AMES FORD LINCOLN
Since Ames Ford Lincoln first set up shop on the corner of Airport Road and Duff Avenue in November 2012, it has served the Ames community and more than doubled in size. Nick Johnson, General Manager and Owner with Casey Johnson, said the dealership started with 18 employees and around 140 vehicles and now manages over 60 employees and around 400 vehicles. The burgeoning car dealership offers a variety of new Ford and Lincoln models, pre-owned vehicles, a complete service department, parts, and tires. Ames Ford Lincoln competes with other dealerships with its “Best Price” policy, its pre-owned vehicle return guarantees, and their overall sales experience. Johnson said that all vehicles are priced to eliminate the need for negotiating and level the playing field for buyers. He called this the “Best Price” policy. “We put our best price up front and in writing,” Johnson said. The business also sets itself apart from the rest of the pack by insuring its pre-owned vehicles with a 7-Day Like it or Return it Policy and a 30-Day Exchange Policy. If a customer is unhappy with their vehicle purchase for any reason, they can simply return the vehicle within 7 days for a 100% refund, no questions asked. If within 30 days of purchase a customer is unhappy with the vehicle, they can apply the full purchase price to any other vehicle on the lot. Johnson said that shopping for a used vehicle is often times filled with uncertainty and stress for buyers and that Ames Ford Lincoln works hard to provide a relaxed shopping experience. Unlike some dealerships, Ames Ford Lincoln pays its Sales Consultants based on customer satisfaction instead of on commission. He explained that this practice helps ensure that Sales Consultants focus on what buyers want instead of steering them toward the most expensive cars on the lot. In regards to the Service Department, he added that Ames Ford Lincoln has the lowest dealer labor rates in the area, that all tires are sold at $5 above their cost, and that 2016 model year loaner vehicles are provided free of charge for service customers. They also have a complimentary shuttle service and provide free pick-up and drop-off. He added that it is very important for Ames Ford Lincoln to be actively involved in the community and local charities. Ames Ford Lincoln has partnered with local events like American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, St. Cecilia Gala, and started the “Wheels for Work” program in partnership with United Way providing vehicles to single parents in need of transportation.

Enjoy small plates of cheeses, charcuterie, and chocolate perfect for sharing, while you enjoy your tasting. Our Story: My name is Bethany DeVries, and I wasn’t always into running my own business. I graduated from ISU (GO CYCLONES!!) with a degree in Genetics primed with an excellent base for a career in scientific research. In fact, that’s exactly what I did: For over 15 years in Antibody and Protein Chemistry research for 2 local private companies, I researched new products for companies all over the world. I was lucky enough to travel a fair amount, researching and always learning and meeting truly wonderful people! The coincidental timing of the original owner of Della Viti wanting to sell the business in 2014, and my desire for something more is truly serendipity. If the timing had been any different…we would have both

missed our chances! With 20 years business experience, 10+ years of service experience, volunteering for a non-profit as the treasurer for 5+ years, and 25+ years as an Ames resident it was a natural step to become a part of Main Street. I get to use my analytical research tools in finding exciting and uncommon wines to my customers, and pairing them with delicious food. We have monthly tastings where we bring you fresh and new craft beer and wine, food pairings and hint: it’s the best date night ever! We have made some wonderful changes in the last few years to bring our customers much more variety and exciting new things while accentuating the comfort and laid back atmosphere we have all come to associate with DV! Della Viti is a truly a special place on Main Street Ames, and compliments the boutiques, salons, restaurants and shops. We join in the parades, sidewalk sales, Farmers Market, and Oktoberfest to name a few. I have been honored to be a part of our award winning Main Street and can’t wait for what is to come!

AMES SILVERSMITHING Founded in 1976, Ames Silversmithing is a truly unique jewelry store offering a wide selection of fine jewelry in sterling silver, gold and platinum. Located in downtown Ames, this family owned store offers perhaps the widest and finest selection of diamonds as well as precious and semi-precious stones and cultured pearls in central Iowa. Owner Gary Youngberg opened Ames Silversmithing with his wife, Karen, after attending college for two years before dropping out to pursue a career in the jewelry industry. At first, Gary taught himself how to design and create jewelry, displaying his pieces at various art fairs around the area, which eventually led to opening their own store. Originally, Gary worked in silver and semi-precious stones, producing his one-of-a-kind jewelry creations. As business grew, both Gary and Karen received their diamond training through the Gemological Institute of America, the leading gemological laboratory in the world. Soon, Gary was working in gold, platinum, diamonds as well as an extensive selection of precious and semi-precious colored gemstones. Since then, Ames Silversmithing has gone through four expansions and currently employs nine people, including both of Gary and Karen’s sons, Kirk and Kyle, Kyle’s wife Katie, long time employees Dave Anderson and Scott Sorem, as well as Katie Sutton and Isaac Prior. With the design and creative skills of Gary, Kirk, Dave, Scott and Katie, the experienced team at Ames

Silversmithing brings a wide range of ability to the design and creation processes. All Ames Silversmithing employees are trained through the Gemological Institute of America and are always happy to share their knowledge with their customers to ensure they make an intelligent, well-informed decision during the jewelry selection process. “Buying a diamond is easy,” said Gary. “Knowing what you bought is not. We encourage our customers to ask questions so they can put themselves at ease during their shopping experience” The cornerstone of Ames Silversmithing has always been to treat their customers with honesty and respect and to offer great value day in and day out while never resorting to “ mark it up to mark it down” marketing strategies so common in the jewelry industry. “We strive to offer competitive prices and our regular prices typically beat the other stores 50 to 60 percent off prices.” said Karen. Stop in today and see why Ames Silversmithing was once again voted “Best Jewelry Store in Story County” for the 16th consecutive year as well as “Best local business.” Also, be sure to visit their website, amessilversmithing.com, for a cross section of the wonderful treasures to be found at Ames best jewelry store!

MEDICAP At Medicap, you’re not just a number When people are feeling miserable from illness or injury, the last thing they want to do is to wait in line for slow, unfriendly pharmacy services in a large, cold box store. For the last 40 years, people in the Ames area have had another choice to get on the road to recovery: Medicap Pharmacy. Located at the northwest intersection of Duff and Lincoln Way, Medicap Pharmacy is locally owned and operated. Medicap’s knowledgeable pharmacist Stephanie McCollom and her staff offer dependable service by taking the time to get to know the unique health care needs of local customers through comprehensive profiles and reviews of each medication. Medicap carries a variety of over-the-counter medications and supplies, including first aid supplies, cough and cold medicines, vitamins and supplements, and even greeting cards. There is also a complete selection of home health care products like knee, ankle, back and wrist braces and carpal tunnel wrist supports. They have supplies for wound care, incontinence, and TED stockings. If something isn’t in stock, the staff can special order it and most will be available the next day. Another option available is to special order an item for overnight delivery. Medicap’s fast, friendly service includes compounded prescriptions and special delivery devices from solutions and sprays to sticks and patches. Additionally, Medicap Pharmacy offers vaccinations for seasonal flu, pneumonia and shingles as well as tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis and hepatitis. Diabetes education, services, and supplies are also on hand at Medicap with counseling, A1C screenings, and Dr. Comfort Therapeutic shoes and inserts. Because convenience matters, there is a drive-through window at Medicap Pharmacy. Some days getting to the store at 105 Lincoln Way might be even more difficult than other days. That’s why they offer FREE delivery service in Ames and to the ISU campus. Want to save time? Medicap Pharmacy can sync your medication cycles to have all your prescriptions refilled at the same time each month. Another convenience option is the daily dose medication pack. This is designed to help ensure the right medications at the right time. Each package includes a detailed description of the patient’s name and pharmacy contact information. Each pack is clearly labeled for correct dosing at morning, noon, evening or bedtime which is one less--but very important--stressful detail to manage. Quality care means that you get the prescriptions and medications you need, along with the personal care and attention you deserve. Medicap accepts most major insurance plans including most Medicare Part D plans, and transferring prescriptions to Medicap is easy. Just stop in the store or call, and they will handle the rest. Medicap Pharmacy is open Monday-Friday 8 am – 6 pm and Saturday 9-1 pm. For more information, call 515-232-1653 or visit www.medicap.com/ames. JULY 31, 2016

OUR OUTDOOR ENVISIONS STORY
The name, Outdoor Envisions, is new, the business is not. Formerly KCI Landscape Supply, this business has been in Ames for over 30 years. KCI started in construction and then switched to the sale of landscape products Iowa. The owner, Jon Banwart, started selling Railroad Ties, Treated Timbers and Oak Mulch. Then, in the late 1980’s Segmental Retaining Wall Blocks and Concrete Pavers became popular and the “Hardscape” Industry began to see tremendous growth. In the spring of 1990, Jon hired a college student named Jeff Westberg. Pursuing a degree in Animal Science at ISU, Jeff was looking for something “different” for his last summer before graduating. Jeff enjoyed learning about the hardscape business and he and Jon began a great working relationship. In May of 1991 Jeff graduated and took a job in his field of study. Although the job is what he had gone to college for Jeff wasn’t satisfied with what he was doing. That fall, Jon offered Jeff a position managing KCI. Moving forward through the next 25 years Jeff married his wife Annette and had two children, Wyatt and Kylie. Jeff took on more and more responsibilities with the business and, as soon as they were old enough, Wyatt and Kylie had summer jobs there as well. This allowed Jon and his wife to focus on their other businesses.
JULY 31, 2016
In 2015 Jeff’s family purchased KCI and made the change to Outdoor Envisions. Relationships with past customers and suppliers would continue to be greatly valued and the opportunity to grow new relationships would be embraced. Now, with the name Outdoor Envisions, a new logo and the slogan, “Our aim is to supply all of your hardscape & hearth needs!” Jeff’s family is continuing to provide Ames and Central Iowa the finest Hardscape and Hearth supplies available. They continue to handle brands such as Keystone Retaining Walls, Borgert Concrete Products and Napoleon Fireplaces and many Mulches, Decorative Rocks & Boulders and Soils & Compost. Outdoor Envisions has added products from Rochester Concrete Products, Midland Stone and a large selection of Limestone Edging, Wall Stone, Flagstone & Outcropping Stone. Whether known as Outdoor Envisions or KCI, Jeff and his staff still load or deliver hardscape materials, have the skills to help do-it-yourselfers finish a project and have a terrific network of professional landscape contractors they can recommend to install any of your landscape needs. Please visit their new website, www.OutdoorEnvisions.com, check them out on Facebook or stop by 201 Freel Dr to say “Hi”, enjoy a bag of popcorn and see the changes inside and out!

BRICK CITY GRILL After spending roughly 20 years in the restaurant industry working for other people, Jason Mikkelsen felt it was time to be his own boss. And if he was going to open his own business, he knew Ames was the only place to do it. “I just got tired of working for everyone else, and I wanted to kind of do my own thing, and put all the work in for myself,” Mikkelsen said. “(Ames) was obvious. Over the years, I’ve put some roots down here in Ames, with friends and family, but also with work relationships.” Brick City Grill opened in May 2013 at 2704 Stange Road in North Ames. Going in, Mikkelsen said that location played a huge part in his business vision. He wanted that “sports bar” atmosphere, with deals for college students, but he wanted to be able to attract families as well. With sports bars being a common concept -- especially in a town with a Division 1A collegiate athletic program -- Mikkelsen said he knew he had to separate himself from the pack. One of the first areas he looked at was the burgers, which in 2014 were awarded as the best in the state by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and in 2016 were awarded the Best of Story County. “You can go to any bar and get a Miller Lite or a Bud Light;

that doesn’t really set you apart. What sets you apart is the food,” Mikkelsen said. “We’re trying to be known as a place to go to get a good burger; I mean we have other items as well, but that’s kind of the driving force behind the business.” Aside from the burgers, Brick City Grill also boasts a wide selection of local craft beers and a full gluten-free menu. Mikkelsen said he attributes the success of Brick City Grill to good old fashioned hard work, and ensuring that everything is done the right way rather than the easy way. As someone who has spent over two decades working in the foodservice industry, he knows the failure rate of new restaurants. “Some owners just own the business and they don’t really work there. They’re not making sure the business is run the right way,” Mikkelsen said. Now, three years after it opened, Brick City continues to be a hotspot for Ames families and ISU students alike, and though Mikkelsen said he will not change a formula that works, he said he is always looking to add new items or features that will continue to separate Brick City Grill from the rest of the pack. “We’re always experimenting with different food items; some are basic and some are just off the wall,” Mikkelsen said.

THE SPORTS PAGE BAR AND GRILL Ames now has a new restaurant in town. The Sports Page Bar and Grill opened in July at 3720 Lincoln Way in west Ames, offering food, a full bar, and plenty of sports enjoyment. Not to be confused with a former North Grand Mall sporting goods store of the same name, this Sports Page is owned by Joe Cain and Jim Bird, who also have locations in Fort Dodge and Spencer. Cain and Bird had long hoped to locate in Ames, and are especially excited to bring a new business to the west side of town. When Wallaby’s moved to Somerset, they looked to move in; however renovations were cost prohibitive. So they built. The new restaurant features 18 televisions, including one that is a whopping 15’x9” across. There is also a scoreboard and a “ticker tape” that runs continually, making scores from every sport available to patrons. Cain and Bird also operate two other Fort Dodge restaurants, Mineral City and Olde Boston’s. When creating the Ames Sports Page menu, they included customer favorites from all their other restaurants, including one sure-to-be popular item, the Cheeseballer, a burger with cheddar jack cheese, ranch dressing, and cheese balls on a home-made bun. The menu is tailored to provide fast service, especially in consideration of the lunch-time crowd. A soup and sandwich option is always available and an array of pasta salads are already proving to be popular with Ames diners. The full menu ranges from sandwiches, to burgers, chicken, and wraps, with appetizers to start and desserts to finish. In addition, there are 20 kinds of beer on tap, including a rotat-

ing selection of local craft beers. The bar also features an assortment of Mules, including their number-one seller, the Georgia Peach. The House Drink is a Bloody Mary prepared with JamesonS Irish Whiskey rather than vodka for a new twist to an old favorite. Manager Kalli Roberts has been with Cain and Bird for years and now finds herself calling Ames home. She began as a server 18 years ago and has since managed both other Sports Page locations. She is excited to take charge at the Ames location and for her family to become a part of this community. Roberts employs 55 people at the Sports Page, and says her number one goal is for restaurant patrons to receive fast and friendly service. As an experienced food service manager, she’s committed to making the restaurant as convenient as possible, for diners as well as employees. “We really appreciate the patience everyone has shown towards us as we get things going in these opening weeks,” said Roberts. “We are really happy to be here, and very thankful.” The Sports Page will undoubtedly be a hot spot for ISU games, and the décor in the restaurant is a reflection of their love of the Cyclones. However, like many Iowans, the Sports Page is a house divided, with one owner graduating from The University of Iowa and the other from ISU. Whatever team you root for, and whatever sport you follow, the Sports Page will gladly accommodate, in a fun and friendly atmosphere, every day from 11am until all the fans have gone home.

OUR BETHSEDA STORY LUTHERAN CHURCH We are Bethesda, Church of the Living Water. Flooded by God’s grace, we strive to proclaim God’s nourishing love as we seek to, “Gather all people into a living relationship with Jesus Christ; Grow as disciples through worship, prayer, and study of God’s Word; and Go into the world to share the Gospel in word and deed.” That is our mission statement. We seek to focus on the grace of God; that wonderful, powerful, undying love that we can’t help but give in to as we seek to share that same love with others. Do we do it well all the time? No. We are a congregation of imperfect people who seek to be changed by the perfect love of God. When we fail, we seek forgiveness from God and we strive once again to live out the life of grace, mercy, healing, and forgiveness God has called us to. We’d love for you to be a part of this movement, for the world could certainly use this perfect love shared with all people. We are a congregation that has opportunities for all people. We invite you to get connected to the wealth of ministries at Bethesda, and make a difference in our congregation, city, state, country, and even globally.
JULY 31, 2016
Just some of these opportunities include: the Bethesda Clothing Closet, Bethesda Community Food Pantry, Bethesda-Tanzania Ministry, Caring Ministries (prayer shawls, food and fellowship), CROP Walk for Hunger, and Lutheran World Relief. We work together in large and small groups, of all ages, interests and talents. Connect with us as we worship on Saturdays at 5:30 pm (casual contemporary) and Sundays at 9 am (traditional). We seek to be one in the Body of Christ, and share in Holy Communion every week. Whether you are new to the faith, exploring but not sure what you believe, or a lifelong Christian, there is a place for you at Bethesda! We come together not to show how we all have it together, but precisely because we all struggle to live the life God intends for us and to trust the grace God has freely given us. We need each other to believe and share in this wonderful gift of life and love, and we’d love to walk this journey with you. Visit us for worship, and check us out at www.bethesdanet.org, today!

PEARLE VISION EXPRESS On May 6, 1983 Shari Albee opened the Pearle Vision Ames store in North Grand Mall. A few months later Dr. Curtis Broek became the independent Doctor of Optometry next door to Pearle Vision. Fast forward 33 years and you will see the current location in the Ames Somerset area, at 2634 Stange Road. We have a total of 4 independent Doctors of Optometry. Dr. Dennis Haugland joined the practice in 1992. Dr. Melissa Kyler joined in 2008, and Dr. John Broek came aboard in 2015. The optometrists are qualified to do primary all optometric care and therapeutic optometry. This will include contact lens exams/fittings, surgical co-management, management of eye diseases, ocular diseases-diabetes and glaucoma, and pediatric optometry. These 4 professionals have a combined experience of over 65 years. Each doctor spent a minimum of 4 years in undergraduate studies and 4 years of graduate optometric studies. Each doctor attends required continuing education seminars at least once a year. Why come to the doctors at Pearle Vision? Not only do they perform the above mentioned services but your chosen doctor will perform each step of your eye exam and will be the one to discuss your concerns and answer your questions. This is one major fact that gets the most rave reviews from pa-

tients. There are no techs, just you and the doctor. Although the optometric practice and optical sales portion of the business are 2 different entities, both participate in many insurance plans. Please contact us to see if we accept your insurance plan. Technology has changed, products have changed and although much has changed in the 30+ years since Pearle Vision first opened its doors in Ames, the basics remain the same: We are here to serve our customers to the best of our ability; we appreciate each and every customer that has come through our doors; we do not take your business for granted; and we work hard to give our valued customers the best service and experience possible. The opticians alone have a combined total of over 85 years of experience. That’s more experience than any of our competitors. We continue to learn new things through our continuing education programs several times a year. DON’T FORGET that regardless of where you have your eye exam performed you may still come in to have our opticians help you select the proper eyewear. We are the experts that can troubleshoot previous problems so that you can end up with that absolutely perfect pair of glasses. We also have an in store lab and can make glasses immediately, in many cases.

DEERY BROTHERS In today’s world, the idea of buying a car has changed. No longer live the days of driving for hours on end to shop different brands, becoming acquainted with dealerships of all shapes and sizes. As a consumer, you no longer have to worry about wasting precious weekend hours “shopping” dealership to dealership on a hot Saturday afternoon, in and out of each store just long enough to find that when you return to your vehicle each time, it has increased back to its internal scorching temp of ouch! my leg just stuck to the seat again. Let’s be honest here, things have changed. There are some dealerships out there that have still yet to realize this. Surprised? Probably not. The “car business” has had a bad rap over the years because things were much different before the cultivation of our digital age. There were no means to call around to dealers in your area for information about specific vehicles you found online. There were no price quotes being sent from a dealership’s internet department. And most importantly, there was no transparency. By transparency, we mean the overwhelming amount of information available to each and every consumer in the United States. The reason that some dealerships have yet to change,

is because they are failing to realize that the new world we live in, right here in 2016, is as transparent as freshly squeegeed glass. You know what we know, and we’re here to embrace that. This year, the new Deery of Ames is committed to living in the world of our consumers. We’re here to communicate publicly and freely, here to answer questions, here to provide solutions to your automotive problems. We’re here to make sure that we build a strong and lasting relationship with each and every one of our guests, both in sales and in our service department. The real truth is, you can get a good vehicle and a good price from just about anywhere. Our goal is to provide such a level of expert service that the place you decide to purchase from and service with, is us. We are here to Create a Tradition of Service. You can find us online at DeeryAmes. com, or join our growing family on Facebook, and listen for us on Pandora Radio. We are a Family Business, looking to grow our Family. New Entrance, Larger ED In April 2016, the hospital opened a beautiful new main entrance featuring a two-story atrium, which allows in more natural light and creates a warm, welcoming space for patients and visitors. An enclosed skywalk now connects the second floor of the parking ramp to the second floor of the hospital. This also creates a canopied path on the ground level, which will open late summer 2016. An expanded Emergency Department (ED) also opened in April 2016. Mary Greeley’s ED serves approximately 28,000 patients each year. The new department is 70 percent bigger than the previous unit, providing 23 rooms, up from 14. In addition to treatment and exam rooms, there are new spaces for eye and ear, nose, throat (ENT) emergencies, a behavioral health suite, adjoining trauma rooms and a new family waiting area. Quality Recognition Mary Greeley has received a Grade ‘A’ for Patient Safety from Leapfrog Group nine times in a row – the only Iowa hospital to maintain this level of quality. In January 2016, Mary Greely was designated as a BabyFriendly hospital by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. Massachusetts-based Baby-Friendly USA is the nation’s authority for the implementation

of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Mary Greeley is the second and largest hospital in Iowa to earn this prestigious designation. Currently there are only 321 BabyFriendly hospitals in the United States. Also in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Mary Greeley was named a ‘Most Wired’ hospital in the Annual Health Care’s Most Wired survey, released by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum. According to the survey, Most Wired hospitals are using telehealth to fill gaps in care; provide services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; and expand access to medical specialists. Mary Greeley is one of only nine Iowa hospitals named to the 2016 list. Happy Birthday Mary Greeley In 2016, Mary Greeley is celebrating 100 years of providing quality health care for the residents of central Iowa. The hospital was dedicated on Sept. 24, 1916 at a ceremony attended by more than 2,000 people. Capt. Wallace Greeley, an Ames businessman and former Civil War officer, built the hospital and gave it to the city in memory of his late wife Mary, who died in 1914. EMERHOFF’S FOOTWEAR
Emerhoff’s celebrates 75 years in Ames A cornerstone of downtown Ames since 1941 is Emerhoff’s Footwear, a family-run shop dedicated to providing excellent customer service and top-quality footwear. “It’s the reason you are in retail is you do enjoy the day-today customers that you have in,” said owner Mark Peterson. Peterson said his grandfather Emerhoff Peterson first opened the store in 1941. His grandfather had worked for another shoe store and bought them out and renamed the store Emerhoff’s. The shop was originally located just west of its current location and moved over to it’s spot at 215 Main St. in 1955, expanding the building in 1975 to include both a men’s and women’s shoe section. Mark Peterson took over the store after his father, Wayne, retired in 1991, and now his son Mike serves as manager of the store, the fourth-generation of the Peterson family to work at Emerhoff’s. “We are basically men’s and women’s footwear, which includes shoes, sandals and boots in the winter,” Mark Peterson said. The shop of five employees also sells accessories including handbags, socks, polish and arch supports. While the business is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, Peterson said it still hasn’t fully sunk in that they have reached this milestone. “Not a lot of businesses make it to 75 years,” he said. For both Mark and Mike, their favorite part of their jobs is working with the customers on a daily basis. “You get to know people, and you get to know about them and you recognize them,” Mike Peterson said. “I think that’s a big part of why people come back too, is when they come in they recognize us and we recognize them and we know a lot of them by first name and know them by size and what they need.” Peterson said the personalized service they provide is what their customers enjoy most about returning to Emerhoff’s time and time again. “They enjoy coming in being able to sit down and have somebody help them instead of going somewhere where they have to search through boxes and guess what size they wear,” Peterson said. He added that as part of their work, they work with area foot doctors and physical therapists to meet the needs of their patients and ensure comfortable, correct fitting footwear. At their location on Main Street, Peterson said they have enjoyed working in downtown Ames with the variety of businesses in the area that help promote shopping local. “It’s a beautiful downtown,” he said. “It’s a unique downtown that you don’t find in very many towns anymore.”

TMJ CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
If you asked Jamie Theilen if he thought about being a roofer after high school, he would have emphatically said no. “I had no idea what I wanted to do,” he said. But in his 16 years in construction, Theilen turned a what was originally a side job with a few friends into TMJ Construction Services, a full-service company serving Story County and central Iowa that has won three-straight “Best of Story County” awards from the Ames Tribune’s readership. TMJ has its roots in the years after Theilen, co-founder Jim Martin and a friend began working construction after graduating from Ames High School. The trio began taking freelance roofing jobs after their seven-to-three work day, often working until dark. “My parents would pack up a lunch and I’d pick it up or they’d bring it to us,” he said. “Then we’d go work on buildings as soon as we could… ‘til dusk or nine.” Their side hustle continued until they were offered a job to roof seven apartment buildings and a retirement home in town, working on the job sites until nightfall. When they finished that project, they quit their day jobs, bought a trailer, loaded it with tools and started TMJ in 2002. Theilen and Martin run the company as a team, with Theilen making the bids for jobs and Martin running the

crews. However, their partnership is larger than business and friendship, as the duo became brothers-in-law in 2003. TMJ’s “bread and butter”, as Theilen describes it, is exterior building work: roofing, siding, windows and more. But the company also undertakes large projects, up to constructing entire buildings from scratch. That versatility is creating business, as the company now has 12 crews working during the summer and approximately 17 full-time employees running day-to-day operations. “We’ve grown every year,” he said. “Compared to this time last year, we’re quite a bit ahead.” Theilen believes in giving back to the community he grew up and does business in. His entire staff of secretaries and site managers are from Ames, and the company supports teams in Ames’ youth baseball and softball leagues and Ames High School’s athletics, just as local companies sponsored Theilen’s childhood Little League team. “We greatly appreciate the business we’ve received from the community and look forward to serving them for many years to come.” To get a free estimate at your home or business, call TMJ Construction Services at 515-232-1493 or visit them online at tmjconstructionservices.com.

Their goal has always been to improve not only a person’s hearing, but their everyday life. This shows in the level of service and personal attention that they give their patients. They feel service is the determining factor in purchasing a hearing aid. It can make the difference in a successful hearing aid fitting or having the hearing aids being left in a drawer. They do not want that to happen, which is why they offer free cleaning and in-shop maintenance on the hearing aids they sell for the lifetime of that hearing aid. SWEET DREAMS MATTRESS CENTER Dreams Come True with Sweet Dreams Mattress Center A few years ago, Steve Rippey and Mari Moreland Rippey decided it was time for a new mattress. After searching several stores, they felt they were just not finding the great deal that they deserved. This feeling would soon change their lives. With a business degree in marketing from ISU and years of experience in corporate management, Mari considered a leap into retail. “I knew that if I sold great products at competitive prices while providing exceptional home-town customer service, I would draw people from all over the state,” she said. “With my experience with eCommerce and marketing, I had the skills to get the message about my store to online shoppers.” Four years later, the Rippeys opened Sweet Dreams Mattress Center in downtown Nevada, on the corner of Lincoln Highway and 6th Street. It’s just eight minutes east of Ames and 30 minutes from Marshalltown, Ankeny and Story City. “I love being in the community where my family started in the early 1800’s,” said Mari. “My mom is now 92, and her caregiver drives her up to the store every day to see me. What a blessing!” The Rippeys are dealers for several mattress manufacturers, and they also purchase factory overstocks, closeouts, liquidations, overruns, current-year models, last-year models, and freight-rub mattresses by the semi-load to sell at incredible savings.

Sweet Dreams Mattress Center offers name brand mattresses outside the normal retail chain at 50% - 80% off. Some mattresses may be sold with a manufacturer’s warranty or sold as is and without warranty, but the Rippeys stand behind their products and guarantee the manufacturing of each mattress. A mattress may have a mark or be mis-stitched, but nothing that would ever compromise the integrity or manufacturing of the mattress. The in-stock inventory at Sweet Dreams Mattress Center is updated daily, and some of the prices can be thousands of dollars less than the competition’s. Sweet Dreams Mattress Center also sells box springs and foundations, structures and metal bed frames, adjustable bases, waterproof mattress protectors, fine linens, bed sets and pillows. “We are starting slow in carrying furniture,” said Mari. “We have power lift chairs, living room and bedroom furniture primarily. As we grow, we plan to increase the amount of furniture we have in the store.” Although most of their business is within a 35-mile radius, they have happy customers all over the country. Sweet Dreams Mattress Center’s inventory is online, but call (515) 215-1177 or email SweetDreamsMattressCenter@Gmail.com for more information. In addition, they can order and ship mattresses. Sweet Dreams Mattress Center is open daily. For the open hours, check the website http://www.sweetdreamsmattresscenter.com/

STORY COUNTY TREASURER
Property Tax Sale Iowa is a tax lien state, which means when property owners become delinquent on their property tax payments, the county has the legal right to sell a tax lien (sell the property tax) as a way to collect payments owed. The sale occurs annually on the 3rd Monday of June across the whole state of Iowa. Why does this sale happen? The County relies on the payment of property tax to generate revenue to fund a wide range of services that are offered to their residents such as parks, hospitals, schools, fi re & police. In the absence of property tax payments, the County government lacks the capital necessary to function. Therefore, holding an annual tax sale helps the county government get their money by auctioning” the taxes to a willing buyer. Each parcel is offered for exactly the amount of taxes, interest and cost due, plus a certificate fee. The auction process is a public event where anyone who is eligible to purchase real estate taxes may participate. In order to be eligible to bid, you must abide by the rules set forth by Iowa Code Chapter 446 and the County Treasurer’s application packet. Once the taxes are sold at THE SALE tax sale to another party, they are considered paid & the county reFOR 2016 ceives that revenue. A tax lien is WAS RECORD then placed on the property. If the BREAKING tax sale is not redeemed within the time specified by Iowa law of one year and nine months, the certificate holder has the right to start the 90 day notification process. The certificate holder must have started the 90 day process within 3 years of the original tax sale date or the certificate is cancelled. If property owner’s taxes were sold they may make a full redemption by remitting payment to the County Treasurer for the amount of delinquent tax sold at tax sale plus two percent per month which ends up in the buyer’s hands as an investment. The interest rate in Iowa is 24% per year – or 2% per month. The interest rate is not bid down at the tax sale however there is a possibility that the ownership interest of tax may be bid down. This is not your typical auction by any means, if your number comes up you either pass or buy on the property tax that is delinquent. Each year the Treasurer’s office strives to collect as many delinquent taxes as possible before the annual sale. The sale for 2016 was record breaking with the least amount of parcels. JULY 31, 2016

MOORMAN CLOTHIERS
The Moorman Clothiers story begins on April 1st, 1993 when Scott and Susan Moorman opened for business in downtown Mason City. Following Scott’s dream of owning a clothing store, Moorman Clothiers quickly became a fixture in Mason City’s retail community. On September 1st, 2005, the Moormans opened their second store in Ames after purchasing the Durlam and Durlam clothing store at 226 Main Street. A proven location and a need for a men’s clothing store with a small women’s boutique matched the Moorman Clothiers plan. Ames provided a great audience along with the close proximity to Des Moines and all of Central Iowa. Minor changes to the building and an updated variety of men’s and women’s clothing lines lead to immediate success and acceptance. Interior changes as well as a new façade to the building in 2012 have given Moorman Clothiers a strong presence in downtown Ames. Being a part of the Main Street Ames Community is vitally important to Moorman Clothiers. Downtown Ames is lucky to offer such a potpourri of businesses that cater to a large number of consumer wants and needs. A full service men’s clothing store offering men’s suiting, dress shirts and ties, as well as casual apparel, tuxedos and Big and Tall is a perfect fit for downtown Ames. Add a women’s boutique to that and it’s a match made in heaven! Customer service has always been a driving force behind the Moorman Clothiers experience. A combined 125 plus years of expertise between the 2 stores promises a proper style and superior product. Moorman Clothiers staffs a full time tailor to ensure a “custom” quality fit. Alterations are free of charge for the life of the garment. A customers complete satisfaction is our number one goal. Moorman Clothiers is a proud supporter of Cyclone athletics and prides itself on the growing relationship we have with Iowa State University. Our extensive selection of Iowa State Apparel for men and women is the finest anywhere in Iowa. We provide apparel for various sports and academic groups; we also visit fraternities to present programs about how to dress professionally. The Moorman Clothiers story continues with a strong commitment to providing the finest selection of men’s and women’s apparel. Justin Moorman, Scott and Susan’s son, joined the business in April of 2014 and will continue the high level of customer service his dad has provided for the past twenty-one years. Moorman Clothiers wants to be the only men’s and women’s store you’ll ever need!
