J O SE PH J . MO R R O N E S TA D IU M Joseph J. Morrone Stadium (Storrs, Conn.) has been selected as the site of the 2014 American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championships, as announced by the conference this spring. The tournament begins Nov. 8 with the quarterfinal rounds at campus sites before the semifinals (Nov. 14) and finals (Nov. 16) take place at UConn. Connecticut, which went 9-1-2 last season at home, will host the conference championships for the first time since 2007 when it defeated Notre Dame, 2-0, to win its seventh ever conference title. Joseph J. Morrone Stadium, with its seating capacity of 5,100 and a natural grass-playing surface, is one of the finest college facilities in the nation. The natural grass-playing surface measures 75 by 120 yards. Fans have flocked to Storrs in record numbers to watch a perennial national contender for over a decade. Since 1999, the UConn men’s program has ranked in the top-five in attendance every year, including leading the nation in average or overall attendance in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Morrone Stadium has undergone major aesthetical improvements over the past few years. This new-look facility has been funded by both state monies and by private contributions through the UConn Friends of Soccer support organization. These enhancements include: new aluminum bleachers; banners and retired numbers atop the press box and along the fence line; replacement of the natural grass surface, with new grass and an irrigation and automatic watering system installed; and one of the top press boxes in the country, with accommodations for over 20 media outlets. The fully enclosed and heated aluminum-sided press box measures 120 feet. It includes a 60-foot midsection for working media, rooms for television and home and visiting radio, an enclosed upper camera deck, and special hospitality areas for guests. Up-to-date information regarding the 2014 American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship will be available through Championship Central at www. theamerican.org.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE #AmericanRising Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence. With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 201415 consists of 11 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida, Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa. The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only. The success of The American in Year 1 was not limited to the gridiron. UConn won NCAA titles in both men’s and women’s basketball. The conference had the best postseason winning percentage of any league in men’s basketball, while The American produced top10 teams in baseball, men’s soccer and men’s golf and sent half of its participating teams to the NCAA Softball Championship.

MEN’S SOCCER The American embarks on its second season of men’s soccer with eight of the conference’s 11 member insitutions sponsoring the sport. UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis, USF, SMU, Temple, and Tulsa comprise the membership for 2014. USF won the 2013 American Athletic Conference Championship. The Bulls defeated the UConn Huskies 6-5 on penalty kicks for the inaugural American men’s soccer title. The American had three bids to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Huskies made a dramatic run through the NCAA Tournament, but saw their postseason dreams end in the quarterfinal round with a 2-1 loss at then No. 8 Virginia. Fourteen players from The American received NSCAA All-Region honors while Andre Blake (UConn), Adria Beso Marco (UConn) and Mark Sherrod (Memphis) were named NSCAA All-Americans. Joseph J. Morronne Stadium will serve as the host of the 2014 American Men’s Soccer Championship. Quarterfinals will be played at campus sites on Saturday, Nov. 8. The semifinals will be held on Nov. 14, with the final on Nov. 16.

The American Athletic Conference administers to its membership from a state-of-the-art office located in Providence, R.I. The location of the conference headquarters – just steps from the city’s Amtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green International Airport – gives the conference easy access to its member schools. The conference headquarters is equipped with a complete video production studio, serving as the home of the American Digital Network, and smalland large-scale meeting rooms to accommodate the many coaches’ and administrators’ meetings held on-site each year.
