Metarch Studios is a design-intensive practice, specialising in Architecture, Interiors, Urbanism, and Landscape. As a team it aims to turn obstacles into design trajectory and explore opportunistic overlays between space, function, design, requirements, form, budget and materials. It is based in Ranchi and Bengaluru, with a background experience of over ten years. Metarch Studios has worked on a varied range of projects including banquet halls, penthouses, residences, apartments, restaurants, lounges, showrooms, offices, commercial and industrial buildings and also landscape projects.

Acknowledgement The internship opportunity I had with Metarch Studios was a great chance for learning and professional development. Therefore, I consider myself very privileged as I was provided with an opportunity to be a part of it. I am also grateful for having a chance to meet many wonderful people and professionals who led me through this internship period. I am using this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and special thanks to Ar. Anupam Deb who in spite of being extraordinarily busy with his duties, took time out to hear, guide and keep me on the correct path. I would also like to thank all the people that worked along with me with their patience and openness they created an enjoyable working environment. It is indeed with a great sense of pleasure and immense sense of gratitude that I acknowledge the help of these individuals. In addition, I would like to express my gratitude towards my family and friends for the encouragement and moral support which helped me in completion of my internship. Thank you.

For us every project is unique in its surroundings and we do not seek to bring a predetermined vocabulary to each project that comes to us. No matter how common the use – whether it is residential, hospitality, and office – every project has a distinct mix of site influences: geography, history, landscape, urban. We find some of our greatest design inspiration in the context. By working back and forth between the design of the building and analysis of the site, a strong connection can be developed between the two. We aim at our buildings and design being characterized by a clean, contemporary aesthetic, but this is not at the cost of richness in detail or experience. We believe our role as architects is to create a space that can elevate the quality of our day to day life – the way we inhabit and function.

LADY KC ROY MEMORIAL SCHOOL

Almost all of us have been here in our childhood and perhaps the closest memories we hold dear are not of significant events, but ironically of the insignificant ones. Of losing oneself to wonderment, to wander under the skies, to re-live in our vivid imagination of the make-believe and many more phrases that make the song of our lives.

The land parcel is of 2.35 acres. The construction is being done in phases and in response to what was already there. Located just outside the Urban periphery of Ranchi, the school lies at the edge of a rural landscape and a rapidly developing zone of the city. The school followed CBSE curriculum which has specific area requirements for classrooms, laboratories, library and other common spaces. It accommodates students from Pre nursery to 12th Standard. Each classroom is of 650 sq. ft. area, Vegetation along the building lines allow for cooling summer winds but block cold winter winds.

The plan for Senior Wing is conceived to depict the meandering nature of a child’s brain. It allows for a meander.

1 - SENIOR WING 2 - JUNIOR WING 3 - ADMIN & LAB BLOCK 4 - AMPHITHEATRE

Straight stairs consists of stairs in one direction. As a result, if a person falls from the top of the stairs, it can be quite severe and result in serious injuries.

Mini Football Court should be oriented roughly in a north-south direction to minimize the effects of a setting sun on players as fields that run east and west pose a problem for the players looking into the sun.

There is no provision for cross-ventilation in classrooms.

The facade greets you with bold, exposed bricks which gives a very natural effect and blends with the vegetation around. Concrete texture finish on a few surfaces readily complements the bricks and gives a warm, vernacular feeling. Minimal Glass is used on the facade, so heat trapped inside is reduced. The corridors are spaces where children readily play around and have the most memories about school with. The corridors have been planned in a manner that it connects all classrooms at one go. The sharp shadows of the Jaali in the corridor, beams of light through the slits and cutouts add to the experience, generating intrigue. A building; school; where the play of hiding and seek is perpetual.

The building is left unfinished in its exterior, that deliberately negates colour. And yet, the colour palette of the curious young minds of children is reflected in the doors, staircases and grilles. Red, Blue, Yellows and greens create pops of colour as accents in contrast with the brick and concrete. The same colors reappear in subtle pastels in the classroom interiors. A bright yellow metal staircase goes all the way from the ground to the top floor.

The lacing pattern in the facade invokes a sense of intrigue through the geometry. Using this, the eye levels are exploited and made exciting for children. Amphitheatre can accommodate 2000 people.

Exposed copper-wire cut bricks have been used in the entire block. The bricks have been procured from Vijayawada and Punjab.

Taking Detention Period to be 3 days. Total wastewater in 3 days = 475 X 3 = 1425 Litres Taking minimum capacity = 2000 Litres, Minimum Depth to not be less than 1.8 m. Sludge settled down/Person = 30 Litres/Year Sludge removal to be done once in every 2 years. Total Sludge = 30 X 5 X 2 = 300 Litres Total Tank Capacity = 2300 Litres Now, 1000 Litres = 1 cu.m. 2300 Litres = 2.3 cu.m. Area Required = 2.3/1.8 = 1.2 sq. m. Taking, L:B = 4:1 4B X B = 1.2 sq. m. B = 0.54 m. B should be minimum 750 mm. L = 4 X 0.75 = 3 m, B = 0.75 m, D = 1.8 + 0.3 = 2.1 m (Free board depth = 0.3 m) Tank Capacity= 3 X 2.1 X 0.75 = 4.725 cu.m. = 4725 Litres.

LIFT To help our clients in choosing which elevator category is right for them, we explained each of these categories and pointed out their advantages and disadvantages. The main difference between the machine room and machine roomless elevators is the fact that machine roomless elevators do not require a room for the traction machine and instead the traction machine is placed inside the building shaft. This removes the need to construct a machine room, which is ideal for buildings that are limited in available space or can accommodate a machine room due to the nature or design of the building.

One of the main advantages of MR elevators is that they produce less noise and vibration during operation, which affects the quality and comfort of the ride. This becomes especially apparent at high speeds, which is why MR elevators are recommended for speeds equal to or higher than 1.75m/s. MR elevators also have a much higher capacity than MRL elevators, this makes the MR elevator the only option for load capacities higher than 1150kg. Finally, since the machinery is placed inside the shaft in an MRL elevator, the elevator can be more compact, however, this also means that it is harder to access during repair and maintenance, this is especially true during motor failure.
