SHAPING FUTURE TRENDS
W/ BLADE PULLMAN

The art of barbering is a traditional practice, but for those wanting to make a name for themselves in a competitive industry, it’s the unconventional approach that stands out. As a stylist, Blade Pullman is responsible for helping keep masculinity fresh and in motion, synthesising what’s in fashion to create his own looks and trends.
To have every client walking away feeling distinguished and modern is a daily challenge, so we asked the 2019 All-Star Challenge winner how he shapes the future of hair.
DON’T BE NAIVE TO CHANGE
You may not like a new style, or for a moment, think it’s uncool. But, if it’s on the noggins of dudes walking the streets, it’s best to be ahead by learning the cut and being prepared. Just because you aren’t in love with it now, doesn’t mean it won’t be in fashion in six or twelve months.
MAKE A LOOK YOUR OWN
There have been a few trends over the last few years that I haven’t loved. Of course, they’ve come into fashion and every feller has come asking for the cuts (rightfully so). But it hasn’t deterred me. I’ve taken those styles and made them my own, tweaking them until I’ve liked, and eventually, loved them.
SOAK IT UP
Never. Stop. Learning. Wherever you can access new knowledge, adopt a new technique, or make time to try something completely different, do it. There are lessons to be learned everywhere, and if you keep doing this your potential is limitless.
OPEN YOUR MIND
My wife and friends will be very quick to tell you that I can be stubborn, and this used to include my approach to barbering. It was only when I pushed myself to try new techniques and seek out new looks that I started getting great at my craft. Make sure you open your mind, because being stubborn is a brick wall to true creativity.
BE COURAGEOUS
This is closely related to my last point, but more in line with taking that leap to trust your own abilities and experiment. Approaching a cut and making calculated risks can be scary, but the only way to get the confidence in yourself to be original (and be able to fix it if it goes wrong) is by backing yourself in to nail it.
PREDICTIONS FOR 2021
THE LOOK? I think the 70’s are coming back; a bit of longer hair on the ears is on the rise. Fades will be continued (of course) but I won’t be surprised when I see 70’s vibes start popping up in the streets.
THE INDUSTRY? I hope to see the industry boom coming out of lockdown. Especially the places down Sydney and Melbourne way. Can’t wait to see our barber and hairdresser family thriving and killing it once again.
THE FILM/TV SERIES? Cool stuff in the works I can’t talk about ;) but no doubt the TV and film industry will be itching to get new stuff out. Always nice seeing good haircuts on the big screen too.
THE WORLD? Who knows at this point, a slow climb back. I’m just hoping for the best for everyone.
THE PERSONAL GOAL? I’m obsessed with perfection, it’s what drives me everyday in every haircut. So, just trying to be the best I can and making the most of every opportunity.
