark with 69,280 against Notre Dame. Cincinnati had an on-campus record with 40,124 in attendance against UConn. Memphis had 60,241 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for the Tigers’ game against Mississippi, while Houston had a TDECU Stadium-record 42,159 on hand for the Cougars’ game against Memphis. Ratings Scale The American Athletic Conference had 18 games last season that drew at least one million television viewers. Nearly six million television viewers nationally watched Temple’s Oct. 31 game against Notre Dame on ABC. The game averaged 5,977,000 viewers despite competition from Game 4 of the World Series. In Philadelphia, the Temple-Notre Dame game drew a 17.6 local rating which, by far, was ABC’s highest recorded rating for a regular-season college football game in the nation’s No. 4 designated market area. The game also provided the backdrop for ESPN College GameDay, which was staged from Independence Mall. Memphis’ Oct. 17 win against Mississippi attracted a 22.6 rating and a 39 share in the Memphis DMA, while the Tigers also earned local ratings of 12.0 or better for their conference games against Cincinnati and Tulsa on ESPN. As Easy As ABC The American Athletic Conference had five conferencecontrolled games televised nationally on ABC in 2015 — two more than the annual contracted minimum. The American Athletic Conference Championship had a television audience of 2.4 million viewers, while the regular-season finale between Houston and Navy drew 3.1 million viewers.

American Idols Keep an eye on these American Athletic Conference players, who could challenge for All-America honors in 2016. Jordan Akins, TE, UCF The 6-3, 240-pound Akins was off to a terrific start to the 2015 season (14 rec., 152 yards, two TDs in two games) before an injury on the opening kickoff of the following game ended his year. Mike Boone, RB, Cincinnati Boone split carries in a talented backfield, but averaged 7.2 yards per attempt and led the Bearcats with nine touchdowns. Jamar Summers, CB, UConn Summers led The American with eight interceptions as part of a defense that held eight of 13 opponents to fewer than 20 points. Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina Jones led The American with 98 receptions last season and enters his senior year with 2,553 career receiving yards. Greg Ward Jr., QB, Houston Ward is finding himself on some early Heisman Trophy candidate lists after he rushed for 21 touchdowns and threw for 17 in Houston’s 13-1 season. Jake Elliott, K, Memphis Elliott earned second team All-America status from the Associated Press and Walter Camp last year and is a two-time American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year. Jamir Tillman, WR, Navy Despite playing in an offense that had a sixto-one run-pass ratio last year, Tillman had five touchdown receptions and averaged 20.6 yards per catch. Marlon Mack, RB, USF Mack set USF’s single-season rushing record with 1,381 yards and was The American’s leader with 115.1 yards per game. Matt Davis, QB, SMU Davis rushed for 10 touchdowns and threw for 16 as the Mustangs nearly tripled their offensive production from 2014 to 2015. Jahad Thomas, RB, Temple Thomas was a workhorse in the Owls’ backfield who rushed for 1,262 yards and was second among American running backs with 17 touchdowns last year. Tanzel Smart, DT, Tulane Smart registered 15.0 tackles for loss from the interior line on his way to first team allconference honors in 2015.

Keevan Lucas, WR, Tulsa Lucas was averaging 102.2 receiving yards per game for suffering a season-ending knee injury early last season. He had 101 catches for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2014.

The American Athletic Conference Chart Toppers The American Athletic Conference has had a team finish in the national top 10 of the Associated Press and USA Today polls in two of its first three seasons. Houston was No. 8 in the final polls of 2015, while UCF was No. 10 to close the 2013 season. The American placed two teams in the top 20 of the final national polls in each of those years. Breaking Ground Since the formation of The American, several teams have enjoyed unprecedented success in FBS football. Houston (13), Navy (11) and Temple (10) all set or tied school records for wins in 2015. Memphis won 10 games in the 2014 season to match its school record, set in 1938. Individualism In its first three seasons, American Athletic Conference football players have earned some of college football’s most pretigious individual awards. Former Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich won the Bedarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player in 2015, while former Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting and won the AAU Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athlete. Former Memphis punter Tom Hornsey was chosen as the 2013 Ray Guy Award winner as the nation’s top punter. Draft Status The American Athletic Conference has had at least two players chosen in the first round of each of the last three NFL drafts. Former Houston cornerback William Jackson III was taken at No. 24 overall by the Cincinnati Bengals, while former Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch went at No. 26 to the Denver Broncos in the 2016 draft. The American has had three quarterbacks taken in the first round in its first three seasons.

Welcome Aboard The American Athletic Conference will introduce four new head coaches in 2016. Former Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost takes over at UCF,. Former Duke offensive coordinator Scottie Montgomery is the new head coach at East Caorlina. Mike Norvell, most recently the offensive coordinator at Arizona State, is the head coach at Memphis, while former Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz is the new man at Tulane. Giant Killers UConn was the only team to defeat Houston in the Cougars’ 13-1 season last year. The Huskies also were the only American Athletic Conference team to defeat UCF, when the Knights went 7-1 in conference play in 2015. Three Grand Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans looks to become the first Golden Hurricane player to throw for 3,000 yards in three separate seasons. Evans ranked eighth nationally with 4,332 passing yards last season. Dual Threats Two returing American Athletic Conference quarterbacks — Houston’s Greg Ward Jr. and USF’s Quinton Flowers — rankd among the conference’s top 10 players in both rushing and passing in 2015. SMU quarterback Matt Davis finished as the Mustangs’ leading rusher and passer as well. Championship Week The second American Athletic Conference Football Championship will take place Dec. 3, 2016, at the home venue of the divisional champion with the best record in conference games. The game will take place at noon ET and will be televised on either ABC or ESPN. Houston defeated Temple 24-13 at TDECU Stadium to win last year’s inaugural championship.

Rising Stars Here are some American Athletic Conference players who could be poised for breakout seasons in 2016. Tre’Quan Smith, So., WR, UCF Smith was The American’s Rookie of the Year in 2015 after he caught 52 passes for 724 yards and four TDs as a true freshman. Cortez Broughton So., DT, Cincinnati Broughton made 11 starts as a redshirt freshman last year and will be a key factor on an experienced Bearcat defensive line. E.J. Levenberry, Jr., LB, UConn Levenberry played all 13 games for Florida State’s national championship team in 2014 and strengthens a solid group of linebackers. Phillp Nelson, Jr., QB, East Carolina Nelson, who was a two-year starter at Minnesota, could be next in line on East Carolina’s list of talented quarterbacks. Will Noble, So., C, Houston Noble showed poise and ability as a true freshman as he stepped in to earn Freshman All-America honors on an offensive line unit that was beset with injuries in 2015. Riley Ferguson, Jr., QB, Memphis Ferguson threw for 2,942 yards and 35 touchdowns at Coffeyville CC and should step right into the starting lineup following the departure of Paxton Lynch to the NFL. Tago Smith, Sr., QB, Navy Smith saw limited action behind Heisman Trophy candidate Keenan Reynolds, but was effective in spot duty and has the keys to the Midshipmen’s offense as a senior. Rodney Adams, Sr., WR, USF The Bulls’ turnaround last year coincided with the strong second-half play of Adams, who had 822 yards and nine TDs as a junior. Courtland Sutton, So., WR, SMU Sutton tied for the conference lead with nine touchdown catches as a true freshman and emerged as a big-play threat from the outset. Ventell Bryant, So., WR, Temple Bryant set school records for receptions (39) and receivng yards (579) by a freshman and should be a focal point of the Owls’ offense as a sophomore.

Dontrell Hilliard, Jr., RB, Tulane Hilliard rushed for 646 yards last year and should thrive in the run-oriented offense of new coach Willie Fritz.

Quinton Flowers, USF

Jeremy Smith, Jr., DE, Tulsa Smith had 6.5 tackles for loss last year and should be a big part of the Golden Hurricane’s veteran defense in 2016.

STORYLINES Scott Frost enters his first year as UCF’s head coach after serving as offensive coordinator at Oregon. WR Tre’Quan Smith was named as the 2015 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year after he had 52 catches for 724 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman. QB Justin Holman enters his third year as the Knights’ starting signal-caller. The Knights return eight offensive starters from last season, as well as TE Jordan Akins, who missed the last nine games of 2015 due to injury. UCF returns seven of its top eight tackle leaders from last season.

STORYLINES The Huskies returned to a bowl game for the first time since 2010 by winning three of their final four games of the regular season. UConn has handed the eventual American Athletic Conference champion its only conference loss in two of the league’s first three seasons (UCF in 2013 and Houston in 2015). RB Arkeel Newsome was the conference leader in all-purpose yards in 2015 (129.7 ypg). CB Jamar Summers led The American with eight interceptions in 2015. UConn’s two returning starters at linebacker will be joined by LB E.J. Levenberry, who is a transfer from Florida State.

STORYLINES East Carolina welcomes head coach Scottie Montgomery, who had been the offensive coordinator for the most successful era at Duke in program history. QB Philip Nelson started 16 games at Minnesota from 2012-13 and could emerge as the Pirates’ starter in 2016. Nelson threw nine touchdown passes and rushed for six TDs in 2013. WR Zay Jones, a fourth-year starter, enters 2016 in third place on East Carolina’s career receptions (241) and receiving yards (2,553) charts. East Carolina has made eight bowl appearances in the last 10 seasons. The Pirates dropped four of their last five games in 2015 to miss the postseason for the first time since 2011.

STORYLINES Head coach Mike Norvell, most recently the deputy head coach and offensive coordinator at Arizona State, begins his first year at Memphis. The Tigers have won a combined 19 games in the last two seasons — the most in program history in a two-year span. Memphis was ranked as high as No. 13 nationally last season. Memphis won its first eight games of 2015, but dropped four of its last five to close the season. K Jake Elliott has been The American’s Special Teams Player of the Year twice (2014, 2015) and was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker. He was an Associated Press and Walter Camp All-America second team selection in 2015.

STORYLINES Navy set a school record with 11 wins in 2015 as the Midshipmen tied Houston for the American Atheltic Conference West Division title. QB Tago Smith will step in to replace Keenan Reynolds, who finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. WR Jamir Tillman is the only returning starter on offense for Navy. Tillman accounted for five of Navy’s nine touchdown receptions and 45 percent of the team’s total receptions last year. The defense has seven starters returning, including all of its reguar linebackers. Navy has played in seven bowl games in the last eight years.

STORYLINES USF returned to postseason play for the first time in five years as the Bulls played in the Miami Beach Bowl. USF beat each of the other five teams in The American’s East Division in the regular season. RB Marlon Mack set USF’s single-season rushing records with 1,381 yards and an average of 6.6 yards per carry in 2015. The Bulls return seven starters from a defense that ranked 13th nationally in tackles for loss (7..5 per game) and 14th in interceptions (17). LB Auggie Sanchez had 117 tackles last season, the mos among returning players in the American Athletic Conference.

STORYLINES The Mustangs return eight offensive starters from a unit that averaged 382.8 yards per game in Chad Morris’ first year as head coach. SMU, which averaged 11.1 points per game in 2014, nearly tripled its offensive production in 2015, as the Mustangs averaged 27.8 ppg. QB Matt Davis raked sixth in The American in total offense (251.7 ypg) and finished as SMU’s leading rusher and passer in 2015. WR Courtland Sutton tied for the American Athletic Conference lead with nine touchdown receptions in his freshman season.

STORYLINES Willie Fritz, who most recently led Georgia Southern to back-to-back nine-win seasons, enters his first year as Tulaneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head coach. Fritz was a two-time FCS national coach of the year honoree as head coach at Sam Houston State. Fritz is 58-22 in six years as a Division I head coach. Tulane returns seven starters from a defense that ranked 12th nationally in tackles for loss in 2015. LB Nico Marley and DT Tanzel Smart were both all-conference first team choices. RB Dontrell Hilliard is the only returning skill position starter from last season. Hilliard led the Green Wave in both rushing yards (644) and rushing touchdowns (six) in 2015.

STORYLINES Tulsa improved by four wins from 2014 to 2015 in Philip Montgomery’s first year on the Golden Hurricane sideline. QB Dane Evans led The American in passing (333.2 ypg) and total offense (332.5 ypg) and was seventh nationally in passing yards. WR Keevan Lucas will return for the 2016 season after he missed the last eight games of 2015 with a knee injury. Lucas had five touchdown receptions and averaged 102.2 receiving yards in the first four games of last season. Tulsa returns four of its top five tacklers from last season. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Keenan Reynolds • Sr. • QB • Navy • Antioch, Tenn. Reynolds rushed for 1,373 yards and a league-leading 24 touchdowns in the 2015 season on his way to a fifth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting. Reynolds also threw eight touchdown passes with one interception in 115 attempts. He finished his career as the NCAA all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (88) and total touchdowns (88) and became the first player in NCAA history to have three seasons with at least 23 rushing touchdowns. Reynolds was chosen as a third-team All-America selection by the Associated Press after he helped Navy to a school-record 11 wins.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Tyler Matakevich • Sr. • LB • Temple • Stratford, Conn. Matakevich was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after he registered his fourth consecutive season with at least 100 tackles – a feat accomplished by only six other players in NCAA FBS history. Matakevich finished the season with 138 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 15.0 tackles for loss and five interceptions. He was the only player in FBS football to lead his team in tackles in every game in 2015, and he was the winner of the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player and was chosen as an NCAA consensus All-America pick. SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE YEAR Jake Elliott • Jr. • K • Memphis • Western Spring, Ill. Elliott becomes the first player in American Athletic Conference history to repeat as a major individual award winner as he was named Special Teams Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Elliott was The American’s top-scoring kicker in 2015, with 132 points on a league-high 23 field goals and 63 PATs. An Associated Press and Walter Camp second-team All-America selection and a finalist for the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker, Elliott made 10 of 11 field goal attempts from 40 yards or longer. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Tre’Quan Smith • Fr. • WR • UCF • Delray Beach, Fla. Smith was a bright spot for UCF on his way to Rookie of the Year honors in The American as he finished with 52 receptions for 724 yards and four touchdowns – all team highs. Smith had more than twice as many receptions and receiving yards as any other UCF player, while he finished among the league’s top 10 in both categories.
