Rationale In a group of 4, work as a team to create a convincing lie through design. Convince a chosen target audience of a lie, executing your understanding of creating design work that could be used in the real world, and placing design in a public space. The outcome needs to result in a form of reaction from the public that can be recorded and documented to represent the groups success for the brief.

Research The chosen target audience for this project is Leeds Arts University Students. This way final outcomes can be quickly executed and documented with the given time for the brief. The driving point of the lie is to convince students they will be able to get free food from a chosen food supplier. They will need to sign in through an online portal in order to receive this offer, which becomes a successful way to monitor and contact participants before the “event to inform them of the lie. Primary imagery was taken of two popular food places of choice from the group, Bakery 164 and Belgrave Music Hall. These photos helped identify key aspects that make them well known to LAU students, and convincing aesthetics that could be used to match the venue. Group member Bronte executed rough initial concepts for Bakery 164, incorporating colours from primary imagery.

Initial Ideas Belgrave Music Hall was the chosen location for the brief. Looking back at primary imagery and looking at their social media, the most prominent visual from the venue is their neon lights. The neon lights will play a large part on the visuals for the design work of the brief, making it the focus of attention on the design outcomes. The well known aesthetic of the venue will act as the convincer to the target audience. With the short amount of time given for the brief, the design needed to be finalised and agreed on, so that it could be placed out in Uni for two days to get a better reaction. The design will be simple yet eye catching through the use of neon lights inspired type, the lie will be executed through a poster design, and and online sign up portal to monitor the reactions of the students.

Development During the development process I took the lead role of the group, designing the work and still verifying with the team. To try and make sure that students wouldn’t go through with the lie and go to Belgrave, we made sure and stated that in order to get the free food and drink you needed to receive a confirmation email - which they would never get. They would receive an email straight away after signing up to state that the whole concept was a lie for this project this would prevent any conflict with the Belgrave Venue.

Production The overall design was made to be simple, with the neon light type being the most pivotal design aspect - this allowed executing the design both physically and digitally a lot more convincing to viewers. The design was created to be mobile friendly as well. For the online portfolio, I had to change my adobe name to ‘The Belgrave Music Hall’, so that my name wouldn’t be seen when the link was sent out and shared to students. The posters were placed in heavy traffic areas at University, and on the main noticeboard in the canteen to offer larger exposure.

Final Outcome Visually linking to the Belgrave Venue, the Tell a Lie brief was created to coax people into believing that Belgrave was offering a free burger and drink exclusively to Leeds Arts University students. The final deliverables consisted of a Poster Design and Website sign up page (mobile friendly). 82 people signed up using the online portal, indicating that they were convinced by the design work. Although the outcome of the project was a bit controversial, It still highlighted how the design work was something that could be easily taken as a real offer - overall making it a successful project with the short time frame.
