BAZAAR: the grey spaces within place
Urdu Bazaar & Meena Bazaar, New Delhi, India
year
spring 2015
This thesis explores the conditions, density and typology of bazaar space in India. With Laurie Baker’s Influence, it seeks to use similar construction methods and vernacular techniques for the people who inhabit the outskirts of a bazaar known as the Grey spaces. By doing so, this will better their involvement with the urban context, improve their living and working conditions and give them a sense of place.
/bǝ’zär/

Jama Masjid Mosque The structure reflects the diverse demographics of the surrounding area and tourists, locals, and indigenous people from the rural areas of India visit the mosque everyday. As an important religious and social meeting place, the structure is a focal point of the bazaar. Red Fort Occupying more than 200 acres of Old Delhi, Red Fort was used as a base for the higher social class. The Fort had its own market, public space, private quarters, and lush landscape. The materials play a key role in the way the process was easy to replicate to build such a massive structure during this time period. Emerging Tourist Area Overall, the context brings in many tourists from around the world to see Old Delhi. Pop-up markets fill the streets of this area to serve the tourists and locals. Tourism plays a large role in the lives of the local people and the success of the markets allows small and locally owned businesses to prosper and thrive.

STREET ANALYSIS [diagrammatic street]
This model diagrams the street and the activity going on within it. String represents people, rickshaws, animals, cars, bikes.
-using tarp from protection from climate -ruffled up at the ends -lack of tension, poor drainage -tied to the fence and then pulled away with tie downs
LATERAL SUPPORT -tie downs don’t allow horizontal movement -help the pulling away from the fence
ADAPTABLE ELEMENTS -beds, pallets, cots... -the vendor stand with the goods to sell -random pots, pans, Tupperware
PUBLIC/ PRIVATE & SECURITY -tarps during day roll up to allow sun and business to happen -tarp during night folds down allowing for privacy and sense of home -very low quality of light within space during the evening times
ECOLOGY -shrubs behind the living units provide shade -level of comfort brings a sense of energy and life

SOLUTION: kit of parts Shelter Relief
Cover from climate, weather and proper water easement is essential to the solution of the shelter relief. How each tarp can be adaptable and connected to other tarps around is important for expansion and growth for the users.
Masonry Unit
The unit is an element that needs to be used for weight, lateral support, and to create walls of privacy and screening. This needs to easily be multiplied to create as many as the user needs with local materials.

Final Site Plan
14
In the Street Master Plan there is a community area, known as the water house, that houses proper water for drinking, bathing, and washing dishes. The individual units are adaptable to the number of people per shelter and consists of living area, cooking area and selling area. It is a catalyst for the people and provides basic living needs while also providing community places and shared spaces. Most importantly, the Master Plan is built with local materials found around the bazaar and is therefore sustainable.

HARRY CALLAHAN MUSEUM: point, line, plane 02 place Reynoldstown, Atlanta, Georgia year
fall 2011
The Harry Callahan Museum showcases Harry Callahan’s photography and other works. Callahan is an artist who shows a strong sense of line and form while remaining aware of light and darkness. The design of this project takes similar concepts from his work and applies them to the overall building, hence point, line, plane. Proper diffusion of light was designed for the museum space through section sketches and physical modeling.

The proposal consists of multi-functional spaces that serve as view points & vertical/ horizontal connections to the library and museum. In the past, the ancient city was surrounded by a stone wall and monumental towers to protect the city from enemies. Presently, there are no distinct landmarks to connect the piazza and waterfront, so the proposal aims to bring vertical and horizontal structures to allow for views and functional space.

This project is an urban scale development that introduces a unique opportunity to create an environment in which people can learn and grow through the natural environment. The current conditions were analyzed using Zone, Path, Edge, Gateway and Node and designed with those filters in mind. After analysis the site called for a proper balance in residential, commercial, and fitness areas all connected by green paths.
ZONE 01 Current zones such as transportation, commercial, residential, and office define the blocks forming paths in between them.
02 PATH Existing paths such as the Beltline, railroads,
Deering Road, and Northside Drive are existing boundaries creating edges.

chair+HAUS: furniture design place Southern Polytechnic Woodshop year

fall 2012
This piece was designed and built without screws, bolts or hardware. The atypical details are the essence of the piece and the individual parts come together to create a unique and sturdy chair. Each piece was glue-laminated to reach proper thickness and then hand routed to create the unique details.

This piece was an experimental project that was chosen to understand and test what it takes to drill a proper hole while working with the constraints within the wood itself. For example, beginning with normal drill bits, the wood often blew out on the back side, removing structural integrity from the wood. Changing over to forstner bits, the wood was able to maintain its structural integrity and accept a clean hole.

Being the last lot on the cove and having a drastic slope, this project had many constraints on what could be done on the site. The design-build team, consisting of four young architects, designed & built this house from the ground up, processed all materials and managed the entire construction process. Using re-salvaged 100 year old barn wood for the exterior facade, this micro cabin is a hidden treasure in the woods that when encountered is in fact overwhelming in character and height albeit small in square footage. The interior is a 200 sq. ft. rustic contemporary design with very minimal furniture and detailing making for a clean environment.
