MAR/APR 2014

As I write this, outside the snow is falling—I can hardly wait for spring, and winter is barely here! Sigh . . . I love spring for many reasons, including warmer temperatures, but I also love the feeling of growth and renewal that comes as spots of green grass start popping up and spring flowers break through frozen ground. This growth is particularly poignant this year as I look back over the past few months and the MANY things I have learned from my accident that have helped me become (hopefully) a better person. I thought I’d briefly share a few of the ways I’ve grown . . . First and foremost, I have gained an even greater appreciation for our Savior. What I have gone through doesn’t even come close to the pain and sorrow He willingly suffered for each of us, but it’s been difficult enough that I have a deeper understanding of His Atonement. During the past few months, I often offered a humble prayer of love and thanksgiving.

Next, although I have always tried to take care of my body, I took certain things for granted—easy, almost instinctive things such as walking, reaching, shifting . . . the list goes on and on. No longer! Every movement, every step, every moment I now recognize as the gift it is. Finally, I have learned to graciously and gratefully accept service from others. I have always been independent, but I was in a position where I definitely needed help. I have always known that serving others is essential for a happy life, but I now understand that receiving service is important as well. So this spring is definitely fresh and new for me; I hope you feel a sense of hope as well, as together we anticipate a new year full of potential!

And along those same lines, I have gained greater empathy for others who suffer, especially those who suffer with chronic, long-term health challenges. I don’t think I’m a judgmental person to begin

with, but once you experience certain things for yourself, there is definitely a heightened sense of understanding and patience for others.

CASEing CASE (kās) v. Copy And Share Everything In the world of papercrafting, there is no shame in copying; in fact, we encourage it! CASEing is an easy way to come up with a project quickly, and there’s more than one way to CASE. You can copy a project exactly, or you can switch out some of the elements to adapt it for different needs. We know you . . . you’re a problemsolver, a time-saver, and you love to craft. You want to create and share, but don’t want it to take a lot of time. Suppose you’re itching to create with the new Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper or a new stamp set—like Simply Celebrate (or anything from the occasions catalog)—but you don’t want to come up with a new design. That’s where CASEing comes in. Borrowing ideas is a big timesaver without ruining the fun! Plus, it makes party preparations even easier. The idea is all ready for you and all you need to do is adapt using the products you want to experiment with. Sometimes CASEing means you copy nearly everything, but in this month’s project, our artist copied one element—the layout. She decided to divide her card front using the idea she saw in the baby announcement— with the greeting on top and design below. With the layout in mind, she was free to add in her own style with the Designer Series Paper, stamps, and embellishments of her choice!

to add your own style to the project. Our artist liked the placement and type of embellishments and had a stroke of genius to add something unique to her card—a button and bit of Baker’s Twine. The look she created is fabulous! No doubt you’ll soon discover the more you CASE, the more your creativity emerges— especially when you have a solid design to copy. And you have so many resources: catalogs, Stampin’ Connection, Stampin’ Success, DBWS, etc. thank you card (3" x 6") Simply Celebrate Stamp Set; Bermuda Bay and Whisper White Cardstock; Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper; Basic Black Classic Stampin’ Pad®; Basic Black 1/8" Taffeta Ribbon; Whisper White Baker’s Twine; Basic Metal Buttons; Triangle Punch

step it up So Fun, So Easy

Take a basic design, make a few changes, and presto—you’ve just stepped up your project!

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3: 1. Swap out a basic paper for a specialty paper.

2. Pop up accent pieces with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

3. Add background detail with stamped images.

Make a Good Thing Better Basic projects are great, especially for new crafters. But it doesn’t take much

SIMPLE CHANGES. ANY PROJECT. ANY STAMPER. to make a good basic project even better with a few slight changes. Think glitz. The original gift bag has a sweet Strawberry Slush accent, but in our stepped-up version, we wanted sparkle. So we kept the Label Bracket shape but swapped the Designer Series Paper for more dramatic Silver Glimmer Paper. An easy way to boost a project’s appeal is to pop up a piece or two. We punched out and popped up the “a” in the sentiment and added a couple of stars just for kicks. And don’t underestimate the impact of a stamped background. The stamped background on the bottom of the gift bag

is easy—a stamp and ink are all the extras you need—but it completely changes the look of the basic bag. Show your customers how to make these small changes at your next class or party. They’re easy enough to do in minutes, and your customers will love to see what they can do with a basic gift bag. Step up plain cardstock with a stamped border like the polka dots here (item 133227 item 133230 ).

we’re all

Welcome to your party this month! In this article you’ll find one project to demonstrate, one to share as a Make & Take, and one to give as a hostess gift. Feel free to change things up, but you’ll find everything you need for your next round of parties on these two pages. From the very beginning, Stampin’ Up!® has been about making creativity fun and easy,

This fun suite (one of four suites featured in the 2014 occasions catalog) includes the Hello, Sailor

and one of the ways we’ve done that is to focus on coordination. Our colors are gathered into collections; those collections coordinate with ink, paper, and accessories; and many of our stamps coordinate with dies and punches. The High Tide Suite in the 2014 occasions catalog is a perfect example of our commitment to coordination.

Stamp Set, 1-1/4" Striped Grosgrain Ribbon, Silver Baker’s Twine, and High Tide Designer Series Paper. You can use these products together to make all kinds of nautical-themed projects, and because they’re designed to work together, you don’t have to spend time figuring out what goes with what. You can get right to the creativity part of crafting! Plus, because these products are so versatile, you can use them on a huge range of other projects as well.

And check out our You’re My Best Mate card—talk about inspiring! When you demonstrate this at your party, your guests will learn three different techniques (pad to paper, watercolor wash, and embossing) along with seeing a unique way to use Window Sheets. You’ll definitely set your sails for success when you feature the High Tide Suite at your next stamping event!

Point this out to your guests as you stamp together. Many people are intimidated by the prospect of crafting, and when they see how easy it is to create when they have you and Stampin’ Up! on their “crew,” the idea of making something with their own hands becomes exciting rather than overwhelming.

DIP MORE THAN EGGS THIS EASTER! Remember when your mother would tell you not to double dip? Well, push her well-intentioned, sanitary advice to the back of your mind for a bit. This technique was invented for the double dipper in all of us, creating great layers of colors to turn your drab, neutral project to fab and vibrant in minutes.

Here’s what you’ll need: • Ink refills in different hues of the same color. For the tassels, we used similar hues: Calypso Coral, Crisp Cantaloupe, and Pink Pirouette.

• Empty container for dipping. You can use the same container for each hue. Hint: The size of the container will depend on what you’re dipping. In many cases, empty button/brad containers and old Tupperware work well.

dyeing projects during a class or workshop and ask your customers to invite some of their creative friends to a dip-dyeing class by saying, “Isn’t this technique awesome? I’ve made some other cute and easy projects that I would love to show you and your friends at your own party.”

Showing different techniques during a class or workshop is a great way to excite your customers and help them unlock their inner artist. Technique classes let them get down and dirty with the products— escaping the rudimentary cut and paste steps of many paper projects—and are a great way to introduce creative women to Stampin’ Up! Showcase some of your dip-

Let’s not forgot that dip dyeing will also help you sell more products. During your technique class be sure to mention or show other products that can be dyed, such as neutral ribbon, doilies, and watercolor paper, and make sure they leave with a few ink refills in their order!

Use the Heat Tool to dry the tassel, though it can be a bit damp in between dippings.

PHOTOS ARE ALL THE RAGE NOW—SELFIES ARE POPPING UP ON FACEBOOK, PRACTICALLY EVERYONE HAS INSTAGRAM, AND WE CAN TAKE PICTURES AND MAKE PHONE CALLS AT THE SAME TIME! It only makes sense to combine our love of photos with our love for creativity. Stampin’ Up!’s new On Film Framelits Dies let us do exactly that, with an extra added twist—two of the six exclusive dies cut and emboss at the same time, creating amazing photo-related frames and accents for scrapbooks, cards, home décor, and more! We’ve made it even more fun by designing a coordinating stamp set to use with the Framelits. Our Peachy Keen Stamp Set contains seven images that further enhance the look and feel of your photo-op projects.

Sharing these new products will be as easy as saying cheese! At your next event, create a quick Make & Take page (see our Hello, Paradise page) that spotlights these images and accents. Your guests can make an entire page in only a few minutes, and they’ll see in a flash how quickly pages like these can come together. You could also create an entire class or event focused on the Framelits. Our Family Memories scrapbook (made by washitaping Crumb Cake envelopes together to create the album) is an ideal project. Check out the cover and one spread here; you can see two more inspiring spreads with the Online Extras on the demonstrator website to spark your own creativity. Your customers will love the idea of leaving your event with a darling album completely done! Show off these projects, along with your own fun ideas, to family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers—everyone enjoys seeing photos. And our new On Film Framelits make it easy to be part of the photo-taking and memory-making crowd!

Framelit Tip: Remember to place wax paper between the cardstock and the die when cutting more intricate styles such as the On Film Framelits. This allows the paper to release more easily after you’ve run it through the Big Shot.

The magic of Kits

HAPPENINGS SIMPLY CREATED CARD KIT

Kits have a magical quality that can help take your business to the next level. They allow people who have never stamped to create projects without getting overwhelmed. They help someone who has very little storage room feel creative and make something handmade without taking up a lot of space. They help you sell products. Kits just solve problems. Magical, right?

Kits are great for new customers.

Kits provide upsell opportunities. Since kits aren’t always all-inclusive, make sure your customers order other products they’ll need to complete their projects, like ink pads and adhesive. And as they become familiar with some of our other products, they may start buying coordinating products and building up their Stampin’ Up! supplies, giving you the chance to turn them into long-time customers and hopefully someday a recruit!

Feature

Kits make a great entry point for new Stampin’ Up! customers. All the designing is done, and with a few additional supplies, they can start creating right away. Encourage your regular customers to bring a new crafter with them to your next event. Talk with each guest one-on-one and find out their needs. Stampin’ Up! offers all

kinds of kits that make it easy to complete multiple cards (or treat bags, or banners, etc.), while still capturing the personal touch that comes with a handmade project. Help customers find the perfect kit for what they need—maybe even the Happenings Simply Created™ Card Kit.

It comes with almost everything you need to make 15 cards. You have to try it!” Plus there’s a coordinating stamp set they’ll love. And they can make the cards exactly as they’re shown or step out on their own if they are feeling a bit more confident. New customers are sometimes wary of creating a project from scratch. They don’t have the confidence in their skills yet, but kits can help them build the confidence to start branching out creatively. The Kaleidoscope Suite What’s Fresh for Spring:

Welcome to your party this month! In this article you’ll find one project to demonstrate, one to share as a Make & Take, and one to give as a hostess gift. Feel free to change things up, but you’ll find everything you need for your next round of parties on these two pages.

»When heat embossing on a Window Sheet, be sure to use a low heat setting.

How long has it been since you held a kaleidoscope up to the light and wondered how it worked? How DO those fascinating little bits of colored glass and beads rearrange themselves in exquisite patterns—melting like sand as you twist the cylinder? The secret? Carefully placed mirrors. Our Kaleidoscope Suite is just as mesmerizing. Trendy, fun, and incredibly versatile, it’s the perfect focus for a workshop— and great for both masculine and feminine projects. And you can use the products in this suite to adapt to just about any greeting card project. The Geometrical Stamp Set is the perfect choice for new customers who want a set that can work for either gender and multitask like a boss! Love, congratulations, encouragement—this set gives you what you need for a variety of occasions. And coordinating products (the Triangle Punch, the Arrows Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, and the Hexagon Hive Thinlits Die) endlessly expand your design possibilities.

For your workshop, try demonstrating a card with a feminine flair, then change the embellishments and tweak the design a bit to show how quickly you can give the same card a masculine look. See our Love You So cards for inspiration. Simply swap out the Calypso Coral Cardstock and ink for Midnight Muse—and a feminine card instantly becomes perfect for a fellow (AKA dude)! You can also demonstrate the Hooray for Today card and show your customers how quickly they can put together a fancy-schmancy card . . . with just a few simple steps. Be sure to let them get their hands on the Big Shot and the Stamp-ama-jig®. They’ll find out how fun and easy these tools are to use— and what a clean, professionallooking result they produce. And don’t forget a cute, little memento for your hostess! She’ll be thrilled when you present her with our Cheer Up Buttercup gift made with our Tag a Bag Gift Boxes. Fill it with a few cookies or candies and she’ll be your friend forever!

Sales The first area to focus on when you’re trying to promote is sales. Many things make selling easier, but we’re focusing on one piece—coordinating products. Coordinating products make selling easier because your customers have easier purchasing choices. Coordinating products also make creating easier. Most people would rather use a punch or a die than scissors to cut out a shape. An easier crafting experience is often a more enjoyable crafting experience—especially for new crafters. If they enjoy their first experience, they’re more likely to return for more. Upselling is also easier with coordinating products. If one of your customers orders a stamp set that has a coordinating punch, suggest they also purchase the punch. As a demonstrator, you’re probably more familiar with the catalog and product offering than your customers. Showing them products that coordinate is one service you can provide to help them have a better experience.

Leadership

Recruiting Once you get a handle on selling, you can take sharing what you love to a whole new level by offering the demonstrator opportunity to others. Think about it. Thousands of women around the world LOVE being demonstrators—it has changed their lives for the better. And thousands more would love it too if given the opportunity. Share that joy with others, and you’ll continue to promote as your business continues to grow. However, if being a demonstrator looks difficult, nobody is going to want to do it. In your demonstrations, show potential recruits how to keep it simple and still wow their customers; that will help them confidently envision themselves in your role. They’ll be more likely to give it a try and more likely to enjoy it when they do.

» Our Life Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect card is easy to

create but still packs a wow—a great demonstration to help potential recruits confidently envision themselves in your role.

The first step is often the hardest, but it’s easier to take that step with the help of a supportive upline. Your recruits are going to look to you for guidance. Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve been where they are and have gained valuable experience—you’ve got a lot of wisdom to share. And we’ve got your back! You’ve probably noticed that we’re offering more kits and bundles these days. That’s because we know they make papercrafting easier, while still providing the sense of accomplishment and joy that comes from creating something beautiful. Kits and bundles provide a trouble-free and enjoyable crafting experience for customers, and they make it easier for demonstrators to share what they love—especially new demonstrators who might feel lost when preparing for events. You can show your downline how to simplify their event preparation by using kits and bundles in their demonstrations. Then they can show their customers how easy and fun crafting can be. It seems like everyone is in a hurry these days. Plates are full and cups are empty. A hobby like papercrafting is a great way to fill those cups. With the help of kits and bundles, you can help your downline members fill their cups without adding much to their plates, and they can do the same for their customers.

» Our A Million & One Thanks card is a terrific example of a simple project (it’s just a kit and a few extra products) that you can share at your group meeting to help your downline members prepare for events and provide a simple and fun crafting experience for their customers.

InspiringCreativity Allison Okamitsu Counselor Calgary, Alberta

Allison Okamitsu finds inspiration in the everyday. “As I go through my day, I’m constantly seeing things that inspire my upcoming projects,” she explains. “Whether it is a favorite Christmas movie, a beloved game, or a love of cooking and baking, there is always an idea that comes to mind that I can translate onto stamps and paper. I love being swept away by a great idea and creating into the wee hours of the morning.”

This enthusiasm for creativity is something that Allison shares with her customers. “When I fall in love with a product that inspires a project, I’ve noticed that my customers fall in love right along with me.” She holds a variety of events to keep customers engaged. She says, “I offer a selection of events each month, including two Stamp Clubs, home décor and card classes, kids’ classes, and the occasional scrapbooking class. I like to keep my class selection fresh and exciting with different types of projects being offered each month. I’ve also had stamp carving classes with the Undefined Kit and My Digital Studio classes for new digital creators. I find that when I keep my classes on trend and constantly offer something different, my customers don’t get bored.”

»“I’m gold obsessed, which I’m sure you noticed from my

projects! I’m constantly reaching for my Gold Metallic Encore Pad, Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder, and Gold Foil Paper.”

Allison has come a long way since she joined Stampin’ Up! “I was invited to a workshop with a neighbor. I couldn’t attend, but I placed an order, bought a few stamp sets . . . and did nothing with them.” She got another workshop invitation the following year. “I had more free time so I was able to attend the workshop. I was totally hooked and decided to sign up just to get the Starter Kit. I was new to papercrafting and needed a good base of supplies. A few days before my Starter Kit arrived, I decided I might as well try to sell this stuff!” This decision changed her life. The Undefined Kit has had a big impact on her business— and her creativity. “I am absolutely, 100% in love with the Undefined Kit,” she shares. “I carved my very first stamp at Convention 2013, and it’s been a love affair ever since. I’ve since carved many more stamps, but my favorites are the ones I did at Christmastime to make my own gift wrapping and tags. I’ve also gotten several downline and customer friends hooked on stamp carving by doing demonstrations at downline events and offering two Undefined classes to my customers.”

promotions make the most of

USE FLOODING AND TARGETING TO REACH YOUR CUSTOMERS Every month Stampin’ Up! announces new promotions intended to help you increase your business. Some are targeted at specific products, others for hosting workshops or recruiting. If, after reading about a new promotion, you want to know, “How do I make the most of this?” then keep reading.

Each promotion is strategically crafted to give you a reason to contact more customers. By carefully planning how you’ll use them, promotions should help you gain more recruits, hostesses, and sales. Remember, promotions should help you increase what you are already doing, not shape what you are doing. Want a strategy for spreading the word about the latest deal? Try Flooding and Targeting.

flooding Flooding your message or promotion touches the masses all at once. After the message is sent, you’ll wait to see who is interested.

Business

• Send an e-card. Through DBWS, Stampin’ Up! provides professionally designed e-cards and newsletters for each promotion, so you can send an amazing message in moments. • Promote it through social media. Tweet a quick description of the promotion or a project using the featured product. You could pin your project on Pinterest or post it on your Facebook page or blog. People use the web to stay caught up on the latest and greatest. By using social media you’ll increase the likelihood that your followers and customers will take advantage of the promotion.

• Send out an e-mail to your existing customer base. In your e-mail, share the details of the promotion (feel free to borrow from www.stampinup.com), gush about why you love the product or opportunity—your personal endorsement goes a long way— and don’t forget to include an ordering link. Many of our promotions have flyers and other handouts available as a PDF that you can attach to your e-mail.

»Stay up-to-date with all the

current promotions by clicking on the Be In The Know link on the demonstrator homepage. targeting

•C ontact people who have shown interest, especially during hostess and recruiting promotions. Often, the right promotion is just the push they need to host or sign up. Past downline members and hostesses often want to try again. •U tilize Customer Manager. Use this tool on the demonstrator website to sort through your customers by order amounts, specific items they’ve purchased, when they last hosted, etc. to create your targeted e-mail or calling list.

»Watch a tutorial about

the Customer Manager under My Business>Customer Manager>Customer Manager Training Video

»Print out a copy of each

promotional flyer, place them in protective sheets and tie them together with ribbons. Have this promotion “binder” on hand during workshops or classes so attendees can see for themselves what’s available. For best results, use both methods. Flooding alone will leave it up to your customers to take action. We know that these efforts work best with some follow-up. Targeting alone may miss someone who you didn’t even realize would be interested. For each given promotion, get maximum results by choosing at least one way to “flood” your message and one way to “target” your message. For added focus, let your goals be your guide. For example, if you have a specific goal to recruit five new people and a recruiting promotion comes up, you may want to choose more than one way to flood AND more than one way to target. By using the promotions that cater to your goals you’ll be able to wisely manage your time and achieve your goals. Take a couple of these ideas and come up with your own advertising plan. Go on, start planning!

•U psell during workshops. When someone places an order, suggest they add the item that’s on special.

A Quick & Easy Booking Incentive FILL YOUR CALENDAR WITH PARTIES USING SUPPLY LIST PRODUCTS Sometimes it can be hard or feel awkward to ask someone to book a party. What makes it a lot easier? Booking incentives. Everybody likes a free gift, and it will be easier to ask your customers to host a party when you offer a gift for booking. It’s smart to invest in incentive gifts (for as little as two to three dollars each) since you’ll not only get party sales but will expand your customer base as more and more hostesses bring their friends to you. We offer several stamp sets on the Supply List that are designed to be used in your business—they’re small and affordable, which makes them the perfect incentive!

We recommend you make 28 at once (that’s how many stamps usually come in a Supply List stamp set) and then you’ll be all set for months. To keep the cost down, you can order the noncommissionable version of a set. Or if you need a bump in your sales, go with commissionable. Our Basic Black Stampin’ Spots and most of our incentive sets have a commissionable item number you can use when you order.

Get the Bookings Have a basket full of the incentive gifts at your parties. Anyone who books a party that night can choose one. Just say, “If you

schedule a stamping party with me tonight, you’ll be able to select a free stamp and Stampin’ Spot! I already made some cards with them, so you’ll have a good idea of what you can create.” We think you’ll find that lots of people won’t be able to resist your adorable incentives! booking incentives Best Card Ever Incentive Stamps; Brights and Whisper White Cardstock; Brights Designer Series Paper Stack; Basic Black Stampin’ Spot; Real Red 1/4" Stitched Grosgrain and Bermuda Bay 1/8" Taffeta Ribbon; Brights Candy Dots; Epic Day This And That Designer Washi Tape; Envelope Punch Board; spools

Make the Incentive Gifts Put these items in a cellophane bag and close it up with a small strip of washi tape: • One incentive stamp. On the demonstrator website, go to Ordering>Supply Items to see the list. • One Basic Black Stampin’ Spot®. These are also available on the Supply List. • Four premade cards. Celebrate with Big Wish

WISHING FOR MORE SALES? GRANTED! There are few constants in life besides birth, death, and taxes. But one certainty is this: everyone has a birthday . . . and deserves to celebrate! The Big Wish Stamp Set is a great way to kick off that celebration. Make it the focus of a class dedicated to showing customers all the amazing possibilities this set has to offer. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your class: •K eep it simple. Guests should see a variety of options without being overwhelmed. Our artist created one super-easy sample (the tag), one sample you’d give to a friend (the Happy Birthday card), and a sample with a more masculine feel (the Big

Wish card). Notice how each project focuses on different pieces of the set, highlighting its versatility.

•T ake advantage of the cost calculator to help you increase your profitability. This terrific resource is found on the demonstrator website under My Business>My Business Resources. Use it to help you determine your cost on the projects you create.

•V olunteer to demonstrate this set at a party. Say, “You can never have too many birthday cards, and I’d love to share these ideas with you and your friends. Just name the date and we can get your party started!” Sale-ABration runs through March 31, so hostesses can enjoy additional benefits!

It’s that easy. Start with the Big Wish Stamp Set and let it do big things for your sales!

•S et a goal to get three new customers at your class. If you have a core group of class attendees, encourage them to bring a friend. After all, who doesn’t need a birthday set? •U se a hostess code to maximize sales. Find out how on the demonstrator site under Webinars.

Brian’s Best Advice

Brian King

Senior Supervisor Atlanta, Georgia

It seems that Brian King was always meant to be a demonstrator. “I have a big personality, and I love to laugh. I’m not afraid to talk in front of a group of people and find it easy to quickly engage a group of strangers. Add in a fascination with art and a pure love of office supplies (stationery, pens, and pencils), and it’s clear I was destined to become a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator.” He was a perfect fit for the job.

Making a Difference

He joined for the same reason many of you joined—for a discount on the fabulous products. “I knew I’d likely sell to a couple of friends and coworkers but had no expectations that I would be able to reach customers all over the United States.” But then his upline encouraged him to work toward Rising Star. “I couldn’t initially comprehend such a high level of sales and success with recruiting. I thought it would surely exhaust me.” He continues, “As the year progressed and as my business grew, the goal became clearer. I was elated to finally complete the requirements for Rising Star, but I wasn’t exhausted at all. It was like passing through the banner at the end of a race but feeling like you could run it all over again.” Despite his success, things didn’t happen exactly as he planned them. “I seem like a natural fit for live events, but I only host, on average, one event each month. After several events with no-shows or disappointing sales, I decided to

• “Follow up with all leads.”

• “Let the business grow organically.”

• “Laugh, keep it light, keep [customers] engaged.”

focus my energy on online sales through my blog,” he shares. “Every day I post a new project on my blog, infusing humor and design tips (my unique perspectives on stamping or just helpful reminders) into my posts. I know that the only thing that separates my business from the business of the Stampin’ Up! demonstrator down the street is me—so I share me with my blog readers, customers, and team members so they can get to know me.” In return Brian spends time getting to know his customers as well. It’s part of why they love him so much! We asked Brian how he succeeds in recruiting. He shared, “It’s all right there in the Statement of the Heart—you have to love what you are doing and share what you love with others. You also have to ask someone to host a party or to join your team. It’s that simple.” And when someone joins his team he helps them find their voice as a demonstrator. “What is their special perspective or niche? What makes them stand out?” He is the perfect coach. Brian challenges himself by finding beauty in everything around him. He says, “I love to find a color or Designer Series Paper or stamp set that doesn’t initially appeal to me and challenge myself to create projects I love with it. It’s a great way to push myself to create interesting and fun projects.” Sounds like a challenge we should all try.

Cutting-Edge happiness Fringe is playful. Fringe is happy. It takes paper from flat to dimensional in an unexpected way. But snipping tiny cut after tiny cut is mind-numbing and handcramp-inducing. So how can you get the fringe without the tedium and fatigue?

The answer is: Fringe Scissors! Take a look at your standard scissors. They have two blades and make one cut at a time. Fringe Scissors have ten blades and make five cuts at one time. Fringe Scissors cut fringe, decorative grass, and confetti with just a few snips. Say good-bye to hand cramps and uneven cuts! And at $9.95 us $13.50 can, they’re a steal of a deal.

Plan to demonstrate a fringed project at your next party. First show your guests the finished project, and after they admire the multiple cuts, say, “This fringe looks time-consuming, but it’s really not. It took me no time to cut it with Fringe Scissors. And see what a difference that bit of fringe makes!” Then pass around the scissors and let your guests try them out. Once they try them—and see the low price—they’ll have to have them!

Tips:

To get the cleanest cut, cut with the middle of the blades—don’t start from the screw, and be sure to stop cutting before you get to the blade tips. If you cut with either end of the blades, the paper will tear slightly instead of cutting cleanly. We do not recommend cutting Glimmer Paper with Fringe Scissors.

» To increase the fringiness of the border, ruffle the fringe with your fingers so it doesn’t lie flat.

Other than workshops, where do you find

new customers? An upcoming Q&A will focus on the following question: How do you get your new recruits to go from “I just want the kit” to actually placing orders and promoting? We may not be able to share all of the responses we receive, but we’d love to read and share as many as possible.* Please include your demonstrator ID with your response. We want to make sure we give credit to the right person. We’d also love to know what questions you’d like other demonstrators to answer. Send your questions and answers to magazine@stampinup.com . Please send responses to this question

by April 30, 2014. *We may edit responses for length and clarity.

Work on projects at the coffee shop, hair salon, or doctor’s office; give away “thanks for the great service” cards to restaurant servers, store clerks, or your pharmacist. Send cards to everyone you know for special occasions. And listen to what people are trying to tell you. Women who just moved to the area, who are going through a stressful time, or who have just gone through a life-change (retirement, new baby, new marriage) need relationships that we can help them build, so pay attention and be ready to invite them to a stamping event.

Buffy Cooper Manager Winchester, Virginia I donate a private class to silent auctions. The winner and her friends can meet at my house or hers and I have prepared a custom class using a variety of products. A little pampering goes a long way. The people who are bidding for this class are already interested in papercrafting and this is a fun way to introduce them to Stampin’ Up!

Mary Walker Senior Supervisor Fairfax, Virginia My DBWS has been a wonderful resource for finding new customers. Because I have DBWS, my name pops up when people do a search. They go to my site, and they can see all the classes I offer. I’ve found a new customer a month for the past four months this way. A small number, but it’s one more new customer that month that I did not have the month before.

Senior Supervisor Bethlehem, Pennsylvania © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP!

Heidi Weaver Consultant Blackfalds, Alberta Carry annual catalogs, seasonal catalogs, or Sale-A-Bration brochures with you everywhere. One of my first customers saw the seasonal catalog I was carrying and asked where I get my Stampin’ Up! products because she wanted some items but couldn't find a demonstrator. Less than two months later she joined my downline. Use letterhead that identifies you as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator. I happened to grab my letterhead one day to write a note to my son’s teacher (it’s all I could find and I didn’t do it on purpose—but I do now). She told me she’s been looking for a demonstrator and she is now one of my best customers. Not only that, but she mentioned it to one of her friends who then became a customer, and that friend mentioned at the end of a parent-teacher meeting that she needed more supplies and one of the other teachers overheard and is now another new customer.

Karen Egeland Supervisor Green River, Wyoming My secret is to post on my blog daily and post a video to YouTube twice a week. My videos are not professional—when I make a mistake in the video I just keep going and show them how to fix it and they love it. Share freely what you love and be consistent.

Q&A

Sandy Fleming

From my very first workshop, I have made it my policy to have all shipments come to me. I do the sorting. I do the delivering. I add a handmade card to each bag as a special courtesy and people look forward to getting them to copy or to use. One definite benefit of my doing the sorting is that if there are omissions or damages, I can deal with them and explain them to the customer involved. My customers also love not having the fuss and bother of dealing with shipments. Yes, it’s a bit of extra work, but customer relations and the extra service are paying off. Perhaps I'm only expanding my customer base in baby-steps, but that’s better than nothing.
