Remnants of a Bygone Era This book was my graduation project in which I showcased the hidden heritage of Vadodara. The concept of the book was to show a few selected places which are either lesser known, in ruins or even demolished and to bring out the hidden aspects of the city.

4

Why Vadodara Born and brought up in Vadodara, I have always been fascinated with what the city has offered us all till now. It is the amalgamation of various people, customs, ideas, art and cultures. One can also be fascinated with the architectural forms from the different reigns which prevailed in the city. Once a princely state, it has been culturally groomed by its royal patrons.

Why this project Although there are a lot of places in Vadodara which are historically and culturally significant to us, there are also places which whisper tales into our ears but are unheard. While we all know about the famous places in our cities, there are also many places of significant value which are neither documented nor publicised.

New Cities, New Stories In the beginning every place might seem alien to us. So why not familiarize ourselves with the places, the culture, the stories entwined within and explore areas to intrigue our inner globetrotter. Tread a little more around the city to find stepwells, a park for our feathered friends and a museum for the lean mean speed machines. This was an illustrated cartographic rendition of India’s first world heritage city, Ahmedabad and the capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. This map was illustrated as a 3 page fold as a part of the classroom publication project.

Kaffa Ready for your daily cup of Joe? Feast your eyes (and your palate) on “Kaffa, an exotic range of roasted Ethiopian coffee beans, straight from the heart of the finest brewers. Sip on to awaken yourself and your taste buds. This was a hypothetical project on packaging and label design of the high-end specialty coffee brand.

Mehfooz We were asked to select an attribute which would describe ourselves as an individual and from that we had to make a brand (hypothetical) or rebrand an existing one. I chose the attribute ‘helpful’. My brand is a hypothetical NGO which strives to fight against FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and eradicate it.

Until Dark Is anybody following me or is it just in my head? This thought lingered on my mind while crossing that dark and silent alley wondering what stories would have been buried down here. This was a hypothetical classroom assignment to design a book cover for the murder mystery book- Until Dark.

36

Apollo 11 Everybody has seen the pictures of the monumental moon landing. Let’s just say that this is my perception of how things would have looked had I been there at that time too. The outer space has always inspired me to look beyond what I see. All those colors of the Nebulae, space gases, death of a star or even new discoveries have always been my fascination. This was a pen and ink illustration of the monumental moon landing of the Apollo 11.

37

Taco recipe booklet Ever wondered how to venture into a new cuisine but afraid that you would not succeed? Fear not! These handy dandy cards are sure to help you prepare lip-smacking tacos. Now forget those boring cookbooks. I created a digital illustrated recipe for tacos. I chose to present it as an accordian which could be easily stored and looked into.

38

Ethnography There are stories woven into every piece of cloth. Created intricately by hand and infused by the embodiment of love for their “mata, these elegant creations that tell us tales have long spent their time in the shadows. This was a hand-painted ethnographic journal on Mata ni Pachedi about the process, community, and the stories entwined within.
