THE CHANGING FACE OF MASCULINITY
Barbers have a unique perspective on the ways that masculinity is changing and evolving. Every encounter with a client acts as a window into how a man thinks, feels and looks.
Having worked as a stylist for over 40 years, Kai Schnitzler has utilised his unique insight into the male psyche and adapted his skills and services accordingly. Kai is the CEO of Mister Chop Shop, an establishment nestled in Sydney’s Surry Hills that all at once delivers on the time honoured art of barbering and a distinctly modern grooming experience. His diverse client list puts him face-to-face with all of society, readying business tycoons for board meetings, musicians for the stage, and proud fathers for weddings. We asked him to answer a few questions relating to the ever-changing gentlemen of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Why is looking good important for men?
Caring about one’s appearance, in the right way, is an essential trait in the mens’ world that garners attention, money, jobs, respect and confidence. The truth is that everyone cares about their appearance. It has always been like that, from the first time a caveman coloured a pelt and wore it over his shoulder instead of that out-dated loincloth. Those who say they don’t care are most likely lying. Of course men care how they look. Even if a guy has a great personality, a suitor looking for a date still hopes he’s at least a little cute. A few minutes spent spiffing yourself in the mirror before you leave home reinforces the idea that you deserve success and good treatment in your own mind. How have you seen men change over the years? Is it hard to keep up?
The modern man is completely different from the men years ago. Modern men rarely play the role of the breadwinner or the main base of the family. Usually, both partners share the responsibility of making money. There is always a little difference between generations, but the men of this generation are poles apart from their fathers and grandfathers. That’s a good thing because it could trigger a huge change that will ensure the future is much brighter than the past.
What is the most notable way your own idea of masculinity has changed over the years?
Masculinity is in fact changing and masculinity affects the way we express emotions.
What three words come to mind when you hear ‘masculinity’ and why?
Harley Davidson, Tattoos and Pomade. Why? Because for nearly all of human history the answer to the question of what masculinity is was decided by one group of people: Men!
Do you think it’s important for barbers to converse with their clients beyond ‘hair talk’? How come?
As long as the ‘hair talk’ is done properly, why not? Obviously it depends on the individual person in your chair. Some love a chat, some don’t. Getting to the bottom of this is the most important part of a cut - it’ll change your entire service.
What’s the most important trait a man should possess?
Having integrity is a very important characteristic. A great man will stay true to his word and true to himself. I believe that integrity and ambition are enough to convince someone that you will eventually be financially sound. Men with integrity are highly respected and in return they give respect to others. Men like this often show courage because they are required to stand up for their beliefs at all times.
Who do you think are good male role models and why?
John Legend is a good male role model. He pushes back on negative masculine stereotypes in the media, while also helping to combat the issue of toxic masculinity.
Will Smith is also an exemplary character. He’s gone from a successful rapper who went broke, to an Oscar-nominated actor whose films gross over $100 million each. Much of what he earns he donates to charities - now that’s a real man.
What about a hairstyle that epitomises masculinity?
A Crew Cut. But whether it’s a classic pompadour, a cutthroat cue ball head shave or a mean fade, it isn’t the same as it used to be. And this constant evolution is what epitomises masculinity these days.
Some sage advice for people at home?
The modern man is a higher maintenance beast that requires a specific level of male grooming; a ten buck job just won’t cut it. If you spend less than 45 minutes at your barber, you’re not getting the attention you deserve. So, find the hairdresser or barber you trust - who makes you feel and look great - and keep them in good company.
