The conversion of chemical energy in fuel to thermal energy in the furnace is the critical first step in the operation of a steam system. Modern environmental regulations require that the combustion process be closely controlled to prevent the formation of toxic and destructive pollutants. Ever-rising fuel costs require continual attention to combustion efficiency. Emerging combustion technologies, such as the use of waste fuels and fluidized bed combustion, present opportunities for the boiler operator to help in addressing both environmental and economic concerns. Safety of the plant personnel and reliability of the steam generating system are paramount. Since boiler equipment and regulatory codes and standards are complex and changing, boiler operators must continually work to upgrade their skills and knowledge. In addition to preventing fuel-related accidents, this helps the boiler operator troubleshoot malfunctioning burner equipment and return the system to service with less effort.
