Gilbert ag business students learn record keeping Proper record keeping for sound decision-making can be challenging, even for those who have experience. At Gilbert High School, students in the agricultural business class are applying their skills with the goal of profitability. The Farming Game introduces students to the variability of revenue in production ag from year to year. The game simulates the hardships of operating a farm, as well as the rewards for careful business management.

Students keep cash flow summaries, net worth statements in order to calculate comparative analysis and ratios based on liquidity and solvency. Financial analysis is used by students to evaluate their simulated farming enterprises. Adjustments then can be made on choice inputs and capital acquisitions. Students will use this game to replicate many facets of business management that will transfer to success in their personal and entrepreneurial future endeavors.

Agricultural wood shop class creates flag stands Students in the RolandStory Agriculture Shop classes have been working the past few class periods on their latest challenge — to create miniature flag stands. The premise of the challenge is to allow students to problem-solve how

to arrive at solutions to common problems faced in the wood shop classes. According to Brad Taylor, high school agriculture instructor, “This activity was designed to challenge students to be able to safely and accurately drill precise angles into

hardwood in order to properly display miniature U.S. flags. “In addition, the students then had to figure out the best way of protecting the wood from drying out while retaining the natural wood appearance of the oak lumber.”

Roland-Story ag shop class ‘sails’ by challenges Students in Brad Taylor’s agricultural shop class at Roland-Story High School were recently challenged to use a 6-inch piece of a 2x4 to develop a “sail boat” that would meet the criteria of not sinking, staying upright and have a propulsion system that would move it forward.

According to Taylor, high school agriculture instructor, “This activity was designed to make students problem solve and make decisions in order to solve a problem. Just about each student was able to eventually figure out what needed to be done in order to solve the problem.”
