SANITATION MATTERS The initiatives of AMMACHI Labs and MA Math in Empowering Women and Communities through Sustainable Solutions

DID YOU KNOW? more than

HALF in the WORLD

of the people who practice

OPEN DEFECATION

RURAL INDIA

reside in

Over 70% of the country’s population lives in rural India where open defecation is extremely prevalent. Disease, poor hygiene, safety issues and lack of privacy are major issues. Sanitation is a basic human right, which is why AMMACHI Labs is taking it’s proven methods into the field.

TACKLING THE PROBLEM WITH TECHNOLOGY AMMACHI Labs uses innovative technology for social impact in rural communities. Our methods include combining computerized vocational skill training and life enrichment education. As of May 2014, we have delivered training to over 4,000 women throughout India.

Masonry Training and Life Enrichment Classes using Tablets

More than 1 in 3 women in the world lack access to safe sanitation.

EMPOWERMENT BEGINS HERE

Toilet Building in Bhoi Sahi Village

The outreach now extends to villages in 21 states across India. The training includes computerized vocational courses in masonry and plumbing, along with classes on the importance of personal health, hygiene, water awareness and life skills. Many women have never had the basic rights to a private space for bathing and relieving themselves. As they began to understand the potential of having a private bathroom and the benefits of hygiene and sanitation, they welcomed the programs and became ambassadors of change.

Of these, 526 million women have no choice but to go to the toilet out in the open.

A few empowered individuals were enough to create a transformation in the villages. The outreach is in full swing in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, Marahrashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Punjab, Telangana, Seemandhra and Karnataka. Using this model, AMMACHI Labs plans to empower 3000 households on sanitation awareness and fundamental life skills all over India. The potential impact is 30,000 people in over 21 states by the fall of 2015 with plans to scale up the next coming years. www.ammachilabs.org #WEsanitation
