History of Bemidji Founded in 1897, Bemidji is the county seat of Beltrami County. The city’s name is derived from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) word for the lake, Bemejigamaug, meaning a lake with water (the Mississippi River) flowing through it. In the early 1890s, a settlement grew around Carson Trading Post on the south shore of Lake Bemidji. By 1900, Bemidji had 2,183 inhabitants.

Logging, the principal occupation at that time, attracted railroads, and railroad right-of-ways determined the locations of emerging towns. Bemidji has matured into a highly diversified region that continues to grow. www.BeltramiHistory.org.

Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox Folk tales about the adventures of giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his companion Babe the Blue Ox circulated in logging camps in the early 20th century before making their way into print as beloved children’s stories. For years, Bemidji has been recognized as the home of Paul and Babe. Constructed in 1937, Bemidji’s statues of Paul and Babe can be found outside the Tourist Information Center. The Paul Bunyan statue is eighteen feet tall and weighs two and a half tons above the footings. Each year, thousands of visitors stop by to be photographed with these historic statues and wave to the webcam. www.Bemidji.org

Just a short walk from the Tourist Information Center stands the statue of Shaynowishkung, also known as Chief Bemidji. Born around 1834, this respected leader endured tremendous loss after 1888 when settlers moved to the area.

A skilled orator, Shaynowishkung exemplified Anishinabe values and advocated for peace. His statue and the four plaques that accompany it were constructed to encourage the healing of all people and the restoration of human dignity.

Experienc Cultur The Arts On stage, in its galleries, shops, streets, and concert halls, Bemidji celebrates the arts every day.

There are endless opportunities to take in the visual arts. Bemidji is home to a nationally recognized Sculpture Walk that features eight murals and an ever-changing group of sculptures throughout the downtown. The First Friday Art Walk is a monthly event during which many galleries, organizations, businesses, and restaurants host open receptions and exhibits. The Watermark Art Center features local, regional, and national artists and hosts the annual Art in the Park each July on the shores of Lake Bemidji. The Bemidji area is a great place to appreciate Ojibwe arts and culture. Bemidji State University’s Award-winning Summer Ojibwe Immersion Camp gives students a two-week immersive experience in Ojibwe culture. Campers learn about Ojibwe language, history, arts, and traditions. The American Indian Resource Center (AIRC) at BSU offers a gathering place central to the area’s three largest reservations. Take a tour or peruse educational resources and a collection of art at the AIRC.

Leech Lake Reservation (Gaa-zagaskwaajimekaag) The Leech Lake Indian Reservation is one of seven Ojibwe (Chippewa) reservations in Minnesota and encompasses two of the state’s largest lakes—Leech Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish. The Leech Lake Nation has nearly 8,000 citizens. Eighty-five percent of the Leech Lake Reservation falls within the boundaries of the Chippewa National Forest, and tribal members only own four percent of their own reservation. Tribal culture remains vibrant at Leech Lake. Many people actively participate in traditional dance, music, art, and ceremonial life. Leech Lake is also home to Minnesota’s first Ojibwe language immersion school, Niigaane.

Red Lake Reservation (Miskwaagamiiwi-zaaga'iganiing) The Red Lake Indian Reservation covers 1,259 square miles in parts of nine counties in northern Minnesota and has over 10,000 tribal citizens. The main reservation is unallotted tribal land, meaning that no individuals own title to it. That land is held in trust for the benefits of all tribal members, making Red Lake unique among all the reservations in Minnesota. The village of Ponemah on the Red Lake Reservation is a traditional community that follows tribal religious beliefs and funerary practices. It is home to nearly 400 Ojibwe language speakers.

Land and timber speculators successfully swindled most of the land on the reservation out of tribal hands. Even today, tribal members own less than nine percent of their own reservation.

Traditional tribal culture eroded significantly due to a variety of assimilation policies, but in the past twenty years, tribal members have achieved amazing revitalization of traditional customs.

Bemidji claims to be the Curling Capital of the World. The Bemidji Curling Club has had at least one representative on the U.S. Olympic Team since 2002, and the 2006 men’s U.S. Olympic curling team captured the bronze medal in Torino, Italy. The Bemidji Curling club has six sheets of ice and hosts multiple bonspiels throughout the season. Men, women, and children can all compete.

Golfers find some of the state’s most beautiful courses among towering pines and sparkling lakes. Many even catch a glimpse of a deer or two strolling across the fairway. Golfers of every skill level will enjoy playing at any of the six area courses, which offer challenging championship tournament level play and fun par-three short courses.

Fishing F ish hing With some of the deepest, clearest lakes in the state, the Northwoods of Minnesota is the best place for fishing and ice fishing. Great reproduction rates, state fishery stocking efforts, and sensible catch limits make our lakes exciting to fish. Lake Bemidji and surrounding lakes are best known for walleye, bass, perch, northern pike, muskie, crappie, and bluegill. There are designated trout lakes and streams as well as bass and muskie-managed lakes for the serious or casual fisherman. Just sixteen miles east of Bemidji you’ll find nine picturesque lakes connected through the Cass Lake chain. There are several public piers in the Bemidji Lakes Area, including a new, wheelchairaccessible kids' fishing pier for fun family outings.

Water Sports

With the turn of the leaves in the fall, the limitless hunting opportunities take center stage. The forests, lakes and area farmlands provide habitat for deer, partridge, ruffed and sharptail grouse, black bear, duck and geese. The result is hunters taking home plenty of game, memories and stories. Sportsmen can find some of the best hunting for trophy whitetail deer and black bear. Personal guides are available but should be contacted in advance.

Bemidji Trap & Skeet Club, established in 1928, offers a modern clubhouse, five lighted trap fields, wobble trap and opens for the season on April 2. The club house is open to the public, offering open, registered shoots and youth shooting opportunities throughout the season.

The sun of spring and summer shines on water sports.

Visitors can boat, pontoon, sail, canoe, jet ski, kayak, wind surf, swim or water ski. Lake Bemidji itself has six public boat accesses and four public swimming beaches, as well as several rental options. The beaches include Cameron Park, Diamond Point Park, Nymore Park and Lake Bemidji State Park. The best swimming is generally from late June to mid August, and the average high lake temperature is 73 degrees.

Bird Watching The Bemidji Lakes Area offers plenty of opportunities for both the veteran and the newly intrigued bird spotter. The area contains vast woodlands and waterways that are part of the Mississippi and Red River Flyways, home to more than 240 migratory and resident bird species. Several species of gulls, waterfowl, herons, grebes and osprey may be seen, including the daily sightings of the majestic bald eagle and our state bird, the loon.

Minnesota Finlandia Ski Marathon The annual Minnesota Finlandia Ski Marathon is held every February on the beautiful Buena Vista Ski Area trail system. Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival The 72nd annual Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival takes place June 30-July 5th near the Sanford Center on the shore of Lake Bemidji. The Dragon Boat Festival, held the first weekend in August, draws thousands to the waterfront each year. Each Dragon Boat team consists of 20 paddlers, a steersperson, and a drummer.

The race runs 450–500 meters in length with teams racing every twelve minutes. The festivities begin Friday with a Parade of Teams opening ceremony and sprint races. Saturday is a full day of racing, music, kids’ activities, awards, and closing ceremonies.

Bemidji City Parks The city of Bemidji is home to sixteen family-friendly parks where you will find playgrounds, pavilions, a 22,000-square-foot skateboard park, an outdoor hockey rink, trails, a disc golf course, basketball courts, picnic areas, boat ramps, and beautiful beaches.

Lake Bemidji State Park Located on the north shore of Lake Bemidji,i, this state park offers lake country recreation as well as the sights and sounds of the northern forest.

Its 1,688 acres have something for everyone in every season: swimming, hiking, biking, pontoon boat tours, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and abundant birding opportunities.

The Great River Road The Great River Road Scenic Byway is a collection of roads that follows the course of the Mississippi River. It begins at the Mississippi River Headwaters in Itasca State Park, just 30 miles south of Bemidji, and extends to the Gulf of Mexico.

Three of Minnesota’s largest lakes are located along the Minnesota stretch of th the Great River Road: Cass, Leech, and Winnibigoshish.

Itasca State Park Established in 1891 to conserve its giant pines es from logging, Itasca State Park is Minnesota’ss oldest state park. The park includes 32,000 acres with more than 100 lakes and 6,000 acress of old-growth forest. Itasca State Park offers a variety of camping and lodging opportunities. Lady Slipper Scenic Byway Pine and aspen are intersp interspersed with lakes and river on the Lady Slipper Sl Scenic Byway through the Chippew Chippewa National Forest. Enjoy biking on the n new Migizi Trail or walk along one of Cass Lake’s sandy beaches. While you enjoy natural n attractions and bountiful wildlife, you may want to explore Knutson Dam or the Rabideau Civilian Conserv Conservation Corps Camp.

Chippewa National Forest In 1908, the 1.6 million-acre Chippewa National Forest was the first national forest established east of the Mississippi River. More than 1,300 lakes, 925 miles of streams, and 400,000 acres of wetlands can be found within the forest. It is also one of the largest breeding areas for bald eagles and, as a habitat for whitetail deer, ruffed grouse, and waterfowl, is a great hunting destination. With 298 miles of non-motorized trails and 315 miles of motorized trails, visitors have ample opportunities to hike, bike, hunt, snowmobile, or ski.

The Lost Forty Big Bog Big Bog State Recreation Area has been called Minnesota’s last true wilderness. This unique land feature contains the largest peat bog in the lower 48 states, and the largest, best-developed water track in the United States. One mile of elevated, wheelchairaccessible boardwalk allows visitors a close look at rare orchids and pitcher plants. The Big Bog also has an updated campground with a sandy beach, trails, picnic grounds, and winterized camper cabins.

Located in the Chippewa National Forest northeast of Blackduck, The Lost Forty is 144 acres of virgin red and white pines that escaped logging thanks to a mapping error. A one-mile, self-guided trail winds its way through these majestic trees. Two or three people can hold hands to surround und the enormous trunk of one of these 350-year-old pines.

The summer season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the center is open Monday – Friday 8AM – 5PM, Saturday 10AM -4PM and Sundays 11AM -3PM. In the offseason they are open Monday – Friday 8AM-5PM. Aside from many Paul Bunyan artifacts the center is a great resource with an abundant supply of brochures, trail maps, state maps, and area visitor guides. As a State of Minnesota Travel Affiliate the TIC carries Explore Minnesota publications including the statewide guide and newspapers.

The staff are very helpful with directions, suggestions, and any question visitors may have. The center is also a great resource for relocation information.
