S
ince 2004, innovation and quality have been at the heart of Amplid. This new line of boards remains true to those values, but it delivers them with more focus and confidence than any preceding collection. In recent years, a growing demand for innovations with real benefits is making increasing numbers of snowboarders aware of Amplid. Just a single turn on an UNW8 or a handful of strides on the Milligram reveal the potential payback of riding such outstanding products. It’s why the demo tent has become Amplid’s proving ground and word-of-mouth its most effective marketing tool. Building boards for customers who demand extraordinary products gives me freedom. I’m not under pressure to create commercial giants with “mass-appeal” that sell in their thousands. I have the freedom to invest my time in developing snowboards with undeniable character, which increase the heartbeat and expand the parameters of materials and geometry: I am in my element doing this. Refining the range meant dropping some classics and introducing some new ideas. Rooted in 30 years of carving know-how, the Centrifugal Collection is a three-board-quiver for riders with an edge fetish. New and retro geometry ideas and AntiphaseTM, a pioneering damping technology, come together in this timeless capsule collection which will blow away expectations. And because nothing ever stands still at Amplid, my team and I have meticulously tweaked every board in the line to improve them further. Snowboarders eyes are open to new ideas like never before. As a champion of innovation and quality, I believe that Amplid has never been more relevant than now.
Conviction meets innovation

he Creamer offers a middle-ground between big-mountain bravado and freeride flow. Its directional, lightly tapered outline shape was designed to work in the broadest range of conditions, so that supreme floatation isn’t at the cost of lack-lustre edge-hold and vice versa. Flowing like water through untracked forests and scoring arcs across corduroy are all in a day’s work for the Creamer. Its volume-packed, smoothly-rising tip geometry irons-out bumps and generates unbelievable floatation in deep snow. Directional Cruise Camber loads the Creamer’s tail with extra power for stomping landings and spraying turns. Targeted placement of Basalt and Carbon reinforcement add stiffness and damping in critical areas to aid stability in harrowing terrain and predictability in choppy snow conditions.
N
ever get caught-out by unexpected powder days or sweat-it riding into new jumps with the Paradigma beneath your feet. Dependable and familiar, but lively and exciting to ride too, the Paradigma feels right straight out of the shrink-wrap. Last winter’s geometry overhaul convinced the critics; feeling like a true-twin on groomed snow with the benefits of directional tip shaping and Directional Cruise Camber in powder. A tip-to-tail Carbon Pop Band and Basalt Suspension Strips add the right amount of pop and damping where it’s necessary to optimise board control. The Paradigma’s edge-hold is a match for any icy halfpipe wall. We should apologise. Now the Paradigma has an additional pair of inserts behind the rear foot, for extra set-back on epic powder days, your quiver has become obsolete.

asy and instinctive, the Stereo makes snowboarding so damn simple that you can refocus your mind on seeking out side-hits, popping huge ollies and boning-out tricks like it’s ’95 again. The Stereo’s Hybrid-V profile combines mega pop, by placing positive camber areas beneath the feet, with the loose, catch-free feeling that comes from placing rocker at the waist. We added a Carbon Pop Band from tip-to-tail for extra ollie power and it has a Sintered 7 base for a smooth glide. Morning Freshies or cruising park, the Stereo’s blunted true twin shape and All-Terrain Tips can handle it all.

he Pillow Talk’s bloated dimensions are unusual, but so is the way it rides: Riding a twin-like board with unnatural floatation powers is a trip! Amplid’s Jekyll and Hyde shaping philosophy is the secret: Inflating the waistline and adding smoothrising tips generates mind-boggling floatation in deep snow. Just 7mm of board taper is enough to sink the tail and lift the nose out of trouble without setback. Its short running length makes the ultra-wide Pillow Talk jaw-droppingly agile in deep snow. Energized with a Carbon Pop Band, the Pillow Talk has enough pop and resistance to snap ollies and stick landings. Its new symmetrical Camrock profile, a first on Amplid’s snowboards, places a small camber cavity between the bindings which enhances grip for harder snow and stiffens the flex pattern in all the right places.

or the women that guide the troop on a powder day and smoke the boys down every black trail, there’s the LoveLife. Far more badass than its name would suggest, this little pocket rocket features the same materials, tech and powerful feel as Amplid’s demanding men’s snowboards. Amplid’s design team took the Paradigma, a legendary all-mountain performer, brought in the waist by a centimeter and fine-tuned the flex for lighter riders. Targeted reinforcements include an explosive Carbon Pop Band to invigorate the flex and tranquilizing Basalt Suspension Strips to damp destabilizing lumps and bumps. Directional Cruise Camber is a hybrid that blends a powerful camber cavity through most of the running length with a touch of early rise in the nose. This time-proven recipe perfectly balances hard snow performance with autopilot powder cruising.
S
oft and easy to ride, the GoGo makes learning intuitive and riding fun. Ideal for inexperienced women snowboarders, the GoGo’s forgiving nature, nurtures progression. Raised contact points and a soft flex pattern cut the tumble-count, aiding quick and painless improvement to your snowboarding. Its all-terrain abilities originate from Hybrid-V: This rocker dominant bend, which has sections of energy-charged camber beneath the bindings, balances hard snow grip with powder day floatation. And for the budding-freestylers, this lively “best of both world’s” hybrid camberline loves to pop, press, butter and pivot flat land tricks and launch from park jumps and sidehits. Its low maintenance Extruded 4 base material and hard-wearing Rockwell steel edges complete a snowboard which will support progression, winter-after-winter, for years to come.

or more than 30 years I’ve been addicted to the centrifugal forces generated by turning a snowboard. The deep, thigh burning compression at the apex and the weightlessness of being slingshot out of a carve into the next, are sensations completely unique to snowboarding. I find it funny that something so fundamental to snowboarding should be in or out of fashion, but trends are, and always have been, part of our sport. The last time carving was this cool I had a pony tail and I wore a one-piece, which at the time were both the height of fashion. In the 25 winters since, I’ve learned a lot about designing snowboards; how geometry, flex pattern and materials can be manipulated to create different performance parameters. Taking these learnings and creating snowboards that feel confident and soulful when carving has been a priority in every snowboard that has ever carried the Amplid name, but now I feel the time is right for something extra special. With the Centrifugal Collection, my vision was to create a series of snowboards with different shapes and characters, but which all maximise the thrill of “on-edge” snowboarding. This flagship threesome combines unique geometry with the most cutting-edge materials in snowboarding. The result is a quiver of snowboards with shapes designed for different terrain which, without exception, carve through hard, soft and choppy conditions like a hot knife through butter.

ith its heavy taper, retro tail and Crust Buster 3D nose shaping the Surfari is the deep snow specialist in the Centrifugal Collection. Its pow-centric geometry boosts floatation and agility, but despite its unambiguous appearance, the Surfari rips on packed snow conditions too. By placing AntiphaseTM Technology in the Surfari’s low-rising nose, Amplid can keep chatter, which normally plagues rocker noses, to a minimum. Unaffected by the lumps and bumps and armed with a relaxed 9m sidecut, the Surfari is truly capable of carving turns anywhere. To label the Surfari a pow board is totally unfair, because no matter if the snow conditions are chest deep blower or manmade groomers, you’ll relish every turn you rail on the Surfari!

or more than 10 years the UNW8 has set a standard for edge-orientated snowboards. Loaded with Amplid’s signature HEXO2 honeycomb construction and Amplid’s premium Sintered 7 HD base, its hallmark characteristics of vapor-weight construction and brutal performance make other high-end snowboards irrelevant. Now, as part of Amplid’s Centrifugal Collection, the latest incarnation of the UNW8 is upgraded with AntiphaseTM Technology. AntiphaseTM is an advanced damping system which neutralizes vibrations, without sapping pop and life from its flex. As smooth and controlled as a Bullet Train at terrifying speeds in every terrain, the UNW8 will push you beyond your comfort zone, in comfort.

eter Bauer’s soulful, surf-inspired carving style inspired the public to fall in love with carving the first time around. Designed by Peter, the Pentaquark, with its futuristic geometry and construction, breathes new life into the “carving board” concept. A little extra width at the feet makes deep carves possible without ridiculous binding angles. Full length Pop Camber transforms the Pentaquark into a coiled spring, bursting with energy and ready to catapult its rider out of each turn and into the next. HEXO2 strips unnecessary weight from the construction for a dynamic and highly responsive board feel. Squaring-off the tail, like a race board, maximises the Pentaquark’s effective edge for next level edge hold. Its All-Terrain nose cavity adds deep snow capability while AntiphaseTM reigns-in tip chatter to keep the Pentaquark’s edges engaged and holding speed. Release the centrifugal animal in you!

mbassadors, mountain guides, internet forums and test days; each year feedback and inspiration from every credible source is painstakingly collected and contemplated to evolve and improve the Milligram. Neat, little tweaks and huge innovations are what keep its weight and ride superior. Every trick in the book is used to keep this weight-weenie as light and as durable as possible. Carbon fiber, which has an unbelievable stiffness to weight ratio, replace conventional fiberglass. Our secret recipe BBP core not only cuts weight, but helps to damp carbon’s nervous character. Tanga Tech reduces chipping and slashes 250g of unnecessary weight. New Powder Pontoon, a band of UD carbon running from tip-to-tail along each board half, and additional reinforcement beneath the climbing wires increase spanning-strength reducing the risk of a dreaded snowhole snap. Amplid’s split-specific edge tune and Karakoram’s new UltraClips round-off the improvements.

fter experiencing the shocking weight advantage of the Milligram’s construction, it’s impossible to revert to heavier alternatives. The Millisurf is the choice for splitters who want the performance orientated materials and features of the Milligram in a more surfy board shape. Carbon laminates, a BBP core and low viscosity resin, also known as the holy trinity of splitboard construction, strip weight like it’s going out of fashion, making ascents fast and painless. The tapered swallow-tail shape of the Surfari, with its unique three-dimensional Crust Buster Nose, transform this thoroughbred climber into the ultimate split for pillaging powder. Innovative thinking is how Amplid approaches durability: Tanga Tech, Glass Impact Pads and Powder Pontoon are three cleverly placed reinforcements which solve the problem of chipping, crack propagation and bending failure which can plague lightweight carbon splitboards… but not this one.

he backcountry is an unpredictable environment which hides changeable snow-conditions and challenging terrain around every corner. You won’t always ride Hollywood pillow lines and snow-laden spines; sometimes the reality is an icy traverse or a sketchy, wind-affected drop-in. But don’t despair, when conditions get tough, the Creamer always proves its worth. Designed from time-earned experience, the Creamer Split handles a broad range of conditions and excels in powder too. Its Directional Cruise Camber, Amplid’s freeride staple, combines precise camber with a broad, distinctive, early-rise nose. Edging down icy couloirs, it’s the Creamer’s restrained taper and dependable camber, which extends through the tail of the board, that allow every centimetre of effective edge to be exploited for secure, reliable edge-hold. Basalt Suspension Strips are there to take the edge off unwanted chatter. In touring mode, the Creamer Split‘s underfoot camber distributes pressure evenly along each ski for consistent skin traction. Thanks to Its smooth nose cavity, breaking trail after a snowfall quickly becomes second nature.

xtended your pow-hunting range with short skinning missions, or pioneer further into the backcountry with the LoveLife Split’s lightweight, well thought-out design. Based on the mountain-conquering LoveLife, the Split’s shape and well-matched Direction Cruise Camber profile strike the perfect balance between control and maximizing deep snow enjoyment. It’s true, there are lighter splitboards, but very few boards deliver such a well-rounded package with such a reasonable price tag. On the construction front, the LoveLife’s full-wrap steel edges are essential for grip during tricky traverses and durability for rocky climbs. Its Voile insert pattern is the industry standard and features on all Amplid splitboards: It is compatible with bindings from most manufacturers, including Voile, Karakoram and Spark R&D. New UltraClips, the second generation of Karakoram’s market-leading board clips, not only look slick, they offer the best mix of durability and performance.

THE SCIENCE
Antiphase™ is a brand-new technology, developed in-house by Amplid, which reduces vibrations, improving board stability. Unlike conventional damping, which relies on rubber elastomers to reduce vibrations, Antiphase™ is a multidirectional composite layer bonded to a non-Newtonian material, which is placed between the board’s or ski’s tip and binding. It disrupts the natural frequency of a ski/snowboard, stopping vibrations which otherwise amplify and end-up as tip chatter.
Looking outside of the winter sports and sporting goods market there’s a wealth of cutting-edge industries developing innovative solutions to kill “bad vibes”. Inspired by research pioneered in the audio and aerospace industries, Amplid began developing a system which uses disruptive interference to damp vibrations. Project AntiphaseTM was born.
AntiphaseTM works by introducing isolated materials with a different oscillation phase to fiberglass, into the lay-up. AntiphaseTM vibrates with a different frequency and amplitude to fiberglass. Almost instantaneously the oscillations of the vibrating AntiphaseTM are out of sync with the main resonance body (the ski or snowboard) and start disrupting and damping chatter.
T H E S O LU T I O N
T H E B E N E F IT S
THE PROBLEM
A series of small plates, carefully manufactured at Amplid’s factory from pre-cured, unidirectional carbon fiber are carefully orientated and adhered to a Non-Newtonian polymer sandwich. The complete system is placed in milled channels on the base side of the core, in a location where they can most effectively disrupt chatter.
AntiphaseTM provides superior chatter damping without adding noticeable weight, and it doesn’t confer a soggy, dead feel like elastomer damping. Crucially, AntiphaseTM allows Amplid to utilize nose and tip shapes designed for riding powder on skis and boards that rip hard pack. AntiphaseTM makes centrifugal riding possible in all conditions and terrain.
Uncontrolled nose chatter is destabilizing and unnerving. For the past twenty years, manufacturers of piste specific gear have side-stepped the problem by minimising tip length, using excessive camber depths and with liberal use of energy absorbing rubbers. Stiff, boring to ride and totally useless in powder, we wanted to find an alternate fix for chatter without the usual side effects.
ANTIPHASE TM FEATURES ONLY IN AMPLID’S CENTRIFUGAL SKI AND SNOWBOARD COLLECTIONS.

CAMBER & ROCKER The A.R.C´s own ideologies
Confusion free camber line choices: Each camber line is unique in feel and performance. Finding the right camber line for you is about understanding where, when and how you want to ride. Use the force or our guide, young padawan. Geometry and camber line are the two most impactful characteristics on how a shred will ride so that‘s how we break it down for you. Surfing spines on directional Camrock or nailing switch hardways on twin Hybrid-V, what‘s your style?
CAMROCK
POPCAMBER
Burly man-camber, designed for maximum edge hold and explosive pop. Pop Camber is best suited to highend shreds where performance is paramount. It’s hard work to ride well, but being slingshot out of carves and launched high above the coping is all the reward you’ll ever need.
Amplid’s Camrock profile blends underfoot camber with rocker tips. A length of camber under the boot provides grip and reverse camber in the tips increases playfulness and deep snow performance. This ski-specific camber manifests itself in various forms in Amplid’s skis; skis intended for deep snow have a smaller camber area and increased rocker to improve floatation and fluidity.

Rocket science weight-shedding technology
The essentials, nothing more
Antiphase™ is a brand-new technology, developed in-house, which reduces vibrations improving stability. Unlike conventional dampening, which relies on rubber elastomers to reduce vibrations, Antiphase™ is a multidirectional composite layer bonded to a non-Newtonian material, which is placed between the board’s or ski’s tip and binding. It disrupts the natural frequency of the snowboard, stopping vibrations, which otherwise amplify and end-up as tip chatter, from propagating through the construction.
Any brand that promises to deliver the lightest, most durable shreds on the market needs an ace up its sleeve. HEXO2 is Amplid’s ace, but strictly speaking it’s more like having a Royal flush in-hand than a plain old ace. Honeycomb inserts are placed in carefully selected areas is the tips and between the bindings of our snowboards, minimising swing weight, without negatively effecting durability.
Occasionally it’s necessary to shave weight off any way possible: Topless Tanga Technology is a partial topsheet which is applied to the upper carbon laminate with a top secret adhesion process. The tough material prevents unwanted chipping around the tips caused by touring. Carbon’s aesthetic is raw and imperfect, but since a topsheet adds an extra 250grams, we’d rather go without.

Engineered feel and performance enhancement
Less friction, more floation, smoother turning
Appearances can be deceiving
Amplid’s skis and snowboards feature various Carbon, Basalt and Titinal configurations to dial-in the feel and performance. Whether it’s the damp, fatigue busting effect of Basalt or the snappy pop of Carbon Stringers, we apply these materials in exactly the right quantities, in targeted locations, to deliver the ultimate riding experience.
Featured in Amplid’s new Surfari and Millisurf Split, we have curled up the edge along the nose, from the zero contact point towards the tip. Thanks to this new 3D-shaped nose geometry in combination with our elliptic nose cavity you will experience a new dimension of floatation and turn initiation. The nose feels “surfier” and more forgiving, it pops up the tip and your stance will be more central without any back thigh burner.
JHG is the concept behind Amplid’s latest generation of ski and snowboard shapes. Experimenting with dimensions like surface area and effective edge has resulted in shreds which deliver performance beyond expectation. Powder boards with big board floatation and the manoeuvrability of a jib board; all-mountain skis which finally deliver on that promise; these shapes have to be ridden to be believed!

TECH STUFF Technology is our thing
INTERVIEW WITH
PETER BAUER WHAT IS “SHAPING” TO PETER BAUER? IS IT A SCIENTIFIC PROCESS BASED ON CALCULATIONS? OR IS IT SOMETHING YOU’VE JUST ACQUIRED AN “EYE FOR”?
One thing I’d like to make clear upfront: “Shaping” is a handcraft process, something a surfboard shaper is doing with his plane. I love it… if I lived by the ocean, it’s probably what I would be doing for a living. So, let’s leave the honourable term of “shaping” to surfboard builders! For snowboards or skis, the process is completely different. It’s way dryer, it’s about CAD, moulds and press adjustments. It is a mix of scientific elements – from maths which you need for sidecuts and flex curves, to physics, when it’s about simple durability tasks or vibration absorption. And it has to-do with experience and feeling too: What happens if I change the sidecut and choose a bigger radius? How does the board or ski behave when I stiffen up the tail? During the on-snow phase of development, you need to understand why there is suddenly more pop at the exit of a turn, or why the edge grip on hard pack is weaker. All these factors make this job quite complex, but you build an understanding over the years.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES A GOOD SKI/SNOWBOARD?
A good board or ski needs something very trivial, often underestimated by the industry: The sidecut needs to be compatible and coherent with the flex curve, otherwise there is no harmony when turning. Personally, I believe that’s the most important factor, but there are other important attributes; for instance, the balance of layups used with the wood. Every weaving has different characteristics – carbon fiber is very poppy, almost too explosive, whereas a fiberglass laminate is a lot slower to recoil. Birch wood is tense with a very progressive flex curve, while paulownia is almost dead. Knowing how these combinations work together is essential. In the end, it’s very easy to pimp-up products with sintered bases and other stock materials, but selecting the basic ingredients and applying them in the right way… that’s what creates a good product. WHY DOES AMPLID PUT SUCH AN IMPORTANCE ON INNOVATION?
It’s both my own selfish search for a better riding day, and the natural pressure of
the market. Imagine you can have a better shred experience with a single innovation. Who would say “no”? Now, as a logical consequence, more and more riders want our product. An addictive vicious circle. Actually, a vicious spiral… upwards! AMPLID MANUFACTURES AT A THIRD-PARTY FACTORY. IS THIS A DISADVANTAGE IN THE INNOVATION WAR?
So long as you choose the right manufacturer, it’s the best thing that can happen to a small brand like Amplid. We benefit from economical scaling – buying raw materials in cumulated quantities is a lot cheaper. Actually, most of our chosen materials wouldn’t be available to us in such small quantities as a batch manufacturer. Suddenly, I have access to special, tailor-made ingredients which I could never get my hands on before. And factories producing more units can afford state of the art machinery, because it’s easier for a large producer to repay such huge investments. Working on innovations, there’s limited risk that
another brand will rip-off our ideas, but there’s a moral code in our industry and I’ve chosen to work with partners which I know will abide by it. And it’s not like innovation is totally dependent on our manufacturer; AntiphaseTM for example was developed with external consultation from a specialist engineering lab. Only the final assembly was developed by the factory.
We have been in our new factory for 16 months and obviously, adjusting to using new processes and machinery has caused some hiccups, but right now all the processes seem to be running smoothly. WEIGHT AND DURABILITY ARE CONTRADICTORY. JUGGLING THESE TWO PROPERTIES IS SOMETHING YOU SEEM TOTALLY OBSESSED WITH. HOW FAR CAN YOU PUSH IT?
ON EVERY AMPLID SKI/SNOWBOARD THERE’S A LITTLE GRAPHICAL DETAIL WHICH SAYS “PROUDLY MANUFACTURED IN THE ALPS”. WHAT ABOUT PRODUCING AT THE MOTHERSHIP, IN AUSTRIA, MAKES YOU PROUD?
You can very easily make a ski or a snowboard insanely light, but it will break. And you can make it invincible, but riding with 10 kg under your feet sucks. Light AND durable is a huge challenge.
Yes, I’m proud to manufacture in Austria, for sure. In times where more and more European facilities are closing their doors, it’s quite an adventure to build a factory from scratch. Price competition is tough and other brands feel pressured to move production to low-cost countries to stay competitive, but when your vision is to build the best skis and snowboards, the only option is to work with the best factory. And make no mistake, the Mothership is the most sustainable and technically advanced factory in existence.
With the Facelift ski and the Milligram splitboard, I believe that we have set a new benchmark within the industry. Both models ride superbly and the feedback has been incredible. But the quest never ends and we’re currently working on a new construction, to shave-off even more weight. I have no idea when it will touch ground on Planet Earth… perhaps next year… maybe it will take two years. Right now, we have a half kilogram head-start on our peers. By the time they catch-up we’ll be ready to unleash it.
FIVE YEARS AGO, ROCKER WAS THE BUZZWORD, BUT NOW EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT CAMBER AGAIN. DO YOU SEE SUCH EXTREME TRENDS IN THE FUTURE?
It was very clear to me that camber would make a big comeback. Rocker is helpful for floatation in powder, and it’s forgiving, but nothing has more pop than a spring-loaded tail. Currently, there isn’t a particular shape detail as prevalent as rocker was five years ago. Nose shapes will need to return to normality again. Some look so weird to me… actually they’re just wrong. They look different, and variety is good, but as soon as aesthetics destroy function, it must have a half-life. I hope consumers recognize what’s a fad, and what’s a real innovation!
