I’ve read that the human brain is split in two halves. Most brain functions are distributed to some extent between both ‘hemispheres’, but each side has a bias. The source of creativity and imagination is the brain’s right side. It is where new ideas are born and finessed. In the right side of the brain, problems are solved with creative thinking and holistic deliberation. Most importantly, gut-feeling, the product of all these years of experience resides on the right side. The brain’s left side’s bias is logic and analytic thinking. In the left side, scientific concepts are understood and number-crunching mathematics are processed. Complex ideas like Antiphase and core profiles depend on the left side of the brain. In recent years, I’ve been working the left side of my brain harder and harder to accelerate innovation. Finding the equilibrium between the brain’s two halves, bouncing between the influence of complex engineering and an instinctive understanding, that is where I believe the best designs are created. For the last 15 years of Amplid I’ve been attempting to find the sweet spot. Each season I’m getting closer to the perfect mix, Amplid’s 19/20 collection is the closest yet.

Like every Bavarian, Peter Bauer learned to ski almost before he could walk. His youth was a blur of adolescence and ski racing. It wasn’t until 1984 that Peter discovered snowboarding. A chance sighting of Canadian snowboard pioneer Ken Achenbach in Sudelfeld, a small resort not far from Peter’s home, introduced him to sliding with two edges, not four. Hooked from his second day riding, Peter progressed quickly and was soon competing. At the 1986 Austria Cup, on the slopes of the Kitzsteinhorn, a chance meeting with Jake Burton Carpenter changed the course of Peter’s life.
BAUER THE MAN BEHIND THE BRAND
BACK
“Jake approached me and asked me where I’d got the Burton Cruiser I was riding from and whether I’d like to try a Safari prototype. Before I knew it, I was wearing a Burton race suit and I had a ticket to the US Open.” During his career as a professional snowboarder Peter was German Champion 11 times, European Champion five times, World Champion four times and vice World Champion in the combined event (halfpipe, moguls, slalom and downhill) behind a certain Craig Kelly. Racing also allowed Peter to freeride all over the world: From first descents in Valdez and Atlin to impossible lines off the back of Chamonix, Peter was one of freeriding’s true pioneers.

THE
BRAND
No riding career is complete without video parts, but few riders have been involved with such classics flics as the Blizzard of Ahhhs, Scream of Consciousness and Pachamama. 16 years at Burton also gave Peter the opportunity to learn his craft. Peter was heavily involved with developing and testing some of the most revolutionary snowboards of the late 80s and 90s and learned a lot from working with the best in the industry: “I learned a lot from Jake. He has a holistic approach to things; taking a step back and seeing things from a distance for a while and then getting closer again and making adjustments with a tiny screwdriver (metaphoric) to get the whole right.” In 2002, Peter left Burton to pursue his own interests. Success with his own design consultancy and with Powderhausen, Europe’s first online snow community, had given Peter a taste for entrepreneurship and he felt it was time to make a break. In 2005, he joined forces with local friend Anian Thrainer and founded Amplid, a ski and snowboard brand for the anti-apartheid era. To this day, Amplid remains the only brand to serve both skiers and snowboarders from day one. Amplid has enabled Peter to experiment with shred designs, flex patterns and graphical concepts to his heart’s content. It’s that connection to the product and the creative process that still motivates him now.
our feet on shreds the market couldn’t or wouldn’t provide. Anian and I wanted to ride our own boards and skis. Unfortunately, the market is flooded with what sells easily, not what makes a rider’s day better. We started Amplid to be an exception. The challenge of building the best skis and snowboards is still my main motivation.” Although Amplid keeps Peter more than busy, almost 35 years after taking his first turns, Peter is still pulling ‘sickies’ on powder days and he religiously rides nearly every snow-covered morning at the resorts that lie at his doorstep. When asked what keeps him riding, Peter’s answer is typical of somebody who has caught the bug. “Actually I don‘t know,” he said. “I’m still hooked like I was on day one. Nope, actually like day two, the day that you start to know that you love riding”.
“ACTUALLY I DONT KNOW I’M STILL HOOKED LIKE I WAS ON DAY ONE. NOPE, ACTUALLY LIKE DAY TWO, THE DAY THAT YOU START TO KNOW THAT YOU LOVE RIDING”.

OF BOARDS DESIGN 2005 | EQUITY
2008 | FENOM
Ancestor to the Creamer, the Equity was one of the first boards that I developed for Amplid. In my final years at Burton I worked a lot with the Supermodel and so the Equity was inevitably influenced by it. A lot of my riding was in big-mountain terrain at this time; AK, Argentina, Courmayeur‌ its long, tapered shape and elliptical nose cavity made it perfect for these environments.
The Fenom was my first attempt at a backcountry twin snowboard. The shape, by today’s standards, was conventional, but the idea was ahead of its time. It was rockered from tip-to-tail, which made it easy to ride in powder. We recommended sizing-up by 4cm for the perfect length which in hindsight was probably the opposite of what customers wanted! The board was only in the collection for a couple of years, but the idea behind it resurfaced later with the Pillow Talk and then the Dada. It was super heavy because we used heavier glass and thicker steel edges for increased durability. Everybody was jibbing and bonking trees.
I travelled to Argentina to ride the first prototypes. The production of the boards was delayed so the boards had to follow via courier. They were stuck in customs and held to ransom until I could stump-up the bribe. I had to extend my stay and ended-up meeting my wife during that time!

2008 | PARADIGMA UNW8
2013 | THE MORNING GLORY
At Burton, I always loved the differentiation of the Custom X from the standard Custom through construction. The shape of the boards was identical, but the way they rode was very different. Developing the Paradigma UNW8, which was pressed in the standard Paradigma’s mould, I did exactly that. Carbon, honeycomb, lighter wood varieties… no expense was spared. I wanted the most advanced snowboard construction on the market and I got it. Without knowing it, I’d altered Amplid’s course; placing innovation and materials development at the heart of the brand. Today, every Amplid shred can trace its lineage back to the Paradigma UNW8, in the Centrifugal Collection its undeniable.
The MG was the first time we’d experimented with such a full, low rising nose shape and rear-foot camber. The first prototype was flat. It sat-back in powder and felt lifeless. In the second round we incorporated some camber beneath the back foot. We were better understanding how rocker, camber and outline shape can work together to create totally unique sensations in powder. It reminded me of the importance of camber to feel as well as performance.

OF SKIS DESIGN
2005 | THE INFRABLACK
We released the first version of the Infrablack in 2005. It was 108mm underfoot, which was w-i-d-e at that time. People would stare at you in the lift line and ask if you were planning to go waterskiing. It was 100% carbon, superlight and very snappy. The Infrablack was definitely a forerunner in its category. We sold a lot of these beasts and people still ask where they can get hold of a pair.
BACK
2008 | THE CHOLES TERONE R.C
R.C. stood for “reversed camber”, because at that time the terminology “rocker” didn’t even exist in skiing or snowboarding. That ski was 126mm underfoot, a pure flotation animal. The design was a collaboration between Anian, Cato Laegreid and Mathieu Imbert. In winters with powder it was a top seller, in winters without, it was sitting in the warehouse like an old pretzel in a bakery. After the Colesterone R.C. came the 130mm Lexington, but after that the width “arms race” cooled.

2009 | THE ROCKWELL
Simply the most versatile ski we have ever made. A real swiss army knife. It was the first ski where we experimented with integrating a tight, carvy radius in a ski with a lot of floatation area. The Rockwell was probably the first ski out there to do this with less than 100mm underfoot. It’s still an essential part of the collection and for sure has the biggest fanbase. The Rockwell’s influence is blaringly-obvious in the Player Series.

2016 | THE FACELIFT
The “Earn More Turns” vehicle from the future. With its superlight construction and space-age shaping, it’s a supreme climber. There are hundreds of lightweight tourers on the market, so, with the Facelift I didn’t want to target the uphill-racing-suit-guy: It’s for the freeskier that wants to be on the peak before his buddies to simply get first tracks. It skis undeniably like an Amplid ski… imparting that soul/personality into such a lightweight and complicated product is what defines the Facelift as an important ski in Amplid’s history.

10 YEARS OF THE
ROCK WELL
SNOWBOARDS
BINDINGS
SKIS
BAGS
10 years ago, skis were a little different. Rocker was still kinda conceptual. The powder ski “battle of widths” was getting out of control. Everybody was on twin-tip skis... your mum probably skied a pair! It was a time of change and innovation. Brands were experimenting and taking risks, sometimes with success. Against this backdrop, Amplid’s founders, Peter and Anian, got to work designing a ski that took the 5-dim (early taper) shaping concept, a geometry philosophy beginning to appear in a handful of the most progressive powder ski designs, and applied it to an all-mountain waist width. The ski they designed looked unlike anything on the market. It had a ridiculously tight sidecut, the kind you’d find on a slalom ski. The running length was less than 60% of the ski length. Its long-tapered tips brushed the snow surface scooping upwards at the last moment. As appearances go, it looked unconventional, but on snow it totally blew-away their expectations. Lofty and easy to handle in powder, fun to rip corduroy turns on, buttery in the park and solid off jumps. Finally, freeskiing had a quiver killer. 10 years later and the shape remains the same as the original. Barring a few minor tweaks and upgrades, the Rockwell of 2020 is the Rockwell of 2010. It has become the muse which has inspired more recent designs like the Multiplayer and after 10 years it still looks and skis like nothing else. So, what’s next for the ski?
“EVERY YEAR I FEEL A LITTLE PRESSURE TO UPDATE THE ROCKWELL. THE TRUTH IS, WE GOT LUCKY WITH THE ORIGINAL DESIGN AND CHANGING IT MIGHT MESS WITH THE MAGIC FORMULA. UNTIL I CAN IMPROVE ON PERFECTION, I’LL KEEP THE ROCKWELL EXACTLY AS IT IS!“ BACK

THE “TWO-SEASON” CYCLE For the last 15 years Amplid has been slave to the relentless winter sports sales cycle. Today, we find the annual cycle too restrictive. It’s time to try something different. Starting now, Amplid is introducing two season products to its ski and snowboard collections. We believe this brave step will accelerate product innovation, free-up resources and sharpen our focus, and create opportunities for our committed retail partners too. Most importantly, breaking the cycle is a step towards a more sustainable business: Carefully ensuring that there’s enough Amplid gear to meet the demand, but not fuelling pointless consumerism with irresponsible overproduction.

THE PERFECT SNOWBOARD The Amplid Research Cartel has spent the past two years getting stuck-into rider data and developing statistical models on a quest for the perfect snowboard width. Wide enough to eliminate toe drag, but not so broad that edge-to-edge transitions become sluggish… it’s a tricky tightrope to navigate. A ton of research and number-crunching later and we’ve calculated, based on rider height, weight and boot size, what we believe are the optimum widths for each board length. Allowing us to boot out the “wides” and streamline Amplid’s collection to cover the broadest range of riders with the fewest possible sizes. The first step was to focus the mid-length of each model on the average boot size (43EU) and increase or reduce the width accordingly for longer or shorter sizes. While other, more recognized, brands may be happy offering 10 different sizes per model to cater for 95% of snowboarders, we’re happy to cover 80% of snowboarders with just three.

TM
FROM THE SCIENTIFIC ANTIPHASE TM
AntiphaseTM is a brand-new technology, developed inhouse by Amplid, which reduces vibrations, improving board stability. Unlike conventional damping, which relies on rubber elastomers to reduce vibrations, AntiphaseTM is a multidirectional composite layer bonded to a non-Newtonian material, which is placed between the board’s or ski’s tip and binding. It disrupts the natural frequency of a ski/snowboard, stopping vibrations which otherwise amplify and end-up as tip chatter. THE PROBLEM
Uncontrolled nose chatter is destabilizing and unnerving. For the past twenty years, manufacturers of piste specific gear have side-stepped the problem by minimising tip length, using excessive camber depths and with liberal use of energy absorbing rubbers. Stiff, boring to ride and totally useless in powder, we wanted to find an alternate fix for chatter without the usual side effects. THE INSPIRATION
Looking outside of the winter sports and sporting goods market there’s a wealth of cutting-edge industries developing innovative solutions to kill “bad vibes”. Inspired by research pioneered in the audio and aerospace industries, Amplid began developing a system which uses disruptive interference to damp vibrations. Project AntiphaseTM was born. BACK
UNDERGROUND
THE SOLUTION
A series of small plates, carefully manufactured at Amplid’s factory from pre-cured, unidirectional carbon fiber are carefully orientated and adhered to a Non-Newtonian polymer sandwich. The complete system is placed in milled channels on the base side of the core, in a location where they can most effectively disrupt chatter. THE SCIENCE
AntiphaseTM works by introducing isolated materials with a different oscillation phase to fiberglass, into the lay-up. AntiphaseTM vibrates with a different frequency and amplitude to fiberglass. Almost instantaneously the oscilations of the vibrating AntiphaseTM are out of syncwith the main resonance body (the ski or snowboard) and start disrupting and damping chatter. THE BENEFITS
WITHOUT ANTIPHASE
ANTIPHASE REDUCES TIP FLAP
WITH ANTIPHASE
AntiphaseTM provides superior chatter damping without adding noticeable weight, and it doesn’t confer a soggy, dead feel like elastomer damping. Crucially, AntiphaseTM allows Amplid to utilize nose and tip shapes designed for riding powder on skis and boards that rip hard pack. AntiphaseTM makes centrifugal riding possible in all conditions and terrain.

Full-depth channels are strategically CNC-ed into the core and filled with a low-shore-hardness Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU). The TPU material has a viscoelastic behaviour, meaning it deforms under force and then returns to its original shape, but absorbs energy in the process. Vibrations caused by tip oscillation create shear forces in the core. Viscodamp’s TPU inserts, which are bonded to the top and bottom laminates, absorb energy during initial shear deformation AND during the elastic return to their original shape, sucking-up vibrational energy and delaying successive vibration oscillations. The damping effect is clear, the weight penalty minimal. Viscodamp makes riding in every snow-condition smoother, more precise and less fatiguing.

POPCAMBER
CAMBER & ROCKER
POP CAMBER
Burly man-camber, designed for maximum edge hold and explosive pop. Pop Camber is best suited to high-end shreds where performance is paramount. It’s hard work to ride well, but being slingshot out of carves and launched high above the coping is all the reward you’ll ever need. DIRECTIONAL CRUISE CAMBER
A half-fat camber for all-mountain dominance. Cruise Camber’s toned-down dimensions deliver a precise and lively feel much like Pop Camber, but with much improved deep snow performance and a more “broken-in” feel out of the shrink-wrap. In Amplid’s directional snowboards and skis a touch of early rise is added to Cruise Camber to improve buoyancy even further. CAMROCK
Amplid’s Camrock profile blends underfoot camber with rocker tips. A length of camber under the boot provides grip and reverse camber in the tips increases playfulness and deep snow performance. This ski-specific camber manifests itself in various forms in Amplid’s skis; skis intended for deep snow have a smaller camber area and increased rocker to improve floatation and fluidity.

Take more speed, pop higher, brake later, endure more G-force than your legs can handle… experience everything your head tells you to avoid, but your heart yearns for. TECHNICAL KEY FEATURES

The smooth feel of Viscodamp is just another feather in the cap of this esteemed veteran. More adaptable than MacGyver with a Leatherman, it might not diffuse explosives with pack of Wrigley’s, but the Paradigma handles everything the mountain can throw at it, no sweat. This radical hybrid combines the cranky turning-radius of a slalom ski with float-inducing surface-area of a powder ski. The result is personality-packed performance in a broad range of conditions. Except for syrup and pancakes, few combinations go as well together as the Multiplayer’s geometry and Amplid’s premium carbon touring construction. The obvious benefit of this five-star-alliance are its uphill credentials, at 3.1Kg a pair (@184cm) the Facelift 108 gains altitude like a rocket. Its tip-tail-tail wood core and sandwich construction ensure the ski still rips. By adopting the Multiplayer’s playful take on freeride geometry, the Facelift 108 possesses the kind of rebellious flow and feel that terrifies touring traditionalists. TECHNICAL KEY FEATURES
