THE CONFIDENCE TO TRY SOMETHING NEW.

W

ill or won’t it be a good winter? I’ve been asking this question every October for more than thirty years. I’ve come to realise that although bottomless days take some beating, when there’s a well-thought-through board beneath my feet I’m probably going to have a blast. Good equipment makes the best days epic and the worst days bearable. My intention with Amplid is to keep moving snowboard design forward, pulling other hardware brands along in the slipstream and increasing the number of happy faces in the mountains. Over the last couple of years, Amplid’s R&D team has been working full-throttle. Products like the Milligram and technologies such as Hexo2 and Antiphase have earned Amplid a pioneering reputation. But innovation doesn’t necessarily need to be complicated: With the Future Shapes family, I wanted to strip back the distractions and develop two extraordinary powder boards, differentiating them with shape and flex. For me at least, powder days just became even more special. Amplid is riding on a wave and I’ve never felt as confident to try new ideas as I do now. So long as lines ahead are fresh and challenging, I’m happy for others to follow in our tracks.

FUT URE SHA PES

INTERVIEW WITH PETER BAUER

Future Shapes Snowboards

The Dada is a bit like the Pillow Talk then? Yes, and no! I learned a lot from the Pillow Talk. It was really a proving ground for ideas, ideas like a twin shape board with moderate taper, and generating extra surface area through width, instead of length. After a few years in the range it was time to create something new and better, and that’s where we are with Dada. Team riders who were loyal fans of the Pillow Talk, cannot believe how much more fun the Dada is to ride. What is “Future Shapes”? Future Shapes is a home for the weird geometry ideas whirling around inside my brain. So, it’s like the Centrifugal Collection? I couldn’t be happier with how the Centrifugal Collection turned out last winter, but the whole process of developing these boards’ unique construction was incredibly complex. With the Future Shapes project, I wanted to strip back the finickity technologies and focus purely on shape. I asked myself, “what does a board need to look like to work in powder?”, the way these boards ride in deep snow, I’m pretty sure I now know the answer. There are two boards in the family and they’re both relatively short? Yeah, there are two boards, the Dada and the Aloha Vibes, and they’re both 154cm long. The Dada has a tapered twin shape that’s perfect for backcountry freestyle and the Aloha Vibes is a stumpy swallow-tail with significant taper and some stance set-back.

Something tells me that there’s a bit more to these boards than outline geometry! Outline was a key design criteria, but I also wanted to ensure that all that surface area can be used to create lift in pow. Stiff tips deflect less and are therefore more effective at keeping you on top of deep snow. Not only do you get more float, but you have a nose which will plough through chop and crud and a tail which will stick big landings and pop ollies instead of washing-out. We’re calling this core profile concept “Thick Cut”. Obviously, thicker tips create extra swing-weight, as a counter measure the boards have honeycomb in the tips. Were the boards inspired by the snow surf scene happening in Japan right now? I love what snowboarders in Japan are doing. Designers like Taro Tamai from Gentemstick are creating snow surfing art, and equally, guys like Serge Dupraz have been

creating some beautiful shapes for surfing the pow in Europe for many years. The shapes are inspired by surfing waves and are about smooth-lines, harmony and beauty. My design process for a new shape is much more rooted in physics and mathematics, really optimising the geometry for performance and eliminating everything that isn’t necessary. For sure, I’m inspired by the snow surf trend, but I’ve really tried to do something unique with Future Shapes. And the unpretentious graphics are about simplicity too? Exactly, get rid of the noise and let the shape do the talking. Can you pick a favorite? I’m gonna choose the Aloha Vibes… when I ride this board there’s no pressure to land tricks switch in powder!

Set-back and really surfy, this dumpy, tug-boatlike powder board is unsinkable in even overhead snowfalls. Radical geometry combines heavy taper with an archetypal swallow-tail to shift 50% extra surface area to the nose, putting buoyancy where it’s needed. Riding the Aloha Vibes in fresh snow gives the feeling of total weightlessness, on hardpack it carves like a knife. Its Thick Cut core profile gives this distinctive snowboard a purposeful feel underfoot and a flex pattern ideally matched to deep snow riding. Carefully placed HEXO2 Lite honeycomb inserts reduce swing-weight by removing unnecessary material from the nose, heightening the Aloha Vibes’ responsiveness to unprecedented levels. We decked it out with Bamboo sidewalls for no other reason than they look cool.

In fact, every detail of the Dada’s geometry and construction has been meticulously designed to create the ultimate freestyle powder board. Replacing the popular Pillow Talk, the newest member of the Future Shapes family combines fresh ideas with decades of design experience. Plenty of width, a pinch of taper, curvy shaping and long, low-rising tips mean you’ll have to try hard to sink it. With its Thick Cut core profile and HEXO2 Lite core, the Dada gets the perfect powder board flex pattern without annoying swing-weight. A Carbon Pop Band and a shallow traditional camber underfoot supply all the pop you’ll need to get airborne and stomp landings.

There’s nothing outlandish about its geometry, and the Creamer’s construction isn’t Amplid’s most sophisticated, but this freeride thoroughbred’s no-nonsense design philosophy is fundamental to its line-crushing abilities. Its long, low-rising nose and slightly tapered geometry give the Creamer an attacking riding position which aggressive snowboarders will love. Edge hold that can be relied on is critical in exposed terrain, Direction Cruise Camber distributes pressure evenly along the entire edge for steadfast grip in all conditions. Reborn and ripping

Scooping prestigious awards and acing magazine tests is second nature to the Paradigma. It’s the exceptional everyday shred for lapping parks, slicing-up corduroy and exploding pockets of powder. A well-thought-out geometry is the secret to the Paradigma’s omnipotence on the mountain; true twin geometry within the running length makes the Paradigma a freestyler’s dream on groomed transitions. Out of the confines of the park, a lofty nose and whittled tail can be credited for the Paradigma’s freeride abilities. The additional “Powder Stance” inserts are a life saver on Snorkel-deep pow days. Under its bonnet, a full-length Poplar core and targeted carbon and basalt reinforcement boost pop and supress vibrations for a smooth a lively ride like your favourite Italian GT.

Extra grip when turning, more stability at speed and explosive pop for launching skywards… the new Stereo just answered your prayers. Symmetrical true twin geometry is perfect for ripping the park, but don’t restrict the Stereo to manicured groomers, its All-Terrain Tips make it capable of scoring perfect pow turns too. More fun than the swinging 60ies

Jam-packed with the same materials, technologies and design finesse as the Paradigma, the LoveLife’s scaled-down dimensions and finetuned flex pattern are aimed squarely at experienced and confident female snowboarders in search of the ultimate all-mountain machine. Dependable directional geometry fuses freeride sincerity with freestyle fun. Its Directional Cruise Camber introduces just enough rocker to classic camber for all-conditions performance. Thrash it around resort runs, fire out of the pipe or powder your nose in bottomless blower… whatever you want to ride, the LoveLife is game.

Forgiving and progressive, the female-specific GoGo makes snowboarding more fun than any acid-induced frivolities at New York’s Peppermint Club. Hybrid-V, an easy-flexing fusion of buttery rocker and snappy camber, makes mastering the basics of snowboarding a piece of cake. All-Terrain Tips broaden the GoGo’s repertoire beyond the park by adding deep snow competence. In fact, the GoGo is so intuitive to ride over the entire mountain that scoring pow turns, carving perfect arcs and showboating with a little freestyle trickery soon become second nature.

A single, energized Carbon Pop Band runs along the LoveLife’s underside like a backbone, adding pop and vivacity. In mixed snow conditions Basalt Suspension Strips in a V-arrangement, from the inserts to the contact points, suppress vibrations.

Whether your dream après is dancing on the tables of the Mooserwirt or spa time at your hotel, you probably don’t want to spend it in a cold garage with a wax iron. Fortunately, the GoGo’s Extruded 4 base will run fast for weeks without fresh wax.

mplid’s visual brand manager Michi Hanauer has many strings to his bow. A graduate in Communication Design, but a true artist at heart, when the opportunity presents itself Michi loves to get tactile with paint and materials. A Commercially important board, the Paradigma is always a tricky graphic to get right. Michi’s typically relaxed approach to the artwork was to play some good music, drink a beer or two and paint and re-paint the canvas, a piece of cardboard lying around his house, until he was happy. 5-year-old graphic artist Johannes Brückner, aka Boggie Gramb, hails from the small German city of Weimar. Drawn to illustration at the impressionable age of 14, Johannes’ first visit to a graffiti supply store while holidaying with his folks on the Baltic Sea, was the spark that ignited a passion for art. Enthused by skateboard artwork through his youth, for the last five years Johannes has worked for many of the brands, and with many of the artists, that he looked up to. Johannes used his signature technique, black and white illustration with brush and ink and ink pens, to create the Surfari’s pipe-puffing fisherman. He also lists linoleic woodcuts and spray

cans as tools of his trade and enjoys combining different techniques and working with new materials. “I just like doing cool projects, working with different people and companies, and having fun.”

The Surfari is the ultimate insurance policy against a dry spell at your dream powder destination. This quintessential pow board also surfs hardpack and corduroy with total confidence and style. So, when you can’t cruise powder, go and surf the next best thing. Emanating from the twisted mind of Amplid’s Peter Bauer, the Surfari’s geometry blends the predictability of a 9m sidecut radius with the nimble handling that derives from heavy taper and a stumpy tail. Its spooned nose takes the bite out of wind and temperature affected snow. Asides from its futuristic shape, Amplid’s engineers really went berserk when designing the Surfari, tricking it out with HEXO2 and Antiphase, two proprietary Amplid technologies, to deliver an ultra-lightweight, but well-damped rocket ship. Fine-tuned and tinkered-with for more than a decade, the UNW8 is Amplid’s all-mountain flagship. Demanding to ride, but intensely rewarding, the UNW8 will take aggressive, expert snowboarders to the next level and beyond. Weightless HEXO2 honeycomb construction gives the UNW8 fighter-jet-like handling. Antiphase, Amplid’s ruthlessly-efficient damping tech, smooths out the ride like you’re flying with Air Force One. For the carve-crazy, its full-length Pop Camber will keep the contact points engaged and the UNW8 gripping, no-matter how slick the groomers get… at least until your thighs explode from the strain. Its geeky, hi-tech construction, energy-loaded camber and long, blade-like effective edge turn the Pentaquark into a corduroy slicing Katana. Amplid’s Antiphase damping technology, placed in front of the inserts, sucks-up bumps and tones-down tip chatter. HEXO2 boosts the Pentaquark’s responsiveness by removing swing weight from the tips; edge-to-edge transitions on the Pentaquark are faster than the atoms firing around CERN.

MARIO KÄPPELI

I

n recent years, 29-year-old professional snowboarder Mario Käppeli, a man that spends more time on his splitboard than most, has been mastering the art of photography and using his skills to capture the spectacular peaks and valleys he sees during his adventures. Camping overnight, sometimes in extreme environments, enables Mario to shoot the mountains when the light is golden, and the landscape is most dramatic. Amplid caught-up with Mario to talk about his passion for mountain photography, his inspirations and the kit he’s packing.

Mario Käppeli Interview

Mario Käppeli the snowboarder is well known in snowboard circles, but Mario Käppeli the photographer is something new. Why did you start shooting photos? Haha. I wouldn’t go as far as saying I’m a photographer now, but I definitely like to take photos. I spend so much time in the mountains and see a lot of beautiful things, so it would be a real shame not to capture these moments.

on these toys! Sleeping in the mountains involves a lot of equipment; splitboard, sleeping bag and mat, tent, cameras, avalanche equipment, drone, first aid kit, extra clothing. All this gear makes my average pack weight for an adventure around 25kg.

more time in South Tyrol, in the Dolomites. It’s amazing there! And at some point, the mountains around the Mt. Blanc too. Thinking out loud, I’d really like to go on an adventure in Patagonia and Chile too. There are too many beautiful places out there.

Wowsa, that’s a lot of gear. So, how important is it to have a lightweight splitboard set-up?

Can you put your finger on what it takes to get the perfect photo?

Its super important to have a lightweight, but powerful splitboard, because my pack with all the camping and camera gear is already back-breaking. That’s why I’m loving the Milligram. This machine takes me everywhere!

Which photographers influence and inspire you? My main influence, without a doubt, is Patrick Steiner! Patrick has taught so much about camera gear and how to take photos. I also need to credit Florian Trattner, Max Meissner and my roommate Robin Brillert who really helped me a lot. Other than these guys, I don’t really need inspiration from others: The mountains provide all the motivation and inspiration I need. That said, I for sure have some favorite photographers, like Christoph Rauch (@official_rauchbua). Check his work out… this dude is just killing it! Looking far into the future, is photography something you want to pursue when your snowboard career ends? I’ve been thinking about it, but I haven’t made a grand plan yet. I want to get more experience and increase my knowledge first, then I’ll see where this path is leading me.

Amplid changed the game with the Milligram, proving that not only can splitboard weight be dramatically reduced, but that it can be reduced while simultaneously delivering charismatic board-feel, all-conditions versatility and durability. Beneath its raw, but sexy carbon exterior is Amplid’s top-secret BBP core, a jigsaw of ultra-light wood varieties which cuts weight and tames carbon’s nervous character. Tanga Tech and Glass Impact Pads are highly targeted, life extending technologies which protect your shred without a weight penalty. This year Amplid collaborated with the Union Binding Company to integrate its Chinese hooks and board clips into Amplid’s splitboards. Union’s weightless, double threaded titanium hardware allows the removal of catchy hardware from the base of the board.

The decision to fuse the Surfari’s floaty fish tail geometry with the Milligram’s weightless construction was easy. Amplid’s highly evolved BBP core and carbon laminates strips so much weight that the Millisurf literally sprints up the skin track like a pedigree greyhound. Then scrawl the perfect bottom turn into a virgin wind lip and make the most of your hard work! Weaving through pine forests at breakneck speeds, the Millisurf is simply breath-taking. Its tapered shape and negligible swing-weight heighten agility and responsiveness to new, mind-expanding levels. Deep, crusty and chopped-up snow get slaughtered by its unique, spooned nose and spat out by its swallow-like tail. New board clips by the Union Binding Co. create a solid connection between the two split halves and allow base-side hardware to be hidden, for snag-free riding and maintenance.

While it might never dethrone the Millisurf and Milligram, the Creamer Split is the underdog splitboard in Amplid’s collection that delivers solid performance, great board feel and astounding value for money. Featuring the same geometry as its high-rolling brother the Milligram, but with a more economical construction, the Creamer thrives in the backcountry, whatever the terrain or snow conditions. In powder its curvaceous, smooth-rising nose and subtle pin-tail provide abundant lift. In trickier conditions, ample effective edge, plenty of camber and vibration taming Basalt Suspension Strips keep the edges biting. New board clips by the Union Binding Co. live up to the “Stronger” promise, offering a secure and dependable connection between the board halves. AMPLID TEST PILOT

T

his winter Amplid opened its R&D process to the public by inviting its most loyal fans to become part of its Test Pilot initiative. Since launching two months ago, almost 200 willing testers have signed-up to Test Pilot, and the numbers are growing daily. Every product that Amplid designs is tested to destruction during the prototyping phase by team riders, ambassadors and members of Amplid’s development team. Before the final specs are confirmed, feed-

back from these sources is used to fine-tune the flex pattern, geometry and construction. By adding Amplid’s most important stakeholders, its customers, to the feedback loop, Peter and the team hope to build even more relevant and exciting gear in the future. Intentionally limited to Amplid’s existing customers and not the broader market, Peter’s adamant that keeping the metaphorical net small and the catch precise is the best way to ensure the feedback is useful.

“We build skis and snowboards with real personality. Building ‘everybody’s darling’ isn’t interesting to me… I think going down that route is the fastest way for a ski or snowboard to lose the essence of what makes it special, its character. Because of that, the selection process is super important: I need to know that the feedback I’m receiving on a new shape, technology or material is from somebody that understands the gear beneath their feet. As an example, if I’m designing a new UNW8, who better to ask for feedback than a three-time UNW8 owner? And similarly, is it possible to make a Facelift lighter? Maybe, but are owners of the current ski going to like it? Isn’t it just good sense to ask their opinion?! That’s why we’re keeping it restricted, because it’s easier for my team to cherry-pick the right testers”. In January the first round of prototypes will ship to testers, accompanied by a carefully prepared feedback form. Each winter Peter plans to select between 10 and 20 Test Pilots to receive test gear, depending on the number of new additions to the collection. When asked why he’s letting the testers keep the test gear, Peter replies: “If our testers are doing the job right, they’ve earned that shred. The information

we’re receiving in return is priceless.” Being involved in product testing isn’t the only benefit of being registered to Test Pilot. Amplid’s marketing manager, Rich Ewbank, explains: “Our aim is to build a community of customers that we can rely on to keep Amplid’s products and marketing relevant. Creating subsidised camps, exclusive events and other opportunities for us to connect with our customers through the winter will keep Amplid heading in the right direction.”

Antiphase

ANTI PHASE

ANTIPHASE TM

THE SOLUTION

AntiphaseTM is a brand-new technology, developed in-house by Amplid, which reduces vibrations, improving board stability. Unlike conventional damping, which relies on rubber elastomers to reduce vibrations, AntiphaseTM is a multidirectional composite layer bonded to a non-Newtonian material, which is placed between the board’s or ski’s tip and binding. It disrupts the natural frequency of a ski/snowboard, stopping vibrations which otherwise amplify and end-up as tip chatter.

A series of small plates, carefully manufactured at Amplid’s factory from pre-cured, unidirectional carbon fiber are carefully orientated and adhered to a Non-Newtonian polymer sandwich. The complete system is placed in milled channels on the base side of the core, in a location where they can most effectively disrupt chatter.

THE SCIENCE

THE PROBLEM Uncontrolled nose chatter is destabilizing and unnerving. For the past twenty years, manufacturers of piste specific gear have side-stepped the problem by minimising tip length, using excessive camber depths and with liberal use of energy absorbing rubbers. Stiff, boring to ride and totally useless in powder, we wanted to find an alternate fix for chatter without the usual side effects.

THE INSPIRATION Looking outside of the winter sports and sporting goods market there’s a wealth of cutting-edge industries developing innovative solutions to kill “bad vibes”. Inspired by research pioneered in the audio and aerospace industries, Amplid began developing a system which uses disruptive interference to damp vibrations. Project AntiphaseTM was born.

WITHOUT ANTIPHASE ANTIPHASE REDUCES TIP FLAP WITH ANTIPHASE

AntiphaseTM works by introducing isolated materials with a different oscillation phase to fiberglass, into the lay-up. AntiphaseTM vibrates with a different frequency and amplitude to fiberglass. Almost instantaneously the oscillations of the vibrating AntiphaseTM are out of sync with the main resonance body (the ski or snowboard) and start disrupting and damping chatter.

THE BENEFITS AntiphaseTM provides superior chatter damping without adding noticeable weight, and it doesn’t confer a soggy, dead feel like elastomer damping. Crucially, AntiphaseTM allows Amplid to utilize nose and tip shapes designed for riding powder on skis and boards that rip hard pack. AntiphaseTM makes centrifugal riding possible in all conditions and terrain.

ANTIPHASE TM FEATURES ONLY IN AMPLID’S CENTRIFUGAL SKI AND SNOWBOARD COLLECTIONS.

onfusion free camber line choices: Each camber line is unique in feel and performance. Finding the right camber line for you is about understanding where, when and how you want to ride. Use the force or our guide, young padawan. Geometry and camber line are the two most impactful characteristics on how a shred will ride so that‘s how we break it down for you. Surfing spines on directional Camrock or nailing switch hardways on twin Hybrid-V, what‘s your style?

POP CAMBER

Burly man-camber, designed for maximum edge hold and explosive pop. Pop Camber is best suited to high-end shreds where performance is paramount. It’s hard work to ride well, but being slingshot out of carves and launched CRUSIE CAMBER high above the coping is all the reward you’ll ever need.

DIRECTIONAL CRUISE CAMBER

CRUSIE CAMBER

A half-fat camber for all-mountain dominance. Cruise Camber’s toned-down dimensions deliver a precise and lively feel much like Pop Camber, but with much improved deep snow performance and a more “broken-in” feel out of the shrink-wrap. In Amplid’s directional snowboards and skis a touch of early rise is added to Cruise Camber to improve buoyancy even further.

CAMROCK CAMROCK

Amplid’s Camrock profile blends underfoot camber with rocker tips. A length of camber under the boot provides grip and reverse camber in the tips increases playfulness and deep snow performance. This ski-specific camber manifests itself in various forms in Amplid’s skis; skis intended for deep snow have a smaller camber area and increased rocker to improve floatation and fluidity.

HYBRID-V

HYBRID-V Hybrid-V has a rocker section between the bindings and camber under the inserts. It’s a loose, easy to pivot and effortless to pop camber-line, that works best with freestyle snowboards. Featured only in Amplid’s Thick Cut Core, HEXO2 LITE places honeycomb in the tips, but not between the bindings. The weight saving from removing excess material reduces swing weight and heightens responsiveness.

Uber light wood varieties are cut, treated and aligned in a way only our factory knows. Its strength to weight ratio has scientist baffled.

Titanal Centribelt 2.0 is a 0.4mm thick, 30mm wide belt of aerospace grade 7075 Aluminium alloy, placed above and below the core. Extra width beneath the mounting area increases torsional stiffness. This new generation of Titanal Centribelt offers the inimitable stability of metal reinforcement without unwieldy swing weight.

Running along the topsheet in a V-configuration from the contact points towards the boots, these narrow bands of Basalt fabric dampen unwanted vibrations, reducing rider fatigue and keeping your edge engaged with the snow for improved control. Get the Rolls Royce feeling!

A narrow band of carbon stringers that run through the centreline of a ski or snowboard from tip-to-tail. POP Band increases longitudinal stiffness and pop without altering torsional stiffness. Shreds with Pop Band feel livelier but remain forgiving.

On the Milligram we have added mulitdirectional glass pads in the binding area, to avoid dings caused by pointy corners of metal splitboard binding bases. These pads will enhance durability without adding undesired weight.

Spanning a snow hole with one split ski at full stride can snap it clean in two. Unidirectional Flax/Carbon stringers along the underside of the core increase bending stiffness, reducing “dishing” in deep snow and increasing breaking resistance. Flax fibres, which originate from a Hemp like plant, are lightweight with good damping properties.
