About the artist. Amirah Mohamad Yusof
Born in the bustling city of Singapore and raised in suburban Meanjin (Brisbane), Amirah Mohamad Yusof is an emerging local visual artist, photographer and architecture student at QUT. She moved to Brisbane when she was four years old and grew up in south-east suburban Brisbane. The Suburban Life of an Immigrant (series), 2022 explores living in Brisbane as an immigrant and highlights the challenges immigrants all over the world face when living in a western country.
The Suburban Life of An Immigrant explores the juxtaposition of living in suburban white Brisbane as an Asian Muslim immigrant. As a person of colour living in a predominantly white country, almost everyday reminds you that you are non-caucasion. The photographs within the series capture the contradiction between the subjects and their setting, almost making the subjects in the photographs seem out of place. As an emerging artist, I find it difficult to navigate the predominantly white local art scene where there is little creative spaces made by and for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour). There needs to be more inclusive local art spaces for this to happen. Most photographs were shot in Brisbane however, some photographs taken in NSW were included in this series*
