MARSHALLTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE Iowa Lakes grad aims at master’s degree, world-level wrestling
MCC known for popular skilled trades programs
Marshalltown Community College has become known for a variety of popular “skilled trades” programs that lead to lucrative careers in two years or less. The programs include Automotive Repair Technology, ElectroMechanical Systems Technology, Gunsmith Technology, Machine Tool Technology (Tool & Die), Utility Technician, and Welding. The Welding program is so popular that both day and evening sections are taught, and many area employers come to the MCC campus to interview students and make employment offers before the students even graduate. “All of these programs are growing in popularity because there are jobs available for graduates with both one-year and two-year degrees, and those jobs pay extremely well,” says Angie Redmond, MCC Dean of

Two-time NJCAA National Champion Alfredo “Freddie” Rodriguez has graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College, but he still has some goals to pin down. After Iowa Lakes, Rodriguez transferred to Oklahoma, then pursued his wrestling career at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, competing in the NCAA Division I wrestling championships at Madison Square Garden. At times in his life, things didn’t look bright for Rodriguez, but at Iowa Lakes, the culture – and his coach – helped make him a better man. “Coach Alesch was a caring person who wanted to see me succeed,” Rodriguez said. “It was an easy decision to come to Iowa Lakes because of him.” The college helped, too. “Not only did (Iowa Lakes) build me back, but they made me a better person than I was before,” Rodriguez said. He still has goals for his final season as a Cougar – and beyond. He wants to be the best teammate he can be to his fellow wrestlers, he wants his team to win a title, and he wants to “wrestle through every position every second I am on the mat,” keeping opponents guessing. After graduation, there’s more to accomplish. “I am looking to pursue a master’s degree in social work and be a graduate assistant coach while still competing trying to make world teams at the senior level,” Rodriguez said.
Enrollment & Student Life. “We have recent graduates making anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 in entry-level wages. And the icing on the cake is that our likeable instructors are all top-notch, so students really enjoy coming to class and learning.” The MCC Skilled Trades programs are currently accepting applicants. There will be a Machine Trades open house on Tuesday, March 21, from 5 to 7 pm. To tour the campus or apply for admission, contact the MCC Admissions Office at 641-844-5710 or email mccinfo@iavalley.edu. Prospective students can sign up online for tours or admission at MCCAdmissions.com.
ALLEN COLLEGE Allen College’s new Accelerated BSN Program
Allen College is launching a fifteen month distance learning accelerated BSN program in May 2017. Allen College chancellor Dr. Jerry Durham said that the program would be offered in a “hybrid” (also called “blended”) format that will combine learning both online and in the classroom. According to Dr. Kendra Williams-Perez, Allen College’s dean of nursing, more than a million additional nurses will be needed in the U.S. by 2022 due to retirements of nurses currently in the workforce and increasing demand for health care. Graduates of the hybrid accelerated BSN program, approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing in June 2016, will be eligible for registered nurse licensure. Students in the hybrid program will spend May through August on the Waterloo campus and then complete the last twelve months of clinical study at healthcare agencies in the Des Moines area, primarily at UnityPoint Health hospitals. Throughout the fifteen months of study, students will complete coursework online and meet with faculty face-to-face several times each semester. According to Chancellor Durham, the students enrolled in Allen College’s accelerated BSN program have high retention and graduation rates and excel in passing the RN licensure examination upon graduation. Chancellor Durham reported that Allen College offers the only accelerated BSN program in Iowa. Durham said “Our hybrid accelerated BSN program will be one of only a few hybrid pre-licensure programs in the nation. The program’s curriculum will be identical to the accelerated BSN program we have been offering in a face-to-face context on the Allen College campus in Waterloo.” Students who want a more traditional (classroom) accelerated BSN program can continue to spend their entire program of study on the Waterloo campus and complete their clinical study at hospitals and other agencies in the Waterloo area. Specializing in Health Care Education Since 1899
Mercy College of Health Sciences has been focused on health science education since 1899, and in all those decades we’ve prepared some of the most qualified healthcare professionals in their fields of study. Our roots lie in the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy; a religious community of Catholic women who were founded to serve people who suffer from poverty, sickness and lack of education, with special concern for women and children. Mercy College of Health Sciences strives to fulfill their legacy through our own witness to and promotion of the Church’s social teachings and moral principles in areas such as respect for all human life, the fostering of peace and justice, the eradication of poverty and discrimination, the development of all peoples and the growth of human culture. Over the last century, our educational programs have grown to meet the healthcare community’s needs through the establishment of educational programming in nursing (est. 1899), clinical laboratory science (est. 1956), radiologic technology (est. 1960), to name a few. In the 21st Century, we’ve continued to expand with the creation of bachelor’s degrees in healthcare administration (est. 2002), health science (est. 2009), health information management (est. 2017) and public health (est. 2017) to address the needs of healthcare employers searching for leaders with advanced knowledge and greater understanding of the complexity of healthcare delivery. We have a working relationship with Mercy Medical Center (MMC) – Des Moines, Mercy Health Network (MHN) and Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) – which allows us to stay at the forefront of the changing landscape in healthcare, ultimately helping you to be better prepared on your first day of professional practice. We also engage with many other community healthcare organizations to give you added perspective.
