Young Playwrights Initiative premiers four new plays Four playwrights from Ames will premiere their works as part of the Young Playwrights Initiative June 30 and July 1. The playwrights are Ben Siegel (We Make Time), Travis Cooper (Way Back When), Asher Suski (Big Boys), and Ben Sulzberger (Fire from the Heart of Man), all 14 to 19 years old. The plays range in length from 10 to 30 minutes, which will allow all four plays to be staged in a single evening of innovative theater at Story Theater Company’s black box theater. Sulzberger, a sophomore at the University of Iowa, is also the producer of the Young Playwrights Initiative. Sulzberger is studying cinema and creative writing and has already had a ten-minute play produced by the university. A second play, This King’s County, has been selected to receive a workshop production in the fall. In addition, Sulzberger has produced an original full-length musical. “I started the Young Playwrights Initiative because I saw the numerous opportunities available to youth interested in theater around the Ames area, and noticed that, although students could express themselves on-stage and behindthe- scenes, there was a side of theater that I felt they were missing out on, which is the pre-production side of things,”

“I feel that day was hugely beneficial to defi ning how our playwrights thought about their scripts going forward and where they are as creators in a broader sense.” Sulzberger said. “This is when the play is written, the director interprets the playwright’s words, and a production team begins to determine how to bring that

text to life.” This year, the plays were selected based on discussions among the playwrights and a shared desire to make something like this a reality. In order to explore the process of writing and developing new works, local awardwinning playwrights Taylor Sklenar and Vivian Cook led a workshop that addressed everything from earliest character development to the final stages of editing. “I feel that day was hugely benefi cial to defining how our playwrights thought about their For more, see page 3

Nevada High ag ed & FFA present to Iowa School Nutrition Managers Nevada High School Ag Ed & FFA present to Iowa School Nutrition Managers The Nevada High School Agriculture Education program and FFA chapter presented to the Iowa School Food Service Managers Conference held June 14 at the Holiday Inn Airport

in Des Moines. The presentation focused on how schools can successfully integrate local produce into the lunch program. Nevada Community Schools has been very successful in this area for the past four years. Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School

agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor, presented on the variety of produce that has been grown in the school garden, and greenhouse for the lunch program at no cost. “It was interesting to hear the crowd appear to be astonished when

they heard ‘no cost’” Cooper said. The FFA chapter has grown tomatoes, strawberries, peppers and lettuce for the lunch program. This past fall, and apple orchard was also planted to provide apples in the future. A narrative was also provided on the col-

laboration that Nevada agriculture education and FFA has with Swanson Farms. Andy and Dale Swanson have grown and donated watermelons, potatoes and sweet potatoes to the lunch program. Cooper and students have volunteered with the harvest

and transport of this produce from the Swanson Farms. Last fall, the USDA Washington, D.C., policy director of school nutrition and the Denver Regional USDA office visited the Nevada School greenhouse and produce integration on-site.
