Stampin Success May-Jun 2013

MAY/JUNE 2013

Dear Friend, The release of a new annual catalog is one of the most exciting times of the year for all of us involved with Stampin’ Up!® We can’t wait to see what’s inside—and then we can’t wait to get our hands on our favorite new products and start creating! As you browse through the new catalog, likely the furthest thing from your mind is how those products came to be. However, many of our home office employees are already involved in the process of developing new products (both stamps and accessories) for our upcoming catalogs. I thought I might share a very simplified “big picture” of that process . . . The new product process includes three main phases: predevelopment, design and development, and production. In predevelopment we do extensive research on trends, fashion, colors, customer needs, industry happenings . . . you name it, we look at it. We evaluate the research we’ve gathered, brainstorm ways we can meet needs and incorporate trends, and plan out product lines.

In design and development we gather inspiration, design products, and work with our vendors to develop high-quality, affordable products. In the production phase we work with our vendors (both domestic and overseas) to produce those products in an efficient, timely manner so that you can love what you do and share what you love! Throughout the process, there are quality assurance checks in place, financial evaluations, and continued assessments to make sure that we’re doing what is best for you. Of course, the process is much more detailed and complex than this; literally hundreds of employees are immersed in the work of coming up with new products! In fact, we’ve kicked around the idea of taking a photo of me in a bathtub of stamps for a long time, and this seemed like a great month to do it because of that. We hope that as you flip through the pages of the new catalog, you’ll get as immersed in the exciting new products as we are!

SIMPLE CHANGES. ANY PROJECT. ANY STAMPER.

So Fun, So Easy

Take a basic design, make a few changes, and presto—you’ve just stepped up your project!

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3: 1. Choose a paper pattern with extra contrast.

2. Dress things up with your ribbon choice.

3. Add an extra sentiment to your tag with an additional stamp.

Background Story A background can make a huge difference on any project. Look at our two boxes. The original box is quiet. It’s calm and ready to be handed over to its recipient. But

stamp the box and it’s ready for a party. It’s excited and wants to be noticed! The same goes for the two patterns of Designer Series Paper wrapped around the boxes. While they come from the same sheet of paper, they show off two different looks.

In the Middle The additional sentiment on the tag and the Champagne Glimmer Paper both add a little bit of extra color and texture to the gift. “Spoil yourself today” gives the birthday girl or boy the opportunity to get excited about their gift before it’s opened. And you can never go wrong with a sparkly scalloped border!

Tie Things Up And of course your choice of ribbon makes a difference to the overall look of your gift. Taffeta is an everyday common ribbon. It’s casual and comfortable. But if you really want to make your someone feel special, dress up her gift with Organza Ribbon. It’s beautiful and smooth; perfect for our second box. Both of these gift boxes are cute and perfect for birthdays. Show them to your customers and demonstrate what you can do with just a few extra products!

CASEing

CASE (kās) v. Copy And Share Everything In the world of papercrafting, there is no shame in copying; in fact, we encourage it! CASEing is an easy way to come up with a project quickly, and there’s more than one way to CASE. You can copy a project exactly, or you can switch out some of the elements to adapt it for different needs. The best things in life ought to be repeated; so it is with your favorite stamps and accessories. Help your customers find their personal faves by sharing projects that introduce them to a variety of accessories, tools, and techniques. To get started with this sample, pick a two- or three-color combo, a greeting, a punch, and ribbon. All that’s left to do is assemble.

The Inspiration Think of this template as homage to Andy Warhol: highlight the simplest design and, as often as possible, replicate it in different colors. The simplicity is its appeal, which makes it the perfect intro to Stampin’ Up! for new customers. Customers will stamp, punch, and play with ribbon and jewels. Show them how they can use this template

to make more than 30 cards for less than $60. Say, “Just think—one Saturday afternoon of card making can produce a nice cache of Thank You and Birthday cards.”

The Rendition The greetings would be nearly impossible to stamp were it not for the magical Stamp-ama-jig. Use the Stamp-a-ma-jig to perfectly position images every time (see p. 71 in the 2013–2014 annual catalog for a quick tutorial). Glue Dots® (a little-recognized but invaluable sidekick) make quick work of adhering the punched-out images. Our artist bent the wings a bit to give lovely dimension, making the butterflies float on the card. Add a little flash with ribbon and presto, a beautiful replica that you can pass off as your own.

»Suggest other ways to use the

template. Say, “You can personalize the Congratulations card with your graduate’s school colors. Or if you need a card for a wedding, use softer colors like Very Vanilla and Soft Suede and use Pearl Basic Jewels instead of a rhinestone.” thanks so much card (5" x 3-1/2")

make a big impression with new simply pressed clay Picture it. You’re creating the perfect project—you’re even amazing yourself with how well it’s coming together. Then you think, “This project needs one final touch.” And you go to get a button or other embellishment. Oh no! You don’t have the color you need. Never fear! Our new White Simply Pressed™ Clay allows you to create embellishments in various sizes and colors so you’ll always have just what you need for that perfect project. Our Buttons & Blossoms Simply Pressed Clay Molds give you six embellishments to choose from—three buttons and three flowers. And with Stampin’ Ink® refills, you can dye the clay to be whatever shade you choose. Phew! That was close.

make & take tip:

Guests at your party will love creating with clay. To use Simply Pressed Clay as part of a Make & Take, let your guests create the project without adding the embellishments. Then let them create the embellishments and take them home to dry before adhering them to the project. You could send guests home with a few Glue Dots or a bit of Sticky Strip to adhere the embellishments to their project later. It will be helpful to have more than one set of Simply Pressed Molds for the Make & Take so guests don’t have to wait as long.

As you demonstrate Simply Pressed Clay, tell your customers that embellishments made from clay can be imperfect—it’s part of the charm of handcrafted projects.

STEP 1. Add a small amount of

Stampin’ Ink refill to a piece of clay.

» For the Winner card, our artist rolled out the clay and

stamped the “1” image directly onto the wet clay, giving the image texture. Then she let the clay dry before cutting it to the size and shape she wanted. You can also roll out clay and let it dry before stamping on it. winner card (4" x 4") Blue Ribbon Stamp Set; Coastal Cabana and Whisper White Cardstock; Gingham Garden Designer Series Paper; Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, Daffodil Delight, and Strawberry Slush Classic Stampin’ Pads; Dazzling Details; White Simply Pressed Clay; Stampin’ Dimensionals; 1-3/8" Circle Punch; Big Shot; Finishing Touches Edgelits™ Dies

STEP 3. Press the clay into the Simply Pressed mold.

tip:

You may need to allow the clay to set in the mold for a while, particularly with the button mold, so the embellishment doesn’t lose its shape as you take it out of the mold. To speed up the process, place the mold in the freezer for a few minutes before removing the clay.

fill your world with color WELCOME THE NEW STAMPIN’ UP! COLORS TO YOUR STAMPING ROOM Since the last color renovation three years ago we have been watching our colors closely and continually researching, surveying, and monitoring. We decided now was the time for a small color refresh just as we promised we would do every three to five years to keep our colors fresh and on trend. As you’ll see, we bid farewell to 10 of our colors so we had room to welcome back nine of your old In Color favorites. But this time

we’ve also added a new color to the mix. As you can see, not only have we brought back a few of your old favorites, but we have also rearranged the collections a little bit (also to keep them on trend). Share the following descriptions with your customers to get them excited to play with the new colors. There are so many opportunities to use them. Share your own ideas as well!

Introducing the Newbies The new catalog always features new stamps sets, and this year they’ll be competing with new accessories on everyone’s musthave list. • Stampin’ Trimmer (p. 176): This core tool now has a few buddies to create fun borders. Bye, bye boring borders! •K its: Discover kits for gifts, scrapbook layouts, and journaling that are appealing to any customer, old or new.

The new catalog still features stamping tutorials so you and your customers can learn and try new techniques. The photos are clearer and the instructions a bit easier, making the tutorials (and the catalog) even more inviting.

•S torage cases (p. 197): We’ve redesigned the wood stamp cases to be uniform so they can be stored on the shelf next to your clear stamps with the images and stamp name on the spine! Empty cases are available for sale in the catalog so you can transfer all of your wood-mount sets to the new storage cases—and even use them to store accessories.

You loved the bright colors throughout the layout of last year’s catalog. We’ve managed to oneup ourselves by making the color swatches bigger and listing the color used. Now you and your customers have quick access to tons of great color combos without all the guesswork.

Get it out there! The annual catalog is your storefront. It helps you draw new people in and sell products. Start promoting the new catalog now on your blog, Facebook page, through e-mail, or with a new catalog party or open house. Promote your event by

OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY BASH—CONVENTION 2013 We’ve been celebrating Stampin’ Up!’s 25th anniversary all year, but what better time to celebrate than when so many demonstrators gather together for one exciting event? That’s right—let’s talk Convention 2013! When you come to convention, you’ll find a lot of the features you’ve come to know and love: classes, stamping presentations, display boards, swapping, recognition, awards, Make & Takes, and more. But it wouldn’t be an anniversary celebration if we didn’t plan a few extra surprises for this year of all years! While we don’t want to reveal everything, here’s a preview of what you can expect this year at convention.

25th Anniversary Opening Social We’ll kick it all off the first evening with a general session and an opening social. Do a little shopping, visit demo booths and displays, and spend time reconnecting with your fellow demonstrators. We’ll also have a great service opportunity to “Be the Difference”—and might just set a world record while we’re all together! (No really—you’ll have to come and see!)

“Convention helps my business the entire year and is a huge inspiration. It keeps me going with ideas. It’s a rocking good time and so fun. The displays inspire me and I go back through my pictures throughout the year.” –Debra Godfrey

“Convention is the birthday gift I give myself every year. What better way to celebrate than a fun getaway with my stamping friends! Frosting on the birthday cake? I take home a suitcase full of Stampin’ loot, a notebook full of inspiring ideas, and the energy to make my dreams a reality. Stampin’ Up! continues to surprise and delight, and each year, it just gets better and better!” –Julie Davison

»Of course convention is always open to

our foreign demonstrators, but this year we will actually have a few more than usual in attendance since our European demonstrators will be visiting Utah for their incentive trip in July. Convention 2013:

CRAZY for

Quatrefoil What makes a stamp set stand out? Sometimes it’s the clever sentiments, or the beautiful artwork, and other times it’s the versatility. In the case of our Mosaic Madness Stamp Set, there are many things your customers will love. This set makes use of one of the most classic, sophisticated, and timeless designs—the quatrefoil— which has deep meaning for many cultures around the world. The quatrefoil is said to represent harmony, symmetry, and good luck because of its four-leaf clover appearance. Your customers will most likely recognize this pattern, whether they’ve seen it on a building, in art, on a purse or in home décor. It is everywhere! And now, thanks to Mosaic Madness, your customers can add it to their papercrafting.

customers will benefit from your expertise. Each quatrefoil piece is broken up so they can build their own mosaic. Their projects can be simple, intricate, or everything in between.

At first glance, the set seems somewhat complicated, so your

From Simple For a quick customer project try our Make & Take card. It has a clean, white background—a blank canvas. Let your customers select a piece of Designer Series Paper and coordinating cardstock for the banners. Then, they can stamp a variety of patterned mosaics in different colors on the card. Explain why it’s a good idea to use the coordinating products by saying, “I just love the trendy look of this stamp set, and the coordinating punches that make it pop.”

complicated when you add more coordinating products. For our Demo It sample, use the Big Shot and the Modern Mosaic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, punch out a few of the shapes, and top off each one with a rhinestone. Seize the opportunity for some addon sales by telling your customers, “I love how easy it is to create intricate detail with a Textured Impressions Embossing Folder and some Rhinestone Basic Jewels.”

And Everything in Between To really drive home the point about versatility, show off the set in another way with the hostess gift. trim like you mean it WHY JUST TRIM WHEN YOU CAN TRIM IN STYLE? What do you do when the perfect tool doesn’t exist? You create your own. And that’s what we did with our new Stampin’ Trimmer. We knew you wanted more from a paper cutter. So we scrutinized loads of cutting tools, took their best qualities, and wrapped them up in our sleek and contemporary Stampin’ Trimmer. What makes our Stampin’ Trimmer a cut above the rest? •T he cutting track and handles are specially designed to make stable and straight cuts. •T he cutting track extends past the 12" cutting grid, so you can just slide a cutting blade or scoring blade to the end of the track and still get a full 12" cut. •T he cutting track locks into place—handy for transporting. •S uper-strong cutting blades stay sharp longer than others. (Use the cutting blade in both directions to extend its cutting life.) •T he 6-1/4" wide cutting base is wider than average, which means that all common measurements are on the trimmer base. And the swing-out ruler extends to 14-1/2" so you can cut extra-large paper. •T he ruler and 1/4" grid lines won’t wear off—they’re printed on the base and protected by a durable plastic cover.

•S torage space under the base holds additional cutting and scoring tools, like blades and Bone Folders. • I t’s not just practical—it’s sexy too, with curved sides, glossy surfaces, and meticulous details.

Take the new Stampin’ Trimmer to your next class or party and show it off. Say, “Even if you already have a paper trimmer, you’ll want this one. You don’t have to remove the scoring blade to cut—you still have a full 12" cutting area even with the scoring blade on! And it’s so much easier to cut cards—no more guessing where the 5-1/2" mark is.” dare to dream notebook Loving Thoughts Stamp Set; Baked Brown Sugar, Coastal Cabana, Crisp Cantaloupe, Pistachio Pudding, and Strawberry Slush Cardstock; Champagne Glimmer Paper; Baked Brown Sugar Classic Stampin’ Pad; Linen Thread; Vintage Trinkets; Stampin’ Trimmer; notebook

evolving with Stampin' Up!

Sandy Hancock

Making a Difference

Senior Director Duarte, California

Stampin’ Up! is celebrating 25 years, and we are continually impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of our demonstrators, especially those who have been with us almost from the beginning! Sandy Hancock started her Stampin’ Up! business in 1989, and with young children at home, earning extra income to stay at home with them was her first priority. When she found the Stampin’ Up! opportunity, she went for it—without even owning a stamp! “I was never a customer,” she remembers. “I didn’t even own one stamp before I joined Stampin’ Up! I joined to make money from day one!” Sandy didn’t let her lack of stamping experience stop her. “At one of my first events, the hostess announced that one of her friends who was coming had 2000 stamps! I was so intimidated. As I was going through my demonstration, I heard that particular lady comment on what a cute idea I was showing them. It was then that I realized that success doesn’t come necessarily from how much experience you have had prior to joining Stampin’ Up! Success comes more from finding or coming up with ideas you love and your enthusiasm about them. It’s contagious! People are attracted to enthusiasm!”

Over the last 24 years, Sandy has ridden through the ups and downs with the Stampin’ Up! corporate office, as well as in her own business. Through changes in the compensation plan to the ebbs and flows of the crafting industry, Sandy has faced challenges in keeping her downline together but finds value in consistency. “The best thing I do is provide an online group to keep us connected as well as quarterly meetings for my whole downline, and monthly meetings for those who are local.”

Sandy has also seen her business evolve over the years. “When I started this business in 1989, I only did workshops. Now times have changed and I do mostly classes and clubs, but I am always looking for workshops and other creative events that will help me meet new people.” And keeping those people coming back for more is one of Sandy’s specialties! At Sandy’s events, she has her guests wear nametags and take the time to introduce themselves to the group. “I think that it is important for people to know each other’s names so that they can feel more connected and get to know each other. When a new person comes to a class, we take a few minutes for each person to go around and introduce themselves. Connection is what brings people back!” And more importantly, Sandy’s customers feel her love and appreciation for them. They feel it in the customer

service she provides and in the time she spends getting to know them personally and attending to their needs. “And I also spend quality time looking for or creating projects that I think they will LOVE!” she says. When Sandy is teaching a new demonstrator how to turn her hobby into a business, she tells her to go “fishing.” Fishing takes patience, time, “and not everyone is going to bite,” she adds. She recommends holding an initial open house to introduce yourself, then start holding classes or other events consistently. “You may have to go through a number of friends or acquaintances before you find those who are interested, but set up a regular class and be consistent. A Stamp-a-Stack or stamp club would be a fun place to start. Then you hold them, even if you only have a few people. Those people have friends. Maybe offer $5 off the event if they bring a friend, then build from there.” Sandy’s “way” is to love what she does. “I love and value the people who are coming to my events. I love the fact that my Stampin’ Up! income is fully supporting my household. I love all the people who continually come into my life through this business.” And, of course, she adds, “I love all the travel that I have gotten to do through earning 22 incentive trips!”

28 © 1990–2013 STAMPIN' UP!

"How do you STAY IN TOUCH with your customers and keep track of each contact?" We’d love to know what questions you’d like other demonstrators to answer. Send your questions to magazine@ stampinup.com . *Watch for another question in an upcoming issue.

I use Outlook and enter each customer as a contact with all the fields filled in. In the “Notes” section I keep track of: the first contact (e.g. guest of Suzy Stamper) and the date; any tidbit of information about them (has three grandchildren in town, son plays basketball, etc.); their level of interest in booking and the business opportunity as indicated on their guest care card; and the amount of their order. Then I set the flag reminder to call them within a week of receiving their order. When I make that call, I note the date and the gist of the call. Then I set the reminder flag to contact her again in the future. Outlook is very faithful in reminding me to make the calls.

Sylvie Drader Senior Counselor Kitchener, Ontario I keep in touch with my customers (and potential customers) by preparing a monthly newsletter with promotional details, product features, class schedules, and tips & tricks. Some newsletters are hand-delivered, while others are e-mailed (depends on my customers’ preference and how often I see them in person). I pique their interest and encourage their creativity and they never seem to hesitate to contact me if they have questions about products, techniques, or promotions. It's a great tool for keeping in touch and keeping me sharp.

Jennifer Simpson Senior Associate Richmond Hill, Ontario I think the first and most important thing to do is make sure that you use the Customer Manager page that is provided by Stampin’ Up! You can store and update a lot of valuable information on each of your customers. I also make sure that I send e-mails with notifications of all sales and incentives. I think it is important to go to the customer either through e-mail or DBWS rather than wait for them to visit a blog or contact you. Whenever a customer contacts me, I make sure to return the e-mail promptly and save it so that I can review if I answered all of their questions.

When a customer comes to a class I take down info like their address, etc. I put them on my e-mailing list if they agree, and I also take down their birth date. I send out a birthday card to anyone who has attended a class in my home in the past 12 months. If I haven't heard from them in those 12 months I send out an “I Miss You” card and an incentive to come to a class. In their birthday cards I write on a sticky note so they have a card to send out again if they choose. I recently started sending a gift certificate for half off the price of a Stamp-AStack Class hoping to entice them to come back, or to thank them for being regular attendees.

Christi Waite Manger Hudsonville, Michigan I have used a free online reminder program at www.birthdayalarm.com for the last seven years with great success. It sends me an e-mail a week before the date, and then a reminder three days before. You can change the timing and frequency of the e-mails to suit your own needs. They have e-cards you can send, but I send homemade MDS ones or hand-stamped ones instead! This program has allowed me to be consistent in remembering my customers’ special days.

Lyssa Zwolanek Senior Manager Watertown, Wisconsin I like to make the most of the tools that Stampin’ Up! offers. I create class invitations in MDS, and send out weekly e-cards from my DBWS for my classes and events. I also use the monthly newsletter in my DBWS. I like how I can track my RSVPs, as well as who has opened and read my e-cards and newsletters. I keep notes on my customer contacts within their profile in Customer Manager.
