Nevada FFA receives $4,000 from the Ivan Jensen Memorial Fund The family of the late Ivan Jensen came to Nevada High School and presented $4,000 to the Nevada FFA Chapter on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Ivan Jensen was a lifetime resident and farmer in the Nevada area. Sally Jensen, Ivan’s wife of sixty-five years, was accompanied by daughter Marty Sue Stigall, and grandson Eric Jensen and presented the memorial money to the FFA chapter. Eric was a FFA member while in high school and was a state finalist in the diversified crop proficiency. Eric also attended the FFA Washington DC Leadership Conference. Unable to attend the presentation were Ivan & Sally’s sons, Ronald & Donnie Jensen. “Ivan always enjoyed reading about the Nevada FFA in the newspapers, school newsletters, and Spokesman!” said Sally Jensen. The Jensen’s included a check for $2,000 from the Jensen Farm account.

Fevold’s donate $1,000 to Nevada FFA for tractor fi x In appreciation of the Nevada High School Ag Ed program and FFA high quality workmanship, Tim and Phyllis Fevold presented the Nevada FFA with a donation of $1,000. Erik Fevold, eldest son, restored his late grandfather’s Allis Chalmers model WD tractor. The tractor was not running
and was sitting in a barn. Kevin Cooper, FFA advisor, and Erik pulled the tractor out with a winch and took it to the Nevada High School Agriculture Mechanics lab where it could be worked on. After replacing rims, battery, manifold, carburetor, and many other parts, the entire tractor
was sandblasted and painted. One last repair to the Fevold AC WD tractor was to change the oil. However, the oil plug did not want to come out, it was too tight or rusted in. After heating, tapping, and a few other attempts, the students were not able to get the plug out. Cooper decided to weld a nut onto the oil plug, but two of those
attempts failed. Then a washer was welded to the oil plug, and a nut was welded to the washer, success, it worked, whoop, whoop! “Some things you just won’t find in the textbooks,” Cooper emphasized to the students. The tractor earned a blue ribbon at the 2016 Iowa State Fair, and is now at the family farm. In
addition, the Nevada FFA also got a John Deere riding lawnmower fixed up that belonged to the grandfather, but it went to Aunt Kim’s in Memphis, Tennessee. “The AC WD really turned out well, but hard work is always a good hedge for success” added Cooper. Titan Tire provided tires at no charge for the project.

Nevada FFA participates in cattle contest A team of three Nevada High School agriculture education students and FFA members competed in the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation Extravaganza on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The event for high school students was held at the Iowa State University Hansen Center. The contest measures student knowledge of the beef cattle industry in ten different areas or stations. The stations included credit and finance, reproduction, nutrition, breeding heifers keep/cull, seedstock merchandising, industry issues and advocacy, job interview, and beef management challenge. Nevada High School students invested many hours after school, on weekends, and studying at home to prepare for what is
considered a very rigorous contest. “The Iowa Cattlemen’s Extravaganza is not for the faint of heart,”added Kevin Cooper, Nevada FFA advisor. “It calls for a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of all components of the modern beef production industry” he added. Mary Greiman, event manager asked if Cooper could be one of the contest leaders for the entire day, of which he replied, “certainly”. The Nevada team placed 14th of 27 teams competing. The contest is limited to only juniors or seniors in high school. The students and Mr.Cooper appreciated Bill Couser sharing real-time data from some of his pen close-outs. Mr.Cooper also shared data from steers and heifers he has invested in also.
