Share your thoughts at #AANAM. Join the conversation!

#AANAM Fellow Anuj Dhir, MD, and residents Joaquin Vizcarra, MD, and David Landzberg, MD Emory University, Atlanta First-time attendees What brings you to the Annual Meeting? It’s the mecca of neurological meetings and being active in the community is important to us. We heard it was the fun conference. We heard it was the best one when we were in medical school. There’s a talk on the Neurology of Wine Tasting—how could you not? It combines learning with fun.

Kathleen Healey, NP, PhD University of Nebraska, Omaha Gayathiri Balasubramaniam, MD Resident, Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada What brings you to the Annual Meeting? At Queens we like to come every year to stay updated. I’m interested in the dementia talks and the networking opportunities that you don’t really get when you’re virtual. I’m looking forward to seeing Seattle. I’ve never been here before. I already went to the market and got to see the fish being thrown.

What brings you to the Annual Meeting? I want to raise awareness about disparities for people with disabilities who have neurologic disorders. They are understudied and underserved. They are not given an opportunity to have their voices heard. Many people have what I call a double disparity. We have many African American men in Omaha who have MS and have significant disability. And with all of the people aging with neurologic disorders, this is a locomotive coming down the track.

Richard L. Barbano, MD, PhD, FAAN University of Rochester, New York 30+-year attendee What did you miss about the AAN Annual Meeting during the pandemic? I missed seeing my colleagues. I also enjoy the courses. I’m not a great virtual learner. There are too many distractions at home. I’m much more engaged here. What are highlights of the meeting so far? The plenary sessions have been really informative and up to date. 2022 Annual Meeting • AANextra

Committee, Subcommittees to Advance Academic Neurology Initiatives Academic neurology departments face many challenges, including health care reform, research funding cuts, work force issues, graduate medical education funding cuts, reduced reimbursement for clinical services, increasing regulatory burden, and workforce burnout. In response, the AAN launched its Academic Initiative in 2017 under the leadership of Ralph L. Sacco, MD, MS, FAHA, FAAN, and immediately kicked off efforts by establishing a Neurology Department Chair Work Group and holding its first Neurology Department Summit in 2018. Since then, efforts have included sharing best practices on topics such as revenue generation and funding the education mission; bringing together women chairs of neurology departments and academic business administrators; developing resources for division chiefs and diversity officers, developing webinars for departments to share information on COVID response, financial repercussions, and reactivating departments after the initial surge; and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives, including a webinar on Neurology Departments Addressing Systemic Racism. In 2021, an Academic Neurology Committee and four subcommittees were created: Department Chair Subcommittee, Diversity Officer Subcommittee, Division Chief Subcommittee, and Advancing Women in Academics Subcommittee. “Neurology academic departments deliver clinical care to neurology patients, lead transformative cutting-edge research, and train the leaders of tomorrow in both neurology and neuroscience,” said Sacco, chair of the Academic Neurology Committee. “Academic departments and neurologists are critical to the field of neurology and neuroscience and to patients and trainees, but they are also vital to the health of the Academy. As such, it was imperative to examine the needs of academic neurology department in a holistic manner and develop tangible resources and solutions in support of the future of academic neurology. This committee structure can support these

aims, similar to the way the Medical Economics and Practice Committee focuses on the clinical and business aspects of the practice of neurology.” Looking forward, the committee and subcommittees are already deep in the planning and execution of the third Neurology Department Chair Summit in 2022. Additionally, a new Academic Learner Engagement Center, known as the Academic Exchange, is offered at this week's Annual Meeting. The Academic Exchange provides innovative and interactive education sessions, mentoring, and networking opportunities throughout the week. Additionally, plans are in the works to continually add to the growing number of online programs and resources designed specifically for academic constituents. “It is essential for the field of neurology and neuroscience—and the AAN as an organization—that the Academy meet the needs of academic neurologists. Towards this end, the AAN is investing in resources that ensure that academic neurologists may rely on the AAN to support them across their professional lifetime,” said AAN President Orly Avitzur, MD, MBA, FAAN. “The AAN has long been the home for both the academic neurologists and practicing neurologists, and it will continue to be. However, in the past the AAN has primarily focused on medical students, residents, program directors, clerkship directors, and fellowship directors within neurology academic departments, rather than taking a comprehensive approach to identify and address the needs of all constituents, including the leadership within academic neurology departments. The AAN’s Academic Initiative, and the new committee and subcommittees, seek to do just that.” Visit AAN.com for continued updates on the AAN’s Academic Initiative. 

New Neurology: Education Journal Announced The AAN is launching a new journal—Neurology ® Education—to be a premier peer-reviewed journal in the field of neurologic and neuroscience education research. The AAN is seeking submissions of papers on these topics.

José G. Merino, MD, MPhil, FAHA, FAAN

Roy E. Strowd III, MD, FAAN

The mission of Neurology: Education is to publish original research articles, reviews, and editorials on evidence-based teaching methods and curriculum innovations, and provide the academic community with a forum to exchange ideas that enhance teaching and training in neurology and neuroscience. José G. Merino, MD, MPhil, FAHA, FAAN, editor-in-chief of the flagship journal Neurology ® , said of the new publication, “There is a need for a rigorous journal that publishes robust research on neurologic and medical education. This journal fills that gap. Through it, the AAN serves the neurologic academic community. It will focus on research that will help better educate the future generations of neurologists.”

The newly appointed editor for Neurology: Education is Roy E. Strowd III, MD, MEd, MS, FAAN, currently the section editor for the Resident & Fellow Section of Neurology, where he has managed the education portfolio for the journal. “Neurology has a strong tradition of phenomenal teachers and a commitment to great education,” said Strowd. “Now as much as ever, our field needs outlets to develop, disseminate, and promote evidence-based teaching practices that help us train a competent, fulfilled, and inquisitive current and future neurology workforce. Neurology: Education is an extremely exciting step in this direction. The journal will publish original education research articles, reviews, and editorials on evidence-based teaching methods and curriculum innovations. I hope that this journal can help provide a forum for the academic community to exchange ideas, discuss new innovations, and highlight advances that will enhance neurologic and neuroscience teaching and training. The future of our field is bright for authors, readers, educators, trainees, and our patients.” Strowd is a board-certified neurologist, fellowship trained neuro-oncologist, and educator at Wake Forest School of Medicine. He is assistant dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and director of the Health Professions Education Institute at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Strowd completed his MD and MS degrees at Wake Forest and Master of Education in the Health Professions at Johns Hopkins School of Education. He is an accomplished education researcher. He has received grant funding specific to education research from Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Academy of Neurology. Of his over 100 peer-reviewed research articles, more than 30 are specific to medical education including publications in Teaching and Learning in Medicine, Medical Teacher, MedEd PORTAL, Clinical Teacher, BMC Medical Education, Neurology, and other influential journals. He is former associate editor for Medical Education Online. His many teaching awards and recognitions include the SGEA Innovation in Education Award in 2019 and the inaugural AAMC M. Brownell Anderson Award in 2020. While designed for clinical educators, the journal will be free to readers worldwide. Neurology: Education will be a continuous online-only journal with issues compiled two to four times per year.

Things to Enjoy in Seattle

Top Tourist Attractions: Pike Place, Chihuly Gardens and Glass, Space Needle, Seattle Art Museum & Seattle Asian Art Museum, Museum of Pop Culture, and the Museum of Flight. –UW Pediatric Neurology

Downtown walking tours are good options during the pandemic. Some tours are food-oriented, and there is a chocolate walking tour! The Olympic Sculpture Park contains an outdoor art museum. Get your exercise and art at the same time. Other sites to see are the aquarium, as well as the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI). There is also a Center for Wooden Boats. –Flavia B. Attendees Immersed Themselves in All-digital, Interactive Poster Experience The fully digital scientific poster session has been a hit with attendees all week. The new format has provided a unique opportunity for participants to interact and engage with the research, presenters, and other fellow attendees like never before. “The robust and diverse science presented at an Annual Meeting poster session has always been top-notch,” said AAN Science Committee member Irene Malaty, MD, FAAN. “But this year’s completely new digital format has taken it to another level. Not only are attendees getting the chance to learn about so many exciting new discoveries, but they are able to take in, absorb, and interact with the information in a way that takes the experience to a new level. It’s been very exciting.” Be sure to visit Hall 4B to see these digital posters. 
