A unique area... PROXIMITY The Amsterdam-IJmuiden port region is the ideal location for offshore wind logistics: construction, operation and maintenance. Conveniently located at close range of consented and projected offshore wind projects on the North Sea. S PA C E The region offers assembly and storage sites directly on the coast and along the North Sea Canal. From the pilot station to the Amsterdam terminals, takes 2.5 to 3 hours, including the lock passage. The inland area has no tidal restrictions. CONNECTIVITY & ACCESSIBILITY Excellent multimodal hinterland connections. Well connected by inland shipping, road rail and air connections. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is only a 15-minute drive away.
EXPERIENCE Two offshore wind farms have already been installed from the Amsterdam-IJmuiden region. OWEZ Egmond and Prinses Amalia out of IJmuiden. Together, the port authorities and maritime businesses in the region have a wealth of experience and knowledge in port business and logistics. A UNIQUE NETWORK The area offers a wide network of companies, local authorities and expertise dedicated to offshore wind and focused on offering clever solutions to serve customers. On top of that, we are well connected to knowledge and research centres in the area of offshore wind energy. We offer a network with a high level of flexibility and freedom of choice for the customer.
The Amsterdam-IJmuiden region is well-situated for the construction and the operation & maintenance for wind farms off the Dutch and UK coast. In the port areas wind turbine blades and other wind turbine components can be stored ready for shipping out to build offshore wind farms in the North Sea.

...with a clever concept
(C) Grote Hout – Velsen • Space: 60.000m2 • Quay: 400 m, suitable for heavy loads • Draft: 9m, tideless • Cranes, warehouses and other services: 100 tons mobile Gottwald crane and every other mobile crane type available. Warehouse: 1500m2. Stevedoring services available
(E) Hoogtij - Zaanstad • Space: 97 ha, to be developed further, directly located on the North Sea Canal • Quay length: 950m under construction • Water Depth: 9m
Besides fishing vessels, cruise ships and cargo vessels the port basins of IJmuiden, Velsen, Beverwijk, Zaanstad and Amsterdam are also the home base for installation and supply ships, crew vessels, cable layers and other specialised craft, which service the construction and operation & maintenance of the offshore wind farms in the North Sea.
THE CHALLENGE Logistics is, with a share of 20% of the total installation costs, a competitive factor in wind farm construction. Logistic expenses have a significant impact on the profitability of a wind farm. Project developers, contractors and suppliers determine the logistic concept used for construction and installation. But the logistic capabilities and flexibility of the ports and their local businesses can make the difference. In most European ports on the North Sea, space is scarce. It is a particular challenge for the maritime supply chain to minimize the effects of disturbances influenced by weather, locks and tidal entrance of a port. If available space in the port becomes scarce, alternative measures have to be examined.

O U R S O L U T I O N : T H E T R AY C O N C E P T IJmuiden and Amsterdam have developed a logistical concept that makes your components accessible twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, the whole year round. This meets the needs of existing and prospective operators to ensure a continuous workflow for the installation of wind farms.
High quality assembly and storage space is available at locations along the North Sea Canal and in the port of Amsterdam. These additional areas are also available for storage during bad weather periods. A constant flow of turbine components and equipment can be organized from these locations to feed and fill “the tray” at our open sea locations. This concept is the “one-stop solution“ for realizing your wind farm.
At the quays of port basins connected to the open sea in the port of IJmuiden, wind turbine components, foundations and cables can be stored with a round-the-clock accessibility to ensure the highest operating efficiency. A “serving tray” so to speak of turbine components needed for at least a week’s worth of installation time is constantly available on the quay side at our open sea locations.
With our deep-sea basins and terminals, logistic service providers and excellent hinterland connections we offer tailor-made solutions for the offshore wind energy industry. We can optimise your supply chain and we can develop made-to-measure logistics strategies together with our customers. All the turbine components you need on a silver platter by the sea, constantly fed from storage and assembly areas further inland.

A UNIQUE AREA The Amsterdam-IJmuiden port area is perfectly located for serving offshore wind projects. The region is linked to the primary West European shipping routes, and their excellent road, rail and inland waterway connections with a vast hinterland. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is only a 15-minute drive away, enabling fast air transport of cargo, emergency supplies, executives and personnel. Located in the heart of The Netherlands, the strength of the wider Amsterdam metropolitan area and its fully developed network economy is at the disposal of the maritime and offshore industries: logistics, financial and legal services, supported by IT and creative industries. This enhances the rapid development of new niches, like offshore wind energy. In short, the Amsterdam – IJmuiden port region has everything that´s necessary to serve the maritime sector swiftly, competently, effectively and efficiently. A UNIQUE NETWORK Over the years, Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port (AYOP) has developed into a unique network organization. Our partner list not only includes many oil-and-gas, offshore wind and port-related and maritime industries, but local government bodies as well.
This means that communication lines between the local business community and government bodies are very short, allowing for a quick and unified response to new developments. AYOP’s major objective is to provide promotional support to the regional offshore industries and to promote the area’s unique facilities.
