Hydraulic Pumps

OBJECTIVES • Describe the basic steps for creating fluid flow that are common to all hydraulic pumps. • Describe how hydraulic pumps are rated and distinguish the different ratings. • Distinguish between the different types of hydraulic pumps that are used in hydraulic systems. • Describe the specific actions that the different types of hydraulic pumps use to create fluid flow and pressure. • Describe the different types of variable pump controls. • Identify safety practices used during pump repair, installation, and operation. All devices that accomplish work must have a power source. For hydraulic systems, the hydraulic power source is a pump. A pump acts in the same manner as an electric generator. While an electric generator changes rotating mechanical energy into electric energy, a pump changes mechanical energy into hydraulic energy, which is the energy used in a hydraulic system. All hydraulic systems have a pump, and although there are many different types of pumps, they all accomplish the goal of moving hydraulic fluid to where it is needed to operate equipment.
