Saturday, 30 May – About Smart Living Challenge

The Swedish Institute and Munktell Science Park initiated the Smart Living Challenge in 2014, an open, international innovation competition designed to generate business opportunities and ideas to promote sustainable lifestyles in cities. In conjunction with the competition, creative workshops were also organized in 13 countries on five continents around the world. The Smart Living Challenge in 2015 continues with new countries and partners taking part in the initiative, Bosnia and Herzegovina being one of 8 countries this year.

Conference/Creative Workshop

The first Smart Living Challenge C/W held in Bosnia and Herzegovina is part of the global initiative Smart Living Challenge. The C/W aims to generate innovative solutions and projects in response to global challenges such as: climate change, overuse of natural resources, environmental degradation and overpopulated cities.

The main subject of the C/W are presentations What is the main subject of the of the natural and human resources, as well as Smart Living Challenge Conference/Creative Workshop? potentials of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the benefits of self-sustaining solutions and opportunities which can be implemented in local communities.

LENGE IN SARAJEVO

– Sunday, 31 May 2015 One of three categories (EAT - LIVE – MOVE) - The category LIVE answers the question: How can we design housing that meets the demand for both a high quality of life and reduced environmental impact? This category explores solutions for smarter homes and housing. This might involve smarter construction and renovation through the use of new materials and technology. It could also involve ideas that facilitate green energy production, consumption reduction, or solutions for interior design/decoration and recycling.

Who are the participants in Smart Living Challenge Conference/Workshop?

Participants of the first Smart Living Challenge C/W in BiH are local and foreign experts, professionals and creative minds in Bosnia and Herzegovina who are known for their activities, projects and study expertise, as well as representatives of various local government levels.

The objectives of the Smart Living Challenge Conference/Workshop?

The objective of C/W is to promote sustainable lifestyles in cities, engage and inspire citizens to be agents of change, as well as to support the development of local and global networks around sustainability and to find tools and methods for local actiontowards sustainability.

The C/W represents an effort to include Bosnia and Herzegovina in environmental rehabilitation projects.

ORGANIZERS:

Walter BIM Solutions is a Bosnian-Swedish company with a staff of 50 employees.

Currently, it is located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but in the near future there will be a Walter office opening in Stockholm, Sweden and San Francisco, United States. Walter provides solutions based on the BIM platform to architectural/construction companies. Depending on the client's needs, Walter can provide services ranging from bare digitization of the building technical drawings, creation of 3D models of the building, animation and visualization of the buildings, smart IT solutions and web systems to assist in building design and management. Furthermore, Walter offers a full spectrum of design work in construction processes (architectural ideas and projects, mechanical, electrical, structural designs, presentation and visualization of the projects, etc.). Walter adds on to these services by providing graphic and industrial design solutions. Walter's commitment is to support innovations in construction and to always strive to offer smarter, more sustainable living conditions. 1 DAY ONE

His Excellency, Mr. Fredrick Schiller, the Ambassador of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina welcomed the participants with an inspirational speech. With enthusiasm, he talked about the Swedish tradition to support start-up companies and he named few very successful ones. Mr. Fredrik Schiller emphasized the Swedish support to green solutions and smart designs, and repeatedly stressed the importance of investing in people, education and information.

His Excellency’s speech was inspiring, positive and full of supportive messages for young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mr. Schiller’s great energy was an amazing introduction for Swedish Collaborators and Local Professionals lectures!

The Organizer's idea was to create the board of the best keynote speakers in the field of smart living; therefore, we invited local experts with an impressive biographies and subjects related to the focus of the Conference interest!

Birgitta Tennander Pedagogics Senior Project Manager at Swedish Institute

Birgitta is working with projects on sustainability and innovations globally with Swedish foreign missions and local partners in countries where the projects take place. Working as a Project Manager with projects and events on international level, Birgitta is mainly focusing on innovation, sustainability

and entrepreneurship, with the wide scope of experience in collaborations with democracy, culture, society and sustainability with Central and Eastern Europe.

Title: Welcome speech on behalf of the Swedish Institute

Mrs. Birgitta Tennander pointed out that the Swedish Institute promotes Swedish interests and creates mutual relationships with other countries around the world.

She presented the achievements of the Smart Living Challenge worldwide, where over 800 participants presented their ideas in 27 countries! Among them, 15 winners were selected as the best start-up ideas!

Sasan Shaba Engineering and Innovation Management Business Development Manager

Sasan has experience in developing innovation processes, product development, business development and concept development. His scope of work includes an overall responsibility for the existing companies in Eskilstuna (Sweden), as well as supporting the innovation ecosystem, locally, regionally

and internationally, by pursuing business development projects, activities and structures to create a high impact in business, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Sasan loves international work. He has worked in Sillicon Valley for 2 months.

Besides this, he conducted many workshops over the years.

Elma Krasny Structural Engineering, MSc. Partner at Walter BIM Solutions

Elma holds a Masters Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Kansas. She has almost 15 years of experience working as a Consultant and Engineer in the United States, England and Bosnia and

Herzegovina. Her passion is to support young people and their entrepreneurial ideas.

Sanjin Avdić Mechanical Engineering, MSc., MBA Sector Leader of Energy & Environment at UNDP

Sanjin Avdić graduated from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sarajevo and holds MBA with honours at Nottingham Trent University. He is a lecturer at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Sarajevo, on subjects:

"Energy management in the local community" and "Energy Efficiency Management in Buildings".

Title: Energy efficiency and local potentials for smart housing

Mr. Sanjin Avdić presented current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding energy efficiency. He underlined key issues and challenges that we face when we create smart buildings. Financial modalities, energy prices, legislation (norms and standards), and energy consultations take prime place.

Mr. Avdić's presentation was an excellent input in BH market which is related to Energy Efficiency in Smart Living.

Dženana Maglajlić Bijedić Architecture, PhD University of Sarajevo Faculty of Architecture

Dženana Bijedić is a Vice Dean for International Cooperation at Faculty of Architecture in Sarajevo and staff member of the Chair for Architectural Structures and Building Technology, with a PhD in Architecture and Urban Planning. She was awarded with Hubert

H. Humphrey scholarship and admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Focus of her professional interest is management of environmental limits related to defining the architectural space.

Title: Design methods and processes in smart housing

Prof. Dr. Dženana Maglajlić Bijedić has prepared the lecture about design phases in which she included: programming, designing, construction, occupancy and maintenance. Furthermore, Bijedić said that architecture cannot be perceived as an abstract sculpture or a non-life form anymore, but as a smart architecture with complexity and integrity that is a vital prerequisite for its life, thus long term sustainable.

Sanela Klarić Architecture, PhD International Burch University Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies Sanela Klarić is a senior facilitator and capacity building expert in CSO and government sectors with more than fourteen years of experience working with international organizations. She is familiar with development programs and has good understanding of post-war and post-socialist transition

context, local government and development strategies. Klarić is Head of Department of Architecture and Director of Green Council NGO. Title: Local traditional materials for smart housing

Prof. Dr. Sanela Klarić, based on her PhD research, shortly but very effectively proved that traditional local materials are the base for smart and sustainable living in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Local traditional house, which is described in Professor Klarić's presentation, is a perfect example which shows us that we already have tradition of sustainability.

Senka Barudanović Biology, PhD Faculty of Sciences, University of Sarajevo

Senka Barudanović has 24 years of experience in education and research of Balkan plant diversity and ecology.

She has gained the knowledge, experience and skills relevant to the sustainable management of biodiversity at the regional and international level. She served as a chairperson of

the SBSTTA Convention on Biological diversity at Nagoya, Japan. Barudanović is associate professor at Faculty of Sciences.

Title: Biodiversity and environment potentials for smart housing

Prof. Dr. Senka Barudanović, as a very experienced biologist, in the first part of her presentation spoke about Bosnian-Herzegovinan landscapes, natural resources and beauties; all followed with amazing pictures. The second part was filled with inhuman examples of land use, such as illegal forest cutting, floods, inappropriately planned roads.

Garret Tankosić-Kelly MSc. Int. Management SEECN Foundation Director

Garret Tankosić-Kelly is a founder and Principal of SEE Change Net, a regional sustainable development Think Tank, based in Sarajevo. As the former Head of United Nations in Montenegro, he initiated the world first UN Eco Premises in Podgorica. He is also a BAFTA

award winning film producer and an Honorary Director of EDUS Association.

Title: Ongoing energy models and local potentials for smart housing

Mr. Garret Tankosić – Kelly presented first UN eco premises in Montenegro, the strengths and weaknesses of our environment to create the smart building. 'Energy model 2050,' which he is involved in, is showing the way to the fairer, cleaner, more efficient energy system in South East Europe.

The model will be developed for 7 countries and it will allow us to make sensible choices about our energy future in line with EU goals.

DAY TWO

The second day of Smart Living Challenge Conference and Creative Workshop started with great expectations! Mr. Shaba, as process leader, presented expected dynamics of start-up development. Participants chose their group of interest and dived into the identification of the problem and solution proposals!

The outcomes of these discussions were brilliant. It became obvious to everyone involved that this Conference and all participants can truly be the advocates of change! After 5 hours of workshop and decision making process, the pitching sessions of 3 minutes started.

UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION: We are making a synergy of past and the future to better our lives in the present. We are using the wisdom of the past, combining it with the technology of the future to find a solution for a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

BUSINESS DESCRIPTION: In order to satisfy the everlasting need of the costumer to touch, feel, smell, taste and see, in one word consume, in order to understand our mission, we are planning to build the HOUSE in which we would present all the benefits of use of traditional material in architecture.

The HOUSE will be built with traditional materials, using holistic design approach and strategies that will maximise the advantages offered in the nature.

SOLUTION: At first, the HOUSE would be an example of sustainable and smart living where the general public could come and ask questions and educate themselves on the topic of traditional materials.We would start with spreading the knowledge and hopefully, end up with giving advice and making real design solutions for concrete costumers who recognise the benefits of a more sustainable and healthier lifestyle. The

more buildings we make, the more educated general public becomes, and with that we decrease the carbon footprint and pollution and use the traditional materials more efficiently.

BACKGROUND SKILLS: Our team consists of four architects and one graphic designer with different backgrounds but mutual passionate interest in the topic of our start-up. The leader of our team is University professor who dedicated her life to spreading knowledge on traditional materials and breaking prejudices when it comes to their use in architecture and construction.

Setting up a web site where we would have virtual model of our project with all the necessary information that will bring our project closer to the public.

We would set up series of lectures open to public where we would explain our idea from different aspects and seek for further support.

DESCRIBE YOUR STRENGHTS: Our environment has very good potential for the development of our idea. Our country has many natural resources that are being used in an inefficient way or not being used at all.

Diverse background and the passion for this particular topic of the members in our group is one of our biggest strengths.

We are planning to start with one project and work a lot on its promotion.

First, we will focus on gaining the trust of our visitors. Since our final goal is for as many people as possible to decide to build their houses using traditional materials, we will first offer free consulting services. The more people we educate, the stronger and wider our promotion becomes. In the future, we see ourselves as mediators between the companies and the costumer, consulting and design team for real projects and driving force for the development of the traditional materials industry.

UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION: Nature Inception is not new but ''forgotten idea''. In the contemporary time we are spending more time watching nature on our screens then spending more time in real nature (Real? Yes, it exists.).

It is crucial time to reconnect with the ''green'' and get back to the ROOTS, but this time in the city environment. This way, as a part of huge diversity which needs to be nurtured, we will develop tools to better address all the challenges urbanization puts in front of us.

speaks for itself. Since the idea is to be involved in gardening and communicating with people, this is the first step towards geeting people interested.

Later, after few of these gardens appear in the city, we are creating the natural process of networking. Start of the second phase on Nature Inception, Educational Village, is ready when this city network is made. We think our idea can be implemented in any city and it will be spread worldwide, as a service but as well as a sustainable green movement!

THE PROBLEM: Lacking accurate data in every segment of decision making on all levels, ranging from public to private sector. This leads to incorrect starting point when governments, private and public companies, non government organisations, and even family units are developing their strategies and plans for energy efficiency. In this sense, the very implementation of energy efficiency is unmotivational and unrealistic.

Next step is to start the processes of the actual realization of some of the projects that evolved and were proposed at this Conference. We hope to meet again and work on concrete issues and projects that will raise the next Swedish-Bosnian Smart Living Conference to a higher level, when we will not just hypothetically speak of projects that could be accomplished, but will be able to present concrete results of our collaboration and action to our future audience.
