BUILDING FAITH & GROWING IN GIRLHOOD

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE AHG NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE

BEHIND THE SCENES

Real Troop Life with CO2000, St. Gabriel the Archangel in Colorado Springs, CO MEET MICHELLE: AHG Alumna. FOCUS Missionary. Nurse.

Dear Reader,

Thank you for your interest in American Heritage Girls (AHG)! Since 1995, AHG has discipled girls ages 5 to 18 through time-honored, scout-type methods like badgework, outdoor adventure, and girl leadership. American Heritage Girls offers Christ-centered programming that is aligned with Catholic values. While the AHG Ministry does not claim one Christian denomination, all Charter Organizations (churches, schools, etc.) and Adult Members must adhere to a trinitarian Statement of Faith. We are proud to support Catholic families, schools, and communities in their Kingdom-building work through Troops chartered at over 250 parishes in over half of all U.S. arch/dioceses.

Everything about the AHG experience is tailored to offer girls a nurturing space to discover their identity in Christ. Just as parish youth groups are enriching the faith lives of every child in attendance, AHG is building a generation of girls after God’s own heart. We hear from Youth Ministers, parents, and Troop volunteers that girls who are involved with AHG are more engaged in the life of a parish—they’re actively participating in youth group, they’re answering the call to service in their communities, and they’re setting the tone for other young Catholics in the parish. AHG girls are developing a “sticky faith”, a Catholic upbringing that shapes their worldview well into adulthood.

As St. Catherine of Siena famously said “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” AHG gives girls the space to discover the redeeming love in Christ’s call to salvation and the opportunity to discover their vocation and set the world ablaze. We are all called to sainthood, it’s in fully and faithfully living out God’s calling that saints are made.

This special Catholic edition of AHG’s Heritage Headlines magazine highlights how Troops nationwide are challenging, celebrating, and prayerfully supporting these saints in the making. If these stories prick your heart with interest to find or start a Catholic AHG Troop, flip to the back cover for more details.

May God richly bless you in the work you do to raise up the next generation for God’s glory!

WHAT IS AHG?

American Heritage Girls (AHG) is the premier character and leadership development program for girls ages 5 to 18. Using treasured scout-like methods, like badgework, service, and camping, as a form of ministry. AHG is building women of integrity nationwide. AHG is a space where girls can grow in their faith while learning new skills, experiencing outdoor adventure, and becoming the women of integrity God created them to be.

HOW DOES AHG PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND MENTORSHIP FOR GIRLS?

AHG’s family-friendly, multi-Program Level structure means that girls ages 5 to 18 meet together as a single Troop at the same time. During Troop meetings, girls and leaders break into Units where programming is tailored to the different age groups and abilities. This structure allows for natural mentorship for younger girls and leadership opportunities for older girls.

WHY SHOULD WE ADD ANOTHER ACTIVITY TO THE FAMILY CALENDAR?

We know there is a lot on your plate. We know there’s a lot on your girl’s plate. But here’s the thing: American Heritage Girls isn’t just another meeting on your calendar. AHG is a solution to the pressure and doubt in the hearts and minds of girls 5 to 18 years old. It’s an answer to the struggle parents have in raising their daughters. Why? Because everything about AHG is rooted in Jesus. AHG isn’t simply about girl power; AHG is about girl power because of God’s power.

MEET THE AHG NCC’S NATIONAL EPISCOPAL MODERATOR

In 2015, the American Heritage Girls National Catholic Committee elected its first Episcopal Moderator, Bishop James D. Conley from the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln. His Excellency provides spiritual guidance while presiding over and representing the AHG NCC.

“I am grateful to have been asked to serve as the National Episcopal Moderator for the American Heritage Girls (AHG). It is important to have a strong, faith based organization for girls. I wish to thank AHG for the opportunity to strengthen the Catholic dimension of the program.”

INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING, AND FRIENDSHIP

FLORIDA TROOP LEARNS ABOUT THE PATRON SAINT OF AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

The AHG National Catholic Committee selected St. Kateri Tekakwitha as the patron saint of American Heritage Girls in 2014. Tampa-area Troop FL0106 (Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church) took time to study the saint, a young woman from Central New York known for her courage and first Native American to be canonized by the Catholic Church in 2012. Girls enjoyed making dolls from corn husks while learning about the saint, a craft commonly made by Northeastern Native Americans since the beginnings of corn agriculture.

LEVEL AWARD INTERSECTS WITH CATHOLIC FAITH AWARDS IN TEXAS

The AHG Program masterfully weaves together a girl’s Christian faith tradition with a variety of experiences and skills. At the heart of a Girl Member’s journey to earn each Level Award is the desire to develop her relationship with Jesus. With this in mind, each girl seeking to earn a Level Award must complete a component of the AHG Faith Awards Program. Sophia, an Explorer in TX1180 (St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish), enjoyed her Ida Scudder Level Award experience, specifically working on the Deus et Patria Mea Catholic Faith Award. The Eucharist Adoration requirement inspires reverence in the hearts of even the youngest American Heritage Girls in Catholic Troops nationwide. During Eucharistic Adoration, a girl quiets her heart and mind in prayerful reflection upon Jesus and His crucifixion and spends time in Scripture. Sophia’s sister, Daniela, a Pathfinder also loves taking part in those moments of quiet prayer. Encouraging every girl in her walk with Jesus during her Level Award journey is just part of what makes AHG the premier Christ-centered character-building organization that it is!

SERVICESTORIES

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS MARCH FOR LIFE IN WASHINGTON D.C.

American Heritage Girls and volunteers from across the U.S. braved the January chill and gathered with thousands of other pro-lifers in Washington D.C. to walk for the right to life for all human beings. The March was about an hour longer this year because of so many people! “We also loved marching with our friends, the other AHG family. I would like to see more AHG families and Troops in the March,” said Shelley, a Patriot Unit Leader from VA0711 (Blue Ridge Bible Church). Adalyn, a Tenderheart from NE0508 (St. Patrick’s Catholic Church), made the journey with her family from their mid-western home to join the march in our nation’s capital for the very first time. Adalyn said the most memorable part of the March was, “All the noises... the people cheering and chanting, the music playing from speakers, musical instruments playing, kids cheering. The sounds were so fun and encouraging and they made it easy to join in.”

AHG is committed to honoring life from conception to natural death. The Respect Life Patch recognizes any girl who participates in an event that brings attention to respecting life, or participation in a service project for an organization whose mission demonstrates a desire to respect life.

OHIO TROOP PARTNERS WITH LOCAL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CHAPTER FOR FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY

While respect for the United States flag seems to wane in our culture, AHG Troops hold a high level of reverence toward our nation’s cherished symbol. One way for Girl Members to both honor their country and serve in their community—hallmarks of the AHG Oath—is to facilitate flag ceremonies. In OH1849’s (St. Brigid Catholic Church) case, this became both educational as well as service-based when they partnered with a local Knights of Columbus Chapter to hold a flag retirement ceremony. The Girl Members learned about the somber formal ceremony of honoring and retiring the U.S. Flag with AHG Girl Members in step with local Knights of Columbus Members through each stage of the process. By doing this ceremony, the Troop served their community and country all at the same time.

LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDIING CONFIDENCE

FISHING BADGE

As you enjoy the sport of fishing, be respectful and a good steward of the environment God has given us!

NATURE & WILDLIFE BADGE

Learning about the plants and wildlife around us can provide many enjoyable hours of fun and relaxation. Conservation protects plants and animals that depend on the environment to survive. Each year, many new species of plants and animals are discovered, while others become endangered or extinct. From the microscopic to the giant, plants and animals are fascinating!

For most states, the spring season delivers warmer weather igniting chances to throw open the doors and dive into God’s amazing creation! For the Tenderhearts and Explorers of GA1917 (St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Charter), they embraced two badges from the Outdoor Skills frontier last spring— the Fishing Badge and the Nature & Wildlife Badge. Their innovative Troop leaders embraced AHG’s philosophy of overlapping to leverage the girls’ time in the fresh air, allowing these badges to work well together. Both Tenderhearts and Explorers learn best with immersive experiences. Whether it was a fishing pole or a butterfly in their hands, their imaginations came alive. The Fishing Badge allows girls to learn both methods as well as fish species and natural habitats, and the Troop spring campout provided the perfect fun for badgework. The Nature & Wildlife Badge shows girls ecosystems in their respective areas with plenty of chances to stop and smell the flowers!

OUR HERITAGE BADGE

The colonial period of the 1700s marks the beginning of our country. The pioneer period of the early 1800s marks the expansion period, as people started moving west and settling the western frontiers. Early Americans had to use their ingenuity and whatever materials were available to live and eat. People lived very differently during each of these time periods than we do now. Working on this badge will help girls learn what life was like during the early history of our country.

Immersive learning brings Girl Members the chance to experience a new concept through all their five senses. This fall, OH1436 (Camp Lebanon Retreat Center) made the most of badgework by partnering with a Pioneer Living Program in Governor Bebb Metro Park, which was also a part of their Fall Camping Trip. The Our Heritage Badge requirements easily lend themselves to immersive learning through living history programs, so this opportunity moved Girl Members Audrey, Cara, Hazel, and Samantha closer to earning the badge. During their time in the pioneer living experience, the girls learned how to start a fire with a flint stone, milled corn to make bread, prepared group meals while cooking outdoors, and cleaned around the camp. Hazel said, “Pioneers didn’t have the things we do now. It was really cool how they made food without using what we have now.” The history, life skills, and gratitude these Girl Members took away from the experience will not soon be forgotten— lifelong AHG memories!

BUILDING FAITH and GROWING IN GIRLHOOD

with AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

American Heritage Girls is a youth ministry equipping Catholic girls in discovering their vocation and establishing a life-long love of Christ.

American Heritage Girls (AHG) is a Christ-centered, girl leadership and character development program for girls ages 5 to 18. Using familiar scout-type methods, like outdoor adventure and badge work, as a form of ministry, AHG is fulfilling its mission of building women of integrity.

THE AHG PROGRAM COMES ALONGSIDE “Charter Organizations”, commonly Christian churches and schools, as a youth ministry opportunity that provides a way to raise up girls “in the way they should go”, as Proverbs 22:6 instructs. Catholic Churches and schools nationwide are turning to AHG to offer girls in their community a treasured scout-type experiences in a wholesome environment.

AHG IS ENDORSED BY SEVERAL CATHOLIC (ARCH)DIOCESES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, including the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan. “It is important to foster a culture of evangelization with the young people of our diocese, which helps them deepen their faith and share it with others. To accomplish this, we prioritize those programs that best teach our youth to be disciples of Jesus Christ, instill Christian values, and nurture Christian virtues. Among the programs the Diocese of Marquette plans to support and charter now and into the future is the American Heritage Girls,” said Most Reverend John F. Doerfler, Bishop of Marquette. Nationally, Catholic churches and schools make up about 25% of all AHG Troops. While the AHG Ministry does not claim one Christian denomination, all Charter Organizations and Adult Members must adhere to a trinitarian Statement of Faith. When volunteers, curriculum, and Charter Organizations are aligned, girls benefit from a unified program and exemplary faith lives.

“IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOSTER A CULTURE OF EVANGELIZATION WITH THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF OUR DIOCESE, WHICH HELPS THEM DEEPEN THEIR FAITH AND SHARE IT WITH OTHERS.”

– Most Reverend John F. Doerfler Bishop of Marquette

AHG OFFERS CATHOLIC GIRL MEMBERS SEVERAL OPPORTUNITIES TO DEEPEN THEIR FAITH AND WIDEN THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. The AHG Catholic Faith Awards were created for Catholic American Heritage Girls to learn more about their faith and develop a stronger relationship with Christ in a fun and hands-on manner. The AHG Catholic Faith Awards were developed for girls in each of the following Program Levels: Tenderheart (ages 6-9), Explorer (ages 9-12), Pioneer (ages 12-14), and Patriot (ages 14-18). The AHG Catholic Faith Awards, released in 2020, received the Nihil Obstat, a diocesan approval, from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, confirming that the contents of the AHG Catholic Faith Awards are in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

“WE ARE PLEASED TO OFFER THE NEW CATHOLIC FAITH AWARDS TO AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS HERE IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MILWAUKEE. As soon as they were available, we reviewed the materials, and endorsed these new Awards as a way to foster a girl’s faith development and to weave the Catholic belief and practice throughout a girl’s AHG experience, from Tenderheart to Patriot,” said Gary Pokorny, Director of Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

THE AHG CATHOLIC FAITH AWARDS, RELEASED IN 2020, RECEIVED THE NIHIL OBSTAT, A DIOCESAN APPROVAL, FROM AHG’S HOME ARCHDIOCESE, THE DIOCESE OF CINCINNATI, CONFIRMING THAT THE CONTENTS OF THE AHG CATHOLIC FAITH AWARDS ARE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

THE AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS PROGRAM AND ITS MEMBERSHIP NOT ONLY HONORS THE GIVER OF LIFE, BUT ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE RECEIVED LIFE FROM HIM. To respect life is to uphold the belief that God values and honors the dignity of every human being, no matter his or her life stage. AHG does not waver from its commitment to standing for all life, from conception until natural death. AHG is proudly, boldly, faithfully, and unapologetically pro-life. AHG sees great value in instilling life-affirming views in the next generation of women.

THE AHG PROGRAM OFFERS A SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO GIRLS who uphold the sanctity of life in all its forms. AHG created a Respect Life Patch Program in 2014 to reinforce the organization’s commitment to honoring life from conception to natural death. Girls can earn the Respect Life Patch by participating in an event that brings attention to respecting life, or by performing a service project for an organization whose mission demonstrates a desire to respect life, like pregnancy resource centers or hospices. Adult Members can also earn a Respect Life lapel pin to show their dedication to life-affirming service.

“ONE OF THE AREAS THAT ATTRACTS SO MANY GIRLS TO AHG IS OUR STRONG AFFIRMATION OF THE BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW, WHICH INCLUDES RESPECTING ALL LIFE FROM CONCEPTION TO NATURAL DEATH,” SAID PATTI GARIBAY, AHG FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. “OVER THE YEARS, AHG TROOPS HAVE SUPPORTED LIFE IN A VARIETY OF WAYS, AND WE ARE PLEASED TO OFFER THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN THIS PATCH AND DISPLAY IT ON THEIR UNIFORMS.”

EVERYTHING ABOUT THE AHG EXPERIENCE IS TAILORED TO OFFER GIRLS A NURTURING SPACE to discover their identity in Christ. Through AHG, girls are discovering who they are and Whose they are in Christ. Badge programs equip girls to learn life-skills, outdoor adventure gives them a chance to grow in resilience, and leadership opportunities give girls a chance to find their voice at a young age. American Heritage Girls is ready to come alongside Catholic parishes nationwide to empower those saints in the making.

“SO MANY ASPECTS OF MY LIFE HAVE BEEN ENRICHED BY AHG, AND I FEEL THAT I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A GREAT GIFT BY MY TIME IN IT.”

–Sister M. Elizabeth Grace Donahue, FSGM

THE CALL TO SAINTHOOD IS ENCOURAGED THROUGH DISCOVERING HER INDIVIDUAL GODGIVEN IDENTITY AND WORTH IN CHRIST. The AHG Religious Vocations Patch Program teaches each girl how to discern her vocation and dives into learning about religious vocations as a possible calling. “So many aspects of my life have been enriched by AHG, and I feel that I have been given a great gift by my time in it. The virtues that I was taught to foster in the [AHG] Creed, the [AHG] Mission to live as a woman of integrity in service, and the opportunities to learn from all different experiences, such as teaching all ages at summer camp over the years, all have changed who I am and have helped me in my religious life, as I strive to embody those virtues and make Christ’s merciful love visible in my service as a Sister,” said Sister M. Elizabeth Grace Donahue, FSGM.

IN AN EFFORT TO SUPPORT AND SUSTAIN A RAPIDLY-GROWING POPULATION OF CATHOLIC TROOPS, AHG INTRODUCED THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE (NCC) IN 2012. The mission of the AHG NCC is to support American Heritage Girls, Inc. while promoting and providing for the growth and spiritual development of its Catholic members, in fidelity to the magisterium of the Catholic Church, and to act as the liaison between AHG, Inc. and the Catholic Church. The AHG NCC is committed to shepherding Catholic Troops and empowering girls in their Catholic faith tradition. The AHG NCC’s Regional Leads connect with each Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting, helping to bridge the gap between the AHG Troop and the diocesan-offered programs, such as retreats, youth day, or day of reflection. The NCC is committed to helping strengthen existing Catholic AHG Troops and grow new Troops in the diocese. The AHG NCC selected St. Kateri Tekakwitha as the patron saint of American Heritage Girls in 2014. The NCC chose St. Kateri because of her courage and her significance as the first Native American to be canonized by the Catholic Church in 2012. More recently, the AHG NCC has developed several timely Catholic patch programs including the Year of St. Joseph Patch Program and the 100 Year Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima Patch Program. ‘In response to member excitement surrounding the USCCB Eucharistic Revival Initiative, the AHG NCC created the Eucharistic Revival Patch Program to “light the fire” in girls, sparking a love for the Lord in the Holy Eucharist.’ See page 20 for more on AHG’s Catholic-specific patch programs.

CHARTER ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT

ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH

AHG is excited to shine a light on St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, CO, home to CO2000. Charter Representative Deacon Mike McGrady, together with Troop Coordinator Wendy Morales and Vice Coordinator Cheryl Higgins, reflect on 14 years of chartering an AHG Troop at their parish and the significant impact AHG has had on their faith community. CO2000 was awarded the Sapphire Level National Honor Troop Award by AHG, Inc., indicating the Troop’s healthy, well-balanced, and exemplary status.

ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPACTFUL FORCE IN THE WELL-BEING OF AN AHG TROOP IS THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION.

Every Troop is owned by a Charter Organization, which is typically a church, school, or similarly-aligned Christian organization. Without the support of their Charter Organization, an AHG Troop would not exist. When the Charter Organization and Charter Representative are involved beyond simply providing meeting space, the AHG Ministry can have an incredible impact on the outreach of the organization.

Deacon
Mike McGrady

WHY DID YOUR CHURCH DECIDE TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

Prior to 2009, St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church was a relatively young parish and hosted a Boy Scout Troop but had few opportunities for girls or younger boys. The pastor at that time asked some families who had kids in scouts to start a Troop at St. Gabriel. At that time, a lot of Catholic and other Christian churches were divesting from Girl Scouts— the pastor preferred AHG. Seven families worked with the pastor and the Knights of Columbus to start an AHG Troop in September of 2009. More recently, St. Gabriel welcomed Trail Life USA Troop CO-1230, offering families a Christcentered scout-type experience for both girls and boys.

HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR CHURCH HAD AN AHG TROOP?

Officially founded on September 15, 2009—CO2000 has been building women of integrity for 14 years!

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GROWTH IN YOUR YOUTH/FAMILY/WOMEN’S MINISTRY PROGRAMMING SINCE CHARTERING AN AHG TROOP?

Since the founding of CO2000, the Troop has ranged in size from 20 to 75 Girl Members and has multiplied into at least two new Troops. Many times, over the years, a parent has approached the ministry team to express thanks for the opportunities their girls have been provided, through AHG: life skills (through badgework), service, leadership, and outdoor opportunities—all in an environment they were confident was Christ-centered and growing the girls. Our girls have also had opportunities they might not otherwise have had: teaching, public speaking, special FatherDaughter and Mother-Daughter events, backpacking, Troop and Multi-Troop day camp, and much more! As a Christcentered program we strive to remind each other of God’s Providence, His love through challenges, and calling on the power of prayer for strength. It has been a humbling and inspiring experience to walk with the girls and their families, as they grow and mature from Pathfinder to Patriot, and beyond!

HOW ELSE HAS AHG AFFECTED YOUR ORGANIZATION’S MINISTRY EFFORTS?

Approximately half of our girls are members of our charter, St. Gabriel the Archangel, while the other half are members of other Christian churches. It has been a blessing to have many Christian denominations represented in our Troop and to give witness to the idea that we are more alike than different. St. Gabriel is dedicated to serving the surrounding community—Catholic and otherwise—and our girls also live out that dedication, especially in the ecumenism of our service projects through organizations like Samaritan’s Purse, Compassion International, Life Network, Mercy’s Gate Food Pantry, Catholic Charities, and many others. In the last 10 years, St. Gabriel has expanded the parish campus, began hosting an annual community festival, built a classical school (Pre-K through 8th Grade), and started a Trail Life USA Troop. St. Gabriel is a highly active community and AHG Troop CO2000 is a meaningful part of that!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER POTENTIAL CHARTER ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

If you have interest from families and girls, don’t wait! Help is “an ask” away through AHG, Inc. and other local Troops. You won’t regret the adventures and growth your girls will experience!

Charter Organizations serve a crucial role in the AHG Ministry, as they own and operate AHG Troops. Though volunteers implement the AHG Program, the Charter Organization is able to customize their AHG Troop to best accomplish their ministry goals.

ALUMNASPOTLIGHT

Since 1995, the Mission of American Heritage Girls has been to build women of integrity. While the AHG Program targets those in girlhood, the sincerity and faith-filled spirit that is nurtured and grown through AHG continues as girls develop and mature into women.

Meet MICHELLE RAGUSA

Servant-hearted leader, compassionate caregiver, Christ-follower—Michelle Ragusa is an American Heritage Girl alumna building His kingdom while caring for her patients.

After years of being involved in another scouting-type organization, Michelle’s family decided to make the switch to a Cincinnati-area American Heritage Girls Troop when she was in fifth grade. Throughout her six years in OH0323, Michelle enjoyed invaluable opportunities to grow in her leadership abilities, learn new skills, and discover life-long passions—all while being surrounded by girls and adults with a heart for Christ. Outdoor adventures pushed her out of her comfort zone and led her to discover her own abilities in a whole new way. “AHG exposed me to many diverse experiences from canoeing to cooking to local and national government,” said Michelle. “Looking back, I can see how those initial exposures as a child and teenager allowed me to feel more confident in not only those areas, but also in pursuing new activities in college and as an adult.” Michelle, the 32nd Stars & Stripes Award Recipient, also credits her well-rounded experience as an American Heritage Girl as the reason she embodies authentic servantleadership.

Since its beginnings, the American Heritage Girls Program has always seen great value in giving girls the space to grow in their girlhood— experiencing their lives alongside peers and forging lifelong friendships. Just like several other American Heritage Girls families, the Ragusa family chose to homeschool Michelle, opening up the need for a place for her to socialize and

make friends with other girls her age. “I learned how to get to know and become friends with peers who were different from me in personality, upbringing, and interests.” Today, Michelle still cherishes friendships she made as an American Heritage Girl. “My best friend, Courtney, and I met in seventh grade as Pioneers in our Troop and we often fondly recall all of our shared experiences in AHG together and how much we’ve grown since that time. To this day, several of my closest friends are girls from my Troop—it has been inspiring and encouraging to see us growing throughout the years.”

Under the direction of encouraging adult leaders and alongside fellow Girl Members, Michelle discovered exciting badge programs and participated in Troop activities that gave her the chance to discover what would eventually turn into lifelong passions. “My favorite badge was the Emergency Preparedness Badge. I earned it at summer camp where the instructor set up an emergency medical simulation for us. I loved the feeling of quickly assessing a scene and helping the injured. Earning that badge is one of my earliest memories of being interested in working in the medical field,” said Michelle.

Michelle is a 2016 graduate of Walsh University, a Catholic university in North Canton, OH, with a degree in Nursing. Following her time as an undergraduate student, Michelle spent two years as a fulltime missionary with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) doing faith outreach to the women’s athletics teams at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. Today, Michelle is a Registered Nurse in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH FUTURE STARS & STRIPES AWARD CANDIDATES?

“To the girl considering earning her Stars & Stripes Award, I offer you this advice: you are not expected to do this alone, so let people help you. Yes, you are going to be called to lead and called to plan and called to serve, but this is not a project that you do by yourself. It can be intimidating to realize the amount of effort your project will require, but delegation will be your best friend. You’ll want to surround yourself with positive people who are going to support you with their words and their hands. Remember that they will also gain something positive from this experience, so while they are doing you a favor, you are giving them an opportunity to develop their skills and character as well.”

SOLENNE SANTIAGO WA0716

Benefiting Organization: Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church

Location: Bremerton, WA

Project: Wrote, produced, directed, filmed, and edited a 40-min movie about the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena

Total Supervisory Hours: 76 hours

Overall Service Hours: 1,864 hours

“We at AHG are so proud to see girls like Solenne take their Catholic faith and apply it to their lives in such a tangible way. AHG is designed to foster meaningful relationships with God and empower girls to shine the light of Christ into a world that sorely needs it.”

EXPANDING HER PROJECT’S REACH:

“Initially, this film was intended for use by Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton, Washington (the benefiting organization), represented by Fr. Derek Lappe, pastor. It would be viewed annually on the Feast of Corpus Christi and function as an educational and catechetical piece for the 500+ families that are parishioners. Upon further consideration and prayer, it was decided that this film did not have to be kept only to Our Lady Star of the Sea. Because of the nature of digital media, it has the potential for a wider reach and broader audience. So, in addition to being shared with the parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea, it will also be used by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting for the earning of their Eucharistic Adoration Patch. In this way, fellow American Heritage Girls and other members of leadership-building/scouting organizations will receive exposure to this project. Beyond this, the film will also be hosted on YouTube for viewing by the general public, so that the maximum amount of individuals will benefit from the opportunity to learn about this incredible miracle and the Catholic belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.”

AN EXCERPT FROM SOLENNE’S SPIRITUAL WALK ESSAY:

“As Pope John Paul II spoke of in his letter to artists, when men and women create, they are partaking in the work of the Creator Himself, for all things created flow from Him. I’ve found this to be particularly true as I’ve accomplished my creative work in photography and filmmaking. At the end of the day, I try to make every thing I do oriented towards His glory. And especially during my Stars & Stripes Award project, I found that God’s hand was constantly present in the process and providing for every need— from volunteers, to locations, to perfect timing. It was incredibly fulfilling to see a group of people united by the common goal of evangelization and bringing the truth of Jesus’ Presence in the Eucharist to the world. He gave me these gifts and talents, so I fully intend to use them to further His Kingdom. As I continue to pursue the work of production and digital creation, I recognize that those seeds were planted and nurtured by my Catholic faith and God’s ultimate plan for my life.”

5CURRICULA THAT ENRICH THE LIVES OF CATHOLIC GIRLS

The AHG National Catholic Committee collaborates with AHG, Inc. to produce high-quality, ageappropriate patch programs, awards, and activities for Catholic girls of all ages to complete. In addition to the rich Christ-centered curriculum AHG provides, the NCC-created materials specifically support the faith formation of Catholic girls in parishes nationwide. Through the instruction and guidance of a parent and/or member of the Troop’s leadership, like a Unit Leader or Troop Shepherd, the Catholic Faith Awards and AHG NCC Patch Programs introduce girls to the lives of the saints, Church teaching, and vocational discernment

1. EUCHARISTIC REVIVAL PATCH PROGRAM

The AHG National Catholic Committee (NCC) created the Eucharist Revival Patch to support the Church and for AHG Girl Members girls to encounter the love of Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist, and to experience the life-changing effects of the Eucharist. In this patch program, girls get to know the great love saints throughout history have had for the Eucharist by reading their words and researching Eucharistic Miracles. Through a series of engaging activities and reflective exercises, girls explore the mystery and significance of the Eucharist, its role in the Mass, and its importance in personal spiritual life. Guided by parents or Troop leaders, girls are encouraged to participate in Eucharistic Adoration, attend Mass more frequently, and develop a personal relationship with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. This program aims to ignite a lasting love for the Eucharist, fostering a lifelong commitment to the faith.

2. RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS PATCH PROGRAM

God created all of us to follow His will for each of our lives. How we follow God’s will and what He calls us to be is known as a vocation. Answering His call and living out your vocation is the best way to live the life of holiness God intends for each one of us. While there are several vocations women are called to in the Catholic Church, this patch program is meant to specifically highlight the aspects of consecrated religious life and how to discern the important call to serve the Church. The AHG NCC Religious Vocations Patch was created to engage all girls to learn about the specific vocation of religious life and the discernment of a religious vocation.

Though this patch program, girls learn the definition of ‘vocation’, discover the integral connection between prayer and discernment, and how women live out their calling through different religious vocations like becoming a nun or religious sister.

3. YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH PATCH PROGRAM

Pope Francis, in his apostolic letter, Patris Corde, dedicated the 2020-2021 liturgical year as the Year of St. Joseph to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the proclamation of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church. The AHG NCC Year of St. Joseph Patch was created to encourage all girls to learn more about St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church—his life, his virtues, and his example to all Christians. This patch program teaches girls about St. Joseph’s role in the Holy Family, his example of humility, obedience, and hard work, and his significance in Catholic tradition. Featuring age-appropriate activities, girls in every Program Level can discover how, through Joseph’s example, they too can live a life of reverence and loyalty through their obedience to God and love for others.

4. OUR LADY OF FATIMA 100TH ANNIVERSARY PATCH PROGRAM

While this patch program was originally created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, it continues to lead girls to discover the significance of the Marian Apparitions. To earn this patch, girls must become familiar with the historical accounts of the apparitions, including the children to whom Mary appeared, the message Mary shared with them, and how to pray the Fatima Novena Prayer. Girls also complete additional requirements based on their Program Level, including service projects, deeper research in the Catechism, and praying the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.

5. AHG CATHOLIC FAITH AWARDS

The AHG Catholic Faith Awards were created for Catholic American Heritage Girls to learn more about their faith and develop a stronger relationship with Christ in a fun and hands-on manner. The Catholic Faith Awards were designed for each of the AHG Program Levels to better understand the AHG Oath, Mission, and Creed. The AHG National Catholic Committee developed the Catholic Faith Award Program to be worked on each year to better comprehend the fullness of the faith. The four award requirement books, based on Program Level, advance in complexity and depth as girls progress through the AHG Program. Deus et Familia Mea guides Catholic Tenderhearts through an awareness of who they are as children of God in the family of the Catholic Church. Deus et Patria Mea allows Catholic Explorers to learn about various saints representing the United States of America. Deus et Civitas Mea guides Catholic Pioneers to examine service in their community through Sacred Scripture and Catholic Church Tradition. Femina Integritatis encourages Catholic Patriots to internalize and immerse themselves in being a Catholic Woman of Integrity. Upon completion of the award requirements, girls earn insignia to proudly display on their uniform, including pins and patches.

STAFFSCOOP

How long have you been working at AHG? 10 years

What do you do in your position?

I work closely with the U.S. arch/dioceses to build and strengthen the relations between AHG and the Catholic Church, to help start new AHG Troops, and serve on the AHG National Catholic Committee (NCC) as the Staff Liaison, helping the NCC accomplish all their goals.

What’s your favorite part of working at AHG?

I love bringing the AHG Ministry to Catholics across the country because I know the girls and their families faith will grow exponentially through the AHG Ministry. It is also an honor to work alongside people who share the love of our Lord.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

“See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

–James 2:24, NABRE

What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop?

I enjoy being part of a like-minded community and watching the girls and families grow in their faith. Many of the parents become life-long friends,

supporting each other through our faith journey.

Anything else you’d like to add?

When I started an AHG Troop at our parish in 2009, I had no idea of the journey God was preparing to unveil. My daughter and I developed life-long friendships. Through the many activities we planned and participated in with the Troop, we walked alongside of other God-filled men and women, sharing a common goal, to raise daughters who will always love and serve the Lord.
