THE OFFICIAL A.R.C. NEWS December 2015
It’s impossible to start this newsletter without talking about the snow, or more precisely the lack of it, in the Alps right now. Skiing white carpets on green hillsides in December isn’t unheard of, but we’re all praying that the snow comes soon. Particularly because we have a catalogue to shoot photos for! The last couple of months at Amplid have been hectic to say the least. Amplid’s team riders have been working themselves to the bone representing Amplid. A real highlight is Noah being crowned as European Skier of the Year by Downdays Magazine’s readers. Last month Amplid released Rookie Season, a four part series featuring Cartel team rider Kevin Salonius and his voyage of skiing discovery. If you haven’t seen it yet you should tune-in as soon as possible! Good reviews continue to roll-in from the media: It was a real bonus to receive an Editor’s Pick award from freeski magazine Newschoolers for the Hill Bill.
Off the hill there’s lots of momentum at the moment. Despite injuries to Flo and Gregor on riding day, the annual sales meeting was a lot of fun and the new format proved very fruitful. The Blank Plank Project is a small ski and snowboard shaping initiative we’re very pleased to drop later this month and if you read this newsletter to the end you’ll get a sneak-peak. And finally, if your Amplid knowledge isn’t at Mastermind levels just yet, Inside Edge, a six part series by the Ski Club of Great Britain, will get you up to speed. Start praying for snow!
PRODUCT REVIEWS
ANTIDOTE In October, Amplid hosted Newschoolers Editor Twig in Stubai for a handful of testing days. Although thinner park skis aren’t his usual choice he got along just fine with the Antidotes. Here’s an exert from his review: “Essentially if you like the way a mid-fat ski rides but want something easier to spin fast in the park, these are your babies. I don‘t do much in the way of spinny tricks but these are the first park skis I‘ve ridden that really gelled with the way I like to ski park, and make it feel fun/easy and not like I‘m forcing the skis.” www.newschoolers.com/reviews/4268/Antidote#vDUS7BbK845riIbi.99
HILL BILL October might not the optimum time for putting powder skis through their paces, but if a fat ski can work on early season glacier, the chances are that nipple-deep powder won’t cause too many problems. Twig also selected the Hill Bill as an Editor’s Pick! “I‘d definitely recommend these as a pow ski to anyone skiing a range of conditions. If you‘re in Europe and you aren‘t just a backcountry jump skier, I‘d say these are the number one choice from what I‘ve skied. It might be slightly easier to land your switch tricks on other skis out there but for ripping around, doing some jibbing, dropping some cliffs and generally skiing the whole mountain after a snow fall, these are a fantastic choice.” www.newschoolers.com/reviews/4256/Hill-Bill#Y2B3zYXooEP4l1d6.99

STRICTLY BUSINESS BLANK PLANK PROJECT Amplid has jumped on the “DIY” shaping bandwagon and is producing a snowboard, ski and splitboard blank. Creating blanks from which a ski or snowboard shape can be crafted enables Peter and the team to experiment with new shaping ideas without the prohibitive cost of prototyping, and it’s a fun project for powder fanatics who want to give shaping a bash. Retailers that are interested in stocking the items or who want to give DIY shaping a go t hemselves should contact gregor.common@amplid.com for pricing.
BLANK PLANK WEEKENDER From the 29th to the 31st of January 2016 Amplid is running a weekend of shaping and shredding weekend at the Backyard in the Zillertal Valley, Austria. The three day event, which is open to the public, will feature shaping seminars and a tool-up workshop where attendees can cut and finish their own powder shredding design. Tickets for the event are extremely limited; more information will follow in the coming days.
INSIDE EDGE Last winter the Ski Club of Great Britain followed Amplid’s office team around for a number of weeks, filming a documentary about the process of bringing skis and snowboards to market. The six part series, which features in-depth interviews with Amplid’s Peter Bauer and the team, gives some incredible insight into what differentiates Amplid from the other brands on the market. TEAM NEWS NOAH ALBALADEJO The big news this month is that Noah Albaladejo, a Cartel team riders for the last three years, has been voted as Downdays Magazine’s “European Skier of the Year”. Noah, who comes from Andorra, has been impressing for years but since his win at the B&E Invitational in March he’s been under the spotlight too. A string of inspiring video edits through the summer with the likes of Henrik Harlaut and Magnus Graner went viral and put the writing on the wall. Noah is hot property right now!
ROOKIE SEASON Kevin Salonius is a 22 year old freeskier from the outskirts of Helsinki, Finland. Until last season Kevin’s skiing had been confined to Serena Resort, a small hill on the outskirts of Helsinki with 50m and 100% artificial snow. Last season Amplid sent Kevin on a voyage of skiing discovery. We put him through his paces in a variety of new scenarios like freeriding in the Austrian Alps, backcountry freestyle in Switzerland and a spot on the starting list at the famous Total Fight in Grandvalira, Kevin’s first pro contest. Start with episode 1 and find-out how he got on. www.amplid.com/blog/video/rookie-season-episode-1
PHILIP DE PAOLI’S SEASON EDIT Philip takes his park skills to the mountains of the Vorarlberg and the historic streets of Bregenz and shows why he’s one of Austria’s most exciting young talents. Adam Graf takes care of the filming and editing with his usual cinematic style. www.amplid.com/blog/video/philip-de-paoli-season-edit
STEFAN JOECHL For the last couple of years Stefan Joechl has been a force to be reckoned with on the FWQ. Stefan’s fine blend of freestyle flavour and big-mountain aggression helps him to achieve regular podiums at three and four star events. After three years of representing Amplid as a proform rider Stefan has earned himself a place on Amplid’s Ambush team. This year Stefan will once again compete in the FWQ and also take on the role of assisting Peter in creating innovative, high performance products for big-mountain skiers.
