MLK Bridge Benefit raises $4,000 for local organizations The annual Ames Bridge Benefit raised more than $4,000 this year for ChildServe and other Ames organizations. Over the past nine years, the MLK Day service project has raised $27,000 for local organizations that benefit the community. The ChildServe Center in Ames has partnered with Story County families who have children with special healthcare needs for nearly 20 years. More than 550 area children receive a variety of specialized clinical, home and community-based services. ChildServe improves the health and wellbeing of children who have developmental delays, disabilities, chronic medical conditions, acquired injuries and other special healthcare needs.

Close to 70 players participated in the duplicate and party bridge games held at St. John’s by the Campus Episcopal Church on Monday, Jan. 23. The event is open to any bridge players in Ames and surrounding areas. Attendees donate the amount of their choice directly to the organization selected by the committee or to the local organization they choose. Special recognition is due to the Ames merchants who again supported the benefit. Hy-Vee, Fareway, Wheatsfield’s and Sam’s Club helped with donations for the luncheon, and to St. John’s Church for hosting the event. Providing prizes for the bridge games were Hickory Park, West Towne Pub, Papa Murphy’s, The Grove Café, Olde Main Brewing

Company, The Iowa Stater, Burgie’s, Café Diem, Aunt Maude’s and Brick City Grill. Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity assisted with set-up and clean up, and the Ames Woman’s Club provided extra card tables. Additionally, individual players brought soup and other food items for the noon luncheon, which helps eliminate costs for the event and allows the committee to forward all monetary contributions directly to the organizations. Committee members this year were Rebecca Hoeppner, Etha Hutchcroft, Carolyn Klaus, Ida Johnson, Linda Johnson, Jean Peterson, Phyllis Seim, Andy Terry, Marcia Thompson, Eileen Tramp and Maureen Wilt. Cheryl Binzen, Miriam Patterson and Jean Prestemon assisted with registration.

Two Ames organizations benefited from United Community School’s hard work recently. MICA and Food at First received hundreds of pounds of personal care items collected by the school. The project was called “United in Giving.” The school’s students and staff collected these items over the last two months. On Monday, Jan. 23, the Student Council students loaded the items onto a bus and personally delivered the items to MICA and Food at First. The students were given a very educational tour of each facility. Providing these items to people in need made an impact on these students. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

US Bank donates $1,500 to Emergency Residence Project US Bank recently donated a $1,500 grant to the Emergency Residence Project. Carrie Dunnwald, executive director for ERP, said the grant will be used to support the Transitional Housing program through the ERP. The Transitional Housing Program is a longer-term housing program where families with children can live for up to a year. While in the program, clients are expected to take steps towards lowering barriers to maintaining housing. This could include employment, paying off past debt, getting connected to the Section 8 Housing Voucher program, along with other goals identified by the family.

Carrie Dunnwald, left, executive director of the Emergency Residence Project receives a US Bank grant for $1,500 from Michelle Fullerton, US Bank branch manager. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

The Transitional Housing Program provided housing to 54 people from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 and has been consistently full. By providing families some time to stabilize, connecting them with the Transitional Housing

Coordinator, assisting them in addressing barriers to maintaining housing while giving they have an affordable and safe place to stay, the families are better equipped to maintain housing on their own and hopefully ending their experiences with homelessness.

Emergency Residence Project receives United Way Community Impact Grant Carrie Dunnwald, executive director of the Emergency Residence Project received a Community Impact grant for $7,700 from the United Way of Story County for shelter improvements and updates. The men’s shelter and women/family shelters within the Emergency Residence Project are in desperate need of updates. With the high turnover of shelter guests, the five bedrooms in the two shelters have provided sheltering services for more than 300 people experiencing homelessness in

the 2015-16 fiscal year alone. With this high turnover, the current beds, rooms, and furniture need to be updated to provide a clean and secure living area. At this time, there is not adequate storage either for the shelter guests’ personal belongings. In collaboration with a grant received in December 2016 from the Dennis Byrne Endowment Fund, ERP will be able to purchase 17 new bedframes and mattresses, new footlockers and dressers for both shelters along with wooden storage

cabinets for the women/ family shelter. With the ability to purchase this new furniture, we will also be repainting the bedrooms in the men’s shelter and refinishing the floors to really brighten up the bedrooms. By providing a safe, nice looking place for shelter guests, and a safe place for them to store their belongings, they will be better equipped to successfully meet their goals of securing employment, obtaining housing, and hopefully ending their experience with homelessness.

Nevada FFA attends Iowa FFA Legislative Symposium Forty Nevada FFA members attended the Iowa FFA Legislative Symposium on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The students met in the Nevada High School agriculture education classroom and then boarded the bus and traveled to the World Food Prize building in

downtown Des Moines. At the Hall of Laureates in the World Food Prize building, students listened to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, and Libby Crimmings, an ag advocate and congressional lobbyist. The students then traveled to the Iowa State Capitol

to meet legislators. Sen. Michael Breitbach provided an informative session for the students on how bills progress through committees, senate and house of representatives before going to the governor. Rep. Dave Deyoe also greeted the students

and mentioned his FFA background. Deyoe’s father, the late Dr. William Deyoe, was on the Nevada school board and was a key factor in getting an agriculture education program and FFA started in the Nevada School District.

The students also toured the congressional law library, and climbed the stairs to the top of the capitol. The students then traveled back to the World Food Prize to witness the governor signing a proclamation declaring February 18-25 as

National FFA Week in Iowa. Nevada High School agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor Kevin Cooper accompanied the students and drove the bus. More photos on page 19.

Four Nevada FFA proficiency areas advance to state

Nevada FFA will advance four FFA proficiency applications to state after district judging Feb. 2, at North Iowa High School in Buffalo Center. The FFA proficiency competition is based upon a FFA members supervised ag experience program. The SAE is an “outside” of classroom educational program that is guided by students, ag instructor, employer, and parents. The SAE can be placement, entrepreneurial, production, or agriscience research. The proficiency application forms were completed online at the National FFA website from the AET record platform.

In the application, career pathways are identified, efficiency parameters are documented, paid and unpaid hours are documented, inventories, income, resume and other information germane to the SAE. In addition, six photos with captions must be provided. “The FFA proficiency competition is an excellent format for students to document their learning, problem solving, innovation, and compete with other high school students,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor. “They also can channel their passion

and get insight on potential career areas.” Results were as follows: Hunter Anderson, diversified livestock placement/entrepreneurship gold and advance to state; Chance Steffes, ag mechanics placement gold and advance to state; Grace Francis diversified vegetable production placement/entrepreneurship gold award and advance to state; Kaitlyn Cook diversified horticulture placement/entrepreneurship silver award and state qualifier. State FFA proficiency judging is Feb. 18 at the Iowa FFA Enrichment Center.
