THE SOARIN’ STAR

Editor's Note: Happy New Year Kir-bees! We hope you had a restful winter break! We know December and January have both been hectic months, but hopefully, everyone has been keeping safe and not been too stressed out. This is our first time making Key Club’s newsletter and we are so excited to share it with you guys!!! Jenni always puts so much work into making beautiful newsletters, and we have learned a lot about how she creates them. We had so much fun bonding with the other Key Club divisions through Conclave and our monthly DCMS. We are also incredibly proud and excited for our new LTG-elect, Charitha Gangi!!! We can’t wait to see what new and exciting ideas she will bring to D12E!!! Much Love,

A Note From Your President Hello Kirbies, Welcome to a new semester! It's a fresh start and a fresh foot forward. I hope you all did well on your finals (if you had any). Just know that it's normal to feel that online school isn't easy, and if you're struggling, I feel you! But, you've already made it this far, and I know we can get through this next semester together. I hope you all take care of your mental well-being and stay at home (I stress the latter!). Key Club is trying our best to provide you all with entertaining, safe service events. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please feel free to let us know! On another note, our one and only Vice President, Charitha Gangi, was elected as the new Lieutenant Governor for the 2021-2022 term! I am immensely proud of her, and you should be too; she's making history! Make sure to congratulate her :) As we were applying for District Contests for Club of the Year, we realized how far we've come and just how much we've achieved/improved as a community this term. I am truly blown away by everyone's efforts

♥ . It's all thanks to you, our members, that we can make our events

and fundraisers happen successfully. Thank you so much for your participation, and know that American Key Club is thriving because of people like you; we are achieving history together! We truly appreciate and care about every Kirby out there :^). I hope you all stay strong, and I hope to see you in person soon!

With love, Angela Wu

december December General Meeting

By Diana Morimoto, Freshman Representative On December 19, American held its How the Grinch Stole Christmas-themed general meeting for the month. We kicked off the event with a Key Club-favorite, a game of Kahoot. The meeting’s Kahoot tested everyone’s knowledge of the Christmas classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Kahoot, as always, was a very engaging bonding activity that, I think, was a lot of fun for everyone. Nearing the end of the meeting, our VP Charitha Gangi announced that she would be running for LTG and we are super excited to see her express her passion and dedication for Key Club!

YiFang Boba Fundraiser

From December 20 to December 26, American and Irvington High School held a boba fundraiser at YiFang Taiwan Fruit Tea. All the proceeds were donated to the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). We loved seeing our Kirbies post about their delicious boba drinks on Instagram, and we are so grateful that we were able to work with Irvington and carry out such a successful fundraiser!

recap Winter Wonderland Card-Making Event

By Darren Kuboyama, Fundraising and Activities Commissioner To start off Winter Break with a blast, American Key Club hosted a Winter Wonderland-themed service event on December 22. During this hour-long event, members wrote virtual letters through Macy’s to Santa to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Along with writing, there were stickers that could be added to make the letters look more appealing. For every letter that was written, Macy’s would donate $1 to support a new program for Make-A-Wish. This event was a simple and fun way to help kids across the nation in the spirit of giving back to the community for the Holidays. In addition to writing virtual letters, we also had a typing contest to see who is an amazing typer.

New Year's Countdown Party

By Bella Jiang, Bulletin Editor On December 30, American High School’s Key Club gathered over Zoom to close off the school year together. Reflecting on this past year, we had the choice to either write virtual letters to friends and handwritten letters to family or make a time capsule letter for our future selves with messages and resolutions. I personally opted to write a letter to my future self, sending her good vibes and my hopes for the next year. While we did this, we also watched The Cat in the Hat on Netflix together. It was quite the terrifying film. Regardless, it was very fun to watch it with the other Key Club officers and members as we all collectively commented on the scenes and characters. Overall, this event was one of my favorites of all time because it allowed me a moment to self reflect, the chance to watch The Cat in the Hat for the first time, and an hour with some pretty awesome people.

january Help Animal Conservation Research

On Sunday, 1/24, AHS partnered with Milpitas to bring you our interclub event of the month! We did a short Wild Kratts Kahoot and made accounts on ZSL Instant Wild to tag wildlife in photos.

Applying for District Contests By Jagannath Prabhakaran, Treasurer

Our club has applied for the “Most Improved Club” and “Club of the Year” awards for the District Contests this year. District Contests are a way for clubs to showcase all that they’ve done over the past term and be recognized for it. Applying for these contests was a big step for our club, as it gives us the opportunity for American High Key club to be recognized as a club that has had a true impact within our division. Our officer team has worked extremely hard to submit our portfolio, so we’re hoping for the best! AHS Key has come a long way from being the small club in D12E— and hopefully we will be recognized for it :))

December DCM By Kirti Raj, Secretary

The December DCM was one that was filled with fun and excitement for the holiday season! After having their respective division meetings, Key Clubbers from D12E, D12S, and D12W were able to bond for a whole two hours! We made teams and played many fun games, like Family Feud, and got to design our own mascot as well! It was really fun to talk to people from our neighboring divisions before Winter Break!

recap

Conclave On Saturday, December 23, Key Club held Conclave, an annual division-wide event where we elect the new LTG’s for our respective divisions. We listened to our LTG candidates’ respective speeches and waited for the delegates’ votes to be counted. Additionally, we also held our January DCM at the same meeting. Nearing the end of the meeting, we were incredibly lucky to have guest speaker Alex Drahos, Key Club’s international president, give us a speech sharing his experiences in Key Club. Moreover, he also answered lots of questions regarding his Key-Club journey, and we are grateful that he was able to attend Conclave.

MLK Day of Service Because MLK Day is the only federal holiday designed to be a national day of service that encourages all Americans to volunteer in their communities, we made cards to be placed in food bags at homeless shelters.

A Note From Our New LTG-Elect! Hello Superheroes! First and foremost, it was an honor running and speaking to you all at this year’s Conclave. If you told me three years ago that I would be elected or even run for the position of Lieutenant Governor, I would have been quite skeptical. Our club was quite small from the start of my high school career, but over the years we have flourished and made our mark in the division. That being said it is crazy that I get to represent American as the first LTG from our home club ever. As an insight, I have really large goals and expectations for the upcoming term, but I have several ideas, too! Whether you are a member, officer, or advisor, I am looking forward to working with you all to have an extremely successful year. So, don’t shy away from contacting me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns! With election season coming up, I recommend you all to take a leap of faith and apply for a position! You never know what may happen and your club (and I) will always support you :)) Good luck and I am ecstatic for the 2021-22 term!

Much Love,

LTG-elect Charitha Gangi

We, at American High School Key Club, stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement. We do not and will not tolerate racial intolerance, hate, or injustice in the space that we have created. It’s time for change.

QUARANTINE ISN’T OVER YET. STAY SAFE. Current tier assignments as of January 19th, 2021 revealed all nine Bay Area counties to be in the purple tier. As California’s stay-at-home order lifts February 1st, make effort to continue to follow proper quarantine protocols even outdoors.

Stay at home. Of course, it’s okay to take a short walk, but avoid large crowds in general and always maintain a safe distance away from others. Always wear a mask. If you do find yourself needing to stay out for a long period of time, always wear a mask. It saves lives. Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds and with soap. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Hands can carry some of the most germs. Seek care early. If you do begin to show symptoms of having contracted COVID-19, such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, get tested early.
