Volunteers are energy for ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” the final show of ACTORS Season 61, opened June 9. All ACTORS shows are staffed and performed entirely by volunteers. This diverse group has rallied to make this musical a great time for the community to watch and enjoy. ACTORS is fortunate to have a number of returning actors and support staff during the season. There are also several new cast members and support staff involved in this production. These volunteers have contributed up to hundreds of hours for the show to go on for the community of Ames. There were at least 88 volunteers involved in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” There are 24 people in the cast. They have been rehearsing four days a week for eight weeks. If you include performances, the cast is volunteering more than 7,500 hours. That does not include the time spent outside of rehearsal preparing including memorizing lines, practicing dances, and learning songs. While this is a big commitment of time, the cast will tell that they have a great time. They get to entertain, make new friends, learn a dance or a song,

and the entire process is satisfying and fun. It must be a good time, because they contribute long hours, and their only payment is the applause from the audience. The set crew estimated that nearly 300 hours were required to put up the set. That included painting a mural of the French Riviera, building balustrades from carpet tubes and painting them to look like stone, securing platforms, and hanging curtains. The set includes 133 yards of fabric salvaged from a building that was about to be torn down. This fabric was hemmed and hung as curtains that fl ank the mural and conceal the back stage area. You cannot see the show if you don’t have lights. The lighting designer and crew spent over 200 hours hanging, focusing, and putting color in the lights for the stage. Next, the lighting board had to be programmed with the light cues. Finally, the light crew arrives early every evening to start the lights and run them for the performance. The sound designer gathered the sound effects and programmed them, and the sound operator runs them for every performance.
The sound crew for the show started before many of the other technical positions so that the sound cues could be coordinated with the music. That leads us to the orchestra. “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” has a 14-piece orchestra that has contributed more than 630 hours of time. Plus, there were three piano accompanists so there was a piano player for every rehearsal: another 100 hours. Guiding the production is a set of directors, choreographers, and producers that have been working for nearly a year, getting all the pieces together for the show. The production staff contributed more than 1,400 hours over the rehearsal and production period. In addition, the publicist spent time getting the word out so that the box office volunteers could sell tickets and the ushers and house managers had audiences to take to their seats. The total number of hours estimated to stage “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ was more than 10,000 from volunteers throughout Central Iowa. The true value of these volunteer hours is the enjoyment everyone involved in the show has, and the opportunity to entertain people in the city of Ames.

While at this fun and interactive training, officers and members engaged in four workshops aimed at preparing them for their leadership positions and developing themselves personally. Led by both former and current FFA district and state offi cers, this year’s workshops focused on advocating for agriculture, connecting with stakeholders, collaborating as a team and recruiting for local chapters. FFA officers also received advice regarding their specific responsibilities within local chapters. Iowa FFA President, Zach Hamilton, said, “COLT conference
provides a chance for FFA members to learn more about their responsibility as a local leader and is a conference for members to meet and connect with state, district and other chapter officers.” COLT conference programming is designed as a two-year rotation of local leaders training. Focus areas for next year have been determined and will include agriculture literacy, time management, professionalism, and self-confidence. COLT topics are specifi cally selected to equip FFA members to be successful leaders in high school and beyond.
