Director’s Note “Sweet are the uses of adversity…” The forest of Arden is a deceptively special place. At first glance it seems familiar enough, a realistic wood where serpents slither, lions lurk in shadows, and cold deprivation threatens the body and tests the soul. However, in As You Like It, Shakespeare’s forest of Arden takes on an extraordinary life of its own, becoming a living laboratory for the examination of the self, a challenging retreat where troubled exiles comically probe the complex depths of human nature and experience. In fact, Shakespeare takes on so many diverse themes in this swirling kaleidoscope of ideas that the viewer may become dizzy. Wayward city dwellers argue with shepherds on the virtues of courtly life over country life, clowns and fools obsess over the nature of art and the art in nature, families are shattered by treachery born of greed and inexplicable sibling resentment, and gender and sexual ambiguities abound as a cross-dressing princess wins the hearts of men and women alike. However, as Shakespeare takes us ever deeper into his forest, this cacophony of morals gradually fades into the ether like the forgotten sounds of the distant city. In Arden the minds of troubled travelers are gradually liberated from mortal struggle and are finally free to focus on the play’s central issue, romantic love. In the forest of Arden, visitors encounter hardship and struggle to be sure, but for each the most daunting challenges come from within. To win the peace and companionship they crave, our exiles must recognize and vanquish selfishness, ignorance, envy, folly, greed, resentment, and fear. This is the real challenge of Arden, that of the wilderness within.
