LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER No matter what community you’re in, there is one common love: high school sports. Nothing builds camaraderie like watching your local sports team compete. That’s why the Ames Tribune partnered with Des Moines Area Community College for The Tribune’s first-ever high school prep all star event. Nearly 120 top male and female athletes were honored for their hard work and dedication during an event that overlooked beautiful Jack Trice Stadium. Coaches, parents and other supporters cheered as each athlete was called on stage and honored for their athletic achievements. Students were engaged as Iowa State University’s volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch inspired all as she addressed the crowd. Later, all had the privilege of hearing ISU’s women’s tennis coach Armando Espinosa speak about playing sports for the right reasons. The night was filled with tasty food, fun, laughter, great speakers and way too many casts on athletes. When I started at the Tribune late 2015, I knew I wanted

to put on an event honoring local athletes. Thanks to the hard work of the Tribune’s sports editor Travis Hines and his team, the Ames Tribune staff, our partner DMACC, and our kind sponsors, VisionBank, Henkel Construction, The Ames Chamber of Commerce, Deery Brothers of Ames, Copyworks, and Draintech, we were able to make this event a reality. With so much chaos happening in the world today, it’s nice to take a step back and honor those athletes who help us escape from the daily grind of life. Thank you to all the athletes and parents who were able to attend the event. Starting new events are never easy. It takes long hours of preparation and a risk from sponsors. Please support those who helped make this event a reality. We hope this is a beginning of a long tradition of high school prep events. SCOTT ANDERSON Publisher

TOP MALE ATHLETE MARCUS COLEMAN AMES HIGH SCHOOL

The Ames senior amassed a 41-0 record in his senior season season, culminated by a 22-7 technical fall win over Southeast Polk’s Gavin Babcock to win the Class 3A state title at 170 pounds, his third-consecutive state championship. He will wrestle at Iowa State next year.

“He’s nowhere near his ceiling. I think the sky’s the limits for him.” - Ames wrestling coach Andy Fecht

TOP FEMALE ATHLETE ABBY STEPHENSON NEVADA HIGH SCHOOL

Abby Stephenson, who will play soccer at Drake, finished with 432 kills, good for seventh in Class 4A, and 4.11 kills per set and was named the Ames Tribune co-Volleyball player of the year after leading Nevada to the state tournament. “I was really lucky to have her this year, she was kind of like a team barometer.
