Stampin Success Jan-Feb 2014

JAN/FEB 2014

Many of you know that the past few months have been quite an adventure for me as I have recovered from a serious horse riding accident. Thankfully, my recovery has been amazing, and I expect by the time you read this, I’ll be almost back to normal . . . whatever normal is. (smile) Among the many, many things I’ve learned (or re-learned) through this experience is how wonderful it feels when people reach out, sharing love and encouragement and support. During the past several months, I have received literally hundreds of cards and gifts from around the world, letting me know I was in people’s thoughts and prayers. The power I felt from this sharing was huge! I read every single one. How could I not? Each one lifted me up and made me feel special.

During the first few weeks of my accident, Sterling wrote a few times on my blog, and one of the things he did (without my knowledge) was invite demonstrators to share Stampin’ Up! with others. He knows of my deep belief that what we do at Stampin’ Up! matters, that we can truly make a difference, and he knew that few things would cheer me up more than to hear that demonstrators were doing exactly that. Our Statement of the Heart is so much more than simply words to me—I’ve seen those words transformed into action and seen the difference we make. Thank you for believing with me!

Some cards had been personalized for the situation (more than one had a horse on it!) or to represent the person who sent it. Many cards and gifts had been signed by groups of people, either entire departments at Stampin’ Up!® or downlines or groups of demonstrators and customers. I noticed that several people sent more than one card, wanting to continue to send well wishes my way. The creativity in that pile of cards and gifts was

inspiring alone, not to mention what I felt as I read the messages and scriptures and words of encouragement. There is no doubt in my mind that I was strengthened by the love you all shared.

yourself tray chic

Picture frames come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and with a little creativity they can be used for so much more than photos. Why not upcycle a frame into a beautiful serving tray? That's what we like to call "tray"ding up.

Here’s how to re-create this tray. 1 . Take a frame off your wall or buy one. Your local thrift store can be a great resource for old frames with classic detail.

2. Paint the frame your desired color. Our artist chose white so that the Designer Series Paper could easily be switched out to coordinate with home décor, holidays, birthdays, and special occasions.

3. C ut your favorite Designer Series Paper down to size and insert it under the glass.

4. Add metal handles with a strong bonding agent like E-6000 glue. Allow adequate time to set.

Here are some other ways to use this DIY tray to serve up some fun: • D eliver treats to your neighbor. • S erve tea or lemonade at brunch. • G ive it as a house-warming gift.

CASEing

CASE (kās) v. Copy And Share Everything In the world of papercrafting, there is no shame in copying; in fact, we encourage it! CASEing is an easy way to come up with a project quickly, and there’s more than one way to CASE. You can copy a project exactly, or you can switch out some of the elements to adapt it for different needs. First of all, don’t fret over the word “copy” or let it make you feel like you’re not being creative. Remember, you still have lots of fun choices. What will you copy? Will it be the color palette, the placement of the elements, the style, the techniques? In the new Thank You card, our artist decided to copy the strong design elements and placement—then made a few of her own choices. Let’s talk about what was changed: •C olors. Our artist chose more contrasting colors for her card which gives the card a completely new look and feel. Now, the new card is perfect for anyone—a coworker, a brother, or even Dad. •S tamps. See how our artist’s choice of a different “Thank You” stamp gives the card a unique style that coordinates perfectly with its new background—a geometric design. • Accessories. Our artist replaced the Linen Thread with Baker’s Twine, ribbon with washi tape, and the doily with a starburst circle. Different accessories = different style.

So, say “Thank you” in a new way with a completely new card. The message is still the same, but the card is completely unique. doily thank you card (5-1/2" x 4-1/4") Regarding Dahlias Stamp Set; Very Vintage Jumbo Stampin’ Around® Wheel; Pumpkin Pie, Summer Starfruit, and Very Vanilla Cardstock; Coastal Cabana and Midnight Muse Classic Stampin’ Pads; VersaMark® Pad; Clear Stampin’ Emboss® Powder; Calypso Coral 3/4" Chevron Ribbon; Linen Thread; Tea Lace Paper Doilies; Stampin’ Dimensionals®; Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack; watercolor brush; hole punch

step it up

SIMPLE CHANGES. ANY PROJECT. ANY STAMPER.

So Fun, So Easy Take a basic design, make a few changes, and presto—you’ve just stepped up your project!

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3: 1. Add sequins for metallic flair. 2. A dd splashes of color for a watercolor look.

3. Add a tag for a finishing touch. Simple to Sensational Our simple Hello card shows just how beautiful a simple card can be. Make sure your customers know that it’s just as easy to take a few more minutes, add a few more touches, and they’ll turn simple into sensational! Let’s talk about how it’s done.

Make It Metallic Our first step-up took a few minutes (really, it did). We took a few sequins from our new Gold Sequin Trim and added them to the card front. This gives the card a metallic shine without

overpowering it. The gold shine also complements the watercolor wash of the card’s background like a dream.

Drops of Ink We didn’t stop stepping up our card with a few sequins. For our next step-up, we wanted to add a bit of watercolor to the metal sequins for a trendy look. With Aqua Painter in hand and a few drops of Crisp Cantaloupe ink, we’ve succeeded without a lot of fuss.

Finish with a Tag Our final step-up was a cinch! We cut a tag with the tag die in the Chalk Talk Framelits Dies using our Big Shot. This tag gives our card that finished, professional look that every card begs for. The tag die even cuts the hole to tie a bit of twine to the card—so fun! No doubt that just a few additions will transform a simple card into a stepped-up masterpiece!

keep it fresh

Welcome to your party this month! In this article you’ll find one project to demonstrate, one to share as a Make & Take, and one to give as a hostess gift. Feel free to change things up, but you’ll find everything you need for your next round of parties on these two pages. Keeping customers and party guests coming back for more is easy when you keep your projects fresh and trendy. Our projects this month take advantage of the color and style coordination of the exciting Retro Fresh suite of products. This suite features the unique color palette of Tangerine Tango, Coastal Cabana, So Saffron, and Baked Brown Sugar mixed with a fun retro photo style, arrow shapes, and so much more. Let this suite take center stage at your next party!

Take a look at our Hello card. Notice how a few strips of the Retro Fresh Designer Washi Tape, with perfectly imperfect edges, give this card a fresh background that anyone could create. Since the color coordination in the tape is already decided for you, it makes choosing the Retro Fresh Designer Series Paper for your frame so easy.

A Beautiful Page Another way to show off at your party is by sharing a beautiful page with your hostess. This page will tell her just how much you appreciate her— and all she will have to contribute is a photo of her own. Again, the colors and products from the Retro Fresh suite make coordination choices easy to make. Our artist enjoyed using the arrow theme throughout her page. The arrow is repeated so often in the Retro Fresh suite that you and your customers will find it easy to use, too.

A Retro Journal And of course we have a journal featuring the Retro Fresh This and That products. Show your customers these products offer everything they need to create a fun journal in minutes instead of hours! As you demonstrate, tell them, “I love the Retro Fresh This and That Journal and coordinating products because they make it easy for me to create a fresh, cute journal without it taking a lot of time. You should really give it a try to see how easy it is.” No doubt you’ll agree that the versatile products in the Retro Fresh suite will make your next papercrafting party a hit!

If you’ve visited our customer website or Pinterest page lately, you’ve likely seen myriad stamps people have created using our Undefined Stamp Carving Kit. If you haven’t tried your hand at stamp carving yet, it’s high time you did! Re-create the thrill you felt the very first time you put rubber to ink to paper by trying this new creative experience—and then share Undefined so others can do the same! Most of your customers are sure to love stamp carving— especially those who pride themselves on individuality. Undefined will also attract new customers. With DIY so popular these days, who wouldn’t love the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind stamp? Carving stamps is easier than it sounds—even for those customers who consider themselves “artistically challenged.”

STEP 1. Using a pencil, draw

the images for your stamps on a piece of paper.

tip:

After you draw them, trace all your images onto a single 3" x 4" piece of vellum to help you make the most of the space and get more stamps from a single 3" x 4" piece of rubber.

STEP 2. Place your sketched images pencil side down on the rubber and rub the back of the paper or vellum with your fingernail (or try a Bone Folder or other tool) to transfer the images to the rubber.

STEP 3. Use the carving tools to carve your

stamps. The smaller V-shaped tool is best for fine details, while the U-shaped tool can clear away more rubber from larger areas.

tip:

Technique

Trace the blocks first so you know how big to make your images.

tip:

It’s best to rotate the rubber rather than the tool when carving curved lines.

10 © 1990–2013 STAMPIN' UP!

You’ll find supplies and instructions for the Howdy card in this month’s Online Extras.

tip:

If you want to store your stamps in the Undefined Refill Kit box, there’s blank space on the front of the box to stamp your images.

tip: STEP 4. Remove the white backing

sheet from the foam, and adhere it to the back of your carved rubber. Cut out the images using craft scissors. Stamp each stamp on its wood block before mounting it so it’s easy to find the stamp you’re looking for.

We recommend Jet Black StazOn ink for stamping on the blocks.

STEP 5. Remove the brown backing

sheet from the stamps, and adhere it to the corresponding wood blocks.

tip:

You can also mount your stamps on Clear-Mount Cling Foam (item 124236) and use them with clear blocks.

tip:

Technique

To make carving easier, the Undefined rubber is softer than our other stamps, so be gentle when cleaning your carved stamps.

go natural

GIVE YOUR CREATIONS A NATURAL LOOK, STAMPIN’ UP! STYLE Wood and cork have been mainstays in interior design for years. Now we’ve added them to your crafting repertoire. Demonstrate these natural materials in your papercrafting projects—your customers will fall in love with the unique texture and one-of-a-kind results.

Make It Good with Wood Even unadorned, our Essentials Wooden Elements have a beautiful, natural aspect. But you can add a custom factor with our stamp imagery. Pair the wood with your favorite saying or image to make a statement that’s all about you and the project you’re making. Note: Because wood is porous, there may be a slight bleed in your stamped image if you stamp directly to the wood without first adding a base of ink or paint. You can see that on the Oh Snap card shown here. Experiment to see what look you like best.

»This is a natural wood product. Grains, knots, and

natural marks on the wood are normal and should not be considered a defect. Each one will help you create a unique accent. Put a Cork ON It Our Cork Assortment adds dimension without excessive bulk to any creation. Plus the pieces are self adhesive, finely ground (so there’s less cracking), easy to use . . . and cute! It comes with a three pack of twine and is designed to coordinate with the Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper, but it offers a variety of other options as well. Create cork accents in shapes you choose by stamping on the negative space and using Paper Snips to cut around the stamped image. Let your customers choose their own piece to stamp and use on a Make & Take.

» Since the cork is one of our Sale-A-Bration offerings, it’s

Scrapbooking

easy to promote it to customers. Show this product at your parties and say, “If you add another $____ to your order, you can get this cork assortment for free! You get all these adorable self-adhesive pieces—and you can use the leftover pieces to stamp and cut embellishments of your own.” Like all of our products, our Wooden Elements and Cork Assortment are more fun when they’re shared. So go natural—put these products to use and let customers discover how great they are.

watercolor wonder Welcome to your party this month! In this article

you’ll find one project to demonstrate, one to share as a Make & Take, and one to give as a hostess gift. Feel free to change things up, but you’ll find everything you need for your next round of parties on these two pages. Have you ever daydreamed of being a famous watercolorist— like Susan Branch or Marjolein Bastin? Then your bubble burst when you remembered the many times you’ve hastily assembled a few art supplies, and with an inexplicable burst of confidence applied washes of paint to a fresh sheet of paper . . . only to see your lack of skill exposed in sixty seconds flat? Take the Watercolor Wonder Designer Note Cards and Envelopes. The cards are printed on heavy watercolor paper and have the look of being handpainted. There are 20 note cards in a pack, but if you do as our artist did for the hostess gift and cut both cards and envelopes in half, you’ll get 40 cards and 40 envelopes. If you give each hostess a set of four that is 10 hostess gifts for $12.95—plus the cost of a little washi tape for sealing the envelope sides. That is less than $1.50 per hostess. Or take the opportunity to upsell

by showing your customers how easy it is to make cute envelopes for the halved cards using our nifty new Envelope Punch Board.

sale-a-brate what you do WANT TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS? THEN BREAK OUT YOUR CALENDAR! Your existing customers know all about SaleA-Bration and will be lining up to see what’s in store this year. And this is a great time to reach out to those you haven’t seen in a while and invite them to stamp again. But nothing compares to the potential of Sale-A-Bration to help you find new stamping friends.

By now you will have noticed that the beautiful Sale-A-Bration brochure features six bundles which are each priced around $50 us/$60 can—perfect to earn a Sale-ABration freebie. These bundles have enhanced the Sale-A-Bration brochure in a new way. For the first time it can stand alone as a representation of our products. Even a person who is totally new to Stampin’ Up! will be able to choose and order from the brochure; they only have to enter one item number to get a whole bundle! Even better, the bundles are designed to meet specific needs and interests. Whether customers love home décor, want to get prepped for an upcoming birthday, or just love to have a stash of cards on hand, there is a bundle for that.

»This year we have six bundles in the Sale-A-Bration brochure priced around $50 us/$60 can—perfect to earn a Sale-A-Bration freebie. Check out these two examples below from the brochure.

Make a plan to meet 100 new customers during Sale-A-Bration. At first that may seem like a lot, but here are a few steps to make it happen: • Invite existing customers to host events during Sale-A-Bration. Coach them to invite people who have never stamped. Offer an additional incentive if they have at least 10 people at their event. With one workshop on your calendar per week, you’ll be well on your way to your goal. •O rder 50 extra Sale-A-Bration brochures and hand them out to people who have never stamped. Start with family, friends, and neighbors. As you give them the brochure, be sure to tell them, “Now is the best time to order; you’ll get amazing free gifts with your purchase!” Then you need to follow up. When you do, offer to place her order or ask if she wants to plan a party with her friends. Challenge yourself to hand out all 50 brochures (outside of events) by February 20, and follow up with every person by February 28. That way there is still time for them to attend an event, place an order, or host a party. •H ost a party and offer a bonus gift, prize, or drawing entry for each person who brings a friend. Make a big deal of it and reward them. •P lan an event at a local library, sorority, or with a women’s group. They get a project and fun, you get to meet a bunch of new customers! It’s a win-win.

We love Valentine’s Day! And why wouldn’t we? It’s a chance for us to say “I love you.” And it doesn’t just have to be about romantic love. This holiday is a time to share the love with anyone and everyone. We’re here to help you get ready with our A Whole Lot of Love promotion.

There are seven components of this promotion: 1. Love You More Stamp Set 2. Follow My Heart Stamp Set 3. Flowerfull Heart Stamp 4. Sweetheart Treat Bags 5. Monster Hugs Boy 6. Monster Hugs Girl

7. Sweet Sayings Cards and Envelopes These products will give you everything you need to tell anyone “Happy Valentine’s Day” or “I love you!” Start with the stamp

sets and then take a look at the accessories before you plan your valentine parties.

to the back like we did here. Either way, these little monsters are going to be a hit.

Our Sweetheart Treat Bags will give treats all the heart they need. They come with a perfectly trimmed edge, a printed label (ready for stamping), and Pool Party Baker’s Twine. All you have to do is stamp one of your perfectly chosen images on the label, slip your treat inside, and tie it up. Nothing could be easier . . .

If your customers are just looking to make a few simple cards, the best choice is the Sweet Sayings Cards and Envelopes. We’ve given you two examples here in this article and another example in the Stamps article of this issue (page 24). All they need to do is stamp a greeting and write a message.

Well, unless of course you just want to give a little monster hug away. These might be the easiest things ever. Give these little guys to the kids in your life. It will make their day. They would also be great for kids to give as their class valentines. Just add candy, clasp their arms, and adhere the heart. You can put the heart over the hands to keep them closed, or add a little something extra

These products are only available for a limited time, so make sure you and your customers start thinking about Valentine’s Day!

BIG memories Mini albums are a big deal right now. Here’s why: they take less time and energy to complete than large scrapbooks. They have fewer pages so it’s easier to focus on a single theme, like a sisters’ getaway or a single year of school. They make photo organization simple, too—when you want to show off photos of your latest vacation, it’s so much easier to pull out a small album than to flip

through a big book. And they make great gift albums—think baby’s first year for a new mom or a farewell gift for a favorite coworker.

• Gold sequins: 20

Those are all good reasons to love our Mini Memories Simply Created Album. Here’s what you get—put them together any way you want:

The Mini Memories album is perfect for a class or club. Order a kit for every guest and provide stamps, ink, and adhesive. Tell your guests to bring their photos of an event. They’ll be amazed that they can put together an entire album in one sitting. And that’s the perfect time to take their orders for more albums so they can capture even more memories at home!

tag toppers

THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS TO LOVE BEING A DEMONSTRATOR We love tag punches. They make it so easy to create perfect tags in seconds. But they do have a drawback—they punch out the entire tag, so you’re limited to one size. Our concept artists, innovative and creative people that they are, envisioned a tool that punched out just the top of a tag, allowing them to choose the length of the tag. And they wanted their dream tag punch to also punch out the hole for a tassel or thread so they didn’t have to do it separately. Wish granted! Working from the inspiration of our concept art team, we designed a Stampin’ Up!exclusive tag topper punch design. You can punch tags of any length, but don’t stop there—the longer length opens up possibilities for more than tags. Try making treat holders like our Love treat holders, belly bands, bookmarks, and more!

Angled Tag Topper Punch • 2014 occasions catalog • item 133323 $22.95 us/$31.95 can

tips:

• The paper or cardstock has to be 2" wide— no more, no less. But you can use any length you want.

• Proper alignment is crucial. Make sure the cardstock is flush against the back of the punch.

• Like all punches, tag topper punches can punch only one sheet of standard-weight paper or cardstock at a time—don’t punch multiples or nonstandard materials like Glimmer Paper or chipboard. (You can punch the Foil Sheets featured in the occasions catalog.)

spreading joy, gratitude, and healing with stamps

Jaycene Morgan Senior Manager Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

On May 20, 2013, Jaycene Morgan was hunkering down in the elementary school where she teaches in Moore, Oklahoma, waiting out the tornado with her students. She recounts: “The tornado hovered over us but never did come down, so we were spared! It

basic needs, Jaycene found another way to help—stamping. She started by making cards to give her customers who received damage during the tornados so they’d have cards to thank people who helped them. “It was so rewarding to visit my customers and

ripped off all the air conditioner units and anything else that was on the roof, but the roof itself stayed together. Our vehicles were covered with insulation and other debris, and we all had hail damage. But that is so minor compared to other people. I stayed at school until 8:00 pm to make sure all students were picked up. Most parents had to walk over three miles to get to the school because they either had no electricity (so they could not get their car out of the garage), they had lost their house, or they had lost their house and vehicle. We finally closed out school, and then May 30 happened. That tornado came about two miles from my house and we received damage on our property—and Moore received additional damage.

hand them a package of 10 cards. I always asked them if they needed specific ones—like birthday, etc.— and if they said yes, I would go home and make them.”

Making a Difference

“My husband is a pastor of a church in Moore, and people gathered at our church each day for work assignments after the tornados. Eight school buses took people to and from their assigned work zones. A kitchen was set up to cook 24 hours a day, so anybody could receive a hot meal anytime. We received many supplies and let people come in and ‘shop’ for food, clothing, baby items, cleaning supplies, etc.” In addition to the relief efforts put in place at her church to address people’s

The effort grew from there. “My downline made many cards, and we packaged them and set them next to the place people ordered food [at the church] so they could take cards as they needed,” she shares. “We packaged cards in groups of five with a pen and postage stamps. We also took goodies and a card to the police department to thank the officers who were first responders and then continued to work 12–16 hour shifts to protect people’s items from looters.”

vehicles. Stamping allowed people to forget all that stressful stuff and have a normal life for one or two hours. It is just one way we incorporated and shared what we love!” This healing therapy is contagious and spreading (let’s start an epidemic!).
