Amnesty International will meet at 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday July 29 in the Dale Ross Board Room, Ames Public Library. We will discuss human rights issues and write letters on behalf of individuals whose human rights have been violated. The work is appropriate for high school age and older but younger children are welcome in the meeting room. Bring a laptop or write letters by hand. Roland-Story agriculture student preps for county fair Roland-Story Agriculture student and FFA member, Max Halstead has been busy this summer preparing for the 2017 Story County Fair. Max is the son of Cal and Molly Halstead of Roland and will be a senior this year at Roland-Story. According to Brad Taylor, agriculture education instructor and FFA Advisor, “Max is an excellent student and a natural born leader. He possesses much common sense and is a student that is looked up to in our Agriculture program.” Max has participated in many events and activities over his years in the program including:

Roland-Story FFA community garden Roland-Story agriculture education students and FFA members have again undertaken running a community garden with the produce being donated to the Loaves and Fishes food pantry in Story City. This is a student run enterprise in cooperation with WindField Solutions, Farm Credit Services of America, and Land O’Lakes, Inc. The garden is located on WinField Solutions property and the FFA chapter has
received donations from Key Cooperative, Land O’Lakes and FCS of America which have allowed them to purchase various seeds, construct a garden shed and other equipment to assist with the management of the garden. The garden is approximately 3.5 acres in size and has a wide variety of vegetables planted. Each week, a different set of students are in charge of the management and weeding of the garden.
Thomson hired as Habitat Store of Central Iowa operations manager Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa has hired Dan Thomson as the full-time operations manager for the Habitat Store of Central Iowa. Dan is originally from Everly, in northwest Iowa. He’s spent most of his adult life in law enforcement, but has also worked in the nonprofit sector. Dan is married and has two daughters and four grandchildren. Dan’s vision for the store is to extend the hours of the store and double its size in the near future.

Story City senior citizens’ center The senior center in Story City will serve lunch at 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday. Cost is $4. They will also have bridge and card playing from 1 to 4:30 p.m. every Friday. Both are open to anyone ages 55 and up.

Consamus and Hampton Dental Clinic raises money for Back Pack Buddies Consamus and Hampton Dental Clinic recently presented Back Pack Buddies of the Gilbert Schools with a check for $9,435.
This money was raised through an event called Smile Bright. In the months of April and May the clinic offered teeth bleaching kits for

Landus Cooperative donates $10,000 to Collins Fire and Rescue The Collins Community Fire and Rescue was recently presented with a $10,000 check from Landus Cooperative in collaboration with CoBank. The funds will support the building of a new fire station and their safety training program. With safety as one of their core values, Landus Cooperative believes supporting projects to enhance farm and agricultural safety and emergency response services. Landus Cooperative depends on the fire department during safety inspections, and year-round to keep employees, members and their families safe. Rivadeneyra, MD joins McFarland Clinic McFarland Clinic announced Hugo Rivadeneyra, MD joined the McFarland Clinic Endocrinology Department in July. Dr. Rivadeneyra completed his endocrinology fellowship at Metro Health Case Western Reserve and an internal medicine residency at Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Universidad Mayor de San Andres, La Paz, Boliva.

MICA food pantry receives $7,000 Monsanto Fund grant Monsanto employees from Ames recommended that Mid-Iowa Community Action’s Story County Emergency Food Pantry receive a $7,000 grant from the Monsanto Fund’s 2017 US Site Grants initiative. Funds from the grant will be used to support operational expenses of the Story County Emergency Food Pantry.
During the summer months’ food pantry demand is higher, as children are not in school accessing the federal free and reduced-cost meal program through schools. Local Monsanto employees are proud to support this grant and the efforts of MICA’s Story County Emergency Food Pantry to alleviate hunger.
This year, the Monsanto Fund awarded more than $1.4 million to nonprofit organizations through its US Site Grants initiative to address essential needs in rural communities. Nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have received more than $7.5 million through this program over the last five years.
