WOmen’S SOccer
Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence.
In its inaugural year, The American is fortunate to be able to draw from the previous successes and traditions already established in its 10 inaugural women’s soccer programs.
With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 2013 – its debut season – consists of 10 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Louisville, the University of Memphis, Rutgers University, Southern Methodist University, the University of South Florida and Temple University. All members sponsor women’s soccer, making 2013-14 a ten-member league for the sport. In 2014-15, East Carolina University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa come aboard. The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only. The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, will immediately take a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with schools that have played in a combined five Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won eight NCAA women’s basketball championships since 1995.
Two programs, UCF and Rutgers, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship in 2012. UCF advanced after winning the 2012 Conference USA Championship. Seven teams finished last season ranked in the top 100 of the final NCAA RpI rankings, with six of the seven in the top 64. UCF closed out 2012 at No. 20 and enters 2013 at No. 21, while Louisville finished No. 40 with Rutgers right behind at No. 41. USF checked in at No. 51, UConn at No. 60 and SMU at No. 63. The league will add two more top-tier programs to the group in the fall of 2014 in Tulsa and East Carolina. Tulsa finished runner-up to UCF in the 2012 Conference USA tournament, while East Carolina also capped a top-100 RpI ranking last season. The state-of-the-art UCF Soccer and Track Complex will host the first American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 8 (semifinals) and 10 (finals). First round and quarterfinal games will be held at campus sites on Oct. 31 and Nov. 3.
The 2013 season will mark the final year of a six-year arrangement with ESpN that gives The American national exposure on ABC television and the ESpN family of networks. ESpN, ESpN2 or ABC will carry a minimum of 19 American home football games each season. Championship Week in December includes three American games on either ABC, ESpN or ESpN2. At least four American games are featured on ESpN’s Thursday-night pac kage. In addition, ESpN Regional Television will continue to produce and distribute its Game of the Week package to a nationally syndicated audience, reaching more than 30 million homes. Most of these games also will be available as part of the ESpN Gameplan subscription service. Finally, a minimum of five home games will be carried on ESpNU.

Mike Aresco, one of the most influential leaders in sports television and collegiate sports, was named Commissioner of the Big East Conference on August 14, 2012, and has overseen the successful rebranding of the league as the American Athletic Conference. In his first year as commissioner, Aresco has overseen a strategic reinvention of the Conference which will keep The American at the forefront of Division I college athletics. By the 2015-16 academic year, the American Athletic Conference will include 11 all-sports members and Navy as a football-playing member. The Conference will launch a football championship game for the first time in 2015 and is the first league to explore staging its own postseason bowl game. Aresco’s first months were marked by his successful efforts to ensure the Conference’s place within the College Football playoff – the new system that will determine the national champion, beginning in 2014. Aresco was instrumental in securing the arrangement that will put the American Athletic Conference champion in a New Year’s Day system bowl if it is the highest-ranked team among the champions of five conferences. In the wake of the changes created by college sports realignment, Aresco moved quickly to solidify the conference, leading negotiations that resulted in the most favorable financial terms for the conference’s football schools, after the withdrawal of the non-football-playing schools, who were referred to unofficially as the Catholic 7. He simultaneously led the negotiations that resulted in television contracts with ESpN and CBS Sports, which will give the American Athletic Conference unprecedented national exposure with the two industry leaders in sports television. Aresco then quickly and successfully organized the process whereby the conference was renamed the American Athletic Conference – a name that was immediately accepted in the college landscape – and he also oversaw the process that resulted in the new conference’s popular graphic identity. He has also successfully worked with the
conference schools to arrive at an equitable distribution of existing revenue for the current and new conference institutions, bringing about a period of cohesiveness that is unprecedented in the league’s history. He has restructured the conference office staff to maximize efficiency and better serve the needs of the membership. Among his other significant accomplishments on behalf of the American Athletic Conference was the spearheading of expansion efforts, which resulted in the addition of Tulane University and the University of Tulsa and the transition to membership in all sports for East Carolina University, which was originally admitted to the league for football only; the planning for a conference digital network; successful negotiations for the 2014 men’s and women’s basketball championships at FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., and Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., respectively; and the launching of a brand marketing campaign. He is currently working on the conference’s future bowl lineup. Aresco came to the conference from CBS Sports where he was Executive Vice president, programming. He was responsible for all college sports programming for CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network. Aresco oversaw the acquisition and management of CBS Sports college properties, including the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, regular-season college basketball and football, conference basketball championship games, football bowl games and other programming. His responsibilities included game selection and scheduling, day-to-day operations, contract negotiations, identification of future acquisitions, development of programming strategies and coordination of new media and marketing initiatives. Aresco played an integral role in the landmark deal that created the CBS Sports-Turner Broadcasting partnership, which resulted in the acquisition of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship rights through 2024. He managed the complex 14-year agreement that provides expanded national broadcast and cable coverage of the NCAA basketball championship. Aresco also was instrumental in the CBS Television Network’s groundbreaking bundled rights agreement with the NCAA which granted CBS exclusive rights to the NCAA Tournament from 2003 through 2010. The 2010 NCAA Championship won a Sports Emmy in the Outstanding playoff Coverage category. Aresco also played a key role in negotiating NCAA marketing agreements and in creating a partnership with IMG and the NCAA to assist in acquiring new NCAA corporate sponsors. He also was a significant contributor in the development of new media platforms for the NCAA Championship, including March Madness on
w w w.t h e a m e r i c a n . o r g
Demand, a highly successful streaming platform. In 2008, Aresco negotiated a historic 15year agreement with the Southeastern Conference to televise the league’s football and basketball games. The agreement also provided multiple new media rights for CBS, CBS Sports Network and CBS Interactive. He forged numerous basketball agreements with major conferences, including the Big East, ACC, Big Ten, pac-12 and Big 12. Aresco recently negotiated 10-year extensions of the Army-Navy and Notre Dame-Navy football rivalries. Aresco was the creator and executive producer of The Tony Barnhart Show, the critically- acclaimed college football show, as well as Courtside with Seth Davis, a highly-regarded weekly show devoted to college basketball, both of which air on the CBS Sports Network. In 2004, he was appointed by the late NCAA president Myles Brand to the Basketball partnership, a select panel whose mission was to explore ways to improve and promote college basketball. He is a charter member of the steering committee of the Columbia University/New York City Chapter of the National Football Foundation and serves on the board of the National Sports Marketing Network. Aresco joined CBS Sports from ESpN where he was responsible for overseeing the acquisition, scheduling and development of long-term strategies for all ESpN college sports properties. Earlier in his tenure at ESpN, he was responsible for programming a wide variety of sports properties, including College Football Association, Big 10, and pac-10 college football, NCAA events, including early rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament, the College World Series and various professional sports events, including thoroughbred racing, Top Rank Boxing, CFL football, Australian Rules Football, rodeo and yachting. He was the architect of ESpN’s signature Thursday night college football series and helped develop ESpN’s Bowl Week. He joined ESpN in 1984 as Counsel and was named Assistant General Counsel in 1988 before moving to the programming department. Aresco is a phi Beta Kappa graduate of Tufts University (B.A., magna cum laude, history), the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts (M.A., international relations), where he held a John Moors Cabot Scholarship, and the University of Connecticut Law School (J.D.). He practiced law privately in Hartford, Conn., for several years. Aresco and his wife, Sharon, have two adult sons, Matthew, an Emmy-nominated television producer who owns a production company in Connecticut, and Brett, and aspiring actor who lives in New York City.

The UCF Soccer Complex has a top-notch playing surface for the teams and plenty of great seats for fans. It should be a wonderful event.” The UCF Soccer and Track Complex serves as home for the Knights’ men’s and women’s soccer and women’s track and field programs. The facility, originally built in 1991, was re-opened in May 2011 following the construction of a grandstand seating facility on the west side. Surrounding one of the top pitches in all of college soccer is an eight-lane, 400-meter track featuring a Martin Surface that was refurbished in the summer of 2004. In 2008, an expanded throwing area for the hammer, discus and shotput was also added to the complex. Both long jump and triple jump pits were rebuilt prior to the 2008 season. A new grandstand section, along with on-site restrooms, was added in the most recent phase of construction. The grandstand brought an additional 1,475 seats, bringing the total capacity to more than 2,000 for the entire complex. The new press box comfortably sits media members along with event and department staffs. Fans also enjoy a new sound system that helps improve the game day atmosphere. The men’s and women’s soccer teams also have access to the soccer practice field, located northeast of the UCF Soccer andTrack Complex and just outside IOA plaza of Bright House Networks Stadium. Up-to-date information regarding the 2013 American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship will be available through Championship Central (www.theamerican.org.) Media credentials can be obtained through emailing merbes@theamerican.org. Quick facts • Cost was roughly $1.2 million • New stands with seating capacity for 1,475 fans, bringing total complex capacity to over 2,000 • New press box with sound system • permanent restroom facilities on site • New fencing around entire complex • New main entranceway with ornamental fencing and brick pillars with UCF logos

UCF ventures into its inaugural season as a member of the American Athletic Conference with a brand new coaching staff. Olympic gold medalist, World Cup champion and two-time NCAA champion Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak (head coach) along with her husband Tim (associate head coach) signed on to lead UCF following the departure of longtime coach Amanda Cromwell to UCLA. •
The Knights spent all of the 2012 season in the national rankings, climbing as high as No. 6 (the best mark in two decades), and finished the year at No. 20. •
The Knights return seven starters, including All-American defender Marissa Diggs, and three of their top five goal scorers from a year ago, when UCF captured its first Conference USA Tournament title. •
In its 32-year history, the UCF women’s soccer program has accumulated 22 conference championships, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and more than 385 victories.

t igers Notebook • Memphis fields a team in 2013 with one senior on the roster. The team, however, is not young; 18 of the 28 players are juniors (9) or sophomores (9). •
Christabel Oduro, the lone senior on the roster, is the two-time defending conference offensive player of the year entering the 2013 season. Oduro has top five program rankings in points (833rd), goals (32-3rd) and assists (19-4th). •
The Lady Tigers return sophomore goalkeeper Christa Strickland, who saw action in 17 of the 19 games as a true freshmen. Two incoming freshmen will vie for playing time. • Junior midfielder Kylie Davis, freshman forward Valerie Sanderson and freshman goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel were called to the Canada U20 Excel Camp in Vancouver in late June. Sanderson and Bard-Martel both played for the Canada U17 squad in the World Cup last fall while Davis and Oduro played for the Canada U20 side at the World Cup.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PROGRAMS HOME TO SEVERAL NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER STARS The inaugural American Athletic Conference members have rich histories. From the playing field to the classroom and into their communities, American institutions and their programs have long legacies of making their marks in the world of sports and beyond. On Thursdays, the American intends to highlight these stories in our Throwback Thursday feature series. This week, the series begins with a history lesson in women’s soccer, the first sport to kick off play in the American’s first year later this month. When browsing the record books of the 10 women’s soccer programs in The American, some famous names quickly appear. Alumnae netters of American schools have been at the forefront of the sport from the beginnings of women’s soccer as a national program in the early 1980s and into the recent success seen by the U.S. Women’s National Team. Three of these alumnae in particular have had significant impacts on the statistics, and shaping the scene of the sport on a worldwide level. Carli Lloyd’s name became common knowledge during the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2012 Olympic run by the USWNT, when she played all but 16 minutes in the World Cup matches and netted both goals in the 2012 gold medal match. Fewer know that Lloyd is a Rutgers alum who tops many of the record books in piscataway. A Scarlet Knight from 2001-04, Lloyd is Rutgers’ all-time leader in points with 117, goals (50) and shots (295). She’s also a presence in the records of the former BIG EAST, earning First-Team All-BIG EAST honors all four of her years and 2004 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year. Lloyd is also a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America, and earlier this year, was inducted into the Rutgers University Hall of Distinguished Alumni. Since her time at Rutgers, Lloyd has been a consistent force on the field for the USWNT thanks to her abilities to come through in the clutch. In her 157 caps since her debut in 2005, she has scored 44 goals and has become a mainstay in the lineup at midfield on the largest of stages. Beyond her achievements in 2011 and 2012, Lloyd also put in the game-winning goal during the 2008 Olympic gold-medal match in Beijing, pushing the U.S. over Brazil in overtime. Born and raised in New Jersey, Lloyd splits her time between her USWNT duties, her NWSL club (the Western New York Flash), and her home state. prior to Lloyd, one of the most decorated players in the history of American Athletic Conference institutions spent her collegiate career at one of the most storied women’s soccer programs in the nation, UConn, under current head coach Len Tsantiris. Sara Whalen, a Husky from 1994-97, was a three-time AllAmerica, and her outstanding senior season in

1997 earned her both NSCAA National player of the Year and the Honda Award Women’s Soccer player of the Year honors. Whalen still holds the most goals, assists and points ever recorded by a UConn senior, and she is only the second women’s soccer player in UConn’s 35-year program history to have her number retired. Whalen made her debut with the USWNT in April 1997 prior to graduating from UConn and scored her first goal a year later. She played her part as a reserve defender during the U.S.’s celebrated 1999 World Cup run, notching the second-most minutes by a reserve and playing the entire overtime against China in the memorable final. Whalen also earned a silver medal a year later as a member of the 2000 Olympic squad. Until complications from ACL/MCL reparative surgery nearly ended her life in 2002, effectively ending her soccer career, Whalen was a founding member of the WUSA, the first women’s professional soccer league in the U.S. Today, Whalen (now Sara Hess) is a psychologist and mom in Connecticut who still enjoys coaching her kids through their young soccer careers, as noted in a USWNT feature published in March. When Whalen entered the 1999 World Cup Final at the beginning of overtime, she was subbing for another alumna of an American program and a pillar of women’s soccer in the United States, Michelle Akers. Akers played for UCF in 1984 and from 1986-88, and went on to play for the USWNT for 15 years. As a Knight, Akers was a four-time All-America, the first Hermann Trophy award winner for women in 1988, and recorded the most points in program history (134). She was inducted into UCF’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 and her jersey number 10 has been retired.
Akers was a founding member of the USWNT in 1985, and remained on the roster until retiring in 2000 after notching 153 caps. Her national team career was groundbreaking; she is the third all-time leading scorer with 105 goals, 37 assists and 247 points, second to only Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm. Akers won two World Cups, in 1991 and 1999, and led the U.S. in scoring in the 1991 event. She is also an Olympic gold medalist, which she earned at the 1996 Atlanta Games, a 1998 FIFA Order of Merit honoree and was inducted to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame. Since retiring, Akers has written several books, founded her own soccer training company and lives outside of Atlanta with her family. Other notable alumnae of American women’s soccer programs include: • Saskia Webber, rutgers – Webber played at Rutgers from 1989-92, where she holds the most career saves with 522. She was the first women’s soccer player inducted into the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame, and was a reserve goalkeeper on the USWNT from 1992-1999. • Karen ferguson-Dayes, UConn – FergusonDayes was a UConn Husky from 1990-93 under Len Tsantiris. She was a three-time All-America and member of the USWNT in 1992 and 1993. Ferguson-Dayes is now the head women’s soccer coach at American rival Louisville. • tara Buckley, UConn – Buckley is UConn’s only four-time All-America, which she earned during her 1980-83 career. She spent two years on the USWNT (1993 and 1995) and is the only other women’s soccer player other than Whalen to have her number retired by UConn.
