Rationale Collaborate with photography student Jasmine Benedict, to create branding that can be easily executed over social media and other promotional assets, and reflect Jasmines photography and personality. Execute the branding on 10 promotional packages that will be sent out to photography professionals. Content of promotional package: - Envelope - Business Card - Vinyl Stickers - Postcards

Initial Ideas Initial ideas were shared by Jasmine, these concepts were very different from each other; so the strongest ideas were chosen and further explored in sketches. Jasmines work is rough and raw, the behind the scenes of gritty nights in Leeds and an exploration of rebellious youth. The grittiness of her work needs to translate into her branding, something that creates a mood and isn’t clean and simplistic. Her work is heavily portraits and facial expressions. One prominent aspect that is used in a majority of her work is graffiti; either in the foreground or background it plays a part in her portfolio. The use of graffiti inspired a majority of initial concepts and sketches, forming a ‘tag’ like style.

Development Initial concepts were further developed and digitized, looking at blackletter typefaces which reflected the style of the photography. Development ideas were placed on business cards to get an understanding for composition. Using photography on the business card was explored but the versatility of the work proved difficult to represent Jasmines work as a whole. Exploring the composition of letters to form faces out of J and B (initials) was most successful when evaluating with Jasmine.

Development Forming a face out of Jasmines initials was the strongest concept. This design was further pushed and developed, incorporating the letter P for photography created a stronger logo face. At this stage of development the idea to have a logo that could be spray painted onto any deliverable was created, this would be useful for Jasmine after University, to make promotional content and business cards out of any card she can find. This idea of spray painting the logo then inspired the experimentation with creating the logo out of spray paint. Letters from the initials were spray painted, scanned and then digitally composed to form strong logo outcomes. Two logo designs were created one with and without counters, the one with counters would be a design that can’t be spray painted but screen printed. Jasmine preferred the logo without the counters so production time and methods needed to be changed. The colour chosen for the colour was neon pink to reflect with Jasmines past work and personal preference.

Production The branding package needed to be screen printed onto the chosen envelopes. The silver bubble wrap envelopes were chosen to reflect the style of her photography, and also form a contract with the chosen neon pink. When screen printing the envelopes the screen needed to be bled after each print, to prevent any thick ink application - applying white ink to the binder helped form an opaque print that can be seen on the silver envelopes. The envelopes chosen are not only unique to the branding but also practical as the bubble wrap packaging will protect any work sent out to professionals. Due to the chosen logo being one that can’t be screen printed, the colour pink needed to be changed as neon pink cannot be printed in CMYK - so the colour was changed to magenta, to form a consistent print over all the deliverables.

Final Outcome The Branding was well received by Jasmine Benedict. The logo compliments her work and style, and forms a consistent look across all the deliverables. The hands on element of the logo brings together a branding that is unique to that of other photography logos, becoming a refreshing outcome for the project. Instead of sticking to having all deliverables digitally made, the envelopes, that were personally screen printed, again adds to the uniqueness of the branding, and something that will catch professionals eyes. “The collaboration I had with Ami in order to generate some promotional material for me exceeded my expectations. From the beginning I felt as though our ideas bounced off each other as I believe we both has a similar vision of what we wanted to create, which I think can be rare. She responded very well and quickly to the feedback I had for example when I suggested that I wanted the logo to have a grittier aesthetic. I felt as though she understood my style and produced work that really represented me as an artist. It was my first collaboration with a graphic designer and most definitely a positive one.
