AMES QUILT GUILD: The Ames Quild Guild will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, at First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave. The meeting topic is, “Let’s Talk About YOUR Quilt” and will be presented by American Quilt Society (AQS) Certified Quilt Appraisers Charleen Richtsmeier and Valorie Bonk. In their presentation, they explain each quilt’s value based on the fabric, technique, age and type of quilting, whether it is hand-quilted, machine quilted, tied, pieced, appliqued or a mixed technique. Colo man awarded Quilt of Valor Richard Montag, 91, of Colo was awarded a Quilt of Valor at a family reunion on Aug. 12. The quilt was given by Quilt of Valor Foundation representative and quilter, Leona Montag, in recognition of Richard’s service to his country during WWII. Richard’s wife, Patty, and their six children and their families were there to honor him. According to the Quilt of Valor Foundation’s website, “The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”

As of July 31, 2017, 166,077 quilts have been awarded. Richard served in the United States Army from May 1944 to January 1948 and from January to September 1951. In 1944, at the young age of 18, Richard was inducted into the Army and was assigned to the 70th Division, Company E of the 275th Infantry Regiment, and ended up in the 3rd squad of the 3rd Platoon as second scout. For his participation in the fight against the Germans at Baerenthal, France, Richard was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Later, Richard was transferred to the Third Division in

Company K of the 15th Infantry and was involved in Army of Occupation duties. After the war, Richard was promoted to sergeant and signed up for 18 more months in the Regular Army, which he served with the U. S. Constabulary in Heidelberg, Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1948. He was later recalled to the reserves in January 1951. In addition to The Bronze Star, Richard was also awarded the European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Army of Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

CHILDREN’S AUTHOR EVENT: ‘LINES’ Ames childrens’ author Sarvinder Naberhause will launch a new book, “Lines,” that shows how lines make up a whole: a whole square, house, town, city and universe. She will give a presentation with refreshments, crafts featuring lines and how to use them and book signing to follow at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Ames Public Library Auditorium.

RUMMAGE SALE: Rummage in the Summer Event at Unity Church of Ames is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the church, 226 Ninth St., Ames. Byg achieves Distinguished Toastmaster

Jerry Byg, left, has achieved the highest level of educational achievement in Toastmasters. St. Andrews Lutheran Church awards scholarships

The Iowa T.T.T. BI group dropped off its six fourth-grade campers at the Boone YMCA Camp on Sunday, Aug. 6. They spent a fun-filled week at the camp. The group chooses as many deserving girls from the Ames/Nevada areas as possible to send to camp every summer along with all needed supplies. Nevada FFA volunteers at Iowa State Fair Twenty-four Nevada FFA members and FFA advisor Kevin Cooper volunteered at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 13. The students met at the

high school around 9 a.m. to board the bus. Several students were already at the fair with livestock projects. Fifteen students worked at the Pork Stand, and

the rest headed to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Beef Quarter stand. “The adults at both pork stand and cattlemen’s stand are always impressed with

the number of students that volunteer every year,” Cooper said. “They admire the courtesy, work ethic, and collaborative atti-

tude that our students have.” All students were provided with a free admission ticket and provided free dinner. The Nevada FFA an-

In addition, the Iowa Cattlemen will donate $50 for each volunteer from the Nevada FFA, so a check for $650 will be arriving to the school after the fair.

Roland-Story FFA members compete in Story County Fair Twenty-eight different members of the Roland-Story FFA chapter competed in the 2017 Story County Fair in Nevada. Members Nathan Faga, Jackson Sterle and Sam Skaar competed in the Pork Grilling Contestsponsored by the Story County Pork Producers and are presenting to the judges. Roland- story had three different teams

entered and the R-S team of Jacob Sterle, Brayden Lester and Max Halstead finished first in the contest. Other chapter members who participated with livestock were: Brayden Lester, Jackson Sterle, Jacob Sterle, Max Petzenhauser, Claire Petzenhauser, Matthew Hougland and Max Halstead, while 19 other FFA members from the chapter competed in

the areas of photography, agri-sciences, food and nutrition and woodworking. In addition, RolandStory participated in the livestock judging contest and finished as the third-place team (Brayden Lester, Jacob Sterle and Jackson Sterle).

Members are preparing for competition at the Iowa State Fair where livestock, photography, horticultural crops, as well as members participating in the agricultural demonstrations division where their topic will deal with DNA extraction.
