VA0428 recently traveled to Leesylvania State Park on the Potomac River. In addition to a rainy campout, they hiked, enjoyed a ranger-led program, and hands-on activities in the science center. Each Unit did some breakout sessions to complete badge requirements for the Freshwater & Marine Biology Badge.

Dear Friends,

This year’s AHG Program Year Theme, VISION, is a beautiful call to all of us to look at life as God sees it. This is not an easy task as humans work from the flesh, thinking what one sees with her eyes is what is real and true. However, God has woven us not just with flesh and bones, but with a spirit and soul. It is the soul that has potential for eternal life, not our earthly bodies.

The Lord affirmed the excellence of his creation of man, when in Genesis 1:26-27, NASB He stated, “Let Us make mankind in Our image

according to Our likeness […] So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

The Spirit of God was woven into the Lord’s creation of mankind and remains with us today. This Spirit causes us to have VISION beyond our limited eyesight. In His Image, man is blessed with a spiritual VISION that enables us to have faith in things we cannot see but we know.

Because of our spiritual nature, we can have light in darkness. Corrie Ten Boom, an amazing Christian woman, along with her family helped many Jewish people escape from the Nazis during the Holocaust in World War II by hiding them in her home. The family was caught, and she was arrested and sent to the Ravensbruck Concentration Camp. Her most famous book, The Hiding Place, recounts her family’s efforts and how she, as a young woman, found her hope in God despite the dark, dank cell of a concentration camp.

Corrie flexed her spiritual muscles throughout her life, and, when horrible darkness came, she had the VISION to look beyond the obvious. She had a VISION for hope—the hope and security that she found is found in Christ alone. Her wisdom is Holy Spirit-inspired and her encouraging quotes are many:

• “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

• “In darkness, God’s truth shines most clear.”

• “Now I know in my experience that Jesus’ light is stronger than the biggest darkness.”

The Apostle Paul shares a similar joy-filled Spirit despite his circumstances. His prison epistles were written during his incarceration. They are filled with hope for the future because he had spiritual VISION that allowed him to see beyond the prison walls.

In 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, NKJV Paul encourages all of us: “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Believers, please know your VISION is not 20/20 nor is it 20/70 or even 20/200. Your eternal VISION is of the spiritual nature and, with a life filled with a growing relationship with God, it will remain clear, steadfast, and focused.

May your year be blessed with the eternal joy that is found only in Him!

Meet Emily, a Patriot and recent Stars & Stripes Award Recipient from IL1370. Emily earned her Stars & Stripes Award during the 2023-2024 Program Year after clocking a whopping 335.5 project service hours (157 personal service hours, 11 supervisory hours, and 178.5 volunteer contributed hours) benefiting the Restoration Ranch in Belleville, IL.

Emily’s VISION for Her Future:

“In the future, I plan to major in English Education with a minor in Spanish as God has called me to do. He has equipped me with unique spiritual gifts in teaching and mentoring, and I strive to glorify Him through those gifts. America’s schools need spiritual strongholds protecting the front lines and advocating Christian values as I plan to in my future job positions. Furthermore, God has called me to have a family one day, which I can balance with a career in teaching.”

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

HOUSTON AREA TROOP PLAYS PART IN ELIMINATING FOOD INSECURITY

Tackling the widespread problem of food insecurity is a passion of many AHG Troops. TX0003 made a strategic move in southeast Texas with their service to the Houston Food Resource Center network’s main location. Over three hours, 11 Girls Members and six Adult Members worked like the stellar team they are to sort food donations, cull expired food, and to section off and weigh large quantities of fruit for distribution to other food resource centers across the Houston metro area. Lina, a Tenderheart, exclaimed, “I’ve never seen so many oranges in my life!” TX0003 has a longstanding connection with this food resource center whom they serve annually, and their Service Project Coordinator, Christie Falkner, maintains close communication with the center’s administrators so the Troop’s service time is well-spent.

EXPLORER’S HEART TO SERVE BENEFITS CHURCH COMMUNITY FAMILIES

AHG is known for faith, service, and fun! With service as a middle name, it’s also a passion held dear to many individual Girl Members within the ministry. When naturally lived out, one girl’s heart to serve can radiate to so many around her! Mara, an Explorer of MI2818, is one such girl. She enjoys finding new and creative ways to serve the needs of her church community through AHG. Mara has become known as the “service gal” in her Troop with a recent project of cooking and serving hotdogs at her church’s spring Community Easter Egg Hunt event. She also went a step further as one of the egg hiders, preparing the way for the search! Mara also served dinner to church families to raise medical funds for a congregational father’s cancer treatment. Her heart to serve knows no bounds!

EXPLORER’S COMPASSION FOR CANCER PATIENTS PAIRS WITH HER KNITTING SKILLS

In Matthew Chapter 25, Jesus challenged His followers to care for those who are ill. One IL1007 Explorer, Charity, took those words to heart and paired her knitting skills with a heart for service to bless cancer patients at MercyHealth Cancer Center’s Rockford location. At only nine years old, Charity took action devising a circular knitting loom-piece to enable a faster process by which she handmade 11 hats. A soft head covering is essential for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, who have lost their hair. The gifts were far more than just pieces of clothing; Charity asked a local priest to pray over them on behalf of St. Peregrine, the patron saint of cancer patients. She then bestowed the gift to a very grateful cancer center staff for distribution among those in need.

INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING, AND FRIENDSHIP

FLORIDA PATRIOT’S LEVEL AWARD—ONE STEP IN THE STARS & STRIPES AWARD JOURNEY

American Heritage Girls Patriots embark upon a rewarding, albeit challenging, journey when they choose to pursue the Stars & Stripes Award. One prerequisite is to earn the Abigail Adams Level Award, requiring a Girl Member to lead in her Troop, log 20 service hours, earn a mature level faith award, and complete six badges. It is no small feat to earn this AHG Level Award! Lilly Belle of FL2031 received exciting news on two fronts—that she earned the

Abigail Adams Level Award, and she was approved to begin the Stars & Stripes Award journey, the culmination project of her AHG experience. During the entire project, she will log over 100 service hours. No matter what direction Lilly Belle chooses for her Stars & Stripes Award project, she will have challenged herself to a high level and will come out resilient and accomplished on the other side of this experience.

FROM VIETNAM TO LOUISIANA—TROOP LEARNS LUNAR NEW YEAR CUSTOMS

Girl Members gain a beautiful perspective and appreciation for God’s vast world by learning about cultures, customs, and holidays different from their own. When a Troop volunteer shares their culture, this also deepens the girls’ understanding and respect for that leader. LA1943 Troop volunteer, Teresa Bui, annually shares the Lunar New Year customs from her country of origin, Vietnam. Teresa’s teaching offers girls an immersive understanding of the celebration with costumes, traditional foods, and even craft activities! This year was special for the girls because Teresa shared a two-legged lion dance, one of the Lunar New Year customs. Troop Treasurer, Kelli Carruth, noted that “it shows the girls not only how people around the globe celebrate, but how families in our community continue traditions here.”

D.C. METRO AREA DOES OVERNIGHT DEEP DIVE AT MUSEUM OF THE BIBLE

The combined efforts of the AHG Area Teams truly maximize Troops’ potential to leverage the special places around their Area. The D.C. Metro Area Team utilized the new Museum of the Bible alliance this spring for an overnight event attended by 75 Girl Members and 19 Adult Members. Overall, 20 AHG Troops were represented at the event from Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Girls ages 12-18 arrived with sleeping bags and smiles ready to take in the museum in a unique way! The night was filled with exhibits coming alive through Bible characterizations, worship, a devotion, and tours with no time limit (a museum-lover’s dream!). Museum of the Bible staff went above and beyond to welcome the girls, serve them, and ensure the experience was one they’ll truly never forget. BADGESTORIES

LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE

HOME CARE & REPAIR BADGE

Whether or not you enjoy taking things apart to see how they work, learning how to do minor repairs or maintenance in your home is a valuable skill. Learning how to properly use tools, along with a willingness to try different things, will lead to knowledge, independence, a feeling of accomplishment, and can lead to cost savings.

Badgework is a great bridge to impart skills in AHG Troops. Girl Members come away with practical abilities they can use in their adult lives—even securing career paths through their learning! Badgework also gives wonderful opportunities for a girl’s extended family to offer their knowledge in teaching a particular badge. FL0031’s Pioneer and Patriot Unit partnered with an AHG Troop grandfather, Mark Akers, for the Home Care & Repair Badge this spring. The PI/PA Unit learned tool safety, handling and using a miter saw, drill, and power sander while creating their very own peg game out of wood. Other badge requirements include knowing a girl’s home electrical system, which Mark happened to also lend his expertise as a licensed electrician. Whether these Pioneers and Patriots carve out a profession with these skills or not, they will be proficient in home maintenance. AHG builds Godly and competent young women!

AVIATION BADGE

Aviation serves many functions, and those employed in aviationrelated fields impact our lives in many ways. Flying has brought our world closer together and enabled missionaries to reach people groups previously untouchable by modern civilization. Aviation has provided an easier way to share medicine, education, and the gospel to distant places.

AHG Badges take girls to new frontiers they never would have explored otherwise. This past fall, Troop AK1920 took on the Aviation Badge culminating in a Troop outing to a nearby airport in Anchorage thanks to an AHG Troop dad who works there as a pilot. Unit Leader, Katrina Zimmerman, said “It was very interesting to see each of those parts up close up, especially the engines!” The girls got to see a side of the aviation industry that regular passengers rarely know. Girl Members across all Program Levels moved through three stations in the tour to learn: the flight deck (a.k.a. the pilots’ office), outside the plane, and the hangar. One Tenderheart delightfully recalls, “I loved sitting on the flight deck because I felt like a ‘real’ pilot.” A Pioneer soaked in her experience saying, “They had taken off panels underneath the plane and I loved seeing what was inside the plane and learning how it worked!”

CAKE DECORATING BADGE

Cake decorating is a fun hobby that utilizes creativity and can be enjoyed any time and for any occasion. Whether it is a practice cake, a character birthday cake for a child, a pretty cake for a special friend, a holiday cake for a party, or a beautiful wedding cake: cakes can be used to honor and encourage others.

Certain badges are girl-favorites—the Cake Decorating Badge fits the bill perfectly. After all, who doesn’t like cake? The Explorers of TX2912 expertly funneled their efforts into this year’s Troop fundraiser dinner with lovely success. Their tools: sugar, flour, icing, and more icing! The Explorer Unit took on the challenge of making buttercream flowers and said it proved to be their favorite part of the whole process. Practicing with different style icing tips, the girls were able to experiment with techniques. They froze the most successful icing flowers to cut down on the preparation time for the night of the fundraiser. Troop volunteer, Jaclyn Haley, said this badge inspired some girls to dream up “grand plans for making birthday cakes and other desserts for their families.” Alaina took the gingerbread portion of the badge to the next level by creating her own version of confectionary Girl Members, a way to channel her creative side into the project.

This issue, AHG is excited to shine a light on Santa Clara Church in Eugene, OR, home to OR0001. Charter Representative Wes Wright and Troop Coordinator Cheryl Porter reflect on nine years of chartering an AHG Troop at their church and the significant impact AHG has had on their faith community.

ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPACTFUL FORCE IN THE WELL-BEING OF AN AHG TROOP IS THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION.

Every Troop is owned by a Charter Organization, which is typically a church, school, or similarly-aligned Christian organization. Without the support of their Charter Organization, an AHG Troop would not exist. When the Charter Organization and Charter Representative are involved beyond simply providing meeting space, the AHG Ministry can have an incredible impact on the outreach of the organization.

WHY DID YOUR CHURCH DECIDE TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

We had been looking for ways to build values into the lives of young ladies, hoping to instill a sense of their identity in Christ through a wholistic way to teach them a variety of skills from a Christian worldview. Someone suggested we look into American Heritage Girls. About that same time a group of women from a neighboring church introduced themselves to us as they were looking for a chartering organization for a new Troop. This happy providence resulted in Eugene’s very first AHG Troop—OR0001!

HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR CHURCH HAD AN AHG TROOP?

We began in 2015 and are now finishing up our ninth year.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GROWTH IN YOUR YOUTH/FAMILY/WOMEN’S MINISTRY PROGRAMMING SINCE CHARTERING AN AHG TROOP?

It is a particular joy to see these young ladies growing in mind, body, and spirit. They are learning vital skills to help them in life. Regular Troop activities and badgework is creating real value in our church and in other churches, as we produce willing and capable servants. Their willingness to serve in so many areas from planting trees with the Army Corps of Engineers, to Operation Christmas Child, and collecting toys, clothing, and making blankets for Bags of Hope (a ministry to at-risk children), along with other efforts to make our community better makes a very real impact.

Troop chose to “reverse tithe” (giving 90%, keeping 10% for programming) and were able to build one of nearly 100 “Sheds of Hope” to help families begin the rebuilding process of the disaster. Along with this one-time effort, the Troop regularly serves alongside us in providing Thanksgiving Food Boxes through One Hope, and back to school backpacks filled with school supplies, shoes, and socks for those in need.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER POTENTIAL CHARTER ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

In the words of our fearless Troop Coordinator, Cheryl Porter: “Pray! Support! Pray! The Charter Organization makes the final decisions on conflicts and issues related to doctrine, registration, finances. Abide by the AHG Statement of Faith and stand strong in the Lord. In these days of anything goes, you will have a struggle to find qualified volunteers who live what they say they believe. Stay strong and the Lord will provide what He needs for the Troop to be successful in reaching young girls for Christ.

“The world is after the hearts, minds, and bodies of our young girls. Count the cost and prayerfully consider the calling you have to engage in this warfare. It is more than a fun activity for girls to participate in. This is part of the battle [to keep] their hearts and minds for the Lord. Your commitment and follow through may be the saving grace for girls in your care. Stay strong in the Lord and never give up ground to the enemy. He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4, NIV).”

HOW ELSE HAS AHG AFFECTED YOUR ORGANIZATION’S MINISTRY EFFORTS?

Charter Organizations serve a crucial role in the AHG Ministry, as they own and operate AHG Troops. Though volunteers implement the AHG Program, the Charter Organization is able to customize their AHG Troop to best accomplish their ministry goals.

The relationship between a Charter Organization and its Troop is designed to be a partnership. As a ministry partner, the AHG Troop serves as an extension of the Charter Organization. AHG values the role of the Charter Organization in the AHG Ministry as they are the “owners” of their Troop.

The Holiday Farm Fire destroyed nearly 175,000 acres of dense forest and hundreds of homes along with several small communities. Our AHG Troop was part of a large ministry effort to help affected families. The Troop has always tithed their fundraising to a worthy mission effort, but, in 2020-2021, the

INTRODUCING THE 2024-2025 PROGRAM YEAR THEME

The world created by God is full of awe and wonder. It is truly a gift from Him to observe the world around us through our senses and abilities, seeing it through His EYES as followers of Christ Jesus. A girl who discovers the depth of Jesus Christ’s love and interacts with His creation can testify of God’s glory in many ways. She can be in nature and see His handiwork, observe the intricate details of life under a microscope, witness someone’s heart transform as they accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, lead and cast a God-given VISION, and perceive how her heavenly and earthly citizenship collide to advocate and serve others. All these ways enable God to speak to the EYES of her heart and help her know the hope that only comes from Him.

A VISION FOR THE PROGRAM YEAR

According to the Oxford Dictionary, “VISION” means “the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination and wisdom.” Ephesians 1:18, NIV says, “I pray that the EYES of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,”.

This Program Year’s Theme—VISION—is about looking through the corrective lens provided by God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to explore what it means to have a Biblical Worldview. Young women today are growing up amidst a culture of confusion and fear—they’re struggling to find their value, place, and innermost identity. American Heritage Girls recognizes these challenges and strives to support families and churches nationwide by providing a nurturing, safe, and Holy Spirit-filled space where girls can discover who they are and Whose they are.

A VISION FOR SOMETHING NEW

In 1995, Patti Garibay welcomed a group of parents to gather around her kitchen table and discuss what was next for their girls. Knowing they couldn’t continue with their beloved scouting organization after God was made “optional” in the Promise, it was time to step out in faith, trust in God, and develop a new kind of scout-type experience for their girls. Patti felt God’s tug on her heart and with the support of her family and friends, she saw this incredible VISION through. Nearly 30 years later, girls, families, and communities nationwide are still enjoying the fruits of this VISIONary, and kingdom-building labor.

But Patti’s story is not one of unwavering confidence or instant success. Patti’s story is AHG’s story—she was not called because she was equipped; she was equipped because she was called. God has a VISION and a calling in place for each and every one of His children. American Heritage Girls is committed to leading girls to discover the EYES of their heart, SEE the world around them through “Godly goggles”, and discover the plan God has in store. This commitment to shaping a girl’s Biblical Worldview through faith, service, and fun is what sets AHG apart from other youth-serving organizations.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE MINISTRY

American Heritage Girls is preparing the way for exponential growth. In 2023, the ministry’s National Board of Trustees set the goal to double membership by 2025—two years to reach 100,000 members. By 2035, AHG is determined to see one million members. This goal was not set as a financial incentive or a program awareness campaign; rather, it was established to bring the gospel to more girls and families in a time where Christ’s love, mercy, and compassion are so desperately needed.

The coming years will bring much change to the ministry, allowing for Troop growth opportunities, robust staffing abilities, increased curriculum and resource creation to better equip

parents and volunteers, and more. But one key premise will always remain the same—the American Heritage Girls Ministry exists for God, because of God. Without the VISION and the calling He placed on Patti’s heart, American Heritage Girls wouldn’t be here, nationwide and worldwide, coming alongside families and faith communities to build up girls to become women of integrity.

A VISION FOR EVERY GIRL

Every girl needs to know that there is a God who sees her in her high, low, good, challenging, exciting, and unpleasant life moments—and loves her at all times! This Program Year, AHG is exploring what it means to have a Biblical Worldview and to focus the EYES of a girl’s heart (her mind, will, and emotions) on Christ so that He can fulfill her longing for belonging, speak truth into her identity, and be the lens with which she views the world.

Girls will enjoy diving into Scripture and participating in service projects, badges, patches, outdoor activities, social events, and more as Troops create a welcoming environment and share the VISION with all American Heritage Girls!

As younger girls learn this big concept through fun teachings with Iris the Owl and lessons on knowing “Hoo-Who” they are, AHG hopes that they grow in the skill of pondering and planning their future with imagination—all the while walking in Godly wisdom throughout the Program Year. The richly complex, fun, and free resources provided to Troops will support girls in discovering God’s VISION for their lives so they can lead and influence their families, Troops, and communities for Him.

The most exciting part of the Program Year is the opportunity for girls to dive into Scripture and discover El Roi, the God who sees, to understand how the all-present, all-seeing, and all-knowing God is with them, sees them, knows them, and loves them! Girls will also enjoy games, crafts, activities, and learning experiences as Troops create a welcoming environment and share

the VISION with all American Heritage Girls!

The Mission of building women of integrity is an incredible charge from the Lord given to American Heritage Girls. This task is textured with victories and difficulties, giving God a chance to show His beautiful ways of blessing the ministry with faithful and capable partners. The AHG National Adult Recognitions are a small way to recognize some of these incredible people and the outstanding work they do. AHG volunteers are invested in fulfilling the Mission of AHG, and without their partnership in building women of integrity, AHG’s impact on the lives of countless girls would not exist.

Since 1996, the AHG National Adult Recognitions have grown in depth and breadth offering volunteers a framework for establishing goals while providing a tangible gift of gratitude including uniform pins, awards, and more. In response to the Lord’s call for us to honor those who serve His Kingdom faithfully, AHG strives to follow God’s leading in this by honoring the dedicated people who joyfully serve Him and His chosen. Each year, a selection committee of AHG volunteers and staff review all qualified nominees and then casts their vote for the top recipient in each award category. This year, AHG is thrilled to announce four volunteers were nominated and selected in four award categories: the Area Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award, the Unit Leader of the Year Award, the Outstanding Alumna of the Year Award, and the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.

“Mackenzie is a wonderful mentor and friend to our older Patriots and new Pioneers. I have seen Mackenzie tell our Troop girls of her own experiences when she was a PI/PA (Pioneer/Patriot) and how they can work and grow together in task and competitions. […] I think of Mackenzie as a wonderful mentor to our Troop and she displays to not only our Girl Members, but also our Adult Members, what it means to be a Woman of Integrity. She exhibits all of the AHG Creed words, but the one that sticks out the most for me is Resourceful. I have gone to Makenzie many times to help lead and teach our Troop and other Troops in our area because of the knowledge that she has that she learned while she was in AHG as a girl and now those skills are being transferred down to the current AHG girls. All of the girls in our Troop look up to Makenzie and have a deep respect and love for her. I have no idea what I would do without her as a Young Adult Member in our Troop because I know I can always depend on her selfless heart.”

The volunteer displays the love of Christ and maintains healthy relationships with the Charter Organization, Troop Board Members, Unit Leaders, Girl Members, and AHG families. They care for their community as an active citizen through service and patriotism. This volunteer contributes to the growth and development of the AHG Program and exemplifies dedication through the giving of time, talent, and creativity.

“Dr. Andrade exemplifies integrity as he mentors our Troop. He has shown compassion & respect when he met with a family whose daughter in our Troop expressed that she was struggling with her sexuality and with her relationship with her parents. Dr. Austin called an urgent meeting with the parents and Troop Coordinator to help them through this valley. He has also helped when there have been interpersonal issues amongst AHG leaders. He is really discerning when it comes to the spiritual gifts of others and how to use them in our ministry. […] He’s resourceful in finding ways to meet the dreams of AHG leadership by being our voice to the church board. He has furthered the Mission of AHG to build women of integrity by agreeing to charter AHG at our large church, resulting in one of the largest Troops in the nation.”

“[Amy] really is a walking billboard for AHG! Her excitement alone makes you want to join. When some of my friends were interested in starting a new Troop she quickly gave me the Ministry Expansion Lead volunteer’s info to share. She also helped me point some families to another Troop when our Troop wasn’t a good fit for them. […] I really can’t say enough wonderful things about Amy Perez! She’s a strong Christian woman who clearly has a heart for service. She is a fantastic asset to this ministry and for the Kingdom of God! I do hope she will be recognized for all she does, she’s made a lasting effect on me as I am sure she does with any person she meets!”

Troops have the opportunity to nominate a Unit Leader who has gone above and beyond in serving his or her Unit and living out the AHG Mission of building women of integrity. This Unit Leader displays the love of Christ through showing patience, flexibility, and meeting girls where there are developmentally. This award requires three letters of support, from one adult and two girls. Unit Leaders must be well equipped by meeting the membership requirements and completing training for their specific Unit Level.

“Kathy welcomes each girl with a warm smile and a soft voice. She makes every girl feel like they belong and that they are part of the Troop in any way that she can. She is so, very passionate about the program that she does everything she can to make the girls feel that same love and passion. We have a few girls who felt very unsure at the beginning of the year, but Kathy’s presence in the room offered them immediate comfort because she is known for her smile and her compassion, and her open ear. […] Words honestly do not do justice to the compassion, love, and loyalty Kathy has to this Troop and to AHG. She truly was born with a servant’s heart, and we are blessed beyond measure with her presence.”

MEET HANNAH ALSUP

A WOMAN OF VISION WITH A HEART FOR MEDICAL MISSIONS, CULTIVATED THROUGH HER YEARS IN AHG

American Heritage Girls’ VISION for building Godly women of integrity can hold lovely blessings at every stage of the journey, but the work in their hearts doesn’t end when they age out of the ministry. In fact, the beauty unfolds in new ways once a young woman launches into her adult season. For Hannah Alsup of OK0511, the foundational years spent in Troop life now fuel her medical missions path to lands far and near.

The Alsup family is an AHG family— Hannah’s mother Angie is the OK0511 Troop Coordinator. So, Hannah’s AHG involvement grew as she did through the years beginning as a Tenderheart and ending as a Patriot. In fact, Hannah continues to serve the same Troop as a Young Adult Member!

Hannah is part of a growing AHG population of Young Adult Members, young women who either age out of the AHG Program or have a heart to mentor girls and serve in a leadership capacity between 18 and 21 years of age. Hannah wanted to continue her Troop involvement after she graduated, but she also had a more personal reason— her younger sister is still in the program. Hannah knows “with the 10-year age gap between us, it’s important to me to be involved in her life.” Hannah completed the Young Adult Member training the first chance she could, and she now juggles a rigorous college academic schedule while maintaining her Troop leadership as best she can. This can ebb and flow for young women while they pursue their higher education or vocational training— an arduous undertaking requiring time management and a passion for discipling girls. Last year, Hannah served as the Tenderheart Assistant Unit Leader, allowing

her Troop to facilitate two-deep leadership requirements in addition to providing the Tenderheart girls with a lovely example of Godliness in the younger generation of Christian women. What does Hannah love about being both an older sister and a Young Adult Member? “It’s special to see my sister grow in her own way,” she says. AHG also just released a new patch program called the Big Sister Little Sister Patch Program, allowing for girl siblings and non-familial relationships to cultivate the special bond of sisterhood within their time as Girl Members.

Healthy leadership is very important to Hannah. She is grateful for the examples she saw in the Troop Board Members during her time as a Girl Member. During her 12 years in OK0405 (the original Edmond, OK Troop that grew into four new Troops) and OK0511, Hannah’s leadership training taught her that “it isn’t all about you. Just because someone has a position that is upfront, doesn’t make them more important than the person working hard behind the scenes as well. Leadership should be done with a servant-like attitude. When you lead ready to help others grow and thrive in an environment, that is one of the greatest ways to lead others.” Hannah leans on Christ as the ultimate example of good servant leadership. “Jesus’ ministry was never about Him and His needs. It was about seeking the lost. He knew His time wasn’t His own. This is servant leadership. It’s okay to be in the front, but the mark of a good leader is to help everyone shine in their own giftings!”

Additionally, Hannah’s passion and calling into medical missions sprang out of her time in AHG. She recalls volunteering to help with Stars & Stripes Award Recipient Hannah Johnson’s project workdays back in 2013 (fun note: Hannah Johnson was the first Stars & Stripes Award Recipient from the state of Oklahoma). Once the spark was lit, she knew her course was set! She had a new-found love of planning and organizing service projects in her Troop, and Hannah’s leaders gave her the freedom to take initiative and lead on a regular basis in this way. This also inspired Hannah to navigate her own Stars & Stripes Award journey, including what seemed like impossible obstacles during COVID-19 restrictions and challenges surrounding volunteer workdays and fundraising. She remembers with a radiant smile the many ways God saw her through, humbled her, pushed her to

think outside the box, and how her Stars & Stripes Mentor, Erin Jacobs, supported her in countless ways. Hannah’s project supported Coffee Creek Riding Center, a place that provides occupational therapy and equine-based therapy relationships for children. All in all, Hannah’s project took her above and beyond the basic requirements while also yielding a MultiTroop effort when a Tulsa-based Troop OK0339 drove over an hour to help. Her project work was completed in an astounding four days’ time! Hannah’s faith was bolstered by leaps and bounds, and the verse Proverbs 3:5-6 became a reality when she learned to trust in the Lord with all her heart and lean not on her own understanding. She gives all glory to God for her Stars & Stripes Award success!

Hannah is deeply grateful for her leadership development journey through AHG. She says a key factor was Adult Leaders with the VISION to allow girls, especially in the Pioneer (12-14 years old) and Patriot (14-18 years old) Program Levels to take on roles, fail, learn, and grow as leaders. She feels this was a key component of girl retention in her Troop in her older years, a time when many teen girls might drop out of AHG in order to pursue other activities. For Hannah, these growth opportunities breathed life into her love for compassion-based ministry and leadership—a journey on which the Lord continues to lead her.

The future looks bright for Hannah Alsup. She is currently studying Nursing at Oklahoma Christian University (OC) in Edmond, Oklahoma, a decision fueled by her love for medical missions, a beautiful spiritual gift of compassion, and the support of her instructors at Oklahoma Christian School, OK0511, her family, and Jeremie Beller, the Dean of the College of Bible at OC. She feels both her educational path and her career path are directed by the Lord and have been in process for many years. Hannah has been a part of global medical short-term mission trips as well as local medical missions efforts, and her passion only grows each time she serves. She loves the practical gift of offering life-saving care as well as the soul-saving message of Christ’s Gospel to people in need.

Hannah’s hope-filled message to current American Heritage Girls echoes the continued beauty of her own journey.

“Allow God to work through you in whatever way He’s calling you to. Be openhanded. Maybe not right now. But look down the road. Let this be a season, not a lifetime. God is calling you to something bigger than yourself.”

The Stars & Stripes Award process has also taught me a little something about personal integrity; an aspect of my character I’ve been neglecting to nurture. I had to ask myself during preparation for this project, ‘Of course I am being diligent and cheerful and hardworking around others, but am I doing so at home and on my own?’ The Lord has used this experience to angle a little mirror into my heart and remind me that my actions at home are just as reflective of my character as my actions in the world are; as a child of God, my Father is who I should be doing everything for.

Amy Perez has been an AHG volunteer since 2017 with TX1325 in Spring, TX. In 2018, she became Troop Service/Fundraiser Chair and Troop Advancement Chair, and in 2019-2020 Amy served as the Troop Coordinator, which is her current role. Amy serves as the Hometown Mentor for the Greater Houston Area Team, a position she has held since 2022.

HOW DO PROGRAM YEAR THEMES PROMOTE UNITY AMONG GIRLS, TROOPS, AREAS?

The Program Year Theme VISION fosters unity among Troops by embracing a Biblical Worldview and utilizing the corrective lenses provided by God to envision a life rooted in a supportive community. Through VISION, we unite under a common denominator as we share ideas for activities, events, crafts, and awards that strengthen our faith.

WHAT DOES THE VISION PROGRAM YEAR THEME MEAN TO YOU?

The WOVEN theme had meant a lot to the Troop this past year, after a difficult Program Year in 2022, we embraced theme and used yarn to weave a stronger bond within the Troop to help make it an amazing year. I love this year’s theme VISION, since we have created a lasting bond in the Troop, we can now see our VISION clearly for this Program Year. The theme signifies for me the ability to assist others in perceiving themselves through the corrective lenses provided by God, and to comprehend our authentic identity and perspective of the world around us. Before we can grasp our divine purpose and meaning, we must open our EYES to see Him and truly understand who we are as Christ followers.

HOW CAN TROOPS INCORPORATE THE VISION PROGRAM YEAR THEME INTO RECRUITMENT EVENTS THIS SUMMER?

The VISION theme serves as your guide to inspire greater understanding, innovation, and insight among families, so they can confidently focus on Jesus Christ as their center and purpose. By incorporating the VISION theme into recruitment events, families have the opportunity to discover the Vision and Mission at the heart of AHG and inspire them to know we are a safe space where they can feel welcomed, have a sense of belonging, and recognize how they can bring glory to God through the lasting relationships and friendships we form with each other.

WHAT ROLE DOES THE THEME PLAY IN THE TROOP PROGRAM YEAR PLANNING PROCESS?

The Program Year Theme plays a vital role in planning our Program Year. We refer to the program guide for planning our National Day of Service, and this year, we will integrate badgework and faith patches. We use devotions for prayers, badge presentations, decorations, and at the award ceremonies. I am excited to incorporate the new graphics this year!

IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT DO GIRLS ENJOY MOST ABOUT A PROGRAM YEAR THEME?

The theme of VISION is ideal for TX1325, given the Troop’s affinity for nature. The girls take pleasure in hiking and exploring, discovering various creatures such as birds, bugs, and other wildlife. When they return, they engage in discussions about their findings and pursue further research, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation. The girls are passionate about taking photographs at events and activities, using themed props to create lasting memories. They find joy in preserving these moments and revisiting them later. They love themed crafts, coloring and making cards for the nursing when visit for caroling during Christmas. They loved having a mascot, I can’t wait for them to connect with the loveable Iris the Owl.

ANY CREATIVE IDEAS TROOPS CAN PUT INTO THEIR PLANS THIS PROGRAM YEAR?

This Program Year, Troops can inject creativity into the theme by beginning each gathering with a reflection on the girls’ spiritual journeys throughout the week, guided by the lens of God’s teachings. By doing so, the girls will gain a deeper understanding of their true identity and the Biblical Worldview. Numerous AHG Program ideas, such as camping trips, hikes, geocaching, and Multi-Troop events, can be incorporated into the theme, allowing the girls to embrace AHG’s VISION and experience God’s omnipresence. An Announcement from AHG Founder & Executive Director, Patti Garibay:

As we celebrate nearly 30 years of American Heritage Girls, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey we’ve shared and the lives we’ve reached for Christ. From my kitchen table in West Chester, OH, to thousands of communities nationwide, it’s because of the Lord’s calling on this ministry that we can call hundreds of thousands of girls, parents, and volunteers part of our AHG family. In Ecclesiastes 3:1, King Solomon reminds us of life’s seasons. It is with careful prayer and consideration that I share with you today that I am entering a new season with AHG. I will be stepping down from my role as Executive Director, passing the leadership of AHG to a new woman of mighty faith, while I step into a different role. This decision, made in collaboration with the National Board of Trustees, marks a new chapter of AHG. Following the selection, one-year onboarding, and mentoring of the new Executive Director, I will continue to serve AHG as its Founder and

Ambassador. I look forward to sharing, speaking, writing, and interviewing on behalf of this blessed ministry.

Our succession plan process is underway, guided by prayer and faith in our Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord who provides. While change is inevitable, our commitment to AHG’s Mission remains steadfast—together we will continue building Godly women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country. Would you join me in prayer and preparation for this transition as a new Executive Director comes on board to shepherd the AHG Ministry to shepherd the AHG Ministry?

Anyone who grew up with a mother can tell you that the poet William Ross Wallace was right: the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world. But your mother’s influence flowed less from her position as a mother than it did from her power as a woman made in the image of God. Throughout history, the profound impact of women has been evident, not only in their roles within the family but also in their contributions to society. Their unique ability to nurture, lead, and inspire stems from a Divine design that equips them with qualities of wisdom, compassion, and resilience. This intrinsic power, reflective of God’s own nature, allows women to shape the hearts and minds of others for values and virtues that transcend time. Recognizing and empowering this God-given potential in young women is crucial for the wellbeing and future of our communities. American Heritage Girls Troops nationwide are doing just this.

As believers, we’re called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). Recognizing this, and also recognizing our need today for the unique power that women possess, the AHG Board has committed to helping as many young women as we can. As part of that, we’ve set an aggressive goal of reaching a million members by 2035. In doing so, we’re seeding a harvest that our country and our world, so desperately need: a harvest of salt and light. We are trusting the Lord that these future women of integrity will shine like stars in a darkened world, and that they will preserve it with the power they were made to possess.

Jill Rowell Troop Support Specialist Manager with a focus on New Troops

How long have you been working at AHG, Inc.? 2 years

What do you do in your position?

I support a team of Troop Support Specialists (TSS) with a primary focus on serving new Troops in their first two years. I am excited to be involved in projects to create new content to equip Troops as they begin their AHG journey.

What’s your favorite part of working at AHG?

There are so many things I love about working for AHG. Each day I look forward to supporting, encouraging, and praying with both volunteers and staff as they unite in the goal of building women of integrity. I enjoy getting to know volunteers in all 50 states and helping them find solutions to their specific challenges. I am blessed

in my position to hear amazing stories about girls who have persevered through challenges, developed leadership skills, and become more confident in their identity in Christ.

What is your favorite Bible verse? Philippians 4:6-7, ESV: ”Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Several years ago, God taught me a valuable lesson through this verse. I learned how to praise God and be thankful through a difficult journey. It has been life-changing.

What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop?

I have been an AHG volunteer for a total of 8 years. My favorite position has been Explorer Unit Leader. I love the energy and excitement of the girls in this age group. They are usually willing to try almost anything, including eating a bug to fully embrace earning the Insects Badge.

My favorite Troop activities involve anything and everything related to the outdoors—camping, hiking, nature exploration, and high-adventure activities.

Anything else you’d like to add? I began volunteering with AHG to get my daughters involved in an organization that would introduce them to a variety of activities and life skills, encourage servant leadership through community service projects, make lifelong friends, and build on their sense of adventure. I never imagined I would reap the same benefits from the AHG Ministry serving alongside them.
